DONPERREAULT  Where are the updates? None of his app's been updated lately, yFlicks? Discouraging for a developer with such great potential.

SILENT BOB IE  I agree. Bought this app just before 1.1.4. It was being updated quite frequently before this and thought that trend would continue. I am very dissapointed.

The developer site hasn't been upgraded and the forums seem to have been close a couple of months ago.

At least one of the developers seems to have moved off to different projects with a different developer.

I for one will certainly not be purchasing from this developer again.

ROBOTANK  Leech is nice and lightweight and has a lovely, minimal interface. Though it's not as versatile as SpeedDownload, I tend to prefer it for the simple reason that it works properly with OmniWeb. SpeedDownload integration with OmniWeb has caused problems as far back as I can remember, while Leech is fully compatible. Also, Leech properly handles certain files from authenticated web sites (namely, my university's Blackboard site) that SD had problems with. On the other hand, SD does seem to generally achieve better speeds than Leech, so I still use it manually to download large files. IMO, both apps offer substantial advantages over any browser's built-in download window.

BENR  I wish it could replace Speed Download, but so far it just can't. My specific irritation is the lack of a bandwidth throttle. SD lets me keep browsing while downloading by reducing its download speed, Leech just sucks it all up!

TIAGO  I would love to say that it "just works", but the truth is that when it works it offers no advantages to Safari's built-in downloader... I honestly cannot remember if Leech was EVER able to successfully resume a paused download...

Most (all?) of the time I have to browse to Leech's history and download again an in several times that doesn't work either, so I have to go to the webpages again (which were already closed, obviously) to get the files...

If your connection drops mid-download, be ready to loose everything you had already downloaded...

etc etc...

I love Leech's interface (LOVE IT!), but owning both Leech and SpeedDownload I have to say that SpeedDownload is way faster, it successfully pauses/resumes downloads, it successfully re-downloads, has a better history browse... etc... But I hate its interface and could never get used to it... I'll try the lite version, but I already know that its interface is no match for Leech's... Let's see...

BENR  I've now found that by hiding the toolbar and the sidebar, switching into "simple" mode, showing only the Name, Status, Est.Time, Speed and Size columns and doing all my file management with right/ctrl-clicks on the downloads window, Speed Download does for me what I wish Leech would.

JAMSOFT  Leech is a great little app – It's lightweight, fast, stable, and most importantly it just works.

I've repeatedly tried other download managers in the past (Speed download, iGetter, Download Wizard, etc.) and I always found myself uninstalling them because their 'cons' far outweighed any 'pros'. They were everything I didn't want in a download manager: overly complex, clunky, intrusive, required excess system resources, and they were unstable to the point that it even caused other applications to crash.

Pros:

- Lightweight & fast

— Stable

- Automatically integrates with Safari/Firefox's cookies, authenticated sessions, and stored passwords. In other words, downloading files from a website that you're a member of (i.e. a premium RapidShare account) automatically works without you having to mess around with setting up or configuring any tedious rules.

- Plenty of user controllable features & settings (i.e. automatically resize download window, private downloading, user definable rules, etc.)

- It just works.

Cons:

- Doesn't seem to properly work on a couple sites.

— Could use a few more features.

Suggestions:

– It'd be nice if Leech would preserve the "Where from:" URL like Safari does when you download a file. (You can view it in the Finder's "Get Info" window under the "More Info:" tab.)

– Leech (or any download manager for that matter) can always be optimized even further. It'd be great if Leech honed in on maximizing your download speed.

Conclusion:

If you download files on a regular basis (whether it's apps, music, movies, or anything else) I highly recommend you give Leech a try!

LEO SPILL  I purchased Leech and while not perfect does bridge a gap between bloated software and Apples own inept download window.

I can download fine using Rapidshare and other larger sites but Depositfiles, easy-share,filefactory and similar smaller download sites - Leach balks at their downloads.

My only request would be for a proper resuming of downloads - It's frustrating to when a download has to re-download completely from 0% after a stall or to pause it.

Also maybe that it's window could shrink up and down from the menu bar - so it saves real estate.

Or shrink into a mini-window when not in use.

But would recommend Leech, if you like a little more control over your downloads - and who doesn't ?

CORPSECORPS  To begin with, i thought this was great. However, i haven't once gotten it to download properly from RapidShare.

Regardless of the file size, i only wind up with a 4-12 KB download.

AKROBAT  I really like this app. It's simple, elegant and does it's job well.

The only thing I'd like to see is a 'download accelerator' built in, like iGetter and Speed Download. I use Leech regularly, however if I want good download speeds I have to switch to iGetter.

All in all a good job.

ELEGRAPHY  Leech is an easy to use, drag and drop download manager that intergrade with Safari. Guess who's the developer for this gem? Peter Maurer

He's the creator for Butler and the original brain for MenuCalendarClock, and other brilliant apps. Not only that, this developer has great support for his audience.

Last time I have trouble paying through PayPal when Leech has daily special on MacZOT.com, so I emailed ManyTricks; both the company and Peter made quick responds to my problem. As my appreciation I donated $20 to them as well.

VVARP  Great extension to your browsing experience.

Interface for setting up rules is really smart and dead simple, not to mention it works great. Thanks to this feature, Leech replaced DownloadQueue for me.

Nice job, I am waiting for more!

EXCOMAX  Okay, years ago, when I used to do my work on Windows-PCs, I had LeechGet installed. A really good download manager. Then, after switching to Mac, I looked around and found SpeedDownload, which is a really good download manager. But there are way too much options in it that clutter up the window. But it's cool. So I paid for SD4 and then SD5. And now I fell in love with Leech. The first moment I saw it I knew that Leech has it. It has everything I need. A clean interface nice auto clearing of the DL-list, closing after successful download... But version 1.0 had to flaws that made Leech a bit less useful: No direct browser integration and no possibility to set up rules. So I wrote to the developer. And I hadn't expected such a quick reply and shortly after that, Leech 1.1 has both functions built in. Now I can switch to Leech and don't have to cry one tear for SpeedDownload. The best thing is the switcher-discount. Instead of really cheap 9,95€ Leech is just 6,95€. Great!

I recommend that download manager to everyone who likes clean and fast UIs without the need of an built in ftp- or p2p-client.

Just one more thing would be fine as I realize now by using it as main program for downloads: Growl integration would be the top of all. I think I should ask for it. ;)

ROD76  I've also been a Speed Download user and have upgraded through several versions. But like you I've grown tired of its large and clunky interface and general bloat. I appreciate your review and am getting rid of Speed Download and upgrading to a cleaner/simpler program Leech (just get it done download manager). Thanks for your comments, they were a big help!
