HUTCHBAY  Doesn't work on my Safari 4.0.4 on OS X 10.5.8. After installation, I see a Cookies item in Safari Preferences, but when I click that I get the perma-beachball and Safari eventually crashes. Nice theory.

DAVID210  I've had major issues running Safari Cookies on my MacBook Pro intel on 10.5.8 - thanks to a comment from the developer I tried getting rid of SafariStand 4.0L168 and I finally got SC back!

Still don't understand why the latest version of SafariStand for Leopard didn't play nice with SC on Intel but worked fine on my 10.5.8 PPC machine? Doesn’t really matter in the end - Safari Cookies is much more valuable. Thanks for a great cookie manager!

LOUNGE DELUXE  Again when updating from within Safari I get this error message: "Update Error! An error occurred while extracting the archive. Please try again later.".

I think SafariCookies is a terrific 'plugin' and I can't imagine my computer life without it, and I don't mind downloading the update and installing it manually, but what's the point of an integrated update function when it doesn't work? SC is freeware so I'm not blaming the dev in any way, I'm just expressing my wish for a fix of this error.

PAULMREIZ  Just a mere technicality, but isn't the statement "Cookie manager integrates directly into Safari" misleading now that SIMBL is a requirement?

Safari Cookies used to be my cookie manager of choice before Snow Leopard and the SIMBL requirement.

BOLLYWOOD  Apart from building a background process that sits around waiting for Safari to open. SIMBL is the only way to get this working.

in fact SIMBL is already doing exactly that..... Glims, and 1Password have their own background processes running.

So the more Plugins you have installed, the more background daemons your computer is going to need. Seeing as how, a lot of other plugins are utilising the 'sniffing' SIMBL is doing, it makes sense to use it. And, to be honest, i would like to have as few processes running as possible.

Just pointing out that this is not a "direct" Safari cookie manager any more, and that you should consider changing the description.

MACHEADCASE  Thanks for your reply.

I solved it! I found on your web site an older version, the one I used before installing the update, Safari Cookies 0.8.2 and made sure it was installed in the InputManagers folder. I dragged to the trash the newer Safari Cookies that was in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins to the trash, restarted Safari and it showed up. *Phew!*

I had tried this before and still don't know why this time it worked.

And the other plugins I use are Saft, GlimmerBlocker, Glims, 1Password, Safari AdBlock and SafariBlock. As you can see, I hate ads. :-D

So I'm only going to upgrade Safari Cookies once I install Snow Leopard, I'm not touching this one before that.

MACHEADCASE  So I updated to Safari Cookies 1.2.1 (previous install was 0.82, I think) because I got a notification from inside Safari that there was a newer version.

I got an error from the installer so I decided to quit Safari and install it manually. I used the uninstaller and then before updating, I read the "Read Me" saying I needed to install the 64-bit SIMBL version (latest version I saw was SIMBL-0.9.7a on the developer's web site) but this version is for Snow Leopard only.

I tried installing Safari Cookies 1.2.1 anyway since it comes with the Leopard version of SIMBL, 0.8.2 as well as the SIMBL 0.9.6c Snow Leopard version. But now it doesn't work anymore. Safari does not see it. I looked in the Input Managers folder (path: /Library/InputManagers) and there is nothing there except the SIMBL folder and the other Safari plugins I use like 1Password, Glims, etc.

However Safari Cookies 1.2.1 does show up in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins just like SafariStand but neither work, they don't appear when I use Safari like they never were installed.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Safari Cookies 3 times to no avail. I can't seem to backtrack and reinstall the previous Safari Cookies version either. I really liked this plugin and wish to find a way to get it to work again, this is very frustrating.

Just to make sure, I even restarted my iMac but still no joy. Is there anything else I can try to get it back?

Specs:

iMac Intel Core 2 Duo (early 2009) 3.06 GHz

ATI Radeon HD 4850

Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30)

JIMW  This product is a must have in my opinion. It just keeps getting better and better. I would love to write a full review on it but at the rate the developer keeps improving it and adding more great features, it never seems to get stable long enough for a review to accurately reflect its features for any length of time.

However unless something dramatically changes, I expect I will give it 5 Stars. Too bad their aren't more available. I am of the opinion that this is the greatest tool since Finder Pop, Pithelment, and Default Folder.

AESCHYLUS  I have been using Safari Cookies without any trouble in Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.1. There is no "slow down" in deleting cookies. If you are experiencing this, it may be related to a problem I had earlier.

The problem was not actually with Safari Cookies, but with another add-on called Glims. I found that if I used Glims, Safari kept eating up more and more memory, and of course it took nearly forever to open pages, or to delete cookies.

I had very good luck with Glims in 10.5, but whenever I reinstall it, Safari slows down again. If you are using other input managers for Safari, try using Safari without them if you find things are slow.

Safari Cookies has worked well for the past several versions for me.

MITCH_DE  I think that really problematic waiting on respone depends on the count of cookies !

Best is to use favorites and so you can have the cookies cleaned up very fast.

So the big waitings are only on the first use of that great cookie manager, not after an first +BIG cookie cleanup.

But i think that speed with lots of cookies (beginning of use of the manager) should be speed up by code changes.

JCDS  I don't understand your argumentation.

SIMBL and Safari Cookies were InputManagers in Leopard; they all injected codes in Safari.

Now on SL they are no more InputManagers because Apple forbid them.

SIMBL has moved to a ScriptingAdditions (osax) and Safari Cookies uses it.

I prefer much more an osax then an Input Manager.

BOLLYWOOD  If you are experiencing problems after updating to Version 1.x from Version 0.8 or below

Check inside the folder /Library/InputManagers/ if there is a folder named "Safari Cookies". move it to the trash (you may need to authenticate)

Because Safari Cookies, has moved from being an InputManager, to being a SIMBL plugin - you may need to manually remove the older version. (if you didnt uninstall SC before upgrading)

ROBOTANK  There's no need to revert just because you can't automatically import favourites. In my case, the favourites were carried over. However, even if they weren't (that is, if the uninstaller removed them), all you need is a very simple manual process. Before uninstalling the old version, move or copy the file ~/Library/Application Support/Safari Cookies/Favorites.plist to your desktop or wherever, so it doesn't get uninstalled. After installing the new version, simply move the file back to its original location, replacing any newly created favourites file.

ROBOTANK  I really miss Safari Cookies. I hope we see a 64-bit update soon. As far as I know, there are now two possible methods for loading plugins into 64-bit Safari. One involves the method that 1Password, Glims, and Speed Download (and probably others) are using, which is to use a scripting addition coupled with a background process. The second option is to use either SIMBL 0.9.x or Pumba (similar to SIMBL, developed by CocoaMug Software for their TabExposé plugin) to load bundles. I'm guessing the second method would be easier, since it would only require the plugin to be recoded in 64-bit and not require an entirely new method of loading it. In any case, thanks to the developer for your excellent work on Safari Cookies. I hope you're able to work out a solution for Snow Leopard soon.

ROBOTANK  Great little add-on. Safari's lack of site-specific preferences is one of the main reasons I generally prefer OmniWeb. With the release of Safari 4, however, I wanted to give it a spin for a while, because I find it generally outperforms OmniWeb. Safari Cookies gives me improved control over cookies, something I consider essential. This along with Glims and GlimmerBlocker make Safari useable, something I find it isn't out of the box.

KAOSAD  Try using the export/import favorites feature, that's why it's there. It's not the dev's problem you that you can't be bothered to backup your favorites. Sad to see a one star rating because a user can't be bothered to backup or learn the app first. I've never had a problem and I always uninstall the old version first.

GORDON142  The problem with this is the sheer number of cookies that get set whenever you go anywhere. You'd have to click through a dozen or so dialogs each and every time you clicked on a link. I remember this feature being unmanageable years ago when it was standard in most browsers, and I'm sure cookie propagation has only increased in the last five years.

MACTECHHEAD  @GORDON142 this might not be manageable for you but for people like me that only surf a few sites it would make more sense to have full control of which cookies I accept and which ones I refuse.

I'm sick and tired of clearing out tracking cookies from advertising banners and google-analytics!!!

Or better yet , offer a way to refuse any cookies from sites I don't want them from.

HAWAIIAN STARMAN  v .41 recreates the "favorites" problem with Glims, i.e. on the restart after Safari Cookies install, all favorites are unchecked. By contrast, v 4 corrected the bug. Seems like a step backward.

Had to revert to v .4, and also reestablish my Safari Preferences from an earlier version of com.apple.safari.plist to reestablish my favorites - again!

HAWAIIAN STARMAN  Until today, Safari Cookies (thru v 3) worked pretty well. However, after a Safari restart all of the favorites selected (119) have reverted to a non-favorite status.

I'm using Safari 4 Beta on an Intel Mac 10.5.6. Rather daunting to recreate the favorites. I have Time Machine operating. What file do I restore to recover the favorites without having to recreate the entire list? The only change was installing a beta version of Glims (v 16).

As an aside, I notice at times cookies reappear that seemingly were removed.

HAWAIIAN STARMAN  Thanks. I figured it out via trial/error. Would be nice to have better documentation about how cookies are managed behind the GUI.

Seems when I installed the latest version of Glims (v 16) i the preference file was altered, perhaps affecting the cookies favorite information (assumption on my part, however, that's the only change I made which would have impacted Safari's preference file).

Restoring an older version of preferences (gotta love Time Machine) reestablished the favorites. I'll send notice to Glims' developers.

DKHALEY  Great app! I especially like the way you can make cookies "favorites" and set it to delete all other cookies when you close Safari.

I would suggest adding the option of a cookie "purgatory". A user could optionally choose to move non-favorites to purgatory when Safari closes. This would move them to a directory where websites couldn't read them, but would allow the user to review whether or not to keep them. And it would purge itself in x days if there was no action.

One thing that I really don't understand about cookies (ok, I am not an expert) is how it can or could be dangerous? anyone has bad experiences? I have not any, but annoys me to see that list of unwanted cookies ... ads, etc.

NOTAFOOL  I cannot follow this at all. I downloaded and installed this application, and can see the "Safari Cookies" folder in my "InputManagers" folder. In that folder are only 2 items, i.e. an "Info" file and a "Safari Cookies.bundle" file. Double-clicking on either of those files fails to open either of them. In particular, double-clicking on the "bundle" file results in the message, "There is no default application specified to open the document "Safari Cookies.bundle". What does all that mean ? Where does one FIND the application itself to configure it ? Is there not supposed to also be an Uninstaller somewhere installed. Where is it ? And where do I go to get the "Cookies" configuration/set-up - as shown on the screen-shot on the MacUpdate page ? I've tried everything, but cannot find any such screen. Should I being seeing a Preference Pane somewhere in "System Preferences" ? I do not see any such pane. I am running an iMac G5 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with OSX Leopard 10.5.6. JIMW  I have been looking for something like this for years. It is great to see a new product that does not try 'to reinvent the wheel' but instead really does something new and different from currently available and up to date products. While this is something that Apple should have made part of Safari, they didn't, and it is much appreciated that this developer is providing it, especially for free. I cant describe the countless hours I have spent editing cookies to protect my information and privacy. This product now virtually eliminates that task.

FEMIGH  Finally, the only really good and automatic cookie manager for any browser - a worthy successor to Safari Plus. Been waiting anxiously for a successor since Safari Plus went out of date. As with SP, SC provides easily managed cookie categories, with only marked-as-favorite source categories surviving a Safari Quit (my Safari is version 4beta). No more manually vetting an endless list of individual cookies many from the same website. My only question is why such a low version number? SC 0.1.2 seems to be behaving like an advanced beta, almost ready to go golden. I am ready to donate when the version number gets close to 1.0.
