JOELWNELSON  The beta release set up a new "profile" for testing purposes. Stick to the release versions only and you shouldn't see that behavior. Incidentally, 2.1 final is now out and it successfully upgraded in place on my end.

LARRYMCJ  I rarely take time to post comments here, though I read a lot of what others have to say and those comments generally have a large influence on my software purchasing decision. But with Mailplane I really feel compelled to say a few things since I think Mailplane is not getting a fair evaluation here, and it's primarily because of its price. I just now looked at Mailplane again for the first time since its early beta days and I'm way impressed!

I have been in the computing business, specifically the software business, for over 15 years and I'm also a huge Google Apps fan and couldn't live without Gmail. That said, Mailplane does many things, but first and foremost it cleans up the Gmail interface of Google ads...that alone is worth the price of the software!

Next, it just runs faster and also cleans up the user interface with standardized toolbar buttons we're all familiar with and if you have to work with file attachments, being able to drag-drop them into a message is also by itself worth price of Mailplaine. Add to these things all the other nearly 40 improvements it makes on Gmail and you end up with a real live email client on your desktop that looks good, works good, and allows you some customization that Gmail does not.

My hat is off to the folks at Mailplane for improving this so much since I first looked at it when it was in beta...you've done a marvelous job. Any developer who has done this much with their product can be expected to do even more, so I'd expect to see Mailplaine evolve into an even better application in the future.

JAZZYGUY  I tried it and found it to be a totally unnecessary expenditure of $24.95. In addition the uninstall feature failed to remove the app or the folder in ~/library/application support. Why bother when Gmail really is quite a sufficient unit on its own?

HMURCHISON  I guess that's for each person to decide regarding the value they place on Mailplane. I tend to prefer working "outside" of a browser and having native app controls. $25 dollars to "ehance" a free tool like Gmail sounds expensive but for me I'll likely purchase the family pack for $15 more that gives me Mailplane on up to 5 Macs for $40. That's 8 bucks a computer and a different value prop. Plus I think that the developer is going to be able to link Mailplane up with more apps like he's done with Omnifocus.

HMURCHISON  So basically you're saying price is your primary concern? That's fine but to others $24.95 probably doesn't really "break the bank". I know there's a contingent of computer users that love free stuff but there are also many that love simplicity. That's why we compute with Macs even though they come with a pricing premium for given specs. If Gmail keeps a person very happy then the standard web version is going to be fine but some people want ehancements with their OS and the ability to switch between multiple accounts and the $24.95 is a pittance to some for the benefits of desktop integration. The value is perceived differently by different folks. Some free is most key and others productivity/ease is most key.

HMURCHISON  Gmail isn't all that efficient if you want to switch multiple accounts or attach files with any kind of speed. I attach files all day at work and would really be hampered by the slow file attachment process for gmail. Anyone with more than one gmail account instantly sees the benefit of being able to switch accounts with ease. When you say "it does the job" you really mean "it does the job for me" Those people who want more functionality and integration from their email client may not find that Gmail does the job.

GRIZZLER  I hesitated to buy Mailplane. It seemed that the web browser and Mail could do the job managing gmail. But I took the plunge, plopped down $25, and I think it was a good decision. Mailplane definitely improves efficiency for me, with my two gmail accounts. Switching between one account and the other is easier than using Firefox or Safari. Mailplane handles attachments and photos better. Bottom line: It's a good interface for the gmail app, money well spent.

O5220803  The developer has been responsive and now MailPlane is working as advertised. It turns out that this very well designed and complete. MailPlane makes all the features of GMail readily accessible and easy to use. A really handy application for the heavy GMail user who wants to use this excellent Google service in an true mail-client setting on the desktop. Kudos to MailPlane's authoring team for a developing this a really useful GMail client! An excellent value for the serious GMail user.

O5220803  The Mac version of Mailplane 2.1b contains some icon buttons which are dysfunctional. Their recommended solution "Open your Gmail settings and enable keyboard shortcuts." O5220803  CORRECTION: in Mail Plane select "Standard View" in GMail; then Select "Settings", THEN: "Open your Gmail settings and enable keyboard shortcuts"; it works correctly for the Mac version of MP. BTW, this solution was found through experimentation. MP should update their "Help" information to reflect this.

CROUPIER49  Version 2.1b is a beta version. The developer's website clearly states the version is beta and notes there may be some bugs since it's still being tested. The site suggests you use the most stable released version (instead of the beta version) if you don't want to be part of testing or experience bugs. I use the most current released version (not this beta version) and have had ZERO problems. It's very handy and well-maintained. Yes, you can use a lot of free apps and browser add-ons to get similar (though not all) features as Mailplane, but they don't look or work as nicely.

IRRADIATED SOFTWARE  I simply don't see why $25 is considered too much for a tool like this. It saves time (if you gave multiple accounts or do a lot attachments regularly), the developer is prompt to respond to issues, the app is pretty and well done (even though I know it's just a wrapper around Fluid).

Bottom line, if you need it, you'll know it, and gladly pay the $25. If you don't need it, you'll know it, but don't make this an issue on price. Developers have to eat too you know...

HARRISTYPE  I completely agree. Finally a review that doesn't take cheap potshots at those who simply didn't like it. Every app under the sun has its supporters and detractors. I was an original beta tester, and unfortunately it wasn't for me. For what it did, I thought it was too expensive, but for others, I can see it be an invaluable app. The only reason I got involved with this discussion was because of the childish behavior of another reviewer and his insults just because some of us didn't like the app, or didn't agree with him. Kudos to the developer for his continued updates, and maybe someday, when it has the features I need, I'll take another look. It was never because I couldn't afford it.

SHERMAN WILCOX  I have to add my two cents to the reviews of this application. True, you can get much (certainly not all) of the functionality without purchasing Mailplane. But I used it for several weeks in demo mode and find that the extra efficiency it gives me (doing attachments, the easy access to my AddressBook data, good integration with iPhoto, and yes, just the extra menus and menu shortcuts) made it an easy decision for me to spend $25 on this (well, actually a little less, because the developer offers an educational discount).

Add to that the fact that the developer is quite responsive, and it's a winner application for me. Definitely happy with my purchase.

KILLER KLOWN KAR  Mailplane is for gMail power users. If you have multiple gMail accounts Mailplane makes taking care of them easy and convenient. Time is money, and something that optimized my time is easily worth $25. The fact that many of you can't comprehend that is probably why you don't have the $$$.

HARRISTYPE  I would consider myself a gmail power user, having 2 personal gmail addressess and 2 business gmail addresses. I was an original beta tester of Mailplane, and to me this program still falls short in several areas (like no access to Google calendars, at least when I last looked at it).

Right now, I'm using Firefox and a couple of add-ons, and gmail is working perfectly for me with all of these accounts, so shelling out $25 for a front-end to a free service is a waste of money.

KILLER KLOWN KAR  Once again you fail to understand the concept of time/money. I'm sure you have plenty of the first and little of the second. I have Mailplane running on four Macs. One a dual quad is for production only. I don't even launch a browser on it, (well rarely) but I do need email. Tell me el - cheapo how do I check my 4 gmail accounts at the same time? Firefox for all it's improvements still has memory leaks galore, and gmail doesn't really format correctly in Safari. Of course I suppose for the financially disadvantaged that is perfectly acceptable.

I simply find the reviews here to be pathetic. No one is actually reviewing the product. Everyone is simply whining like little bitches about the perceived value. Mailplane is solid, well supported, does what it claims, saves me time and effort. So what value is that, $25? Seems a pretty good deal to me. So use your crashing free browsers and plug ins. Free is what you establish your value/need as.

DIGITAL FURY  I have tried various version of this application in the past, but could never really justify paying $25 for it.

I guess with the effective launch of Google's "Gmail offline" free service, using an offline Gears database as a bonus, Mailplane has been rendered irrelevant; even more so the $25 that is asked for it.

BOBBYKARTOON  Used MailPlane free trial... I like this gmail dedicated app, it packs some convenient features. My only exception to it is the $25 price-tag... $10 - maybe, or perhaps a consideration if it was in a MacPromo Bundle or a significant discounted Promo. The one feature I found very convenient was the photo resizer. AppleMail, Gmail notifier, etc. do most of what MailPlane does for FREE! - I STILL LIKE THIS APP

HMURCHISON  $25 a lot of money? I guess relative to the price of a cup of coffee. Mailplane is a pretty simple concept. There are web apps and desktop apps. Web apps tend not to integrate within the OS (just the browser) for most things. Mailplane takes desktop app features and grafts those onto a web app. I don't know if it has offline features but for those who aren't always connected it would be nice to create a bunch of emails offline and send them when connected. You also have integration with desktop apps like Omnifocus. In the end $25 is a lot cheaper than any speeding ticket you're going to receive and the family pack is only 8 bucks more.

F451  Mailplane is for those who want a dedicated app that concentrates solely on Gmail. For example, my wife works on a Windows laptop that is carefully monitored and secured due the sensitivity of the data. She enjoys using Mailplane on my Mac when she wishes to check her Gmail account. Mailplane accommodates this very well without her having to open Safari, et al.

Better still is MailplaneÕs constant development addressing the needs of its users as the developer further delves into GmailÕs ever changing features. No regrets on purchasing a license for this outstanding app as it has easily become the headquarters for my many Gmail accounts.

GARY ANGELONE  I've been using this app since last year. I think it is the most convenient way to check my email, among other things. Gmail in a browser requires that i keep checking it, and the notifiers i've tried do not work well. This app has many useful features and has saved me a lot of time at work. It also takes the worry away that i have been sent something and wasn't aware of it. I am very happy with MailPlane. It was well worth the price asked. SANOOK  This is a good app, works well as advertised. It has nice features, such as the ability to have more than one account polled, nice interface with the ability to change font sizes, do some special views with gmail (like changing the gtalk location, label location, some others), and is relatively quick, too. It seems to be updated fairly regularly, with a fair trial period (30 days free). Advantages over fluid (or even just your browser) are the multiple accounts "active" at one time - most don't let you do that, and (I believe) google even logs you out automatically if you are logged in to more than one account at a time on a browser. So props to the author for getting around that limitation. I don't think it is really correct to compare to Mail.app, because gmail allows you to do a lot of things (labels, access to google docs, etc) that you can't do in Mail.app. If you just want to download your mail to Mail.app, then by all means do that. If you like to use the native gmail interface this is a good way of doing it.

...BUT...

$24-$25 is too much for a one trick pony, even if it is a beautiful PINK one trick pony. gmail browser is decent, but again, only one account at a time and you can't do any special formatting tricks, but is free. I guess I'm just a cheap Mac user or something, even though I really do like this app. Still, I think it deserves a good raiting, because it is a very nice app.

DIGITAL FURY  $25 for just having Gmail wrapped as a container browser application, when it works just fine for free, is way too much.

Firefox with the Gmail Manager add-on, allows you to switch easily from account to account - all for free. Most of the other features are rather gimmicky.

Bottom line is that asking $25 for something like this is not very reasonable. Is anybody actually paying for this???

BEBDABHRHBRWEFG 3R§5Y5H4WTEDSFB  why make things more complicated than they need to be?

just route your gmail account through OSX's mail.app and you can use mail.app to read and send email through your gmail account exactly as you can for any other email account you have.

log into you gmail account and got to 'settings > forwarding and POP/IMAP' and tick to enable whichever you want to use [hint: if you only see 'forwarding and POP' you need to set your language settings to US english - otherwise the IMAP options won't show]

back in mail.app, set up your new account and use imap.gmail.com [or pop.gmail.com]as incoming mail server and smtp.gmail.com as outgoing mail server with authentication = password, server port = 25 and use SSL ticked.

much less hassle than using a separate app just for gmail.

THECAUSE  I tried using Apple's Mail with imap as an alternative to Mailplane and while it was a mostly positive experience, when Mail decided to get all the accounts up to date it would take every single bandwidth resource and cause other programs to drop their Internet connection and sometimes Mail would even crash. (ie. a cd querying the CD Database would freeze in itunes) I noticed this problem on other computers with faster Internet connections, and the same hording of system Internet resources existed. Mail is very greedy. I don't know if Mailplane is worth the price, or if I should just wait for a Mail update..

MACBLISS  MailApp works a lot faster than using a browser to access your mail. It's optimized. And makes a big difference.

Sure mail can do imap and does a pretty good job -- but you lose some of the benefits of gmail itself. For example you can not see threaded conversations in mail -- gmail style, and your starred conversations don't translate as flags.

Also, in MailPlane it makes it very easy and fast to check multiple gmail accounts from within its interface.

Plus, your supporting a developer who says gives you a choice. Of course, you don't want it or need it, you can stick with your browser or use imap in Mail or other client.

But if you like the gmail interface and want it optimized, plus the addition of other benefits, MailPlane fits the bill nicely.

HELIOS9  Mailplane has some really nice features, but paying $25 for an email client that's usable with Gmail ONLY just doesn't make sense to me.

Make Mailplane usable with ANY email server and I'll buy a license in an instant! But just for Gmail? No way!

(I'd say that most folks who use Gmail as their primary email server are just too cheap to pay for an email service. There are many far better email services out there for a modest yearly fee.

Besides, Google constantly mines all it's Gmail accounts for information. There's no real privacy with Gmail.)
