SJK  Hopefully Screenflick's development pace will pick up again soon, like Screenium's recently has.

MRCHIPS  This is an excellent screen capture/record app with an active, engaged developer. The GUI is intuitive and offers many options. The recorded screen cast is of high quality.

I made a simple tutorial video including system and microphone audio which lasted 4:20 minutes and the .mov file was only 52 MB - and this was with a full-screen capture of 1920x1200 pixels! Screenflick supports multiple monitors (record on one monitor while reading your tutorial "notes" on the other), can hide your desktop, and will use a custom background if you want.

Recordings are automatically saved in full-resolution, but you can specify compression, quality, etc, for the .mov file you output. This is similar to the way Screenflow works and is a wonderful feature.

The developer has indicated more features will be added after the new year. I can't wait! :)

All-in-all a terrific value!

GCOGHILL  Two things that have kept me from purchasing a license:

• The on-screen keyboard input indication does not show modifier keys alone, only if they are used in conjunction with another keystroke (letter, number, etc.)

• The mouse-follow mode needs a slight tweak, as I have mentioned before: I would like to be able to set a mouse-follow area, and then separately set the capture area and be able to toggle between the two. As it stands now, when setting the mouse-follow area and then toggling to fixed mode, it uses the area dimensions set for the mouse-follow for fixed mode.

I would prefer that the non-mouse-follow mode be able to be set separately so for example I could set the capture area to full screen or some other large setting, and then be able to toggle to a user-specified zoomed/close-up view that follows the mouse.

I want to screen-capture graphics software, and both of these features are integral.

Otherwise this app is perfect. Lots of great included features, looks sharp and generates great videos/audio. I dropped the developer an email to see if/when these features might be implemented, still waiting to hear back.

GCOGHILL  I just heard back from the developer and both features were said to be on the short list for inclusion, thought I would update this for anyone also looking for those features.

KLAGRECA  It's slightly more expensive than other video capture software I looked at, but I was sold on their UI. And after purchase and getting to use Screenflick, I was happy I spent the extra denario. Works great, looks great, and produces professional vids.

I had one question which I emailed and got back a full and helpful response.

I highly recc. Screenflick.

EVERYDAY SOFTWARE  Does what it advertises in a straight forward and simple way. Besides some basic editing options (which I currently do in iMovie), I couldn't really ask for more.

JOBBY  It won't let me record an area on any monitor other than the main one, either in fixed camera mode or follow-mouse mode (the viewport just bangs up against the edge of the screen and tries to stay as close to the pointer as it can)

Are there any plans for dual-monitor support in a future version?

GCOGHILL  To clarify my previous comment: the "follow mouse" mode needs to be able to be toggled as you are capturing; some times you want the whole screen, sometimes you want it to follow.

The right & left mouse click indicators looked the same to me on this version.

WOLFEATSWORLD  Do you think perhaps, you being with either very limited (or NO commerical overhead), that $30 is a tad much for this simple utility?

You software developers, in numbers much to large, need to to get some control on your greed.

Oh, I mean that; and I know many others will agree with me.

If you want to be sucessful in this business, and not just another Johnny-Come-Lately, who leaves us quickly, adjust your prices to reflect the market place, especially considering you are NOT a commerical developer, with that kind of cost overhead.

Brother.....get real real, not only with us-but with yourself.

SJK  Is harshly ranting your opinions about this product's pricing really a way to make a convincing argument?

Are you an independent Mac developer?

HENRIKTEKNIK  I disagree with you here, wolfeatsworld.

There are situations where some developers have gone too far in their pricing plans, but in this case I see no reason for you're saying, at all. 30 bucks is fair and square for an app like this. And remember, a lot of their customers will probably intend to use it in order to make money on their screencasts.

GCOGHILL  If one compares other screen capture utilities, the pricing is fair and this app is the most OS X-ish of them all.

If you compare in general to shareware apps in general, the pricing is again fair.

Not sure what the big deal is here on the pricing.

GCOGHILL  Seems like a cool app, only briefly demoed but noticed two features that are missing already: need a way to toggle fixed capture mode and "mouse follow" mode; also need a way to preview or view captured vids in the app itself.

I had a glitch on the only capture I did where the video didn't show up until I ran my mouse around the screen cap area, but once it kicked in all worked fine. Didn't notice this until after the movie was generated.

BITURBO27T  Great to see some more competition in this type of utility. Love the ability to visually show when mouse clicks are made. Would like some additional "effects" for this, as well as an option to automatically insert in the audio a mouse "click" sound. Price is a bit steep compared to other similar utilities, but I'd say this is a nice little screen capture app that I'll be keeping an eye on.

SJK  Price ($29) is steep compared to… $69 for Snapz Pro X (with move capture)? Sure, iShowU is $20 but the $10 difference doesn't make Screencast seem "steep" in comparison.

SJK  So, what "similar utilities" are you comparing Screencast to?

BITURBO27T  In particular, I was comparing to iShowU and Snapz Pro X. iShowU is 67% the cost of Screencast, and Snapz does screen captures as well as movies. In addition, both have been around for quite a while, and are mature and stable. It's just my opinion that a v1.0 product that provides little more functionality than say iShowU, doesn't justify a 33% premium. Again, I'm excited to see another app in this space, but don't see at this stage of the app, the value of it at that price. As it matures, I might change my mind. Not dissing the program at all, just the pricing. ;)

SJK  Thanks for the response and explanation.

I'm most curious how Screencast (btw, poor product name choice, IMO) compares with iShowU because Snapz Pro X is beyond by current budget/needs. Kind of wish I'd bought iShowU earlier even if Screencast ends up being a superior product because now I'm tempted to wait longer and see how they both evolve and compete with each other. I want a more compelling reason to pay $10 more for Screencast than just betting on its potential to eventually be a better choice for me than iShowU would be right now. From your comments (including the steep price remark) it sounds like I may not find that reason with Screencast v1.0 though I'll test it anyway and make up my own mind.

Unless it's free it's getting harder to find any product reviews/comments where someone doesn't eventually diss the pricing. ;)
