JASONFANDORA  Great to see my favorite tweak application is updates regularly for new OS X 10.6 tweaks.

Although the interface is very similar to Onyx this is much cleaner and not overloaded with stuff no-one is using anyway.

Thanks to the DEV for making this free ! Great job.

ERIC  Fantastic utility .... great gui and works flawlessly.

Thank you Mr. Developer .... I'm going to recommend this to all my friends.

My wife used to absent mindedly drag things off the dock and wonder where the apps went.

She kept insisting that "the computer is doing weird things" ...

Since I used itweax and "locked dock icons" .... this problem has mysteriously disappeared.

Great!

ALGOS  I don't understand. I downloaded iTweax 2.0 yesterday from MU, and it seems to work fine on Leopard. Now the description says Leopard users have to use 1.2.8?

IVC DEVELOPER  To be more clear:

iTweaX 2.x is specially for OS X 10.6 or later and off-course Intel only

iTweaX 1.2.8 is for OS X 10.5.x and UB

BTW iTweaX 2.0 didn't test which OS you are running. This bug is fixed in 2.0.1

ENDORPHINITY  Here is a bug that prevents me from using iTweax. It requires admin password when launched, but doesn't allow to enter the user name, the appropriate edit field is just pre-filled with the current user name. The matter is that I don't use admin account usually and work under non-admin one.

SLOB  It's not a bug. It's the normal method for any program. If you want to make changes to how your system runs then log out and back in as admin. That's normal too.

ENDORPHINITY  SLOB, you didn't get my point. Applications designed properly always allow entering in authentication dialog not just a password, but changing suggested username as well. This one doesn't allow editing pre-filled current user name.

EXORZIST  Good looking window, especially for a RealBasic-Application... funny thing, having a >7MB-application to do this kind of job... hopefully, the programmer which programmed and compiled this with RealBasic learns to develop with Xcode and Obj-C. I could imagine that this task would be a good project for him/her to hop in the world of the pros.

JWDRISKELL  You can add it yourself, and it's easy. Open a Finder window and go to the root level of your drive (e.g., Macintosh HD [or the name of your boot volume] in the Devices section of the window's sidebar). Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Eject.menu. Double-click on Eject.menu. This will place the icon in your menu bar. If that isn't what you're after, you can get rid of it by Cmd-dragging it out.

Very good as an add to ONYX & Co !

HINT: This great tool is unique for deleting the new Safari 4 Beta Website Screenshoots, which you cant switch off.

You will find very much MB (often >> 500 MB) website screenshoots with that tool for deltion.

Try it - you will be happy to get rif of that very huge and useless website screenshoots using SF 4 Beta.

ANDYMARKS  Read this about blank passwords : http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25121

OSX10.5 above do not support blank passwords so you are missing a lot of things you cannot do anymore.

It seems OSX10.6 will drop blank password completely. So get used to it.

You are wrong. Mac OS X 10.5.x can easily be set up / installed with NO password. However, once you choose to add a password (in the "Accounts" Preference pane) you will never be able to go back to having no password without completely reinstalling the OS.

PATERSSON15  Hello,

The UI is very nice to work with. No unnecessary and non-hidden options. Maintenance and cache cleaning is a nice addition and works great.

A pity it's only available in english. German would be great!

MILES199  I do not encourage non admin users to alter system files on my mac.

For me it is a good thing itweax only works for admin users.

To the developer: do not change this. I certainly would not use itweax anymore when this is changed.

DANCO  In response to Miles.

As I said, some of the options are *user* preferences, and should be changeable by individual users without admin coming into it.

I agree that other options require admin privileges, but this does not necessarily require a user is logged in as admin, simply that an admin username and password is required. But there should be no way a non-admin user even knows the admin password unless, as in my case, only one person is using the machine and that person prefers to run routinely as a non-admin user.

When you say "I do not encourage non admin users to alter system files on my mac" my response is that it isn't a matter of encouraging or not, it should simply not be possible except in my situation, provided an admin name and password is asked for when needed.

TRANCE  This is my new favorite maintenance app.

The developer really knows what he is doing and has not just thrown in a bunch of scripts that may or may not work.

Still has a some improvements to add but this is easily on par with the best.

MARCTORRING  I have plenty experience with onyx and some where very (VERY) bad and some where actually good.

Nowadays I do not use onyx anymore but Tinkertools. But as Formica mentioned EVERY (also onyx and tinkertools) tweak tool is a potential hazard for ANY amateur osx user.

This said it is totally harmless when restricting to os tweaks and maintenance scripts. Clearing caches is also no problem IMO. The rebuilding tools are another question but in my experience this is mostly no problem either. But they should be used with care.

About itweax:

I really like the way it is organised and IMO it handles much better then onyx. Although there are similarities with onyx it's way more intuitive. itweax +1

All available tweaks do work! Something you definitely cannot say about onyx! Maybe this is because it has tweaks for several OSX versions. itweax +1

The restore function of itweax is handy and worked perfect for resetting tweaks. I like this feature very much indeed. itweax +1

itweax claims to remove a disabled tweak completely and it seems to work indeed. Onyx and macmagic doesn't do this. Tinkertool also delivers clean pref files. So when you disable all tweaks within itweax and tinkertools your pref files are clean too. This is one of the reasons I like itweax and tinkertool so much. It doesn't overload the pref files with unnecessary lines of code. itweax +1 (and tinkertool +1)

One other thing that bothers me about onyx: it is HUGH! I mean, +30MB in size? I agree, in these days ram isn't much of a problem but 30MB compiled code for such a small app is ridiculous. itweax and tinkertool are very small. itweax and tinkertool +1

It seems to be not written in cocoa. But not sure about that. itweax -1

itweax has need of some documentation - actually it hasn't got any. Onyx +1

To Formica: Don't know which version you used but in every version I used the version number is prompted in the about box. I also do not have to click on itweax to make in upfront.

And Versiontracker does mention PPC and Intel version. Macupdate don't...

My conclusion:

I like it ... I really like this tweak tool. But It needs some little tweaks to be perfect :-) . I have send the developer a mail with my remarks and requests.

FORMICA  I have not yet determined how dangerous this app is to those who know how to use it, but I am quite certain that it could easily be perilous in the hands of an amateur who is willing to try anything. So, if you don't already know a fair amount about the several system maintenance and cleaning operations iTweax can do, you probably should nit use it until you've read up on them. You can start here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintainingmacosx.html. But don't stop ther you should also download OnyX and read all its Help files (since iTweax doesn't have any).

In this reveiw am primarily comparing iTweax to OnyX, and so far I think OnyX comes out the clear winner in terms of capabilities. And considering all the little problems I've so far encountered with iTweax, I trust OnyX FAR more to carry out the many very powerful alterations that utilities of this sort are capable of. Partly that is because OnyX has been in very, very, very active development since its inception in June 2003 -- since then the developer (Joel Barriere) has released at least 102 versions!!!, and nearly all of them very highly lauded by some pretty particular Mac power users.

And now to the niggling details of iTweax:

There is no version number in the About menu.

Whenever I open it, it launches as a background application -- I have to click its window to bring it to the front just so I can verify with my password.

There is no mention on iTweax's MacUpdate.com page of the availability of Intel and PowerPC versions. There's just the Universal Binary that downloads from the link. The developer could easily list a couple of separate links for the Intel and PPC versions, rather than make us track down your website to find it ourselves.

More to come later.

MARC1970  "because OnyX has been in very, very, very active development since its inception in June 2003"

rotfl ... I guess the question here is : Why on earth did it take several years to make such a small app as onyx bug free? Makes me think twice about the skill of the onyx developer. :)
