T0RUS Good client, nice screen zooming optoin, has most of the needed features. -color depth cannot go to less than 16 bit (some slower connections require 64 colors like UltraVNC provides) -no option to enable scroll bars Bug: cannot switch keyboard layout (e.g. i have spanish layout on my mac, but when in JVNC i can only use english layout in the program - won't let me switch to any other, i tried adding greek, french - no luck) (Version 0.98.50)

SANTEGO Have been using this to access Ubuntu's "Remote Desktop" over the web. Works excellent, very fast, and desktop scales to the screen size nicely. Had to disable "extra visual effects" in Ubuntu for redraws to act properly, but this is a Linux issue not a Jolly issue. (Version 0.98.50)

RIPPYZ I used to use Chicken of the VNC and although it worked, it does not refresh unless the app is active, and even when it is active, the refresh is choppy. I set out the find a different VNC client and gave JollyFastVNC a shot. It is easier to set up then Chicken and has faster refresh rate. I also like the new icon, the lens inside the telescope shows the current desktop pic and will update accordingly if you set your desktop pic to change. Great attention to detail. Since I have just one other computer to connect to at home, I would like to be able to either reduce the server list window, or close it entirely and establish connection via the contextual menu for the dock icon. Although the app is pretty awesome as is now. (Version 0.98.50)

GIRAFFE6044 This is defiantly the best VNC client for Mac. The reverse vnc support is perfect for helping mom fix her computer (without having to spend an hour walking her through opening ports in her router). Only request i would have is for a quick connection option. so i dont have to create a profile to access a server each and every time. just a simple entry field where i can type in address:port and hit enter to connect. WARD I used Chicken of the VNC for a long time ... until I started experiencing chronic dropped connections, sometimes after 5 minutes, usually after 15-20 minutes. My search last December for an alternative led me to JollysFastVNC. What a dramatic improvement! I don't recall a single dropped connection since then. The few times I've corresponded with Jolly (aka Patrick), he's very quick with a helpful response. For example, I just asked about Snow Leopard compatibility, and he responded with good news ("It is compatible.") before I had time to get a fresh cup of coffee. (Version 0.98.44)

E_COMMERCE Odd - when I connect to a computer with fullscreen as the default, the mouse position is incorrect (mouse is actually off on upper right, Jolly has it at lower left, for instance). Leaving fullscreen fixes it, and switching back to fullscreen remains fixed. However, logging in directly to fullscreen will always mess up the mouse position. It's almost like it's not adjusting the initial mouse position on the server end to match where it is on the client end (but this is just a guess). This has happened for the last several mini updates; I'm not sure when exactly it began. :( (Version 0.98.18)

ROBACKJA Both 0.96.90 and 0.96.92 are slow and unusable compared to 0.96.86. The network transfers alone are went from 30kb/s to 300kb/s (using tight encoding). I wish I could go back to old version. ESPIRIT For me this is superior to Leopard's built-in VNC client simply because I have machines that cannot run Leopard. For example, I am typing this review out on a 500MHz Pismo from around 2000 which I have setup with Tiger, and it still runs beautifully. For computers such as this, JollysFastVNC is without a doubt the best free option available. Its lightweight and efficient enough to even be run on a machine as old as this one. On my Leopard boxes I do use the built-in VNC client, but for all of my G3s and G4s running Tiger, this is the way to go. (Version 0.96.82)

E_COMMERCE In a nutshell - SSH tunneling does work after all, but the program seems to be doing something odd with caching screen sizes. At least, that's how it looks here. All this time I thought SSH tunneling was broken (see my various posts here if you care). It turns out there is a bug, but it's something else entirely. I downloaded the most recent version, saw the same behavior and was set to create another screen shot to illustrate. However, the stretched screen of my destination computer was in the way, so I changed it to "half size" - and the aspect ratio and size were fixed! I changed it back to full size, and now it snapped to the correct size (1024x768). All further connections to that computer have been correct ever since. Somehow it was picking up my local resolution (1440x900) from somewhere (a previous connection to something else?), which was not correct for what it was connecting to at the moment. I'd like to say this is closed, but when I attempted to connect to a different VNC host (1400x1050) over the same tunnel, a similar scaling type of bug reappeared when the destination screen was set to "Actual Size", but strangely not when set to "Half Size" or "Double Size". Looks like something odd is going on with how the screen size is being handled. (Version 0.96.62)

E_COMMERCE No, it most certainly does not. I've posted before on this, and provided an absurdly simple example. For a simple case, assume the local computer has no VNC servers running, and is a larger screen resolution than the remote server. ssh -L 5900:127.0.0.1:5900 myremoteserver Connecting with JFVNC to localhost 5900 will yield a window the size of the LOCAL screen, with the server's screen stretched to fit. This has been ongoing for months. I've deleted prefs files, shut down every VNC server on my network except the one in question, and it still fails miserably. Every other client (Mac, Windows, and even Palm) works perfectly. Only JFVNC fails. (Version 0.96.56 (1994))
| Sep 24 2008 |
E_COMMERCE SSH tunneling still doesn't work. Even the simplest possible test case screws up the resolution. Every other client works (Chicken, Screen Sharing, UltraVNC, MicroVNC, etc). Still want to use this, but still can't. (Version 0.96.50 (1932))

E_COMMERCE After all this time it still doesn't support tunneled SSH connections properly. For instance: Local: MacBook Pro, 1440x900 Remote: Mac Mini, 1024x768 ssh -L 5902:127.0.0.1:5900 mini This will tunnel any request for port 5902 on the local machine to the remote mini over SSH (I use 5902 because I already have VNC servers running locally on 5900 and 5901). When I use JFVNC to connect, I get the picture of the remote system in a window the size of the local system. No other VNC client does this on any platform I've used (Ubuntu, UltraVNC, Palm microVNC, Apple's Screen Sharing, Chicken, etc). Reported for the last six months at least, no progress. DRADY E_Commerce: are you saying that JFVNC doesn't support tunneling by calling 'ssh -L ...' internally or that it does not support communication across an externally established tunnel? thanks. (Version 0.96.32)
| Jun 26 2008 |
E_COMMERCE It doesn't support it over an externally created tunnel. I don't see any built-in functionality for creating SSH tunnels in JFVNC. Also, I've since seen this same behavior when connecting to UltraVNC on my Thinkpad, without an SSH tunnel. The screen shows up, but stretched to the size of the host machine. This unfortunately makes this software completely useless for me. (Version 0.96.36)

MUMUNOL What you call a loop is *natural* : if you get connected to your screen you are asking for displaying your screen in a window that is displaying your screen displaying your window that is displaying your screen displaying your window displaying your screen... This is not a bug this is like you being between two mirors. Try displaying a screen displaying something else than your screen and you will see that everything is fine !

SJHA Yes, I see that you are correct. Chicken of the VNC displays the same behaviour. (Version 0.96.16)

ERICOB I don't think this is a "loop," I think it is infinite recursion. A result can be technically correct, but still be *incorrect* as far as product usability is concerned. If the result of requesting a VNC connection to the same computer that the request comes from can never be completed, I consider that allowing that IS a bug. (Version 0.96.16)

QUAYDVT I work with an iMac and a mini and have networked them via firewire. Using the remote desktop in Tiger and Chicken, I was really pleased to see that I could probably lose the extra monitor for the mini - but I do video on the mini and found that the lag and frame drop was HUGE. I found JollysFast and tried it - monumental difference! The lag is minimal even while capturing and I can do the final editing on the captured clips that wasn't possible with Chicken due to the dramatic frame dropping and lag. I am still a relative newbie to the mac, but for my money, JollysFast has it hands-down over Chicken, at least using the remote-desktop included with Tiger (Version 0.96.12)

BCREIGHTON I just downloaded JollysFastVNC onto my powerpc g4 laptop, the 96.10 version. I've installed it, but when I click on it, the program almost immediately crashes, maybe 1 second. I tried the 96.8 version, same thing. I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. Anyone have any ideas? (Version 0.96.10)

CARMENM Hi, i just downloaded the latest version but it didnt work with my server when cotVNC does. my server is using the port 2900 The server type is set to other and my server has The real problem is that i cant see the error message as disappear as soon as it appeared. Could we have a log window? This would be a great addition in order to "debug" connection problems Anyway i hope i ll manage to have it work as i like jollyfastvnc a lot. Thanks for your work (Version 0.96.10)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK In the Console all messages are logged. Open up Console.app ( /Applications/Utitlites ) and tell me what happens. My email is in the 'About...' panel. (Version 0.96.10)

CARMENM I now tried with the console on, and here is the error message 2/18/08 9:15:46 AM JollysFastVNC[47394] VNCClient connectWithSocket: Caught ConnectionException: VNCClient start: major protocol version error (Version 0.96.12)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK Ah, that's a good one. Which server are you using as it seems to be different. Can you e-mail me ? This way support is faster as I' m not reading macupdate all the time. Regards - Patrick aka Jolly (Version 0.96.12)

MAKETSO Via JollysFastVNC, I'm *finally* able to connect to my father's PC remotely (very cool)...something that CotVNC would never seem to do (always timed-out first). CotVNC is relatively quick on my home LAN connecting to PCs. I'm quite sure it is something I haven't gotten configured correctly, but JollysFastVNC (v0.96.6 & prior) is quite a bit slower in updating my Intel MacBook Pro screen. From a previous post, I tried connecting to the ethernet-connected PC next to my MacBook via the 192.168... address, but is is equally slow. Any thoughts on what I can do to get to the point of realizing speed that the others enjoy? Using HamachiX (v0.9 1B3 24) and OSXvnc (v1.71) in Mac OS 10.4.11. CotVNC is v2.0b2. (Version 0.96.6)

MAKETSO PS. I have the window displaying in 50% size. I haven't been able to get anything but a white screen displayed in 100% size. The "server type" is set to "Other" for each PC, and the "Color Depth" is set to "16 bit". Everything else is "Default". PSS. When first logging-in to any of the PCs (local or remote), it takes several minutes to get a screen image displayed. On the RealVNC server running on each PC, I have removed the wallpaper & background patterns. (Version 0.96.6)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK Try a different VNC server. I'm using ultravnc and tightvnc on windows with very good performance. Some vnc servers are just not capable of handling the requests jollysfastvnc asks them for. Then those SERVERS are SLOW as they don't handle the requests correctly internaly. If JollysFast is slower than any other client on the mac I'm pretty sure that it's the server. Drop me a mail and is can figure that one out.

MAKETSO Hi Patrick...and, Happy New Year! Thank you for both of your replies, as well as for your invitation to continue troubleshooting. I'll track down your email address and explore a solution with you a bit more...thank you. I should have mentioned that I did already have the Server Type configured as "Other". Can JollyFastVNC run as a server on a PC? Thanks again, Maketso (Version 0.96.6)

VERRAMI I installed JollysFastVNC and VNC viewer on my mac book pro today. JolleysfastVNC is definitely quicker in terms of performance it has some elements missing (for e.g., I am unable to use right-click options when I connect to the linux server). I tried all keyboard options and non of em let me use the right click options. overall performance is good. (Version 0.96.4)

BEESHARP Not sure if it's just my set up but JollysFast takes a lot longer to login on my LAN. CotVNC takes just a few seconds via Bonjour. JollysFast several minutes as it appears to use my DynDNS account even though Bonjour is available. Once logged in I prefer JollysFast–mainly because of the fit to screen feature. Thanks Patrick for all of your efforts! (Version 0.96.4)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK Did you try setting up a new connection just with the ipaddress to figure out what's going on ? JollysFastVNC trys the servers in the order that is shown in the address field. If the first one is a name that can't be resolved it will then try the second one and so forth. Regards - Jolly aka Patrick (Version 0.96.4)
| Nov 24 2007 |
BEESHARP That did it! All is well now. I guess this is a feature request that I'd ask for as I didn't have to set up CotVNC to do this. Thanks for for the prompt reply. Very much appreciated. (Version 0.96.4)

HAHAD Thanks a lot for a very interesting alternative in the VNC viewer field. With every update I use it more and more. There is just one issue which keeps me from switching over completely: support for a right mouse click to bring up the contextual menu. Or am I missing any setting there? Also for the more distant future a listening option would be great to allow server connections from machines which are behind a firewall without the proper port open. Keep up the great work. JOLLY AKA PATRICK does the 'keyboard layout' setting of 'other' not work ? That changes the use of the 2nd. and 3rd. button. ( maybe I should name it ARD vs. other ) Patrick aka Jolly (Version 0.94b)
| Oct 21 2007 |
HAHAD Thanks for your reply Patrick. Under the 'keyboard layout' I only found the options for 'Remote' and 'Invasive'. Since you mentioned 'other' I had a play around with the 'Server Type' setting, and setting that from 'Mac' to 'Other' makes the right mouse button work fine :) only problem for me now is that the 'ALT' and 'Command' keys are swapped over :( Being able to use the correct modifier keys AND the right mouse button at the same time would be really great. Thanks for listening. (Version 0.94b)

SIMON PRIDE I have the same issue as Alan (in fact I mentioned it to him a while ago). Server: Mac Mini (Intel) 1.66 GHz VNC Server is Apple Remote Desktop Interface is wired ethernet 100 Mb/s After a few minutes' use, the server's network interface will stop working and cannot be used. Nothing is shown in the console log. (Version 0.94b)

ALANFLEMING Very nice - but it reliably kills the interface to which I'm connecting after a while. Duplicated this on two servers - if I use them via Jollys for an extended period, they drop off the network and need rebooting. Once this bug is got out, I'll definitely recommend it, but until then I have to stick with Chicken of the VNC :( (Version 0.94b)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK When the servers crash it's probably no JFVNC's fault, more a problem on the server side as JFVNC just asks for updates. Can you send me a mail which servers you are using ? Thanx in advance Jolly (Version 0.94b)

HB.DESIATO The preference setting "Check for Updates on launch" doesn't work - the code seems to be overriding it. I don't want this app "phoning home" every time I launch it. (Version 0.94)

COOLFACTOR Thanks for responding so quickly to my last question, Jolly. I tried using JollysFastVNC to connect to a VNC server over the Internet, but it didn't work. It has only worked on a machine on the same subnet. It did ask for the password, but then nothing happened. Is this a known issue? (Version 0.92)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK nope, that is not known. It normally works. It is known though that some servers can't cope with the update requests they are getting. Send me an e-mail as I do not look here in regular intervals. Regards - Jolly aka Patrick (Version 0.92)

COOLFACTOR I've just successfully connected to another Mac and this client is nice and fast. I would like to know why it's called "Jollys Fast" rather than "Jolly Fast"... why the extra "s" on the end of "Jolly"? Signed, nitpicker (Version 0.92)

JOBBY Please could we have the "fullscreen" command NOT be Cmd-F? It's very annoying when you're trying to use "find" on the remote machine :) (And is there any way to get the remote Mac to let me have a screen resolution of higher than 1024x768, or is it just restricting me to what the physical monitor is capable of? It feels insanely cramped, and I can't find a way to increase it...) (Version 0.88a)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK It's an alpha and those features will come. Right now you can however use OS X 's capability of remapping the keys to whatever you like. So YOU CAN REMAP it to CMD-SHIFT-F if you like.

E_COMMERCE Decided to check this out after seeing all of the hype. Indeed, the speed is simply amazing. On my local LAN I can just about watch video over this. However, there's still a LOT to do on the interface. A few recommendations: - Move "Host Type", "Keyboard Layout", and "Connect" to the drawer - they're certainly not the primary settings, and likely don't need to be changed often. - Since the default values are so well set (very few programs do this well - bravo!), show the connection name, server address, and port in the columns. That way someone could complete basic setup of a connection without ever opening the drawer. - Remove all key commands in the program; they will conflict with those in the VNC window for Mac clients. Command-W has hit me a few times. - Remove the Help menu, or add some help. - General polish - things like the icon, buttons in the main window not matching usual interface design, and the OK buttons being "Ok" and shrunken. For the Transport Encoding Order, move "Use" column to the left side and remove the title (it's redundant) to match standard UI. (Version 0.86a)

JOLLY AKA PATRICK definition ? Currently JollysFastVNC scales the remote desktop to the size you choose by resizing the window . CMD -1 will set it to 1:1 resolution. CMD-0 to 2:1 and CMD-2 to 1:2 Bonjour annouced servers will automatically beeing shown (and autoconnected if you want).

NEIL_M What I mean by definition is sharpness/clarity of the icons and text on the remote machine. Jolly is much faster and that more than compensates for the difference. (Version 0.88a)

NEIL_M Tried side-by-side with Chicken and Jolly is faster, that's running it through a VPN. I do notice that Chicken has better definition, but I think that's the compression and settings - which makes me wonder it tweaking Chicken might achieve similar results. I like Chicken's ability to auto-display bonjour hosts in the side list. Having the choice of 2 free-quality-VNC clients for Mac is most welcome. (Version 0.86a)

GAOSHAN Perhaps there is something "off" with my setup but Jolly doesn't seem any faster than Chicken on my machine. I'm running the server on a 867mhz PowerMac G4, the client on a 1.2Ghz iBook G4 and the network is my wireless LAN. Running Jolly in a small window versus Chicken in a much larger window they both appear equally slow. Perhaps my setup has something to do with it? Jolly is perfectly good but to my eye it is no better than Chicken of the VNC. (Version 0.86a)

SMORR Wow! The speed is pretty incredible -- all this time, I thought the slowness of VNC in CotV was due to network bandwidth issue. JFVNC proves this completely wrong. -- That the client is the bottleneck and not the network is a revelation. (Version 0.84a)
