JEFF H.  Doesn't show anywhere after install in Safari 4.0.3 (6531.9).

Goes through the install procedure but isn't in prefs afterwards...strange.

Anyone else?

CORPSECORPS  Anything which requires bringing up prefs to alter add blocking capability, requires blacklists or relies on subscriptions is of little interest to me. On the other hand, something like this that supposedly "works out of the box" is even worse.

My number one priority is an interface within the browser to allow for real-time creation and testing of rules. This is way too minimalist. It doesn't block half of what i would like, and i have no idea what it IS blocking.

If the iCab browser was cutting edge and it's filter system wasn't virtually incomprehensible it would be great. As it is, the only ad blocking solution which approaches any kind of adequate level of usability with power is Firefox + AdBlock Plus and Element Hiding Helper.

So it looks like i'll be staying away from Safari until something with some sophistication shows up. 8^(

ETHAN  Since there exist multiple (I counted 4) options, including doing the XCode 64-bit way, here's a summary:

Safari on 64-bit works with this mod from:

http://sweetpproductions.com/safariadblocker/

(Also listed here on MacUpdate)

The modifications of github are from this persons work:

http://burgersoftware.com/en/safariadblock

However, he uses the InputManager method. This has been depreciated and is NOT supported on 64-bit Applications. Apple wants the IM method to go away (google for more comprehensive commentary by some of the folks who have worked more with it).

There are also four or five forks, which I was unable to get working, looking like it had to do with the problem with IM on SL due to 64-bit.

The first mentioned build works because it uses a 64-bit build, using normal SIMBL plugins you can install via ~/Library/SIMBL/Plugins

It also takes care of installing SIMBL, using the 0.9.7a (at this time of writing) SIMBL plug.

I also assume GlimmerBlocker works, since it is NOT an InputMananger but instead proxies all your traffic as if you were on a corporate LAN and having all traffic filtered via a regular HTTP proxy. It's a great alternative solution, using components from the Mozilla Project, and is available opensource as well.

Hopefully this clears up some confusion.

PROFINITE  On a G5 Tower running OS 10.5.8 and a Mac Pro running OS 10.6.1, CNN video and ACCU Weather video would not play if Safari AdBlock is on. The moment I disable Safari AdBlock and reload a page, videos at these sites play.

Has anyone encountered this phenomenon?

BOLLYWOOD  There is now a functioning 64bit SIMBL plugin build on GitHub, it works for some, not for others though. so if you're handy with XCode, d/l and build it yourself.

its working perfectly on my 13" MacBook Pro running 10.6.1

and my 15" MacBook Pro running 10.6.1

it is NOT working on my 13" running 10.5.8 however (but as 0.4rc3 still works, it shouldnt really matter)

Shame, I prefer this.

THEKIDFROMTHEREDBANK  It would be great, if Safari AdBlock had a feature to Import/Export custom filter-lists. I was using SafariBlock for years , but now I switched due to incompatibility with Snow Leapord. I'd love to import my manual filters but looking at SafariBlock, it doesn't seem to support exporting the data... Someone has to make start on this.

MONKEYJUNKEY  The new Safari AdBlocker 1.1 (which is a fork of the dead SafariBlock) has import AND EXPORT feature! Great, just what we all have been waiting for. Now it's easy to transfere personal block lists between several blockers (if only Safari AdBlock had an export feature itself. Can't be to hard to program, because the developer of Safari AdBlocker did it in one day just after the 1.0 release). Give it a try...

CALL ME YO DADDY  So far I am very impressed with this updated version of Safari Adblock. I've tried other ad blockers for Safari and for some reason or another I just ended up disabling them. However, this is the best one by far. I love the fact that with just one click after adding the "AD" button to Safari I can disable it if I find it is causing a conflict at a site.

It's pretty accurate in my limited testing. It uses the same filter list in Adblock Plus. I've only had to disable it at CNet's video page but doing so only required just one button click.

This makes using Safari much more attractive and enjoyable. Please don't ever stop the development of this plugin. :-)

XARIK  Just a heads-up:

Make sure to uninstall Safari AdBlock if you're planning to update to the latest version of Safari (v3.2.1, included in Software Update), because some kind of system conflict can cause all of your apps to crash at launch. If you're experiencing this, you will have to manually uninstall Safari AdBlock by deleting the Safari AdBlock folder in /Library/InputManagers/ This should restore everything to normal.

MICROCHASM  I've been using Safari AdBlock for about a year now. Even though the last version had to be disabled due to Safari issues, the new version (0.3.2) fixed any afari performance issues I encountered.

This is the best ad blocker for Safari that I have used so far (used Safari AdBlock & SafariBlock).

It works so well that I have to temporarily disable it sometimes when redirected to other sites. Small price to pay IMHO.

DETTO  Very nice plugin/application!

Blocks everything annoying so far automatically without even touching the manual list. But it's there too which is a big plus, and its pretty easy to add entries.

I miss a simple right click option on images/flash-banners though, for easier adding of unwanted things, but keep it simple as it is! SafariBlock and Saft both are too crowded for me.

SCHMELDING  Actually, this version isn't bug-free. When enabled, websites continually "load" -- the spinner keeps going even when the site appears to be fully loaded.

Also, it stops the Safari Tidy plugin from loading.

When I disable Safari AdBlock the Tidy plugin works, and sites load normally.

The last version was error-free for me.

Sorry about version 0.3.1 that made Safari unsuable. It has been fixed in 0.3.2.

JSLMG  With respect to Martin, yes, we'll report the problem to him directly, but the point of having user reviews is to warn people about problems with a given app, and MacUpdate *does* provide a "troubleshooting" option as well.

If you put problematic software on the web, in public, you should expect to be held accountable in public. If you try to direct users to only report problems to you directly, then there is a sense of self-protection there that does not suit the needs of the users' community very well.

It does take a bit of time to set it just the way you want it, but well worth the effort. Its $10 shareware fee is quite fair for the last word in ad blocking for Safari.

After noticing this it makes me wonder what other sites are not functioning as a result of this add on. For now I am going to uninstall and give the next version a try.

Note to developer: Why can't the user define what they would like to block as well? Also, it would be nice to see what is being blocked to prevent sites from not functioning properly. That way the user could allow something that shouldn't have been blocked and the add on can remember that.

IVANOVITCH  Great work. We now have a choice of adblockers for Safari. Whilst not as customisable as SafariBlock, it leaves the decision to block or not block to a list. Set and forget...

Incidentally, I have absolutely no issue with the principle of blocking annoying material from view. Others may believe that the world rotates around commerce and advertising, but some of us use the web for other purposes, and blocking advertisements is of little loss to the real world. The web won't disappear overnight if advertisements are blocked - contrary to some people's views. It happily ran for a number of years before the advertisers moved in.

CHRISTOPHER PRICE  This plugin, similar to AdBlock Plus, hurts legitimate publishers. With a TV ad, you can ignore it... the network still gets paid. Use this plugin, and you're stealing content (web publishers don't get paid for ads you don't see).

I cannot urge you enough to avoid using this plugin. The more that do, the more draconian web publishers will have to get, and the worse your web experience will be.

DANA SUTTON  Your comment would be valid if Web advertisers woud adhere to a code of standards: no popup windows, no attention-distracting animation, no collection of information from the user's computer, and so forth. Maybe what some advertisers do is unethical (by somebody's reasonable standard of ethics), and a lot of it just plain crass. Of course responsible Web sites should not give space to such crap, but it's a sad fact of life that plenty do. So don't tell us poor end users that we don't have every right to defend ourselves against this crap. If this happens to hurt more responsible advertisers, your beef ought to be against your not-so-responsible colleagues, not against authors of software like this or the end users who decide to use them.

If you want people to stop blocking ads on your site, then tone them down to a level that doesn't detract from the user experience.

GREGORGY  Gotta agree with me mate from Oz - In South Africa, bandwidth is paid for by the megabyte. Each ad I block saves me just a little bit of time and money. Especially considering Flash ads can end up being a MB all on their own....

TXU  My first reaction is, "screw you". Just try and make me justify the software I choose to install on my own computer.

The more pragmatic part of me that kicks in later and a bit more thoughtfully says that hopefully the continued adoption and uptake in adblocking software will force advertisers to find a new, less intrusive way of advertising, because the current system is broken and out of control.

The tactics, technologies and methods used are now borrowed heavily from telemarketers, spammers, and indeed, scammers. I mean, explain to me how "You have won" in a web ad is not the same as "You have won" in an email. We are taught not to click the latter, but we are expected to allow the former into our browsers? I don't think so. Particularly when it is not unusual for admins to have no idea what type of ads are being pushed through their site (see: mininova.org). Ignorance is no excuse, however, and site admins wear the blame for annoying, intrusive and down-right malicious ads, and they pay the penalty by being consciously blocked. Consider it a method of consumer-choice in advertising.

Spammers ruin our email experience, and the current approach to web advertising ruins our web experience. As much as I am able, I will not allow either into my computer.

Find a new way.

INDIEKIDUK  the 0.2 dmg fails to mount so I couldn't compare it to pithhelmet. What I wanted to check is if this can allow flash video sites to work properly. With pithhelmet installed on certain sites I need to add filters to get videos to play. e.g.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  As it states in boldface on the MacUpdate page for this app:

"If your downloaded file has a .bz2 suffix on the end of the filename, you must remove that .bz2 suffix and then the .dmg will mount properly."

INDIEKIDUK  Oops missed that. Hope he can fix that soon so other people don't just dismiss this app.

Heres what I experienced:

Doesn't block enough banner ads.

Doesn't block sponser videos on: http://www.thestreet.com/_tscnav/video/index.html

Sometimes the ad flashes up and then vanishes: http://www.theregister.co.uk/

PROFINITE  When Pithhelmet became incompatible with Leopard when the new OS was released, out of desperation, I found Safari AdBlock.

I must say that Safari AdBlock has worked to my satisfaction.

Certainly, Pithhelmet has more parameters that you can adjust. But, the simplicity and effectiveness of Safari AdBlock is impressive. Plus, it is FREE.

Now that Pithhelmet 2.8 has been released for Leopard, I disabled Safari AdBlock and tried Pithhelmet for a few minutes. Then, I immediately went back to Safari AdBlock.

SIXER ___2  This app blocks the Google Analytics javascript, which kind of sucks. Google Analytics doesn't bother users in any way and hurts statistics for Web developers.

JOSHP  I really don't understand all the positive feedback. The application doesn't seem to work very well, as it seems to be missing Amazon ads and Google ads, the two most common I see everday. I couldn't even tell if it was working for the first couple hours I had it installed, because it does such a poor job at blocking anything. Furthermore, there is no contextual menu to block ads. There is no option to edit the filters. I don't even know what it is filtering. There is no way to subscribe to a list of filers like AdBlock for Firefox does. The built-in blocker in Camino is ten times better than this almost non-existent filter. Why is it so hard to create an ad-blocking approach to Safari that updates its filters via subscription like AdBlock for Firefox? Every ad-blocker on Safari for Tiger and Leopard is a pain to use, inadequate for the job, and shows no sign of improvement. I only hope that since this is only a 0.1 that it will improve somewhat, but I am not holding my breath.

F451  This works well for me. I am waiting for PithHelmet to be updated, but during the interim this covers virtually everything on the many sites I frequent. I found one small ad that made it through on Gizmag. That's it.

I am the developer of Safari AdBlock. Thank you for your comment, comments allow me to make future versions better.

Safari AdBlock 0.1 is the very first version. I don't claim that all ads are blocked, but many, many ads are blocked. Of course, I'll fine-tune the blocking process as versions are released and as I get feedback.

As for additionnal features, they'll come. I just wanted to release a first version quickly.

Please understand that I need you to be more specific on what is not blocked by Safari AdBlock. Just saying 'it does such a poor job at blocking anything' doesn't help me to improve it. If you really want a good ad blocker for Safari, you need to give useful feedback.

For a start, could you please give me a specific URL on which an Amazon ad is not blocked so that I can see why it is not blocked?

Thanks,

Martin.

PS: please contact me by mail, you'll find my address on the homepage (http://safariadblock.sf.net).

F451  This works, and it works very well. Pages load quickly, much quicker than some of the other applications out there touting ad blocking as a feature. It catches pretty much all the ads with a few exceptions, and revised ad blocking list can be automatically uploaded. I wasn't expecting much, but was I pleasantly surprised; great job on the developer's part!
