GIOMAN  I have been fairly happy with FS for a long time. Today I went to their site and noticed that the current edition is 3.6.3 and I had DL 3.6.4 from here. I also noticed that one of the features mentioned in 3.6.3 is not in the program. Someone here mentioned they had written the developer and never got a reply so I don't have much hope of getting my questions answered it seems. Too bad, still a pretty decent program.

BACKPACKER  v3.6.4 doesn't show up in the developer's site anymore, and they've not notified anyone, even when I emailed Softobe to ask why.

BACKPACKER  About the full-featured FS Preview window:

Can that window be entitled with the task-in-process (ie Exact Synch, Incremental Synch, Exact BackUp etc.) to dispel any doubts about what is being previewed ?

Might it even be possible to change tasks from within the Preview window, just by changing the window-title ?

Thanks for the ongoing work on FolderSynchronizer.

FREEDMAN  I have been using this software from its early Mac OS 9 days and have never had a problem with it. I use it to sync my desktop to my laptop. I suspect that many of the probems reported by other users having less success with thios program is related to other causes, such as not properly maintaining the system software. I would like to see a more elegant user interface for the settings, but otherwise thsi is a first rate product.

HOPETINDALL  I purchased FS in summer 2005.

Unfortunately - I haven't been able to run it since - as it damages the permissions on my SOURCE disk every time I run it.

There seems to be some problem with the software's handling of symlinks.

In the interim - I've been using the much less functional 'Deja Vu' - as this doesn't do damage to my disk like Folders Synchronizer.

The author was initially responsive to my emails - despite an early offer of refund (which i turned down hoping the problem would be fixed) - he now doesn't seem to want to give me a refund and hasn't seemed to have addressed the problem either.

I really hope he fixes this software so I can use it again. When it works - it's great. But I don't want something messing up my disk.

SWATSON  HI, you were using v3.6b - a beta version. They have now released a finished version (not beta). Do you still have the same problems...?

HOPETINDALL  Update:

Software vendor supplied a refund.

I asked him if the new version has fixed the permissions/soft link problem. Unfortunately it hasn't.

He advises on July 17, 2006 that the new version 3.6.0 is just a universal version of 3.5.4.

HAROLD ROETH,  I just noticed that there has not been any recent comment on this fine program. I use it with OS 10.4.5 to regularly back-up certain important files. I also use the timer option with FS running in the background to backup important publications I am working on every 5 minutes, LotÕs of uses for this program as their web site indicates. Never any problems. (v3.5)

WELSHBALONEY  This looked quite promising. It worked nicely for me a few times, but then it crashed and would no longer launch without crashing each time. I desintalled, reinstalled, reset my preferences and it crashed again. Not sure why, but I think it was something to do with auto-mounting the remote volume.

Shame. I'll wait for the next update.

ANONYMOUS  I have found that this program damages my file permissions during synchronization. I find that this program is dangerous for large filesets.

TECH  I just got done buying a site license for this. I have to day I evaluated this software for 30 days or so (I initially bought 1 full license). I tried to find a comparable free software, needless to say I couldn't find one with all the features this has.

I emailed them saying I need to be able to run a few in OS 9. Within a half hour they told me they would give me serial numbers for OS 9 also if I would just email them. So I bought the software, and they saw my order and just sent the OS 9 serials along with the OS X serials. GREAT customer support.

ANONYMOUS  This program works consistently well. I have played around with others and found them either flawed or too cmplicated to mess with. I use it both to back up my documents folder and to sync my desktop with my laptop.

PROWESSSOL  After evaluating several products, I settled on FoldersSynchronizer because of the quality of the copies and the ease of use for multiple source-destination pairs. When I recently had a problem, my queries to the developer were answered within a couple of hours and a solution was available the next day!

I certainly got more than I paid for. Kudos to Softobe for treating their customers like kings.

BUD  This is a poor excuse of an OS X program. The main user window reminds me of my 3 year old daughters attempt at coloring on the wall. Hire Icon Factory to design you a reasonable program if you want people to use this dookey. Not worth the download.

SUSAN WILLIAMS  Recently, I made the mistake of purchasing "Folder Synchronizer" Mac OS X back-up software ($40 from http://www.softobe.com). I needed a product that would work with OS X, whose Unix permissions and multitude of invisible files make drag-and-drop back-ups a thing of the past, and, after sampling the slick, intuitive interface, "Folder Synchronizer" seemed to fit the bill.

After using "Folder Synchronizer" for a couple of weeks in what I thought was a successful manner, I used the software to back up all of my documents, folders and files before partioning my main hard drive. (I wanted to create a separate partition for OS X and Classic, as frequently recommended.)

I back-up my work daily onto a separate, removable hard drive and well know the value of protecting my computer, which is also my living (I'm a webmaster). Because partioning completely erases the drive you partition, I double and triple checked to make sure every last item was updated. (Folder Synchronizer reported NO errors on any of the ten back-ups I did and everything looked fine after a quick inspection of a few files on the back-up drive.)

I then partioned the drive, re-installed my systems (OS X and 9.2.2) and started moving items from my back-up onto my main drive. Everything went very smoothly until I got to my e-mail program--the most used and important program in my application arsenal. I use Microsoft's Entourage, and, as you may well know, Entourage stores all e-mail account data (addresses, old mail, drafts, etc.) in your "Documents" folder in a file called "Database."

Well, "Folder Synchronizer" had made a copy of the "Database" file, but it contained no information (0 KB on disk in "Show Info"). Now, my e-mail program is my life. It's how I connect with clients, where all my info (addresses, e-mail, form letters I send out regularly via e-mail, etc.) is stored and because it's so important I back it up along with all my other irreplaceable documents, as well as my current site designs, in at least two places. So, no problem, right? Since I double backed up my "Documents" folder in another, separate locale (done during its own, separate back-up, also using "Folder Synchronizer," unfortunately) I could just pop that "Database" file in instead, right? Wrong! "Folders Synchronizer" made TWO "zero data" copies of the file. (NOTE: It didn't say it was necessary but I always quit all programs, other than the finder of course, before running any back-up just so that there was no "in use" over-writing problems when copying files to another location). When it happens to two files, in two separate locations, this is not a random anomaly, but a real problem with "Folder Synchronizer." (The file was working fine just seconds before I ran the back-up--the last thing I did before I ran the final back-up and then partioned the drive was check my e-mail.)

The creator of "Folder Synchronizer" admitted in an e-mail that their $40 program is "just a beta version" (Who charges commercial software prices for betas? And who has a version 3.0 'beta'?) and that it doesn't currently do a file size match of data for verification of back-up success but they "hope" to include that in a later version. They also stated that they knew "Folder Synchronizer" had problems backing up large files, though that was NEVER noted in any of "Folder Synchronizer's" documentation, or I certainly wouldn't have purchased the product. (And, wouldn't by definition, larger files be even MORE important to back up, as they're more likely to get corrupted and more wor has likely gone into creating them?)

Anyway, just wanted to warn anyone else who is using this program of its MAJOR flaw so they don't go through the same disaster I'm going through. (I've lost 700 e-mail addresses, about that many "snail mail" addresses, since I also used Entourage as my regular address book, 10,000 old e-mails and about 20 form letters I had stored. The data is irreplaceable, which is the whole point of backing up in the first place.)

DARREN  Best tool I found after much testing of different sync/backup utilities. Worth every cent just for the Preview feature. Shame the sync doesn't quite work properly yet on OSX - you have to boot in OS 9 in the meantime to get the date comparison to work.
