DUKE OLIVER Grr, been having problems downloading the latest version (m). I've tried on 2 computers using different connections. I just get "decompression failed" or "mounting failed." Anyone else having this issue? I've tried the dmg and the zip downloads. It just doesn't download all the way through! I've gone to other sites to try and download, but still get the same issues.

SCOTTJMCHUGH Hey Duke Oliver, Which version of OS X and web browser are you trying to expand it with? I tested the links on a MacBook running 10.4 and 10.5 (Safari/FireFox 3) and they decompressed correctly. I re-compressed the Intel version to see if that has any effect- you can nab it from here: http://www.redkitsune.org/files/kgoIntelv9mv2.zip Version .9m includes an additional dictionary file as well, so it uses 75 MB when decompressed. Let me know if you have any luck with the link above - if not, I'll keep digging to see if I can't reproduce the error. | |

DUKE OLIVER Using the new macbook, running the most recent version of OS X. Tried the link you gave me and again it only downloaded for about 20 seconds, stopped, then gave me "decompression failed." I'm using Safari and the default download manager, got the same error with Firefox. So odd! | |

SCOTTJMCHUGH Hey Duke Oliver, Thanks for trying out that new link - and sorry for the weird dl bug! Try #2: I thought I'd change things up a bit, so instead of compressing it with OS X's built in Compress feature, I tried using a 3rd party compressor tool (BetterZip). If you have a chance, could you try the link below? http://www.redkitsune.org/files/kgoIntelv9mv3.zip Hm, I did some research, and others have run into similar problems as a result of intervening proxies/ISPs between their PC and the remote website. MAC MAIL It would be a great feature if copy & paste can be worked on those words. Not everyone can type Japanese or Chinese (especially on the Mac keyboard).

SCOTTJMCHUGH Hey Mac Mail, Thanks for your feedback- what sort of copy and paste support would you find most helpful? I added in a feature in version .9k where double clicking an entry will copy its Kanji to the clipboard. For entries in the Kanji dictionary (purple stripe), you can also double click them to see a window with detailed information including the Readings etc, and copy them from there as well. | |

ZANGIEF Very useful for me, as I am teaching myself Japanese mostly by reading and observing (I've always been drawn to language, so it didn't take me long before I figured out the basic grammar and could read the kana). This helps me a lot because I can look up any kanji I don't know by radical, and then I can see the reading and definition, which in turn lets me understand the sentence or whatever it is. Once there are more verbs with conjugation info on them, this will be one of the best Japanese reference utilities out there. Used in conjunction with Mac OS X 10.5's editions of Japanese dictionaries (forget their names), this is a very powerful and easy-to-use learning and reference tool.

I usually shoot for a new release about once a week to maintain momentum, though when users report a bug I'll generally release a fix within 24 hours- which resulted in the two versions in 2 days. | |

STORMCHILD Heh. I haven't even had a chance to try this out yet, and I've already installed 5 updates. Not that there's anything wrong with a developer working hard and constantly fixing and adding things. Looks good, in any case. I'm interested in the review aspect, as I can't see anything replacing JEDict as my main dictionary. But I'm preparing for JLPT 2 and it's gonna be tough, so everything helps. For anyone learning kanji, I also strongly recommend this excellent site: It's centered around the Remembering the Kanji (James Heisig) method for learning kanji, which I also recommend.

PORCUSTAL Thanks to the developer for creating this great application. its very simple, very easy, and really helps learning, especially when used with a book. Its lacking some basic usability features which i hope are added soon like editing your vocab lists. (deleting words or rearranging them) and optional sizes of the exported flash cards. But definitly a great start!

BOUSOZOKU I've found the application useful. Not only does it give exact information about a word, but it can also give related idioms. I'm not sure of the source of the information, but it seems that it misses some honorific data, i.e., o-senbei, o-yu. Japanese can be used without the honorific prefixes, but it's important to use it. One thing I noticed when I upgraded from .7d to .7e is that I lost my list, even though I had used the File->Save option. The data should be stored in the user's data area, not within the application itself.

I've just released version .8 of Kanji Go, which now places its vocab lists in the user's Library/Application Support/Kanji Go folder, so vocab lists will be preserved across versions. When upgrading from v.7.x to this one, I recommend using File>Export to save your current vocab lists, and then importing them into the new one. If you have any other feedback, please let me know. | |
