WHOGBEN  WARNING on PARAGON NTFS for MAC OS X

I installed the Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX Trial today on a bog standard first generation Intel Mac Pro, running 10.5.7 and no other mods.

The installation asked for my password twice, which struck me as odd - but I did not have the foresight to cancel it. When asked to restart after successful completion I complied, and that's when the trouble started.

The computer restarted with nothing showing on the two standard Apple Cinema Displays. The fans which once used to adjust to the activity level of the computer are now constantly on high. The computer otherwise seems functional, despite that fact that it cannot find or display on any monitor in the house.

I accessed the computer over the network using screen sharing and ran the uninstaller for Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX - however this had no effect on the problems. In the system profiler under Graphics/Displays it says the system does not contain any supported devices.

Just how much damage the Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX trial managed I do not know. I know that the symptoms have stopped the computer from being usable, and include the system fans (& whatever system controls those) as well.

A quick trip to the Paragon support forums revealed a host of different problems people are experiencing, none of which were answered by Paragon.

I am writing to forewarn you, if there is any way you can avoid rolling the dice with Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX please do so, the results are unpredictable and in my case incapacitated the computer. Other people in the forums reported corruption of their NTFS and FAT partions causing complete data loss, and other issues that did not resolve themselves when Paragon NTFS for Mac OSX was uninstalled.

Do yourself a favor and steer clear - I certainly won't risk any other Paragon trials. I'm spending my day remote reinstalling Leopard in the hope it will resolve these issues - I hope by reading this you'll save yourself and your business that time.

ANARCHYJIM  I bought the 7.0 version in the hopes of sharing a 500gb RAID drive between my XP and Mac systems. Paragon installed easily and after rebooting, the drive mounted fine and seemed to be operational. I had a FCP project with about 40gb of files on the drive.

Before getting to work I decided to organize things a little, moving a folder with 20gb of QT movies into a different folder. Mistake. I got a 'this operation could not be completed because the files could not be found' error. The folder with the 20gb of movies then disappeared. Gone.

Luckily, I have this backed up... unfortunately I'm working remotely which means I now have to have someone overnight me the 20gbs worth of files that have ceased to exist.

It seemed to handle basic reading and writing of files fine, but after Paragon deleted the folder I tried to move, I unplugged the drive and uninstalled the software.

While this product might work fine for a drive you're using to transfer files where you can afford to have it occasionally and spontaneously delete files, I have zero faith in it for day to day use. Use at your own risk.

MARSOFEARTH  After downloading and trying the 10 day Trial period for Paragon's NTFS for Mac OS X here is my short review:

I was curious to find what extra features Paragon's NTFS for Mac OS X included for the premium of $39.95, as there are already freely available open source alternatives available.

The Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X is small package that installs like most Mac OS X programs with a requirement for a system restart at the finish. After restart, a new Preference Pane is installed in System Preferences where the user can select a few different options to the use of Paragon's NTFS for Mac OS X, including the option to disable. Two options that I noticed that are not found in other freely available projects are the options of "Access Permissions" and "Compress Files and Folders".

Selecting the check box for Access Permissions allows the use of Mac/UNIX style permissioning of files/folders on mounted NTFS drives to your mac. It is unclear if removing the drives and attaching to another computer maintains the permissions and if so how this is handled, or if the permissions are simply held within a database on the Mac using Paragon's NTFS for Mac OS X. Interesting idea however.

The other check box unique is Compress Files and Folders which compresses, you guessed it, files and folders on the NTFS mounted drive used by Paragon's NTFS For Mac OS X. I'm not really sure I am sold on this idea since drive space is so cheap and the performance hit would be substantial, however perhaps there is a use for this in unique situations.

Performance wise I compared Paragon's NTFS solution to that of NTFS-3G.

NTFS-3G is an Open Source package maintained and developed by Erik Larsson of Sweden. An Engineer with a passion for computer file structures it seems. His package and info can be found here; http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/ The NTFS-G package for Mac is much like Paragon's in that it has a very Mac like install Interface and installs all the needed file libraries and a Preference Pane for many different advanced options.

Both Paragon's and NTFS-3G performed equally well on ATA and SATA connnected NTFS drives. There is a performance difference if you choose the "Legacy" build of NTFS-3G over the "Standard" build of NTFS-3G. The Legacy build performs quite a bit slower than Paragon's when read/writing to NTFS drives over USB. This is likely due Paragon implementing 'drive caching' to speed up things on slower connections like USB or Networks. Installing the 'Standard' build of NTFS-3G shows equal performance to Paragon's NTFS For Mac OS X since the 'Standard' build does implement drive caching.

All in all performance wise I give it a tie between Paragon and NTFS-3G Standard.

Stability. Let's face it we need our file systems to be stable, and in my business it is pretty much mission critical in our GIS/Data lab. In our lab we are platform agnostic running various Windows versions XP 32, 64, and test beds of Vista 64 and even 64bit 7, Linux builds of openSUSE, Fedora, and Mint, and a bunch of iMacs running 10.5.6 as of this review. Now I am not sure if it is due to use using Virtual Machines for our systems, or some conflict not resolved yet on our Network, but connecting to some NTFS drives using Paragon's NTFS for MAC OS X cause some reported instability issues with Safari and the Finder. Other issues include not being able to launch our virtual machines under VMWare or Parallels. Disabling Paragon's NTFS for Mac OS X seems to resolve these issues.

Over all I would say Paragon's NTFS for Mac OS X is a fairly solid performer with a few exceptions that most consumers may not find themselves in.

For myself I do not find the addition of Permissions or File/Folder compression compelling enough to pay the $39.95 premium for a slightly less stable NTFS product in my situation.

Our lab and my home machine will stick to NTFS-3G and make donations to the Open Source product unless Paragon can develope greater value into it's NTFS for Mac OS X package.

MWOODARD  I disagree. macfuse and ntfs3g royally screwed me. I had to end up finding terminal commands on this stupid long list of people who had the same problem as I just so I got get my bootcamp partition to mount. you should actually just read through the bs on lifehack.org. I downloaded a program so I could read/write a drive and not only did it not give me the ability to write, but it took away my ability to read the drive. Sooo...they're dumb.

BARQSX  After installing this program, I noticed that my Macbook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.2) failed to go to sleep when idle, instead of obeying my Energy Saver settings to sleep after several minutes of idleness. It would stay on the ENTIRE night if I forgot to manually shut it down. After wasting half a day trying to figure out what the problem was, I uninstalled Paragon and my Macbook Pro now sleeps as normal!

A quick Google search finds that I'm not the first to experience this extra "feature" of the program.

I should also note that MacFUSE -- another NTFS enabling software -- also results in this failure to sleep, so the problem isn't unique to Paragon. However, at least MacFUSE is free...

DOUG S.  I've noticed a few issues relating to Paragon's NTFS for Mac and I just wanted to share them.

(1) Incompatible with VMware Fusion: In order to run VMware Fusion I have to go to Disk Utility and unmount the volume before I can run it.

(2) Safari Download Issue: When attempting to download a file via Safari, if the NTFS volume is mounted on the desktop the Safari will hang for about 15 seconds before it continues the download normally.

(3) Name In Finder: Though the volume's name is "Mimmic" both in Disk Utility and in Windows, it's mounted as "Mimmic 1" and no amount of changing on my part can fix this. It will change temporarily but the next time I mount the volume it will be "Mimmic 1" all over again.

(4) Finder Eject: I cannot unmount the volume by key command or dragging to the trash, I have to unmount it via Disk Utility.

It's a good little utility and once these issues are ironed out it'll be an invaluable piece of software.

if your using a non admin account it will require you to enter an admin password to be able to write anything to an ntfs volume.

the reason escapes me and technical support still haven't replied to my question. their website also sucks for documentation and actually working in general. there's supposed to be a support system on there but every time i log in there i just get a white screen.

JOEL.SCHMIDT  Also, there is a problem caused by NTFS-3G ONLY. Basically, NTFS-3G uses it's own driver and that prevents the startup disk preference panel from seeing the NTFS drives/partitions. Paragon's NTFS modifies the original Apple NTFS driver directly, which allows Startup Disk to work properly.

JOEL.SCHMIDT  True, they do the same thing, but they are two different ways of doing it. Paragon's software does not rely on having to install MacFuse as well as the NTFS-3g driver in to your system. Since everything in the Paragon version is tied together, you can avoid issues like the current compatibility bug between MacFuse and NTFS-3g. That alone makes it worth the price in my own opinion. Of course, you could always use pacifist to extra the files and install them manually if you want to be real cheap.
