DONG-YOUNG After trying several popular video players, I personally found Movist to be the best. VLC had crash problems, Mplayer sometimes had "squeaky" audio, and Quicktime had quite a number of minor annoying problems. I'd say Movist is perfect so far except for one problem. From time to time I experience choppy audio even though the video remains, particularly with MKV files. (Version 0.6.6)

MAGENTIS + Speedy seeking and skipping + Very pleasing to the eye (especially with the BlackMod) + Subtitles are recognized painlessly and are easily adjustable + Stable (memory leak seems fixed with 0.6.5) - Wonky with some vob files and does not recognize vobsubs yet - No option to set a default width to stretch to - Moderate CPU (The latest VLC uses more on average. Mplayer less) - Video equalizer settings reset when quit - Playback speed adjustment works only some of the time - When repeating a movie that's been stretched it defaults back to the original resolution Most of my negatives are minor (except the first). Movist has a great feel and I've come to prefer it over VLC and MplayerExtended. (Version 0.6.4)

BLABLABLA@DODGIT.COM I was fearing they stopped developing. But as I seen at the project-page, they did some work @ Sep 06: dx/sub subtitle display fixed. Still no download available, but it looks good. I hope they will make the source-code also snow-leopard compatible. Cheers! BTW: Movist uses more CPU than every other player, but it's also very fast and responsive (which comes with a price). (Version 0.6.4)

NYMPHE I don't understand why they don't release a point version like 0.6.5 to rescue us, Snow Leopard users, from the huge memory leak. If I want to watch a movie of more than 1 GB, I have to stop in the middle of the movie, quit Movist, and then re-open it. Are there any nightly builds for Movist? Or can someone build it from the available code? Because I can't. :) Just this review can show how good Movist is. I simply don't want to go back to VLC or MPlayer Extended. (Version 0.6.4)

DR. GIRLFRIEND Movist is usually pretty damn awesome, but this update is bad news on Snow Leopard. There's a huuuge memory leak -- it gobbles up over 2GB of RAM playing a simple .avi file on my system. Stay far away if you're on Snow Leopard. Use VLC until this issue gets fixed. (Version 0.6.4)

NYMPHE Unfortunately it is quite bad. If you pause the movie, you'll see everything lags at the system. I am sure it is easy to fix, and hopefully they update it soon, because Movist is really very good movie player. AIKOUSHA Can't review it. On launch it says it goes looking for updates (where there's no internet connection?!?), it beachballs for about a minute and then crashes. Repeatedly. Unable to truly startup. It doesn't even draw it's menubar. Guess I'm still stuck with a horribly buggy VLC (which now crashes if you click in the playlist ^_^). (Version 0.6.4)

EXORZIST It's a nice application to play movies. It's very fast and responsive. I tested it with various files. It also has a "Desktop Background" feature, but the icons on the desktop are un-clickable, so it's not so much fun to use it while working. I hope that will change. You can also setup the fullscreen-transition, so it can go instantly-, fade- or zoom- into fullscreen. One feature I would really like to see is a "fullscreen-movie-wall" function, which would play 1...16 or more movies at once. This could provide some very artistic possibilities. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no other player out with a feature like that, not even a commercial one(?). Killer-app-potential? (Version 0.6.4)

RADIORHAEEM Looking forward to trying this out but the first thing I noticed is the app's icon. This is a straight rip off of MacRabbit's VLC Makeover Icon Kit available here: http://macrabbit.com/goodies/ If you zoom in on the icon for Movist you will even see the small "VLC" in the metal-ish border of the icon at bottom center. Get your own icon! (Version 0.6.4)

CINDI168 This is a great piece of software, it's much faster than vlc and the interface is much sleeker. However, I just updated to 0.6.2 and i was watching a xvid .avi file and the sound was choppy but the video was fine; i then used vlc to play the file and it played just fine. I wondered if the issue was only present in 0.6.2, so i reverted bak to 0.6.1 and the problem was gone. (Version 0.6.2)

XENOPHILE Great video player! I have a request for rare feature that I find indispensable: permit full screen playback at any size. I often want to view low quality clips fullscreen so they aren't surrounded by OS X background stuff, but most players insist on stretching to fit in fullscreen mode. I've tried quite a few players, but to my knowledge only Quicktime has the option to view clips fullscreen at any magnification (unfortunately Quicktime cannot resize in fullscreen, for example from 1x size to 2x size, which would be convenient for low resolution clips). Add this one feature and Movist becomes my default player. If I wasn't so picky it already would be - this is a very well designed video player, all the more impressive for such an early version. FORMICA WOW! Movist is MUCH better than QuickTime Player. It's way more customizable: play speed can be adjusted from half speed all the way up to triple time, you can set a range within a movie's duration to loop, it will play partially downloaded movies, it's subtitling features are super customizable, and a whole bunch more. I'm changing the MIME type settings on my Mac so everything that would normally play with QuickTime now plays with Movist! And it's FREE!!!! Seriously, it's much, much better than any other movie player I've tried, including MPlayer OSX Extended, VLC, QT, Chroma, QTAmateur and NicePlayer. Kudos to the developers! (Version 0.6.1)

NICHOLAS RILEY Very nicely done - a good mix between MPlayer's keyboard friendliness and being a real Mac application. The ability to switch between FFmpeg and QuickTime decoding without losing your place in the video is especially appreciated. Only feature I really miss from MPlayer is the ability to play partially downloaded videos. Given how well Movist keeps your place in a video already, it seems it should be trivial to simply reload a video when you get to the end of it, rather than terminating playback. (Version 0.6.1)

BCWINTERS Plays Windows Media files with no stuttering, delays or frame drops on my PowerBook, unlike recent versions of VLC or Flip4Mac! FLV playback is also much cleaner than in VLC, and with less CPU spiking. For the moment, VLC will probably remain my "Swiss army knife" of video players but Movist is turning out to be a great supplemental player. Some issues I have with Movist so far: the player controls are a bit large/intrusive when you want to have a floating video window while working on other things; there are no cropping settings (not that those work right in recent versions of VLC anyway); there's no way to disable on-screen display. It's also crashed once or twice on me when changing a lot of settings quickly while a video is playing (easy enough to avoid--in normal playback it's been crash free). Those are minor issues and I hope this program continues to be developed. (Version 0.51)

DIGITAL FURY Looked good at first, but unfortunately Movist is another app that can't play .mkv files correctly - so showstopper for me right there. Also the audio is either scrambled or the stereo is broken and/or plays only in one channel. Furthermore the product doesn't seemed to be developed anymore, as it has not been updated for over eight months. (Version 0.51)

DREAMKATCHA I've only just discovered Movist, but I'm definitely considering making it my default video player. All the issues I had with VLC are solved: - It remembers your playback position (bookmark support in VLC is non-existent despite the option being there for window dressing) - You can sync the volume to that of your system's main volume level, which saves a lot of hassle when you often switch between headphones and speakers - Less cluttered, more intuitive Mac-like interface - The Apple remote behaviour is more logical i.e. clicking left or right to jump x seconds forwards or backwards rather than holding the buttons down, which can result in accidentally skipping to the next video. - Essential options such as video stretching aren't buried away in the most obscure sub-menus. The only glitch I've found is that when you skip backwards, the audio stalls momentarily. Strangely enough it kicks in immediately when you skip forwards. One option that might need a bit more explanation is 'under scanning'. What does that do? Other than that I'm extremely impressed and am looking forward to the next update. (Version 0.51)

BRETTD This appears to be a modern version of mplayer, which is nice, since the official port is ancient abandonware (and sucks- half the keyboard commands do nothing, especially the sync-related ones.) Unfortunately, Movist doesn't handle OGM file subtitles; it handles the audio track just fine, but not the subtitles...and given that there are a dozen bugs and none of them have been touched or acknowledged since May, this seems like it's headed down the abandonware road as well. HALOPEND Wow, this program is next to perfect. It has all the playback capabilities of VLC, has a fullscreen mode similar to front row, aesthetically best vlc and when an optical cable is connected, automatically adjust time computer to make sure a raw digital signal can pass through. It even has support the the apple remote built in making it a near perfect replacement to all movie players on the mac. Problems it faces are that the front row like interface doesn't include transitions and has unnecessary "loading with quicktime" messages. There are some .mov's I have which will crash the program without fail. Overall, a very good program that just needs some touching up. (Version 0.51)
