MOOSEDESIGN  This is a hard product to recommend at the moment... Most of it works great, most of the time... but the support is absolutely appalling. Even saying "feedback" or "support" implies that it exists, and I am not convinced it does. There is not even so much as an automated response when you send in a request. If you have questions or issues its essentially up to your ingenuity and that of the community at large to solve. Aside from a basic troubleshooting guide there are no manuals, no blog, no references of any kind, so the total silence from support is truly galling. You don't have to look far to find that I am not exaggerating. So, like I said, hard to recommend. It works for the most part, but if you have any issues at all you are completely on your own. Don't expect any help whatsoever from Nullriver.

WWZ  I agree -- it seems like there is an emperors new clothes thing going on with this product. I just downloaded it and quite frankly it is terrible. Sure it can see my PS3 but the alleged "CopyCat" feature is non existent.

The ability to do any sort of rescaling of photos at all does not exist. It's just a silly preference pane. I wouldn't pay $1.00 for this let alone $20.00.

ths is just vapor ware. Don't waste your time.

ALEXF  From their site: "The final 2.0 version of MediaLink will include full video transcoding functionality that is being polished up for release very soon!"

That is awesome! Going to wait out the new alpha release (still on Leopard), but I'm glad Nullriver's been developing 2.0.

COVERTCRACKER  Same problem here -- one minute Medialink works (always works better for me to copy the file to the PS3 than stream, even though I'm hardwired -- head off problems before they happen), and the next it doesn't.

Over at Mac Forums (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=780165), someone posted a link to an earlier Medialink version that should still work with Snow Leopard and PS3 3.0 (installed, but haven't tried it yet):

EAK  I just upgraded my old Mac to a Duo Mac Mini and have been loving it. Just discovered Vuse and the PS3 device option and then found Medialink.

I installed both and started watching movies viewing pictures, etc...all without issue. I was in heaven.

A day later, I downloaded a bunch of vids (avi format) booted up the PS3 and my world changed. The vids loaded but it took 3 mins to start and then the stream stopped and started every few seconds.

The only think I changed on my system was loading up Timemachine. But since then I have turned it off and still have the same problem.

My apartment has a build in network and my PS3/Mac and on PC laptop all use it.

I have tinkered and tinkered with settings and even tried copying my vids to the PS3 hard drive but cannot make this work right or fast.

Frustrated in Vancouver. ;-)

GUITARPETE987  The program actually works great for me. Flawless music streaming, flawless video streaming, flawless with photos.

There' ONE quirk that BUGS THE HELL OUT OF ME:

Whenever I play a song, it takes the track information about 45 seconds to appear, and when the next song plays, the info for the previous song sticks around for that same amount of time.

This can't be my streaming speed, because HD movies play without a hitch (and their information appears immediately). I'm using Mac OS Tiger and Medialink 7.2.

Anyone have any suggestions?

DSCHLENKER  absolutely love this product! after moving from a windows environment + 360 to a mac environment + ps3 I was so excited to find medialink. v1.72 fixes a number of network related issues, can't wait to see how they improve this software in the future.

thing i love the most: attaching an external drive to my network, then having medialink broadcast the location to the PC. I no longer need to have my music & pictures on my computer to watch/listen on my tv.

features - music, video, files, pictures - they cover the gamut

ease of use - installs as a preference pane, always on!

value - currently priced at $20, less than the cost of buying a cable to connect my computer to the TV.

stability - recent update, 1.72 has made the product incredibly stable

Future Mini-Request - *if* it's possible to detect when the PS3 is communicating with Medialink, prevent the computer from going to sleep. (Alternatively, if the two are communicating .. prevent link from dying when notebook lid is closed).

After the download, the software did not discover my PS3 device at all. I never even found install or setup instructions. I feel GYPPED! I contacted Nullsoft via their Contact form and I have yet to hear ANYTHING back! WTF@!? That, my friend, is TERRIBLE customer service. I buy a product, I expect it to work. If anything, I expect a blog or notification that there is a problem with the current version. DUDE if there is no fix soon, I will be requesting my money back. Not cool.

DIAMOND  Seeing as all Media servers for MAC are "try before you buy" You were even more silly to pay up front.

Routers are the cause of the Errors with medialink, 1 G bit router models support was improved. But at cost to the 100Mb/s router speeds and the reduction of Copy cat mode speed.

TILTEDCIRCLE  Yes, okay so I want to apologize for my brashness earlier. I do feel that the method of contacting Nullriver should have included an automated 'thank you, .... please allow 24hrs...' email or something. @DIAMOND, I DID 'try before you buy' back on version 1.59 a month or two ago. I had no problems then, didn't think there would be any problems now. Silly or not, I decided to go for the gusto. (In retrospect, I should have tested the newest version.)

In regards to Nullriver, I did receive a response appx. 24hrs later. It was basically an email telling me to debug the network and the software that could have been interfering.

I basically used 'AppCleaner' to remove a few unused apps that could have been the culprit, re-downloaded the latest version 1.72 of MediaLink and things worked as it should.

@Nullriver, my thoughts about this app is that it works pretty darn good. I thought so a few months ago, and I still think so now. My only gripe is that customer service and/or UX (User eXperience) needs improvement.

So, again, apologies. I had a networking weekend from hell. I think I will stick to Semantic UX Design. Do try this software! When all is well, it is easy to set up.

GARY W.  I recently discovered this phenomenon about being able to stream from mac to PS3, so was pretty excited. I downloaded it both for my older desktop (white intel) Tiger mac, and also for my newer Leopard alum. Macbook.

However, I can't get it to work for desktop Tiger, (won't recognize PS3 or vice-versa) but works fine on notebook Leopard.

I even switched the connections so the notebook would take the place of the desktop. Works fine. Amazing. Cool.

I would assume the author is working on a fix here, and will be updating before too long.

So My rating is strictly for Leopard/Macbook, and not for Desktop/Tiger, which would be a zero. If it works, it works great!

PRINCEDRAVEN  Stopped working!

I have had this app for months and rely on it to stream all my media from my iMac to my PS3, it is all hard wired and worked very very well, until a few days ago!

Now the PS3 will either not see the MediaLink at all or (following a stop and start of the MediaLink sharing) see it but will not link (DLNA error!).

So it has gone from something that i use on a daily basis to something that will not work at all! - Disaster! :(

Not sure what caused the issue as i have updated both the MediaLink software and the PS3 firmware recently, but hope the people at Nullriver can get it sorted soon!

A few days ago i would have rated this as a five out of five app as it just works and works pretty well, now thought it is a zero out of five as it does not work at all.

If anyone else had this issue and found a fix i would really appreciate some feedback.

MACMUCHMORE  About a month ago, I purchased and installed MediaLink with the hopes of being able to stream all of my movies to my PS3 from my mac. Unfortunately all of my video files would start playing on my PS3, then stop with network errors. I was VERY disappointed with MediaLink.

Today I installed the 1.72 update and all of my issues have been resolved! All of my videos now play smoothly on my PS3 and I now I feel that MediaLink has fulfilled my every expectation and works just as nullriver had advertised. I now feel like I can recommend this product to all my friends.

MARK EVERITT  A free alternative (for a little legwork) is Mediatomb. You have to install it via Macports, but once Macports and Porticus are installed it's simply a matter of finding Mediatomb with the search in Macports and enabling it. This gives you a web interface to add files to the Mediatomb database too, so you can easily select what you want to stream.

The link below describes the process (using Fink instead, but it doesn't really matter how you install Mediatomb) and how to alter a couple of files to tweak Mediatomb for the necessary formats.

MARK EVERITT  That's where you're wrong. I bought a mac as a machine to work on. I'm a postgraduate researcher and sometimes a programmer. I got my mac because I still get the best of what linux has to offer along with the gloss of OS X. By keeping my mind open and trying new things, I do a lot of things for free which you could wind up paying $100's on. There is a reason that the terminal is a part of OS X.

Not everyone shares your opinion of how to use an operating system. If by PC you mean windows, then this software is not available for it, and this type of install would be highly irregular. If you mean linux then for the major distros this is available as a binary, so more like windows than the procedure I linked to for the mac.

I've simply suggested an alternative for those people who are prepared to experiment. I'm not forcing it upon you. I've had a good experience with this software and I wanted to save some people money. If you don't want to mess around in the terminal, just skip over my post. Buy Medialink. You'll be happy with their software. I'm sure that it's a cleaner looking app and performs very well too. My post is in no way a criticism of MediaLink or similar commercial software and was not intended to be read as one.

ROBOTANK  The PS3 can decode DivX/XviD and H.264/AVC. It can handle AVI and MP4 (or M4A) containers. I haven't tried but I doubt that MKV containers work. I'm not sure about the MOV container--I haven't seen that format used in quite some time. For QuickTime compatible video now the standard seems to be an MP4 container, preferably with the M4V file extension (this allows QuickTime to read chapter markers and decode AC3 audio). I suggest using HandBrake with the PS3 preset to encode your video (HandBrake now accepts almost any input format). The result is an H.264 encode in an MP4 container with additional settings optimized for PS3 playback.

GYGES  In addition to Robotank excellent reply; the PS3 indeed does not play MKV files. I use a Windows app (MKV2VOB) to change the file to an VOB file which does get played on the PS3.

Jan 19 2009

ROBOTANK  That's useful information. I forgot to mention that PS3 could play VOBs (the MPEG-2 video files contained on video DVDs). I thought I'd add, on the subject of MKV containers, that HandBrake and VisualHub can handle MKV containers for conversion as well. Turning them into MP4s with H.264 will result in far smaller files than MPEG-2 VOB conversions. (VisualHub is now discontinued but going open-source as FilmRedux; see this MacWorld article for more info: http://www.macworld.com/article/138248/2009/01/filmredux.html?lsrc=rss_main)

ROBOTANK  I've only been using this app for a week or so, but so far I'm quite pleased with its functionality. It's extremely easy to use and far more convenient than using a USB stick to get data to my PS3. As far as streaming goes, it works perfectly with music and some video files. When I try to stream a larger and higher bit rate video file (most of my encodes are done using HandBrake's QuickTime or PS3 presets), the stream can't quite keep up with the picture. I'm not entirely sure whether MediaLink is to blame or whether my home WiFi network simply can't handle the bandwidth (wireless-G, 54mbps I think). In any event, it's not a big deal since MediaLink allows me to easily copy the files to the PS3 for viewing. While everything isn't quite perfect, overall MediaLink is very good software, and I would recommend it to any Mac/PS3 owner.

BENICHOLS  I have owned this software since before version 1.5. It is easy to install and setup. The PS3 sees my Mac reliably. I am able to flawlessly access music and photos (low bandwidth). The PS3 and Mac are wired and connected to a gigabit Apple Extreme Airport. All of my videos are encoded via Handbrake 0.93 with the Universal Preset. Videos will stream fine to the PS3 for about 20 minutes and then will invariably stop playing with an "unsupported format" or similar error. Initially, I thought that this was due to the PS3's flakiness, since the file would play fine if I copied it over to the PS3. However, I recently installed TwonkyMedia server on the same Mac. The same video files play flawlessly over the same network connection. I emailed support at Nullriver but of course have gotten no reply.

In summary, if all you want to do is stream music and photos to your PS3 from your Mac, this is great software. However, if you want to stream video, choose something else (ie Twonky). I really wish Nullriver would fix this problem as I prefer Medialink's interface to Twonky. Final rating 2 due to frustration with watching movies for 20 minutes then crashing. Will up to 5 stars with a fix.

R2THAC  I've been using this since it first came out. Mostly I've been pleased with it, but it acts kind of flaky sometimes. I'm not sure if the problem is down to my router or the way I have my network set up, but I can't blame MediaLink for the few complaints I have.

The few complaints I have are big ones, though. The first (and worst) was that it started stuttering noticeably during video playback. Sometimes it would freeze for up to a minute or more and then play for only a few seconds before freezing again. I found that if I sat it out this would only happen a few times and then playback would continue as normal.

To avoid the freezing problem, I would sometimes copy a file over to my PS3 before watching it. This usually worked without a hitch, but every now and then the file transfer would keep erroring out, and I'd just have to give up and try again later.

And then — and this only happened two or three times — sometimes a file would freeze up and would never resume, and eventually I'd get kicked back to my XMB and the file's icon would have changed to one that read, "corrupted data." Now, I know the file isn't corrupted, so I'm not sure why this happens. Every time this has happened, I've gone back to find that MediaLink had suddenly stopped sharing files. Turn it back on and things start working again.

One thing I found that helped was to disable UPnP in my router settings. I was under the impression that this needed to be on for MediaLink to work, but someone suggested that I turn it off to keep from getting the "disconnected from the media server" message. I tried it, and so far I haven't had any stuttering or mysterious disconnects.

Despite the problems I've had, they've been relatively minor and not that frequent compared to how often things work as they should. The program does what it says and does it well when it works (which is most of the time). And I'm no networking expert, but I know how fickle these things can be, so I wouldn't jump to blame MediaLink for any of the aforementioned problems. For $20, it's well worth it.

RPSX  i signed up just to write this review. i gave it a 3, because 6 months ago i would give it a 5, and now i give it a 1. it worked pretty well when i first got it - then, with each update, performance has actually gotten worse. now, i actually see quite annoying and new playback bugs - not, just speed problems. though, more and more that happens as well, though sometimes restarting the medialink server helps. my system has not changed. buyer beware. at the rate they are going it will be unusable in a few months. keep a usb hard drive handy to copy your files too, as its the only way around frustration with restarting the software, and sometimes after doing so having it stream at a proper speed and sometimes not. really frustrating. if there is some programmer with the knowledge to create a dlna server for a mac, now is the time to give it your go because these guys have lost that knowledge or they are just getting sloppy.

ASHMADUX  yeah it would be great if there was better reviews and information for this program. I am highly suspect of nullriver because of thier past performance with some of thier software and lack of support- most notable being pspware, which started out great and became a complete disaster. they simply stopped updating it, even when sony came otu with new features. usability dramatically shifted from one version to the next.

however, i have the demo installed, have had it for sometime now, but one bitten twice shy. and this has been out for sometime, doesn tseem like much people are using it, so i cant help but think this is goignto happen again. couple these guys past perfomance and sony's ability to screw up ps3 updates, i guess ill be on the fence a lot longer.

PAUL F  I've been using Nulriver MediaLink for about 2 months now. Installation was easy and trouble free, and once installed it just worked with my PS3 - no messing around needed.

It plays all of my music, including DRM-protected songs bought from the iTunes Store, and shows the album art on the screen. It gives access to playlists, including those generated by the new 'Genius' facility. The only criticism I have is it could be easier to select a specific song - they are alphabetical and it takes a while to scroll to something in the middle of the alphabet, but I think that's down to the interface Sony have provided on the PS3 rather than MediaLink.

Viewing photographs works fine, although it is a bit on the slow side. I found Elgato EyeConnect works faster, however it doesn't support iPhoto Events. Medialink does support events, so it's easy to find photos if you've got a large number like me. I get round the speed by pressing the 'next' button as soon as the photo loads, and usually by the time it has loaded I've finished looking at the last photo.

I haven't tried playing movies, so can't comment on that.

The software gives an alert that there's an update available when you open it (via system preferences), and links to the website to download the new version. One of the new versions didn't work and I had to roll-back to the previous version, but that's the only problem I've had.

If I log into the mac as myself, I get access to my music / photos on the PS3, and if we log in as another user we get access to their content instead.

My wishlist for the product is to stream internet radio to my PS3, I did find a product that allows this (not from Nulriver) but it was a program for techies not end users!

Overall, I'd say if you want easy to use media-streaming for your PS3, MediaLink is well worth the money.

The NullRiver site suggests burning the protected audio files to a CD and then re-importing them to iTunes. Not sure how this would work for a video file. Any suggestions?

LMORUM  Medialink installed really easily and has a simple elegant user interfact. My PS3 sees it listed without my having to do anything. The problem is that it doesn't see my movie files or pictures. What few AVI's it sees, it can only play a fraction of them. Most disappointing of all - the few movies it does see - stutters for a period of about 2 minutes after viewing 5 seconds of movie - then it plays another 5 seconds, pauses for another 2 minutes and so on.

Wasted my $20.

VERSANT  You indicated that MediaLink doesn't see your pictures. Are you running iLife 08? MediaLink won't recognize iPhoto unless you're running the most recent version of iLife. However, regardless of the iLife version, you should be able to access your pictures by navigating to the Pictures folder via MediaLink on your PS3 (e.g. under the Photos icon on the PS3 navigation, select MediaLink, but don't access iPhoto. Instead, navigate to the Pictures folder, select Originals, and then access each individual folder (typically the year and then roll number); you should be able to view the photos on your TV. It's not optimal because you have to sort through each individual picture file, but it is a workaround if you don't have iLife 08.

As for AVI files, I can't offer any comments, but I'm able to access any .m4v file that is not protected via DRM.

LMORUM  Thanks for the reply. I am navigating to the Aperture option - as I use that application for all my pictures. I am not able to see any images in any of the Aperture albums.

I can't play any music either - each playlist appears empty on the PS3.

A tiny percentage of AVI files play - and even then - it pauses for 2 minutes after playing 5 seconds of movie.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

VERSANT  I can't offer much help regarding Aperture as I don't use the application. My advice would be to locate where the actual photo files are stored on your computer (in iPhoto, they are located in the iPhoto Library folder within the Pictures folder).

Try this: Go to MediaLink preferences (in System Preferences, click on the MediaLink icon). Look at the left side window. Is there an item entitled "Folders"? In my case, I see four items: Aperture, Folders, iPhoto, and iTunes. Click on the Folders icon (not Aperture). You should see the icon for your user account and various other folders. This is where you need to ensure that the folder containing your actual photo files appears. As mentioned above, my files are stored in the Pictures>iPhoto Library folder. If the folder that you need is not located here, add it using the "+" button below the right side window. Once you've completed this step, wait a few minutes and then access MediaLink on your PS3 -- make sure you select Photos from the PS3 menu (the camera icon). From here, navigate to Folders and then Pictures (or the file that you added in MediaLink preferences on your Mac). Since I can't see what your PS3 selections look like, you may need to navigate further, but you should be able to access the folder that contains your picture files. Once there, you should be able to actually access each file and view it on your TV screen.

iTunes is a different matter, and per my original post, I don't understand why Nullriver, the developer of MediaLink, doesn't provide an instructional guide indicating the basic requirements of the software. Nonetheless, I'm willing to bet that if you can't access your songs when you navigate (on your PS3 menu) to Music (the musical note icon on your PS3 menu) and then iTunes, it's because your music files are protected (per Apple's DRM protection). If this is the case, you won't be able to access your music unless you unprotect them because Apple's protection scheme doesn't permit streaming to devices other than AppleTV or Airport Express. The only way around this is to remove the DRM protection; this can be done by 1) burning your music to CD's and then copying them back to iTunes or 2) purchasing software that will do this for you (i.e. Tune4Mac).

As for the AVI files, I can't offer any assistance. The video files that I access are unprotected mpeg-4 encoded.

This is way too much for any one to have to figure out; Nullriver is hurting sales by not providing guidance to its customers. For now, you have to rely on blogs and hopefully this helps.

LMORUM  Thanks for your tips - however I have tried the following:

1. Navigating to the actual folder containing the images - instead of the Aperture option. Even though I go to the folder with the images, the folders are all empty.

2. The music files (I have about 30,000 of them) are not protected content so they should play without a problem.

3. I have even tried creating a small Mpeg-4 encoded movie - and even this won't play.

So I'm unfortunately at the end of the road - I suppose I have to try and find something else that actually works.

HYMINDED  I transitioned from Tversity, which doesn't support Macs, and searched for a reliable streamer. I thought I found it here, but instead discovered mysterious instances of disconnects. Frustrated, but glad I didn't spend $20, I removed this app from my System Preferences. I wish I could say this worked. I really do. The interface is simple, elegant, and appropriate for the Mac, but it just seemed flaky.

VERSANT  MediaLink 1.59 appears to be a great product and does what it says once you get it up and running. The problem is that no instructions are provided with the download and the Nullriver website provides zero guidance.

Others may have alternative methods for an optimal setup of MediaLink, but the following steps worked for me:

Upon opening the download, MediaLink will establish a preference pane in System Preferences.

In MediaLink (located in System Preferences), do the following:

* Go to the Sources tab and add any folders that you want to access on your PS3 by selecting the Folders icon and using the +/- sign. Aperture, iPhoto, and iTunes icons should already appear in the left window and no action is required for them.

* Don't start UPNP sharing yet (don't press the start button above the folder selection windows)

Now go to System Preferences and select the Security icon.

* Select the Firewall tab and click on "Set access for specific services and applications".

* Click the "+" button and navigate to Macintosh HD\Library\Preference Panes\MediaLink.prefPane. Select the MediaLink file.

Return to MediaLink (located in System Preferences). Click the "Start" button to enable UPNP sharing.

Check your PS3. You should be able to access your files (you should see MediaLink icons under the Photo, Music, and Video icons on the Xross Media Bar).

Once I completed these steps, the PS3 recognized MediaLink each time I turned it on. I'm not sure why Nullriver doesn't provide simple documentation to assist users, but hopefully this will help anyone having problems.

Note: The Firewall step is the key. Some blog posts indicate opening UDP and TCP ports (9386 and 9385, respectively), but after going through the aforementioned steps, port mapping was unnecessary (I'm running Leopard and can't vouch for requirements of previous Mac OS versions).

An alternative firewall setting is to select "Allow all incoming connections", but doing so could make your Mac vulnerable from a security standpoint.

CHAOTICPIXEL  This software has revolutionized my entertainment system! I can't believe I haven't figured this out sooner. MediaLink works perfectly and as advertised. The intergration between PS3 and my OS X 10.4.11 is seamless, as it is with iTunes and my entire movie collection (.avi). The movies play in real time with no stutters or interruptions; music plays beautifully as well.

Here is a small tip. Either turn off your firewall or open up the TCP port 9386 and UDP 9385. When you go over to your PS3 just go to music or video and look for MediaLink folder in the "drop-down"; don't click on "search for media servers" as it should already be there.

Lastly, NullRiver is a great company. I accidentally make a purchase through PayPal using an eCheck, and it would have taken days to get my hands on the validation code to activate the app. So, in trusting that this was a good company, I actually repurchased the software using a CC, then sent them an email. Within hours they had already refunded me for one of those purchases. AMAZING!

Highly recommend this company and their product!

It is very very slow and constantly crashing my PS3, ie: about 10-15 seconds from selecting music track to actually playing it!

I have emailed them about this numerous times and the solution was don't use it over wi-fi.

Take from that what you will but if you want something to stream over wi-fi I would stay well clear of this program!

Also, the other apps are just as slow, if not slower, and much more error prone. It also does AAC's directly instead of needing to transcode like on EyeConnect.

PHILBZ  Do not miss understand my comments, I really want to like and use this program and as I said when it was first released it was a brilliant program, but between Sony's firmware updates and Nullriver's updates it is now broken. It is not all Nullriver's fault as I believe Sony have made changes to the way the PS3 streams now.

I would hardly say that it being the best of a bad bunch is a selling point! I just wanted to warn people before they spent their money and were in the same position as myself where it has become so irritating to use I just switch it off!

Here's hoping that future updates remedy these problems!

BADGERS_NADGERS  Installed the trial and it seemed to work a treat. Paid for the full version and wish I hadn't. If you change between what your streaming (video/pictures/music), it will come up with a server error. It will also come up with a server error after you've been using it for a while (not sure exactly how long as I haven't timed it, but it seems to be around 20 mins to half an hour). The only way to get it to work again after one of these failures seems to be to switch the app on and off in the menu bar and restart the PS3.

Emailed support, but got no response. I've seen quite a few people on various forums have the same problem as me. If it worked as it should, this would be an absolutely fantastic product, but it's too flakey I'm afraid.

SIDDHARTHA  I purchased this in addition to Connect360, as I have both a PS3, and XBox 360.

I had not been able to use either for about a year, as the computer would recognize the systems, but no music/photo would show up on the PS3/Xbox360. I went back and forth with the developer, and could not identify the problem-I was told this was likely a firewall issue, and I needed to make sure it was off-I checked the built-in Mac OS firewall, and made sure it was off, and also the router's firewall. I finally gave up.

Checked it again, and remembered I had Intego's netbarrier software running-sure enough, that was the problem!

Both work now, as they did before, which is flawlessly, and stable. I am very impressed with the software, and use it all the time now-I routinely play music through the PS3 while I am making dinner, and it's nice to have the sound in the living room, rather than have to blast it from the office. Pictures, too, show up bright and clear, and the interface is idiot-proof (well, make that "almost" idiot-proof, as I have been the idiot of exception)

Great software, and well worth the $

MR.ASH  Well worth it's money. Works perfectly with my PS3 and gives complete access to my iTunes, iPhoto and movie libraries.

What's still missing are some trancoding functions for movies that aren't nativly supported by the PS3 (like MKV for example). A funktion like "Automagic transcoding" (like in connect360, also from Nullriver) witch converts a movie on the fly to a compatible PS3 format would be great, so i can stream even unsupported media to my PS3.

For those who have problems:

If your PS3 and Mac are connectet to a non uPnP capable router you have to forward TCP port 51413 to the IP of your Mac where MediaLink is installed. To uninstall you just have to stop MediaLink and delete the preferencePane in /library/preferencePanes, that's it.

I was also surprised to see you can play off of attached media, like a USB drive.

The only thing I wished it would do is play the music attached to slideshows in iPhoto. I also wish it could play protected content, like MPEG 4 from iTunes. I know I can re-rip them, but what a hassle.

Medialink is very intuitive, in the spirit of most things mac and has value as its the best Mac/PS3 link out there. I know it will only get better.

I've only experienced problems when streaming 720p/1080p content over my home wifi network. Everything else has been good.

Feature wise, they could improve on grouping content in the manner the PS3 allows with stuff directly on its HDD. Improve interface of medialink content streamed to and appearing on the XMB.

JDUB800  Sorry, you've actually missed my point - I'm talking about piping Growl notifications through to the PS3. Messages would appear on the PS3 - about the Mac. Not the other way around.

Beige: You'll want to see your wife about that!! ;)

JDUB800  After my earlier comments, I wanted to say that the latest version appears to work flawlessly. I threw some large HD + 5.1 audio media at it and it all played without a hiccup.

Great work - All is good. I'm now going to revise my ratings accordingly - only fair!

Now, how about some Growl notifications? :D

TRONDAH  What notifications would that be? "You are

now playing on your playstation?" Just curious :)

Looks like they are intent on making this an attractive piece of software though!

JDUB800  The kind of notifications were to do with the Mac - Ever used Growl?

Obviously not...

TRONDAH  Yes, I know what growl is and use it a lot. I'm just wondering what specifically Medialink would need to notify the user about.

Just asking, I welcome new and useful features too :)

JDUB800  np - I was thinking along the lines of any notifications that were forwarded to other computers could include the PS3 as a viable destination.

Examples could include new email, backup complete or anything that is setup to respond via Growl...could be pretty much anything.

TRONDAH  I don't think you understood my question. You say Medialink should have growl support. What message would Medialink display with growl? "You are now watching the Matrix on your PS3"? That would not be necessary, as you already know what you are watching.

TRONDAH  Ok seriously thank you Nullriver for this! Finally decent UPnP software for my lovely Mac. Not only that, the software is great, and it keeps getting better, like twice a day! I bought it right away and would gladly pay double. Finally my PS3 is starting to use some of it's potential.

ZKMUSA  Medialink 1.1 works like a charm and fixes many of the past issues I had with the software. Everything is working great (iPhoto integration, playing music and podcasts from iTunes, as well as playing DivX and Xvid files). These guys have been pumping out a new update every day since the software was released, and the polish is really beginning to show.

I have one small comment. Why does "iPhoto" show up in the music section? It doesn't seem to have a place there.

I also wanted to personally vouch for NullRiver. I am also an owner of their Xbox 360 streaming software, Connect360, and they are always quick to make updates when necessary. For example, when the Fall 2007 dashboard update was released (which enabled Divx playback on the 360), NullRiver released a Connect360 update in only a couple days.

For you iPhone users out there, these are the guys that develop Installer.app, so they deserve a lot of praise for their contribution to the community.

***..

JDUB800  I set it up last night and found it to be generally reliable, but not quite perfect.

Non-DRM'd iTunes tracks work nicely, as well as videos and iPhoto images. iPhoto events are also supported, as well as DivX. The ability to browse a whole volume is also welcome.

There are a few annoying delays and pauses during the loading of some media - and I had to do a PS3 restart because of a possible lockup.

Easily the best OSX/PS3 solution. A promising start - Room for improvement though!

ATA  I'm running 10.4.9 with a wireless network and every time I click on the 'Devices' tab, it crashes my System Preferences. Regular MP3s show up as 'not supported' on the PS3. I was able to get this to work initially but after upgrading to 1.0.2, nothing seems to be working now. All the files show up while browsing on my PS3 but when I try to play them it hangs and hangs. I already purchased it since it immediately saw all my iTunes playlists from an external drive. I was really excited but now nothing works. I hope some improvements are made very soon or else I will regret this purchase big time and have to go back to crappy old Twonky :-(

JACKO  Works great, on my system, for pictures and music. I had some problems, with the movies, and am waiting on a support response. My thought is that it might have something to do with network and how the movies are streamed. I don't have any issues with AppleTV doing the same tasks.

JACKO  Just tried newest version and am still having same problem. Haven't heard from the developer yet. Hopefully, it can be fixed. Still works great on music and photos.

STRUCTAURAL  Works great for me. Running 1.72, worked well under my 30 mins demo (though had to restart it a few times to iron out router problems).

If your router (mine is a Sagem - used with Wanadoo/Orange) doesn't support uPnp (like mine), then the port opening detailed above (I'll resupply as one of the above posts is incorrect) worked for me and stopped the Protocol error). Helpful also it to make sure the PS3 is running when you start up medialink:

open ports:

TCP: 9386

UDP: 9385

I think it would be good for the developer to readme.txt this information, or stick it on their website.

RUNCITER  HI everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm new to PS3 players. I bought the new PS3 "slim" yesterday and downloaded Medialink to my Macbook (which has the brand new leopard 10.6). I see medialink on my PS3 but all my folders are empty and I get (only from time to time) a DLNA 2000 error. I have a Linksys router that supports N and I tried going over my wi-fi network and connecting an ethernet cable to the router from my PS3. I made sure that iTunes, iPhoto and file sharing are all allowed on my Mac. I disabled my firewall, as well. Why is it that I can't see any media files (just empty folders) on my PS3? This is really frustrating and I'll greatly appreciate any insight or help someone can provide.

Thanks!

Runciter
