ALJUK  OMFG! Where have you been all my life? This has to be a prime candidate for most useful mac utility in the universe ever.

Spell check isn't system wide, it's per app, and apps sich as stickies cannot disable it properly, even with the command line or python, so just being able to get rid of the silly red dots display is the way to go, and a godsend!

SIXER ___2  The SpellCheck in OS X annoys me too, but I don't think replacing the dots is the way to go. I'd rather see something that disables the Spell service.

You're not really disabling the spell checking, you're hiding it.

I've added a custom keycombo in the Keyboard sysprefs to easily switch off spell checking when its on.

KRYSTOF VASA  I know it's not really disabling it, but visually, it's a solution. I'm not saying it's perfect, but it is one. For the future I have a plan to create an app disabling the spellchecker on application basis (you won't need to replace anything physically), but that would be a bit harder to implement.

MAKAI  I dare to disagree. I like the idea of a system-wide spell-checking but sometimes the dots simply get in the way. For example, when starting to type an English text like this one here before realizing that the spell-checker is just set to German -- then all the text becomes 'formatted' in red underline, quite a nuisance. Worse, simply switching the spell-check on the text to English won't make the dots go away, until each single word gets 'kicked' with a double-click.
