EASER  Does anyone still have a copy of the iLeopard theme that goes with Kameleon? I lost mine and hope someone would be willing to send it to me. Thanks.

RUBAIYAT  You have to wonder about a developer whose .dmg installer opens as text in a browser.

I must write that book "The Idiots Guide to Software Distribution".

It would include dumb names or acronyms that don't match the application name, oddball archives, instant decompression that leaves you with NO archive, no instructions, no explanation of the software ("I know, so you must"), peculiar and awkward registration, pugly interface and icons, manuals in Amharic, no manuals, dead links, etc, etc.

EASER  I've had no trouble with it. I'm not involved with it. If anything, I had high hopes for Facade, but that project seems dead in the water. As for whether Kameleon steals themes, well, I assume that themers have copyrights and can always file lawsuits if those are infringed. I still see lots of sites (including MacUpdate) that offer Shapeshifter themes for free. How is one to know if a theme has been stolen?

HAPPYSUDSY  Sounds as if the only people interested in this Krapmeleon is those that are involved in the project. Again if themers wouldn't theme, you're program would be useless and no one would buy it. So unless you are giving back to the theme developers, you are stealing from them.

If Kameleon even worked well (It doesn't) I'd not even use it because of this.

ROBOTANK  I successfully ran Kameleon after updating to 10.5.5 and it seems to have worked normally. I was hesitant to do this after all the reports of Kameleon causing crashes on the new version of iTunes, but since I had a fresh backup, I gave it a shot. So, if anyone else was waiting to let someone else try it first, here you go.

OPETER  I do like it.

It was included in the last MUPromo Bundle and works OK in 10.5.4. If you go to Kameleons website it says, that Kameleon 2.0 is on the way.

So for those who use iTunes 8, maybe that one will work?

PAWS  There is so many bad comments on this app that I'd like share my experience. I got this app as an extra from MuPromo bundle (Back to School). I had also trouble with the first reg code, but the second one worked just fine. I installed Kameleon, Disingenuous theme, both to System and iTunes. iTunes was prior to 8 (7.x) – I intended not to upgrade to iTunes 8.0 because all the crashing experiences people got. But – I forgot I had downloaded (but not installed) iTunes 8.0 with Software Update days before... So when I booted my MacBookPro, iTunes 8.0 got installed! I can tell you that I was really surprised that everything still worked just fine - even iTunes 8.0. Actually new Kameleon skin looks very nice! I don't know what causes the crashing problem all the other people got, but mine works flawlessly. Maybe it's that I installed Kameleon first and iTunes 8.0 (34) after that. I have a myriad of other programs installed and started at login, so it's not a question of "clean" system - far from that. ;-) I have Leopard 10.5.4. I suggest that the developer of Kameleon should check the installation issues if there's something wrong with that...

...

All I want to say is, that Kameleon works just fine with iTunes 8.0 - if the right conditions (?) are met! ;-)

KENAME  Does anyone have any ideas about the time-line for 2.0? Or for support/changes to the 1.0.3 version?

I'm really interested in whether or not this will require a paid upgrade.

ROBOTANK  I got this app with the latest bundle offering. I won't say more about the issues surrounding that, but I did give this app a try. Changing the Leopard theme posed no issues. It was fast and seemed to work perfectly well. The only downside to this aspect of the app is the lack of choice in different themes, which will hopefully be improved in the future. Now, as you may have already heard: DO NOT use this app on iTunes 8. There were numerous posts on the MacUpdate promo page and now one on this page warning against this. From what I've read the only way to fix iTunes after attempting to run Kameleon is to reinstall it.

Sometimes new versions of applications cause problems with older apps that try to modify them. This in itself is hardly a crime, but the developers should warn of this issue on their web site. As it stands, there is almost nothing at all on the web site, much less a warning about the iTunes issue. I'm not quite sure what to make of this app. I guess we'll see what happens when version 2.0 is ready.

PASCAL WEINGUNI  The idea is great, but the application is poor. I would have loved to have something like what shapeshifter used to be, or even better.

The application offers only 3 new themes! That's it. (A matter of taste: I wouldn't install any of them.)

Then if you want some more information about the application or maybe a theme developping tool on the developpers site there's... nothing!!!

The developpers site is a blank page, with a logo (no link) and an e-mail adress.

I think, the developpers idea was good, but it's faaaaaaaaaar to early to launch the application... and worse to want to sell it.

Pascal

P.S. If one day a support, a dev kit, and a theme sharing platform appears... I'll change my mind and promote Kameleon. Hope for it.

IGAUCHO  I'm always cautious of these types of apps. While I like the idea of customizing my OS since Apple allows very little in that area, I wonder if things will break when there's an OS update. Anyone have experience with this one?

EASER  Although I appreciated Kameleon, I don't know. I haven't seen a single new theme since I bought it. The upcoming "Facade" looks like it's going to be the new direction for theming.

EASER  I believe that, yes, this is the future of Shapeshifter (or its replacement). Check out http://macthemes2.net/ for more discussion about the future of OS X theming. I've been using a stand-alone version of iLeopard, which gives my overall system an iTunes look, and it's been pretty nice. Presumably, the future of theming will be a lot less complicated and more flexible for themers. I just now decided to purchase Kameleon because it appears to be the leader of the pack, and I want to support theming development. I no longer trust Unsanity to much of anything right. WindowShade is still buggy, and it's been what - a year now? Do you really trust them with Shapeshifter when they can't get WindowShade to work properly?

MACNERD1984  Nice to see someone has managed to get theming working in Leopard. As a paid up owner of ShapeShifter my blood boils when I think of the slackers over at Unsanity who still haven't managed to get anything going on. They ought to get together with William Bart to work on their releases, then we can all get them some time in the next century. Maybe. Anyway, rant over.

Unfortunately for Kameleon, there are very few themes available at the moment, but if the theming community can start to migrate to this app then we may well see some really strong stuff becoming available and those of us who are using Leopard can finally start personalising our Macs again without having to wait on some flaky developer who doesn't appear bothered about it's customers.

GEORGEWS  This is a fantastic app, because it does what is advertised; it themes Leopard, and it does it with simplicity and ease. Well worth the money, because it saves me from trying to use installers and puts it all into one convenient app that works smoothly and quickly.

MACGEEK914  I love this application so much! I like being able to theme my system and feel confident because of the easy backups being made. I also like the Download feature to download themes which I don't have installed. Only downside is that changing system files can cause damage, but I haven't experienced any damage at all.

****.

EINGEBILDET  Appears to do what it claims for the overall system interface, which has been kind of a holy grail in the Mac-theming community ever since Leopard came out.

iTunes theming doesn't seem to work as advertised though, at least not on 7.7.1. My initial attempt resulted in a hang because I hadn't used the 7.7.1 version yet. Kameleon triggers iTunes to launch, but the SLA windows is hidden by the Kameleon window, resulting in an eternal spinning beachball while Kameleon waits for iTunes main window to come up. When I went back and clicked agree on the SLA window, quit iTunes, and then tried again with Kameleon, it failed to change the appearance of iTunes, but no hang this time.
