CEILING CAT Very pretty, but be warned that it doesn't behave quite like normal screensavers. You can't have the time overlaid, and if you use it with something like Status Screen Saver ( http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27591/status-screen-saver ) then you can't reconfigure your screensaver without temporarily moving or deleting X-Galaxy... The problem seems to be that it's creating a full screen toplevel window whenever it's called, which is probably why there's no live preview function on the Screen Saver prefpane. It's not a fatal issue, but it certainly lowers its attractiveness for powerusers. The only saving grace here seems to be the built-in quit hotkey (cmd-W) which is listed in the attached documentation - but how many people are going to do that? Of course, even using this hotkey won't stop it from loading up next time you open the prefpane, hence the aforementioned requirement for (re)moving it from your Screen Savers folders. There's been no attempt to use the Options screen, not even to allow the user to access the programmer's homepage. Considering the Multithemes.com website button is prominently displayed both in the preview pane and in the background of the installation .dmg, it was surprising to find that it was totally nonfunctional; as this freebie is being used as a promotional tool for another of the developer's projects, this seems like a wasted opportunity. Certainly there could have been other options included as well, such as colour variations in the (beautifully rendered) 3D vortex, or user replacement of the sadly low-res bitmap that rotates halfheartedly to fill the background. In summation then: an eyecatching display that fulfills the basic brief of screensaver, but that falls short of its own potential. The lack of any configuration, personalisation, or even the ability to use Apple's provided screensaver overlays, means I can't really give this more than a 3 at this time. (Version 1.0) |
