MJKPHOTO  RipIt now has a different licensing structure. Waiting to hear from the new developer on a license for the version I purchased with the MUPromo. This version only allows 10 rips before requiring registration.

I just tried to Rip a movie. The software transferred the data, showed 100% complete, but then sat there spinning, doing nothing. Ultimately failed.

Disappointingly, this software doesn't work.

GHOSTWRITER  I had purchased in the past 2 versions of this nice little app! One from a Macupdate promo and one direct from the shareware author/publisher. I just tries to install version 1.3 and it wants serial key. None of my serials seem to work, so I emailed support and was issued a new key, however, I don't remember this application being part of a company in Australia called "The Little App Factory." What am I missing here?

ITTY  Still the best at what it was designed to do. The fastest, easiest way to back up a DVD.

It will need another update to handle the recently released Pixar's UP. But for every other disk I have tried, RipIt comes thru with flying colors.

DEMORAY  In a previous review I gave RipIt five stars. I still use and love RipIt, as it has ripped many DVDs that other ripping apps couldn't manage. RipIt's decryption capabilities are the best I've come across for the Mac. However in recent weeks I've experienced a rather serious problem with RipIt that I've seen mentioned by others users.

The Issue:

RipIt will report a rip as being completed successfully, even when the rip is actually defective.

It's one thing for rip software to fail a rip, they all do it occasionally. It's another thing entirely for rip software to fail a rip and yet report it as successful.

In my case this problem has only occurred two times in about forty rips. Not bad odds. Yet the serious nature of this flaw means I now need to check each ripped file to make certain that it's a one-for-one copy of the original.

This issue needs to be addressed by the developers ASAP.

MSM126  It's been over a month. Multiple attempts at getting an email response from the developer on the numerous issues with this app. No reply.

The claimed successful rip rate for this app is bogus. Do NOT buy it with out first trying to rip movies AND watching the rips. The app reports success, yet when you watch the ripped movies you'll find that I high percentage are messed up with chapters out of order, repeated and in some cases missing.

Try ripping Bolt. Try ripping many others. Just make sure you watch them, rather than relying on RIpIt to tell you whether the rip is successful.

MSM126  RipIt has a very simple UI, which is great if the product worked as reliably as claimed.

I bought RipIt as we have a 600+ DVD library that I'm converting for use on a Mac mini based home theater PC running PLEX. (PLEX is simply awesome!) In my experience the developer claims about successful rip rates are grossly overstated. Worse yet, not a single reply to any of my emails for support.

Summary of my results with RipIt:

- 32% failure rate in successfully ripping DVDs

That's outrageous and I guess a contributing factor to the disappearance of the user forums that were previously hosted by the developer. What makes RipIt especially troublesome is that it reports DVDs as successfully ripped almost 100% of the time. I had 3 movies out of 157 that RipIt reported at the end of the process were not ripped and 2 DVDs that just crashed the software. That's 5 out of 157, not bad at all. Until my family starts watching the ripped DVDs and starts to discover how jumbled, messed up and in some cases just in complete the rips are. Chapters out of order, repeated chapters and in some cases movies that were clearly missing large chunks of the movie.

This is hands down the worst software I've ever purchased. The UI is great, but the actual software just doesn't work reliably.

I've switched back to using Handbrake. UI is not as slick. It takes longer, but the plus being you end up with a file less than 1/2 the size. Oh, and the BIG plus? It works.

DEMORAY  RipIt ROCKS!

I recently downloaded demos for 7 of the most popular DVD ripping apps available for the Mac, (I wont mention names), because I was having problems ripping a few recently purchased DVD movies.

In short, all apps failed to rip these particular movies except RipIt.

There were various issues and errors given by the other 6 apps, some due to limitations of the rip software, some due to my particular system, (2009 Intel iMac), and several due to copy protection on the DVDs. Nevertheless, RipIt ripped every DVD I gave it without a single problem! I will be buying this app.

If your ripping software is working for you, great, stick with it. But if you're running into problems ripping DVDs like I was, check out RipIt. It WILL RipIt, and RipIt good. [whip-crack sound]

ROBO-X  I bought my version of RipIt with the MacPromo bundle at the end of May and when I tried it for the first time it crashed while ripping. I had very limited disk space so it might have been that. Since then I upgraded my HD and there have been a few updates so I tried it again. When I try to use the built in update it says that an error occured and when trying to Rip a DVD it says that the Demo period has expired. I bought this version and now it says it has expired. I am disappointed and it's hard to rate and recommend this to anyone as it has never worked for me.

MSM126  The successful rip claims made by RipIt are way overstated.

The very first DVD I tried to rip failed. The second DVD I tried to rip, “successfully” ripped according to RipIt but when playing the movie it was a jumble with chapters out of order and in some cases duplicated chapters.

I evaluated RipIt as I am looking for something that will help improve the conversion of the 700+ DVD library for easy access through Plex. RipIt is definitely not it.

If youÂ’re thinking about buying it, make SURE you take full advantage of the trial period to test it on DVDs. YouÂ’re likely to find, as I did, that about 40% of DVDs donÂ’t work. Many of those will rip, but when you go to watch them Â… well Â… youÂ’ll find the rips are a mess.

The UI is great. I like the focus on simplicity. Alas at the end of the process, the rips are far too often useless, which makes RipIt a huge waste of money.

CORPSECORPS  Has essentially become completely useless!

Supposedly rips basically anything i give it, but the result can rarely be played even by Apple DVD player. (erroneously reports things like the movie being the wrong region, or skips, or jams)

Even if it does play, virtually every app to do anything with the result, such as extract a title, convert to other formats, burn, remaster, or whatever, chokes on the result, or creates garbage from it.

Zero forward progress since TheLittleAppFactory took it over. :(

THE CROW  This is a fantastic ripper, and works flawlessly most of the time (some of the newest movies introduce new DRM mechanisms that fool RipIt, but the developer updates the software very quickly). A recent update broke RipIt on my G5 Mac, but after an email to the developer, it was fixed and a new release posted within the day - that is amazing.

The software does a great job of making a perfect duplicate, free of its protection schemes, which the user can then use to backup their movie, or run through Handbrake to convert to an AppleTV or iPod format.

DRU KEPPLE  Sorry to post a question in the review section, but that's MacUpdate's fault for not having a question section!

So, it seems that there's quite a bit of disagreement on this forum about what exactly RipIt is good for. It sounds like some have had some good success on ripping otherwise hard-to-rip discs, and others have not.

Here's a specific question: how well does RipIt handle recent Pixar releases? I've been quite happy with HandBrake (and optionally Mac the Ripper), but they've choked on Ratatouille and Wall-e, and I've had to turn to enormously complex alternate routes that involved PC software, demuxing software, and DVD Studio Pro. If I could just get a decrypted disc image onto my Mac easily, I'm sure this wouldn't be such a pain.

It seems like Disney and Pixar have been putting crazy tough encryption on their discs lately...who can free these discs? Who can liberate this media to its rightful place in iTunes? Is RipIt the One?

CORPSECORPS  Seem to be some nasty regressions in recent Ripit versions for many people. In my case, it seems to rip most anything i give it... kinda.

Occasionally the result won't even play with Apple's DVD Player, and when it does, the rip will usually confound just about every re-authoring and conversion tool i try.

MSM126  In my experience, RipIt does not do nearly as well as the company and review claims here.

If RipIt claims to have successfully ripped a DVD, make sure you watch it to validate that is the case. I've found that many (about 40% of the ones I've done) do not. Often the issue is chapters are out of order, duplicated or missing.

Like other users, I have also found that other apps that I use in the workflow of converting my DVD library to watch on Plex (plexapp.com) will not work with the output from RipIt.

I think there have been a lot of very shallow reviews done on RipIt. Make sure you evaluate very carefully during the trial period before buying. RipIt, in my experience at least, does NOT work nearly as well as claimed.

***..

AIKOUSHA  I can't really say anything good about this because I couldn't get it to rip a single DVD, other than the one that was burned by my DVD-Recorder (that was to see if there was a drive incompatibility with the program, which there isn't).

I tried 5 discs that were tough for other rippers. Yet, it couldn't get a singe one, usually failing within 20 seconds of starting. All the DVDs play flawlessly in an ancient region-free DVD player.

It doesn't have features... it's supposed to just rip DVDs, but I have 3 free apps that do this, and at least one of them will read images, so it plays well with fair mount. This doesn't. I gave it a 2 because if it really worked, one feature would be more than enough... and, unlike previous versions, it no longer seems to freak out over non-matching region discs. However, it shouldn't even have to deal with that, and I'm not really certain that that might still be the issue, as there is nothing that tells you why it stops or has trouble with discs.

Ease of use... same as above, you stick in a DVD disc. Hmmm, but that didn't always work, it often didn't realize the disc was in there, even though the system did. Often requiring an eject and then re-insertion. However, due to the lack of recognizing a disc as an image, I had to knock it down to a one. Every disc I gave it might have succeeded if it did. At least one disc does this with one of the free apps.

Value: if I have to pay $20 for something that won't read the discs everything else I have won't, then it's fairly useless. Start working like some of the Windows-side apps (or the old "Locksmith" program from Apple II days) then you will quickly get a "5."

It didn't crash, but it halts rather quickly on everything I threw at it, and it does have that odd quirk of sometimes not recognizing the disc is there.

On top of that, it only works under Leopard. What feature of Leopard is an absolute requirement in a DVD ripper? It certainly isn't helping this program read commercial discs.

Looking forward to a major upgrade. Hopefully by then it can rip the older discs (5+ years old) that I gave it, as well as the newer ones with sophisticated protections.

DANMARC  well it´s simplistic I know but it can handle quite a few DVD´s I have thrown at it ...so full respect . Have used Handbrake and MTR (ahh my classic ; ) ) but they have their own quirky behavior and lets face it Ripit is basic indeed but that is in my opinion not bad thing.

Only odd behavior would be the "complete" package file it creates...but in the those instances I need to split those files I use Handbrake.

MTR hasn´t (officially) bee upgraded for a long time so right here right now I really enjoy the simplicity of Ripit (AND the constant updates19

RIPIT  DVDRemaster recompresses the movie, introducing artifacts and decreasing image/sound quality -- by how much, depends on the settings and the way that the disc was mastered to begin with. It won't deal with complicated DRM/Copy-Protection.

RipIt produces disc images with no image/sound quality degradation. It will deal with compliated DRM/Copy-Protection. For some discs, it's best to use RipIt before using DVDRemaster.

When you go to RipIt's Help menu it just takes you to a feedback link.

An odd way to assure potential customers that your software works!

Why would you put the extracted RIP in a package in the first place?

I think a modicum of instructions would be a good idea for an app that has such a minimalist UI.

RIPIT  Thanks for taking the time to report this! :) (We respond a little faster through the support channel at support@ripitapp.com.)

The most recent version of Handbrake fully supports the .dvdmedia package. We chose to use the .dvdmedia in order to make the user experience a little more friendly for people, since we all think of a movie as... well, a coherent "thing" and not a collection of files. Also, Apple's own DVD Player fully supports the .dvdmedia package, so on Leopard, double-clicking a .dvdmedia will open the movie in DVD Player and begin playing... pretty much what you'd expect to happen.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Thanks for being the alternative to MactheRipper. It may not have as many options as MTR, but at least it works on new DVD releases and I can use other third-party apps to do what I want with the VIDEO_TS files.

For those of you confused by the file RipIt makes, just right-click it and select "Show Package Contents" and it will open the folder revealing the VIDEO_TS files and you can do what you want with those. DVD2OneX2, Toast, and Apple DVD Player can read these files, but I've noticed some other programs cannot.

Anyway... thanks again for continuing to keep this program up to date. FairMount is an alright program but it hangs for all eternity on new DVD releases because FairMount is outdated. This program works flawlessly.

I had an imation floppy drive that can only be used in OS 9, and I had quite a bit of stuff on there I can't get off now... as there are no OS X drivers for the external drive. AIKOUSHA  OS9 isn't the only reason to refuse 10.5. Many "drivers" and applications are broken under Leopard. Not a single one of my CAD programs work, neither do any of my SCSI devices... which cannot be replaced because they simply do not exist outside of this form. It would be easier to buy a windows machine than "move-up" to 10.5.

EASER  What's the size of the file you ripped? What's the capacity of the DVD you're burning it to? I've found that I typically need to also use DVD2one in order to shrink the ripped file to a burnable size. (There are other programs besides DVD2one; that's just the one I use. I'm not attempting to promote.) This is not a limitation of RipIt. Even Mac the Ripper didn't shrink the files. And if you read the RipIt promotional information, it only ever suggests you can rip DVDs in order to view them on your hard drive (such as with DVD Player). That's its intended, stated purpose; so I don't think they're trying to be deceptive about anything. I've found them to be very responsive and straightforward. The end result is that you may need to acquire additional software to accomplish your objectives.

VUDUIMAGING  I ripped about 20 DVDs with RipIt last week on my 15" 2008 MacBook Pro. I ripped another 20 DVDs on my 24" iMac with FastDVDCopy. I found that most of the RipIt VIDEO_TS files had problems (read errors) in Toast 10 whereas the RIPs from FastDVDCopy did not have problems. Tons of wasted time! Now I am ripping the same DVDs all in FastDVDCopy and they are working fine with Toast 10. (And yes I was using the latest 1.2.3 version of RipIt.) FastDVDCopy may be way more expensive but results do matter.

LEOPOLDBLOOM  Funny that you're having so much trouble with RipIt. I know that most of the issues with Toast were supposed to have been fixed. I haven't had any problems with RipIt in quite some time. It rips everything and its output works fine for me in DVD2oneX and HandBrake (usually, though I also use Toast 10 occasionally).

Reviews on FastDVDCopy are very mixed, and it hasn't been updated since Nov. 2007, so, regardless of anything else, I could see it having issues with newer disks--DVD rippers need to be consistently updated in order to keep up with copy protection. Plus it's 100 bucks. Whatever works for you I guess, but I can't see that app being a viable alternative to RipIt for most people, considering the price and its apparent lack of current development.

XENOPHILE  RipIt does not create true Video_TS folders. I don't know the difference, but Toast will not recognize Video_TS folders created by RipIt.

I compared RipIt to MacTheRipper using about a dozen DVDs from my collection. Neither MTR nor RipIt could successfully rip three titles; both MTR and RipIt could rip 8 titles, and only MTR could successfully rip one title. Note that I was using the payware version of MTR.

It's certainly possible that the DVD I could rip with MTR but not RipIt is not representative of the ripper applications capabilities, in other words, RipIt may well be able to rip all but a handful of titles that MTR can rip. Unfortunately, the non-standard Video_TS folders created by RipIt make it unsuitable for backing up a valuable DVD collection. It is also troubling that RipIt has no documentation alerting users to the freak Video_TS folders. After burrowing around RipIt's website, I was able to find a workaround for the freak Video_TS folders (posted by a user), but that is not acceptable for backing up something like the $200 Sopranos DVD box set!

Hopefully RipIt developers will someday offer a full-featured DVD ripping application. For now, RipIt is clearly aimed at laptop users who want to rip DVDs to their HDs to save battery life, NOT at DVD collectors looking for a backup solution.

ROBOTANK  I have to agree with you. The way in which MTR 3 is distributed is a joke. You have to sign up for a forum and jump through a couple hoops just to earn the privilege of giving the dev your money. Once you've managed to "make a gift" (no minimum required amount is provided--you have to guess), you will hopefully receive the app, but you will be pestered for more money, both within the app itself and on the forums. All this for something that's been in beta for years and hasn't seen an update since January 08. I can understand wanting to have a private beta run, but at this point it's just a sham. First of all, it seems to me that any shelter from possible legal issues is rendered moot by the common knowledge of MTR 3's existence and where and how to obtain it. Second, I don't think it's quite right for the developer of a beta app, who doesn't even provide regular updates, to continually demand more money from his customers (and threaten to halt development if he doesn't get it). He could have made a fortune if he had just sold the thing as shareware and held off on all the nonsense. Now RipIt has come along and made it possible to dump MTR altogether. Thank you, RipIt developers, for making this application and for making substantial improvements with each update. Thank you also for distributing it in a reasonable fashion.

RIPIT  Reposted/Updated:

For some, older movies you'll be able to get away with that, but for many modern discs -- "Stranger than Fiction," for example, but there are many, many others -- that approach won't work at all.

You see, the manufacturers have for years been placing blocks of intentionally bad sectors within unused portions of the files, so that naive ripping techniques (like you describe) would hit them as they copy and error out, or best-case, take hours and hours to complete. More recently, with discs like "Leatherheads," there appear to be 40GB of files on the disc. Obviously, this is not actually the case, but the technique you describe would not be able to copy this movie without requiring 40GB on the target disc -- hardly acceptable.

RipIt emulates a DVD player, down to the registers and instructions -- interpreting the movie's program to determine the sections of the files that are legally accessible to a real DVD player, copying blocks instead of playing them. By processing the disc in this way, we are guaranteed to copy everything that is playable and smoothly bypass all of the structural booby traps that are placed there by the DVD manufacturer. On over 35,000 unique discs, RipIt's success rate is better than 99.995%.

RIPIT  This is true. The encryption methods are a constant... otherwise, DVD players out in the field would break. With newer discs, the manufacturers have resorted to building "creatively broken" movies that have intentionally complicated structures, meant to confuse disc processing software.

MSWFUJOWDFFYC  In the plus column...

1. The developers seem highly motivated and passionate about developing this DVD ripping tool. They are vocal about the fact that this app is in its early stages. They have active support forums on their websites and they answer people's questions.

2. They regularly update the program so it will work with the latest copy-protected DVDs.

3. At less than $20, it's reasonably priced.

4. It is able to rip DVDs that are protected by ARccOS and other copy protection schemes.

In the minus column...

1. Even though it's able to rip ARccOS-protected DVDs, and the image of that DVD can live on your hard dive and be viewed with DVD player, etc., it DOES NOT appear to actually REMOVE the ARccOS protection! What does this mean? It means you can't use Toast, or DVD2One, or whatever to burn to a DVD that can be played in a standard player! They say that they are working on this, and that when they get something working, they'll release a free tool to remove ARccOS from rips previously made by RipIt. Until then, however, you're S.O.L. unless you want to use a Windoze machine. One silver lining to this dark cloud... in many cases, Handbrake doesn't seem to blink at these ARccOS protected VIDEO_TS folders and is often able to transcode them to divx, h.264, blah blah blah.

2. This software rips. That's it. It doesn't seem to remove region coding, which really blows. MacTheRipper can do it. It doesn't remove any of the discs protections, like letting you fast forward through FBI warnings, etc. MTR, can do it too. It has almost nothing in the way of features. You put a disc in, and it rips it. Other than decrypting the CSS, it leaves the disc completely untouched.

3. When it rips, it doesn't put a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive. It creates a package with a ".dvdmedia" extension. DVD Player likes it, but most other programs have no idea what to do with it. To get the VIDEO_TS folder, you have to command-click on the file, select "Show package contents" and either move the VIDEO_TS folder out to a regular folder or drag and drop it on an app if it will let you.

Insofar as points 1 and 2, we're working on that... but we want to do it "right." -- MacTheRipper has entirely too many knobs and levers that must be frequently fiddled-with to get the best possible results for a particular movie. This just isn't satisfying to us... we'd prefer something a little more automatic. As for your last point, we've just introduced a new option in our preferences panel that will cause RipIt to output bare-folders.

DAN BUCHAN  Instead of *moving* the VIDEO_TS folder out of the ripped DVD package file, just make an alias of it at the same level of the ripped image.

For example, after I rip a DVD I create a folder with the title of the movie/show/etc. and place the ripped DVD image inside it. Then I control-click (or right-click) on the DVD image file, show package contents, then make an alias of the VIDEO_TS folder at the root level of the folder that contains the DVD image. Then you can drop that onto VLC and it will act just like you have the physical DVD in the drive.

MATT MUSANTE  If you regularly use Toast or Popcorn to burn the movies you'll know that they don't like the .dvdmedia folder. You can just go into RipIt preferences and tell it not to use the .dvdmedia extension and you'll get a disc title - named folder with a VIDEO_TS inside it.

OR

If you're like me and use Mulitplex, you need those .dvdmedia extensions on there. If I'm not going to watch the movie on my mac but I just want to burn in Toast or Popcorn, I just remove the .dvdmedia extension on the folder and that gets me the same thing.

KAPPABEAR  Just downloaded this software, and ripped a couple of movies. I like the interface, and the ease of use of the program. It's a lot less complicated than Mac-The-Ripper, but it's also lacking one feature that I need. That being, the ability to rip, "movie only". I don't want or need all of the trailers, and extras that take up a ton of space. For instance, I just ripped a movie with RipIt that was 6.5 GB, and 3.75 with MTR because I was able to remove all the extras.

I will continue to use MTR, until RipIt has the ability to do "movie only" as I can't afford to sacrifice disk space, needlessly.

RIPIT  We've used 8 and 9, with varying degrees of success. Toast isn't terribly bright, and is easily confused by the (intentionally confusing) advanced structural protections that are encoded into most modern movies. RipIt copies the movie bit-for-bit, so the rule of thumb would be: If Toast (etc.) would have problems with the original, it'll probably have issues with a *very* good copy of that original.

We've open-sourced the portions of RipIt that read and interpret the disc, and we'd be happy to work with the developers of Toast to bring them up to speed with respect to the tricks and traps that are built into modern discs. So far, no takers. :(

MACINTOSH SAUCE  RipIt is the best DVD copying application I have seen yet. The user interface is so simple - something I appreciate a lot.

So far, it is copying everything I have thrown at it. Impressive! After trying it once last night I purchased it right away, and it is worth every penny IMHO.

Remember to only use this to copy DVDs you already OWN. I just want to have a backup of all of them so I can watch them on my Mac Pro or MacBook (getting one soon).

MBHOCKEY  RipIt finally picks up where the ridiculously greedy and selfish MacTheRipper "team" dropped the ball about a year ago. Required "donations", ridiculous hoops to jump through, the way their forums are censored (heaven forbid you critique the Holy Application) are prime examples of the detriment that MTR has become to the Mac community.

RipIt returns to basics. Up front pricing (which is less than half than the required donation for MTR). Simple, intuitive interface. And it works.

Thank you!

PAULNOJUSTPAUL  Holy cow, where did this app come from!?

I usually rip my discs to avoid having to take them along with my laptop when traveling. MacTheRipper had been having more and more problems with current discs, notably Sony BMG releases, for some reason.

RipIt, young though it is, sails right through these troublesome discs giving you a nice DVDplayer file to go with zero hassle. No wonder it has a circular saw as its icon. The disc animation is very cool too!

Also, if the comments section here is anything to go by, the dev seems impressively responsive. Definitely recommend giving this one a good look!

RIPIT  They do some funky stuff these days on the more popular discs.... sprinkling in blocks of intentional bad sectors, among other tricks. If you try to just copy the files from tip-to-tail, you'll run into these dead blocks that an actual DVD player would never encounter -- depending on the software, the disc may take a long time to copy, or just error out. RipIt uses a much more sophisticated approach: It contains a complete DVD player simulator/emulator, running the program embedded on the DVD and copying blocks that would otherwise be played. Since RipIt only processes blocks that are legitimately reachable through the DVD's program, it can identify and easily skip the dead regions of the disc.

This program just functions flawlessly on my iMac 24" and has never let me down. One thing I do which others might not do is to give RipIt enough CPU power when it's running i.e. I don't needlessly launch or quit applications or perform other CPU consuming operations. I admire the developer's initiative in pinpoiting users' problems by asking for their damaged DVDs and even paying for their shipping. This clearly shows the good will they have put into their work to make RipIt a better and more reliable program. I can't say enough how useful this application is to me. At least the RipIt developer(s) ask(s) straight and simple for money. The MTR developer on the other hand asks for "donations".

Now the MTR developer is slightly peed off because there's some fresh competition and he has to look for new means to finance his new Macs.

"...that defects in mastering (that would almost never occur in a retail disc) can and are introduced by buggy or non-compliant mastering software."

Errr...I use the most current version of Toast or sometimes just burn a conversion directly using Visualhub. I don't know what would be non-compliant or buggy about either. Yes there IS the occasionally poor media being written to...I steer clear of junk media. Toast may have had a couple issues back about v6.x or 7.x but it is probably the least buggy best burning software around on any platform. So I think your "special issues" are perhaps some code in your own software that's missing. If other people can do it you sure can.

RIPIT  @SMTIPS: You're right, in that RipIt was designed primarily to shift retail movies that you've purchased to your computer for convenient use/backup there. As such, when a problem occurs, we ask for the barcode so that we can track down another copy of the same movie for our engineers to diagnose and fix the problem.

DVD-R and user-burned media present a special difficulty to us, in that defects in mastering (that would almost never occur in a retail disc) can and are introduced by buggy or non-compliant mastering software. This problem is compounded for us in that it's nearly impossible for us to reproduce (and then fix) problems with home-made DVD-R media because we have no access to the problem disc -- unless you could be convinced to send us one. ;) (We'd more than happily work out the postage, if you'd contact us at support@ripitapp.com)

@PAXTON: The trial-period has been extended to seven days.

@PXL: There *are* discs that MacTheRipper just won't handle, right? ;) ( http://www.ripdifferent.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=40 ) Isn't there room in the toolbox for both RipIt *and* MacTheRipper? (We're big fans, by the way.)

SMTIPS  Okay I tried to rip three of my own burned disks using this. Nothing happened. I got a small screen that asked me to submit the barcode, evidently from the retail package of the DVD. I don't have one.

Therefore I must conclude that this app only works on retail-branded DVD's and not any other kind, ie, burned copies of a TS folder.

The only option in the program is where to set the rip-to folder.

Keep working on it guys, it seems simple and elegant but it's going to have to work on almost any DVD I put in not just the 2500+ retail titles you tested so far. Main title, all titles etc are some features that would be commonly chosen with a ripper app. Obviously this just doesn't recognize a *DVD* it recognizes a DVD original copy only with barcoding encoded into it.

Unfortunately this is far from ready for primetime, I'm a Mac user who just wants an app to WORK when I get it. And I certainly don't want to go look at a lengthy list to find out if a DVD I want to back up is on your list of "checked" disks that your app will work with. And I certainly don't want to do trial and error when there are apps that I KNOW work with any disk I plug in.

And I think you're opening yourself up to TROUBLE by listing specific DVD names on a public website like this or your own that your program has been tested to rip.

And you actually think people will give you MONEY for this? :)

PEACHTREECITY  There is a trial version available. Additionally, I contacted support/info and they answered all of my questions very quickly and adequately. I'm going to be purchasing this application shortly.

MACSOLU  I choose the "PreferencesÂ…" menu item and get a dialog box that takes me to my Movies folder, as if expecting me to open a file. Seems like an obvious bug.

FARIBORZ  I bought this software after ripping several films with it. I found it very simple to use, efficient and very fast. I know there are free software out there that do the same thing but none of the them has the simplicity and the speed of RipIt. I also found RipIt very stable which means it never crashed under any circumstances. Thanks. Fariborz AMIRSHAHI - Verona (Italy)

CHRISTOPHE DUCOMMUN  Rip DVD but bot not all protection like RipGuard and Arcoos. Have bought a licence because have ripped a DVD which MacTheRipper failed.

The resulting DVD can be obtained by opening the .dvd hidden folder then move the VIDEO_TS folder in another folder.

DENIS BEAUCHEMIN  I did the same thing. Bought it after the trial version ripped a DVD that I couldn't rip with anything else. Subsequently I ripped 2 more DVD's that I couldn't rip other wise. I f you control click the media file the video_TS file will show up which you can manipulate.

SPECTRAL7  Really in this day and age i would suggest using Handbrake to convert your DVDs to high quality MP4s. I end up with a 1024 by 576 high quality video which i can carry on the road and playback without need for disk. It also is good enough quality for me to act as a backup for my films....kids have a tendency to destroy cd/dvds

GDUMAN  In the next version of Handbreak the developers have removed the software's ability to rip the DVD. To continue with part of HB's functionality required the installation of VCL. Which I have for Fairmount.

XENOPHILE  Developer site offers little detail of features, no support documentation, and a cryptic feedback section that doesn't answer any questions.

Presumably this app rips a decrypted copy of a DVD onto one's HD. Ok, but does it handle any of the latest copy protection schemes? I tried using MacTheRipper to rip a DVD that I own so I could play it back from my HD when on trips, etc. But the rip was no good, apparently due to dummy VOB files or something. RipIt's developer offers no indication of whether it will work on such DVDs.

If RipIt were freeware, I'd discern its features via trial and error and be grateful for it. I expect a bit more from Shareware.

EVERLAST_34  Not a bad app. Generaly speaking, it does what it says it will do; get movies from DVD to your mac. The main downfall is the resulting format. The file is trapped as a .dvd file that can only be played in Apple's DVD player. Fine, except for the fact that these files end up being huge! 7GB for one movie? No thanks...

MRELCEE  Pardon me, but "duh"

You are ripping a DVD, and storing it on the hard drive. DVD images files are what we call "large".

Nowhere does it say it is converting to another format.

This app does what it says - and it is indeed true that playing a movie from the hard drive takes less power than spinning the optical drive.

RIPIT  .dvdmedia "files" are actually just folders that OSX treats specially. If you "ctrl-click" on one, and select "Show Package Contents" you'll see that all of the files from the DVD are there, as you'd expect. As such, .dvdmedia are completely compatible with PCs running Linux or Windows.

RIPIT  We have a new feedback forum at http://feedback.ripitapp.com -- If you find that you're having problems with RipIt (a disc that won't rip, etc.) then *please* report it. We'd love an opportunity to diagnose/fix your problem, and make our product better in the process.

TIP: When reporting a problem disc, remember to include both the Title and the UPC code (the number under the bar-code on the box.)

UMIJIN  Thought I'd give it a try, but regretted it. The app boots up and asks for a DVD if you don't have one inserted. Upon insert, the dvd name and size appears, then we get a spinning ball forever. You can't switch to a different app, switch to the finder, or even navigate to 'force quit'. Had to totally reboot my iMac.

I tried it twice with the same result.

Into the trash it goes!

RIPIT  Would you mind telling us what the Title and UPC code (the number under the bar-code on the box) is?

TIAGO  Handbreak has a different purpose...

RipIt would be the software you use to get the content of the optical media (DVDs) on your hard drive... Only after the content is on your hard drive and "open" (ripped), Handbrake would be used to create a video file (.avi, .mkv, mp4) that can be played via VLC, Quicktime, iTunes, etc...

DENIS BEAUCHEMIN  I was very surprised that this app worked on the very first try with no errors. Preferences need to be enabled to save file in any location. The file type kind of confused me (DVDmedia VS Video_TS) but it is recognized by apple's DVD player and Toast Titanium. Keep up the good work.

RIPIT  .dvdmedia "files" are really special folders defined by Apple's DVD player. A clever trick, really, to make messy VIDEO_TS folders easier to play on the Mac. Right-click on one, and pick "Show Package Contents..." and you'll see exactly what I mean.
