STORMCHILD Still crashes on quit. It has done this from day one, through all of the updates, and every OS version I've tried it on. I've deleted the preferences and started with a fresh install several times, to no avail. You'd think eventually the developer would be able to resolve this issue, but apparently not. The Candelair remote driver helps restore the functionality of the Apple Remote, but even with that installed, I find the remote support very flaky in Plex. The Menu button often fails to go back; I end up getting stuck in some areas, and have to walk over to the keyboard to press the Esc key, which is rather annoying and pretty much defeats the whole purpose of having a remote. At one point the remote just stopped working at all. I went to quit/relaunch Plex to see if it would resolve the issue, when I discovered it's still crashing on quit (like it was when I stopped using it months ago), and here we are. (Version 0.8.3)

STORMCHILD Still no fix for crash-on-quit behavior? This has been happening since the very first time I installed Plex, many versions ago. I've deleted the preferences and started fresh, but nothing helps. I have literally never seen this program exit cleanly. It has crashed 100% of the time when I've tried to quit, from day one. This was on a brand new MacBook Pro bought less than two months ago, and this behavior was happening within the first two days I had the new machine, before I had even installed or used much of anything else on it. Bottom line: Plex is just not very well made software. I really wish it would work reliably, as it's a nice idea and clearly better than what Front Row has devolved into, but so far it just hasn't been worth the trouble. (Version 0.8)

Complaining about it "not being well-made" is one thing, but actually trying to work the developers to solve your problems is a much better solution. (Version 0.8.2)

E_COMMERCE An update to my previous comments. On the one hand, little has changed - initial setup and configuration is still decidedly arcane, and the updates are still the whole enchilada - 100MB per update now. However, they are coming at a much less furious rate, which helps. Don't let this be too discouraging. Once set up and configured it is an excellent, excellent media center, and has displaced Front Row on my home theater Mac Mini. It plays anything you throw at it, and launches in a fraction the time of Front Row. The user interface during playback is much more feature rich, and much more suited to HD displays. I really, really want to see this succeed. (Version 0.8)

Uninstalled and threw it away.

MIO This thing looks pretty, but that's all it does. Every time there is a new version I, install it, try it a few times a throw it out. It has to resolve aliases, absolutely has to. Or at least symlinks. I store all my media on a few NAS boxes in the garage. Even if I put the locations in manually the next restart it forgets 3/4's of them and they need to be put in again. And then there are the other, ehm, quirks... (Version 0.7.12)

STORMCHILD At this point in the game, I'm not going to complain too loudly about it, but I'm disappointed that this is Intel-only. There's probably some reason why it doesn't support PowerPC; an app written in Xcode would usually compile for both, but since this was ported from another platform, that might not be the case with this one. Mr Developer, I'm damned if I can figure out how to use this complicated and unintuitive software without some proper HELP. It MAY well be fantastic software, but unless you provide some USEFUL, CLEAR AND COMPREHENSIVE documentation soon, I strongly suspect that heaps of potential users - such as myself - will totally lose all interest in even trying to find out whether it is good or bad software. NO documentation whatsoever, after requests for same, in my view demonstrates a complete lack of interest in those people willing to give your software a fair try. (Version 0.5b10)

GRAPHIC_INNOVATIONS I have to agree with the last commenter - The developer did not 'write' this software, he has simply ported it. It has been around for years on the xbox, and going to the project's main page for pertinent information would be logical. That aside, I found the software to be quite intuitive... Every button performed the expected action, and adding external server sources was as easy as typing in their addresses... So what was it you didn't understand? (Version 0.5rc3)
| Sep 1 2008 |
GRAPHIC_INNOVATIONS Ah ok, so you went to the home page, read the manual and are still lost? Well, I guess there is no helping you. For me, typing in addresses with my keyboard is trivial. This version behaves exactly as the game console version, not sure what to tell you. (Version 0.5.14)
| Sep 1 2008 |
CJC1959AU And I would hope that you would give the developers a little bit of slack considering Plex is something you aren't even paying any money for. Have you even donated to the porting crew? Maybe if documentation is so important to you, then you should offer your services to the porting crew to write documentation and online help? or do you just want to whinge? Well, now that you are so annoyed with the poor Plex developers who are getting nothing for what they are doing other than satisfaction and the odd donation, are you going to actually put your hand in your pocket and purchase software that better fits your needs? I didn't think so! (Version 0.5.14)
| Sep 1 2008 |
CJC1959AU Oooooo gees, we are very bitchy aren't we? At no time have I made any personal comments or attacks at all towards you and yet you continue to attack me and others on a personal level. Not a good way to get people to help you. How to setup a Mac program? Open the dmg/zip file and drop the item into your Applications folder. Double click on the icon and follow what is on the screen by pressing a few buttons on your mouse, keyboard or Apple Remote and see what happens. I have at no time read any documentation for Plex or OSXBMC (what it was called previously). I just did exactly the above and went from there. I wonder what happens when I press this button? Oh, so that's what happens. Most of the skins are quite intuitive. Clicking on "Change My Settings" takes you to the configuration screens. Clicking on "Watch My Movies" takes you to your Movies folder. Clicking on "Listen To Music" takes you to your Music folder (but not unfortunately your iTunes folder). Clicking on "View My Pictures" takes you to your Pictures folder. Rather than getting all high and mighty and insulting everyone personally, why don't you try starting the program and pressing the arrow keys/enter a few times? I think you can also use your mouse by default too. You can also use an Apple Remote but I think that has to be turned on in one of the settings. You should be able to find it under Settings -> Remote (I think). You can also load up other skins and use them. Some of the skins are much simpler and easier to use than the current default skin. Look on the OSXBMC forums and you will find information about how to make any skin available for use. You can enable the mouse through the settings, but some think that typically it's better to use the keyboard. The default keys are as follows : - go up back (or up) a directory Is there heaps of stuff about Plex that I don't know yet? Quite possibly, I don't claim to be any expert on Plex. I just click on buttons and see what happens. And if I want to do something specific and I don't know how, I play around a bit and then I usually go to the OSXBMC forums or I do a Google search. I go looking for my answer. Is Plex perfect? Far from it, I never claimed it was. Is it simple and easy to use? I have found that mostly it is. Would it be easier if someone collected all the accumulated information and knowledge in one place and distributed it? Quite possibly For now, I'll just keep playing and see what happens when I click buttons. For a FREE program that works pretty well the majority of the time, I find exploration and learning a small price to pay! And I don't have to insult anyone anywhere along the way to do it! ANTHONY SIGALAS This is the Media Center software to use on Mac OSX. While it might seem daunting at first to set up, it's actually easy to use and offers a great deal of customizations. You can download skins to change the way it looks (I'm very fond of xTV, a Front Row clone). OSXBMC plays most of the known media file format with better results than VLC. High Definition MKVs look great and software upconversion do wonders on SD content. The developers are friendly and open to suggestions and this thing is free - what more could you wish? | May 15 2008 |
SCIFI Thats a typical remark we get when we make a simple request to not leave Tiger/Panther/PPC/etc. support behind on any open source project. It is understood that we may join a project and/or donate to it, goes without saying. If a team already involved does not know how popular Tiger/PPC/etc. still are and the reasons we cannot upgrade to Leopard/later and/or switch to (buy) an Intel machine, then we have the obligation to let the teams know. But there are more direct ways to let them know besides using MacUpdate as a sounding board, we should be using them also (e.g. file bugreports & such). Thank you. (Version 0.5b2)
| May 30 2008 |
XPANDER many of the dll's and libraries that XBMC uses are all dependent on the x86 architecture to function, so all those would have to be compiled to run on PPC first, and then xbmc would be able to make an attempt at running on PPC. Still running on PPC myself, I know it would be nice to have a version for us, but I'm not holding my breath that anyone would submit themselves to such a huge undertaking for a dying platform. That's wht I keep an old pc and (4) modded xboxes around strewn through the house. XBMC FTW. (Version 0.5b3)
| Jun 2 2008 |
TRONDAH SciFi: simple request? In your previous post you sound like you are being forced to use this software, and it's really easy for the devs to add tiger support. In reality, we are all lucky to have those few devs working hours and hours in their _spare_ time to get us XBMC for OSX. They do not have the resources to do a tiger port, for sure. No bug report will fix that. That's why I suggest talk to the main developer, he is actually very responsive to requests and a really nice guy. (Version 0.5b5)

AIRTRAXX Osxbmc is hands down the best media center option for OSX. Frontrow has nothing on it. Osxbmc can play all formats I've thrown at it so far, and plays HD encoded content the best when compared to using vlc or quicktime. I love that I can catalog all my media using the scrapers. Xbmc on the Xbox was great and I'm glad to have it on OSX. I had trouble watching HD content on the Xbox but now that it's on OSX which is running off my mac pro hooked up to my 1080p rear projection tv, everything just works. GMACKENZ Out of all the alternatives to Front Row, I think this app has the best potential to far surpass it. I am a long time user of XBMC on the original XBox and just recently moved my XBox upstairs for my wife to use as I now use this application for almost all of my home theater needs. I have nothing but the highest admiration for Elan (and the others who've joined the development efforts) to make XBMC a more mac-like application from the ongoing main Linux-porting efforts. Once python script support is fully stable, one of the final missing pieces will be in place and I could recommend this application for everyone. As of version 0.45, it is pretty stable and handles most media you can throw at it. (I also loved this project so much I sent $$$ for many beers to Elan.) (Version 0.4.5)

THAJEZTAH Very nice software, many options that are missing in Front Row although the interface is les intuitive (especially when used with the Apple Remote). The more recent releases are geared towards improving the integration with OS X (removing configuration-settings that are not required on OS X). (for those worried how to 'install'; XBMC is, unlike some other 'MediaCenters', a normal application, it does -not- replace Front Row, just drag XBMC to your applications folder and start it) Four star-rating; still some room for improvements. XBMC 5 will be released soon and promises to improve integration with the Apple Remote (Version 0.4.5)

MIKEMCDUFFIE It's amazing how quickly elan and crew are developing this port of XBMC. I replaced Front Row with XBMC early on in the builds as it's that good. Every release gets better and the team has a clear roadmap with milestones (features and target dates) published. The community support for XBMC in general and the Mac OS X port in specific are excellent. elan is very active on the boards (now get back to coding ;-). I'm donating and looking forward to version 0.50! (Version 0.4.5)

XPANDER This is hands down the best software for playing your media files. Nothing even comes close. I've been using it on my xbox for a couple years now, and it's just gotten better. I would go buy an intel mac mini just to install this and put it on my tv. (Version 0.4.5)
