TAREED  Fate can be fun, if you're into pure hack and slash gaming. However, it has some other problems that make me recommend against it.

First, it won't run on a non-admin account. So, if you expected to be able to install it and have your kids play it from their accounts, don't even bother to download it. I even sent an e-mail to the folks who did the Mac port, and got the following one-sentence reply: "Some guys are not designed to run on non-admin accounts."

Second, it's got some weird launch quirks like no app I've ever seen before. I can't launch it from Quicksilver or from the Recent Items menu. I see the Dock twitch a little, like something launched and quit before it could fully appear on the Dock, and then nothing. This concerns me a bit, mostly because I wonder, as a developer, how the heck they managed to make it do that! (It does this on two machines that I tested it on, so it's not a problem with the machine.)

Finally, it's got some crash problems. In the short time I've had it, it has quit unexpectedly once and the sound degenerated to static and squeals once until I quit the game.

DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  DO NOT PURCHASE THIS GAME (unless you have strong will against addictive games). This game is very similar to Diablo I & II in terms of most aspects such as character development and game play. I purchased the game after and have spent numerous enjoyable hours (sans sleep) exploring and building up my character. One very fine aspect of the game is having a pet dog which returns your booty back to the town level and returns with the cash. This keeps you in the dungeons/caves doing what you should be doing - duking it out and building your character. Overall, the game is solid and plays with a high level of enjoyment. So go ahead. Buy it. Lose yourself for a few days or weeks. Buy it now. - Denny Crane

ACHIM2  I used to play the PC version and I'm happy to have it on the Mac now. Quite a few bugs, but playable. And as addictive as ever.

- sound switches off completely for a few seconds if you open a trap.

- speech has very low volume. Volume sliders in Options don't help.

- many texts nearly illegible because of "\010" strings scattered throughout

- aspect ratio in wide mode (iMac 24') seems off (different than e.g. 1024x768)

- translation errors (e.g. the german translation for those "large chests" that start to bite as soon as you try to open them is missing - so you always know it's a mimic and not a chest).

- Windows manual - don't tell me to install DirectX on my Mac, OK?

I hope those issues will be taken care of in an update. And the successor should also be made availabe for OSX.
