I would love if it could update itself with less work, like Cyberduck does for example, rather than having to visit this site, download, reinstall etc.

FRANKOF  I like Glims ever since I use it. First, for the features it implements, second for the possibility to leave behind Saft and its greedy, arrogant and unresponsive developer.

Having said this, I would like to point put a bug - that is downloading into dated folders. For many downloads (such as pdfs shown in Safari, and downloaded by clicking the "download" button) this does not work, the files simply do not go into this folder.

Anyway, great work guy! Thanks a lot!

ORION MK. V  A bevy of features for zero buckaroonies and most of the time stable -- depends on the build of Safari. Though they exist in a few other Safari plugs, dated downloads, full/max screen viewing and search engine enhancements are my favs.

PROGRAMHAPPY  Developer, I have a HUGE feature request that I think will be quite helpful to many users. There is (was) an add-on called "Twicetab" (see "Twicetab 1.3.1.1" here at macupdate), but it doesn't work on Safari 4. One of the optional features of TwiceTab that I desperately miss is the ability to make a URL (or domain name) in my clipboard open in a new tab. For instance, if I copy the text "http://www.google.com" or "google.com" and then double-click on an empty space in the Bookmarks Bar, it will open the Google home page in that new tab. However, if there is no URL or domain name at the top of my clipboard, the double-click action in the Bookmarks Bar will perform the user's default preference (home page, blank window, etc.) for a new tab. Whadaya say, guys? Hook us up!

Thanks in advance!

MACHANGOUT  Problem fixed. Sorry for the confusion. In order to work on Snow Leopard, Glims has to be an OSAXen plugin, aka Script Addition, which behaves a little differently from Input Managers, we fixed the uninstaller accordingly. Also it would be nice if you could contact us through the report form on our site, we really would like to get feedback on our software, and know what you think we should improve for future versions (beside the uninstaller).

DRDUL  I'ma long-time Saft user, but didn't want to buy another licence just to upgrade to a 32-bit Snow Leopard version, so I gave Glims version 1 beta 21 a try, and discovered that it's great! All the features of Saft that I need (keywords in the address bar, bookmark separators, force new windows to open as tabs, auto-close of the damn download window), plus much better search features. And all this in a 64-bit version. I am a happy guy!

DRDUL  I just switched to Glims from Saft, and IMO it's a significant improvement. The keywords in the address bar are intended for searches, but you can set up additional web sites without the query in the URL if you just want to go to a particular website without searching. I really like the keyboard shortcuts for selecting a search engine in the search box.

DROOPYSIGNAL  I had ditched Firefox because it was so darn slow and unstable on SL. Tried Opera and I love it and its features that rival some of FF's best add-ons, but I felt Safari was just better, visually and stable. The latest release of Glims, as of this review, appears stable and most, if not all, the features work. I'm so happy with focus on last tab and open all tabs from previous session. Haven't had a crash or a glitch yet. Still, would like to see improvements as they come like the ability...never mind! You can close another tab without losing focus on the current one! Thanks for Glims and and I feel guilty and irritated I invested in Saft, which is only 32 bit and the developer asks for a purchased upgrade, even though I have purchased two upgrades from Tiger to Leopard and and another Leopard license.

DOOBIEXX  Soooooo you recommend what alternative(s)? Or are there none in your opinion. When I read something like this, I ask myself what other apps you are using instead and why none are mentioned... Whenever I read a straight shot at the app, no suggestions just jabs it makes me question the validity of the review. Competitor? Disgruntled friend? That's why this site exists, so we can trade info/compare our feelings about apps. You just said no, offering us no other alternative and the review/comment is, well, useless to us. Thanks for your opinion but what app(s) is/are not as intrusive? I appreciate the post and look forward to a response so I can try one of your "picks" out. Thanks.

TWISTED  Well :) Invasive means also put "About Glims" under the "About Safari" menu.

Under the hood it means that it was not easy to understand in which case it was interfering with my browsing or not. Too much firefox-style features. If there's no better alternative, it's better no alternative at all. I was searching for an alternative to Inquisitor (there's a bad bug there with Safari 4.0.3): people seemed very enthusiast with Glim; after a try it recalled me my stressful win+firefox experience: the extensions hell! :)

I think the developer should take care about the ease of use and the interface, at least following the last guidelines.

At the end I found with SafariTabs + Inquisitor a better alternative... Keep Safari as-is and you'll be happy!

Hope i answered your questions :)

TRONDAH  To doobiexx: Are you saying that because there aren't any alternatives, we can't criticise the product? Doesn't sound right to me. The reviewer's remark were spot on if you ask me. Bad interface, too invasive, breaks easily.

WHITEMERE  Yeah what Trondah said.

As it happens I think Glims is pretty stable myself and is the best out of all the Safari add-ons I've used over the last few years (thinking saft / safari stand etc.) although they all tend to do slightly different things.

But having a go at someone for posting fairly innouous negative feedback is ridiculous. So anyone not posting a glowing comment, or who fails to namecheck a variety of other products when they may not exist anyway, is supposed to keep quiet or be thought of as a competitor or, what was that, a 'disgruntled friend'?

In my experience the underhanded competitor types are more likely to mention their own product anyway and troll the boards looking for similar products before slagging them off and hyping up their own.

POIKKEUS  Glims 1.b20 was written specifically to negotiate problems with the latest Safari update. However, it seems that the latest Glims will not allow me to recover any of my old features, like Thumbnails and Search. When I search under Safari/Preferences, Glims is no longer listed. Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to have no effect. Perhaps a future update will solve this problem.

BAPAWN  I'm pretty happy with this application, but I mainly use it as a substitute for the sadly defunct AcidSearch. I don't quite understand yet why the devs haven't added the ability to scroll through search engines using some form of keyboard commands, and why the search engine doesn't default back to an assigned default after a custom search. Not a huge fan of Inquisitor, but I'm using it just for those features and will happily ditch it and update to Safari 4.0.3 once Glims adds this feature. Is this just not a feature that's high on other folks' lists, or is there a way to do this already that I'm missing? Once again, kudos to machangout. I appreciate their work.

RICHARD TAYTOR  Documentation states:

Re-opens last session when Safari starts

but that is misleading because Glims does *not* restore the history for each tab (i.e., any back/forward branches are lost). Saft properly restores session state, and I hope Glims implements this essential feature soon.

MEEGO  Glims is an input manager, a hack, because Apple won't create an official plugin system for Safari. And if you spend enough time browsing you'll notice issues. I don't know if it's Apple's or Glims' fault but it doesn't matter. Safari crashes more with Glims installed. It does not crash all the time, but it does crash noticeably more often, no matter how hard its makers work to make their software stable. In my experience with Glims, whenever i had more than 6/8 tabs open, after a long browsing session, i would expect the occasional crash, in which case it would usually also forget the last minutes of my browsing history. Bad, bad, bad..

I have loved and used Glims for months. I always took the time to wait for a Glims update before applying a Safari update, in order to avoid situations such as the one that arose with the 4.0.3 Safari update. But I have stopped using it and wouldn't recommend it now.

That said, Glims is the best plugin for Safari currently available IMO. It's just not good enough.

CHIN  Fine piece of software ... I use it daily.

Unfortunately there might be a problem with Safari 4.0.3 under MacOS/X 10.4.11 for Intel (with installed SecUpd2009-003). Safari will crash right at startup. If I remove the folder /Library/InputManagers/Glims then Safari will startup and work properly.

However, this problem doesn't seem to occur if running Safari 4.0.3 under MacOS/X 10.5.8 ...

STEVEN GOODHEART  If you mean one can no longer choose the Search Engine you specified in the Glims Search Engine preferences, yes, I have the same problem too.

By the way, I found with this version of Glims that Safari uses whatever is at the top of the Glims search engine list -- found that out after moving Wikipedia to the top of the Glims search list, and then quitting Safari. When I came back, all the searches I did in Safari's toolbar were all for Wikipedia..the only way I could change it back to Google was to move Google search back to the top of the Glims search list, and then restart. I hope this gets fixed soon -- and that it's fixable. It's great being able to specify the search engine one wants to use.

ASMEURER  This seems to have fixed the issue where it would not reload my tabs unless I opened a link from another application. My only complaint now regards search shortcut keys. I would like it if they could be activated anywhere, not just when you are in the search box. Also, when changing the search site when text is in the box, I would like it if it just changed the site and didn't open a search in a new window. (This is similar to how Acid Search worked back when it worked). That way, if I start typing a search and realize it is in the wrong engine, I don't have to cut the search, change the engine, and paste it back in just to get it in that tab.

Also, this doesn't really matter, but technically, the options in New Tabs should be a group of radio buttons that are disabled by a checkbox. See http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/AppleHIGuidelines/XHIGControls/XHIGControls.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30000359-SW4

DANA SUTTON  When you launch the installer on this version, you get a screen which says, in part, "When you use our plugin and click on an Amazon or eBay result that we formatted, you support our project. Amazon and eBay gives us a small percentage in referral fees on all qualifying revenue made through their links. Please note that this only happens on our formatted links. Other websites or links are not reformatted. Also your privacy is protected through Amazon's privacy policy. In other words what happens on Amazon stays in Amazon." I'm not so sure I care for this. What exactly is "an Amazon or eBay link that we formatted?" How can I tell when I'm looking at one? For some time, I have been using Glims, but having read this I de-installed the version I've been running, and I'm certainly not going to install this one.

MISHA  This just means that they modify the link to include their affiliate tracking ID. Nothing else is affected -- the link still points you to where you wanted to go, it's just that the Glims team will earn a small % if you buy the item.

Totally harmless, I assure you. It's just a way for them to earn a bit of money for their efforts on the free software.

DANA SUTTON  Sorry, I hear you but I still don't buy it. I think it's that I don't like the idea of the technology they're using, even if they are using it for a completely benign purpose. Dammit, I don't want the links I click on to be altered in any way. Even if what they do is quite okay and understandable, the next guy to use the same link-modification might do it for a much more sinister purpose, and i. m. h. o. it ought to be against the law If they simply asked me for a few bucks, I'd happily pay to use it, it's a good product. Or, if they insist on making their money this way, I think it would be more ethical for them to include some sort of opt-out choice, so that people share my view could continue to use GLIMS in a totally worry-free way.

MISHA  I understand your point... although gor all you know, other Safari enhancers you've used in the past were hijacking your links and just not disclosing it (obviously you never noticed Glims was doing this until you read the Read Me)... you never know.

I think the Glims guys are pretty stand-up folks, actively developing the best Safari enhancer and always keeping it free. I guess the middle ground would be for them to charge $10 for a version that doesn't do that.

DANA SUTTON  Thanks, Misha. I want to be absolutely clear about what I'm saying. I have absoluteliy nothing against Glims or MacHangout, its developer, and I admire their up-front honesty about what they're doing. My objection is, in a nutshell, that a technology that allows third parties to alter the links I click on, in the wrong hands, seems to have the potential of being employed as a new kind of Trojan Horse. I believe I have the right to experct that the links I click on to function precisely as intended by the site developer.

I think you're only partly clear on what Glims is doing, regarding this "redirection" of links. It's not a redirection as such, and it's done in collaboration between the Glims authors, and Amazon, etc., so those links ARE working just as the site owners intend. But I do agree with you, that the Glims authors possibly should include an option in Glims to allow you to turn off this feature, for people with personal concerns like yours.

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  Unlike the earlier commenter, I'm not worried about Glims being malware, but its auto-affiliation feature caused me to uninstall too. I belong to some loyalty rewards programs that put money into a college savings account or give other rewards on purchases made through certain links from the websites. AFAIK, only one affiliate can receive the commission. I uninstalled Glims to be on the safe side, because putting every penny I can into my child's college fund is very important to me.

I like Glims, especially the way it reloads my last session in a snap. Safari is very slow at reloading without Glims. If the developer is reading, I'd be very happy to pay for a version of Glims that does not insert your affiliate ID, as Misha suggests above. Glims is certainly worth paying for, and I hope you consider Misha's idea. Thank you for your time.

FLASH1296  I really think that GLIMS is the best Safari plugin extant.

I used the Apple Uninstaller - which automatically re-installs whatever version of Safari preceded the one being replaced.

Then I reinstalled GLIMS and have used it for much of a day without problems and through a few restarts and two reboots.

So, for those who wish to check THEIR version number:

LEOPOLDBLOOM  I agree that ad-blocking is an essential feature for any browser, but I find most of the ad-blocking plugins for Safari either a little unstable (i.e. SafariBlock, Safari Adblock) or not frequently updated (i.e. PithHelmet). If you like Glims better than Saft, try using GlimmerBlocker for ad-blocking. It's a proxy so doesn't need to be updated every time Safari is and doesn't cause stability issues. I guess if you want ad-blocking in the same package, Saft still has the edge, but Glims has the advantage of not requiring a silly update process every time there's a new release, and adding GlimmerBlocker will give you the essential ad-blocking functionality without having to install another InputManagers hack. As a side note, I also suggest the Click-to-Flash WebKit plugin for Flash blocking if you're into that. Again, since it's not a hack, it doesn't threaten Safari's stability.

MDOGNRDOG  It's definitely an improvement over Saft. The fit-n-finish is better, and the feature set incorporates some of Inquisitor's cool features.

I was stoked to see it allows you to set "grouped" tabs to appear directly to the right of the selected tab. But it doesn't behave the way Tabs Open Relative (the Firefox extension) does it, so Glims still isn't the ultimate browser. But in conjunction with Safari 4, Glims is still very cool.

LEOPOLDBLOOM  This is an excellent plugin that has made Saft completely redundant. It brings essential features to Safari, especially single-window mode, session saving, and enhanced searching, at no cost and with very active development. The work by the Glims developers in regards to the Safari 4 beta was, in my opinion, beyond reproach. Basic compatibility was achieved the same day and the more troublesome features were fully functional within a week. There are paid plugins that make you wait longer than this (especially PithHelmet). Glims is also very stable for an InputManagers plugin.

I combine Glims with GlimmerBlocker and Click-to-Flash to round out my Safari browsing experience.

SESQUIPEDALIAN  Simply wonderful. It does everything I want in terms of adding functionality to Safari, for free, and with style.

Plus, it is very actively developed, and the developers are quick to respond to, say, unexpected actions from Apple that break stuff.

If there were a way to integrate the search engine selection/recent searches and the search suggestions/top hits all into one dropdown instead of two, it might make ease of use go from 4 stars to 5 stars, but even as it is now it is still quite easy to use.

Coupled with the free Safari Adblock plugin, Glims makes Safari my favourite browsing experience, full stop.

It seems a little strange that this small detail either wasn't noticed by, or pointed out by, the developers. I've installed b13 on two machines, one tiger and one leopard, and neither work.

Anyway, here's hoping that they will fix it soon, cuz we all really miss it. This new Safari seems pretty nice and fast to me, but it sure is bland w/o favicons and choices of search engines, and all the other cool things Glims did to perk it up.

And there's a donation waiting for them as soon as they incorporate a "search this site" function among their stock engines.

DORKYPANTS  Tiger (10.4.11 with all Apple Software Updates installed) on 1st gen. MacBook, Safari 3.2.1 - I was mostly interested in Glims' ability to make new tabs open adjacent to the current tab. After installation, weird things started happening:

- with lots of tabs open, some tabs would go blank in the tab bar when I picked a tab towards the right of the tab bar. Picking the leftmost tab would usually correct it.

- with lots of tabs open, clicking on an embedded YouTube video's icon to open it in a new tab worked, but after starting the video I closed the tab it was in, and its soundtrack kept playing!

- with lots of tabs open, couldn't drag-and-drop the URL from the address bar onto a FInder folder.

I rate Glims not ready for prime time.

If it matters, I have SafariStand 3.1T162, SafariPlus 1.6a1, SafariBlock 2.2 and Cooliris 1.9.1.17582 installed. They've been playing nice with each other.

BILLINDG  Glim 1.0b11 finally brings tab management in Safari to a level that is competitive with Firefox and TabMixPlus. You can still only undo the most recent closed tab, but that is good enough in most cases. I still like the way Firefox renders some pages better than Safari, but between Safari's generally greater speed and Glims, I am thinking about switching.

ASMEURER  Although Glims is still in an infant stage and has some issues, I highly recommend it for one reason: the developers are highly responsive to bug reports and suggestions. If there is something that doesn't work correctly or something that you would like added, just head over to their website and leave them a note on the feedback page. They are a little slow in integrating new suggestions, as they are receiving plenty of them, but they promise to respond to every single request.

RORO01  First of all, many thanks to the developers for this piece of software. I've found two problems:

1. Re: "Added: in bookmark bar - Action to add bookmark/folder here" - it adds the bookmark/folder even if you click on Cancel.

2. If you choose "Full Screen" you can then choose "Normal Screen" but if you choose "Max Window Size" you cannot later choose "Normal Window Size"

THEBRIX2008  Great plugin - auto-close of the Download window (why Apple has left it hanging around after a download has completed, release after release, is beyond me), navigating through tabs with single keys, a single key to undo the last closed tab, and another one to maximise the window (full desktop) are winners on their own.

Then the search additions steal Inquisitor's thunder - they are similar, but simply better. Less attractive visually maybe, but slicker, and more results can be shown in the dropdown from the search box.

Other features such as the thumbnails added on Google and Yahoo! search results, and the full screen (rather than full desktop) option, are less useful to me personally, but others will differ.

The authors describe themselves as "a group of kids having fun so please don't take us too seriously." This is unduly modest - Saft and SafariStand have been the "gold standard" of such plugins for a long time and now they just look old, with too many redundant or trivial options.

Finally I don't have to have an empty window with no active/useful info in it hanging about on my screen. GARY W.  This is a very useful utility, which I installed mainly because I got tired of dealing with Acidsearch (author has not updated to a stable version for use with Safari 3.0) crashing Safari periodically. The only thing missing (with Glims) was the ability to add custom search engines, which has now been addressed. Thank You! It's also nice to have icons in the tabs, making it easy to pick them out when going back and forth.

The only thing I'm still missing is a "search this site" item, which Acidsearch and some other browsers have built in/included.

I tried pasting in the string from Acidsearch after temporarily reinstalling it, but can't seem to get it to work in Glims. Anyone out there know how to do this? Glims guys?

Thanks again, very useful and much appreciated utility.

RANDYHARRIS  With version 1.0b6 Glims is now full featured enough that I'm ditching Saft.

Both sport:

- Undo closed tab with Ctrl Z

- Restore Safari with tabs from last session

- Type Ahead (search by just typing your search string) and Glims does it far more elegantly than does Saft

- auto close or supress the downloads window

Additionally, Glims does (my apologies if I don't realize that Saft does these things.)

- thumbnail pictures to accompany Yahoo and Google searches

- Inquisitor style searches from the search bar

- favicons on the search bar

- favicons show up on tabs

Saft does have these features that are not in Glims at this time, you'll have to decide if they're worth the price of Saft compared to free Glims which is adding features quickly.

- autocomplete, the ability to store and recall your logon info for secure sites that ask a browser to not store it.

- Kiosk (I'd never use this)

- Ad blocking (why, Safari AdBlock is free and great)

- quick search abilities (I prefer Launchbar for these)

- Tab handling, some features about tabs are more full featured in Saft.

GRR74  I tried Glims and ended up breaking Safari. I am running Safari with Saft and Inquisitor. After installing Glims, Safari used 100% of the CPU. Now having unistalled Glims, Safari still pushes the CPU to 100%. Also I should point out that Glims also installs itself in ~/Library/Application Support as well as in the root folders. I don't know what changes of made, but something went wrong. Backing up from

GRR74  I am sorry if I sounded harsh, but I installed Glins for the preview effect of google searches. Then upon restarting the mac and launching Safari, the CPU went to 100% and syslog also flared up. I have not installed any other software for a long time.

I run 10.5.4 with the latest version of Safari. I also have Saft, inquisitor, adblock (don't remember the name as time machine is still ticking away), speed download and 1Password (both of which I guess also integrate with safari).

This being the case with me being the only one, I guess that is good news. The app looked like something I would have wanted.

Reason for me restoring now is that the CPU did not drop down to normal even after removing Glims when running safari.
