ANONYMOUS Not it doesn't add any functionality to Quicktime Player. This little app adds only icons for the filetypes for wich is necessary perian to play with QT (this is done patching Info.plist of QuickTime Player.app). Since Perian adds only support for decoding formats, I've decided to give these files a nice icon, instead of the default blank one. If you don't use QuickTime Player and/or Perian to watch your movies, you don't need this app. (Version 2.4.3_TigerFixed)
| Mar 5 2009 |
LEOPOLDBLOOM It's not really clear what you're asking. Like the developer said, Perian's Type Installer doesn't add any functionality to QT. But, if you're using QT (including Pro), Perian _does_ add functionality. QT Pro has many more options for converting, exporting, etc. than the regular version, but it still suffers from the same codec limitations. Perian solves this for you by adding a large variety of codecs to QT's library, making it a VLC-like media player that will handle just about any file format or codec you throw at it. Perian's type installer simply allows your computer to recognize file types that QT doesn't support by default as QT files. For example, if you have an MKV file and it's set to open with QT (which will play it with Perian installed), it will still be described as a UNIX Executable file in the Finder because it's not a supported format by default. Perian's Type Installer causes files like this to be properly recognized and labelled as QT files. (Version 2.4.3_TigerFixed)

FILMGIRL Well, since I do have Perian installed - I thought perhaps this would work. As it stands, MKV plays sans audio in QT. If the problem is that the Perian plugin isn't compatible with MKV, then why is this add-on changing the icon type? It becomes confusing because I was under the impression this was released by people affiliated with Perian - if it's just some dude's custom Apple Script, that should be more clear. (Version 2.4.2)

FOLLEREC To make it work with Leopard, just do the normal patch through the interface. Then when you're done and you've closed the program, open a Terminal and run this (it's all in one line, no quotes): "/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -f /Applications/QuickTime\ Player.app/" If you're curious, the command above is mentioned here: http://trac.perian.org/ticket/163 Note that I haven't actually tested it yet. But logically it should work since it's just specifying the correct patch to lsregister. (Version 2.3)

LYCESTRA Why not do what Flip4Mac does with their WMV plugin: make a new application that has all the type information, file assocations, and icons so that you get the icon and double-click open. That new application serves only as proxy, so when that app "opens" an mkv file (or whatever it may be), it actually just tells QuickTime Player to open it instead, and exits. That way you aren't modifying applications already on the system, just plugging in a contained add-on. (Version 2.1)

GANNET Because then you have to keep this stupid little extra app sitting around. Nothing wrong with patching QT in this way, it's completely harmless and much nicer. (Version 2.1)
| Jul 6 2007 |
AMAKE But doesn't this solution require you to re-patch QuickTime Player every time Apple pushes an update to QuickTime? I'd rather have a stupid helper app sitting around than have to reapply this every time. (Version 2.2)
| Jul 7 2007 |
GANNET Depends if the update updates QT Player or just QT. Hm, maybe a helper app wouldn't be so bad. But I'd want it to be just one app, ie include WMV and anything else that might be useful. Perhaps opening the app could display preferences allowing you to enable/disable individual file types. (Version 2.2)
| Jul 7 2007 |
LYCESTRA you don't need preferences in the app. Mac OS X already handles the case where multiple apps will open the same file. You configure it by "show info" on any such file you want it to open, "Open with..." tab. And you can change it for just the single file, or all at once. And the application that will open it is the one that determines the icon. I actually hacked one together by copying "WMV Player", changing references of WMV Player to Perian Player in file names and the PLists (so it isn't confused as another WMV Player, but is seperate new app), changing the file assocations from WM to those in the script here, and replacing icons with Perian's and the icons in this. Of course, I'm not about to distribute it. The copyright issues with Flip4mac as well as this script are all over. But it works perfectly as I'd expect it to since the binary for it just forwards to quicktime, and the plist now tells that binary (and Finder) it will open the Perian file types. And of course, you would only need one app, but each file type is handled individually in the Finder's "open as" deal. (Version 2.2)
| Jul 7 2007 |
GANNET Yeah, I was just thinking if the user didn't have the relevant codecs installed but I guess it wouldn't really matter. (Version 2.2)

JOHN225 At the risk of seeming obtuse, could someone please explain the purpose of this or how this differs from or enhances Perian. Reading the script's description seems to suggest that it does the same thing as Perian. RUNAWAY The purpose of this script is simple: if you have Perian installed and have associated flv files (for example) to QuickTime you can watch them, but because QuickTime wasn't born to play them, the files doesn't have an icon. This script patches the Info.plist file of QuickTime to automatically associate certain files to QuickTime and add correct icons for them. (In os x every application declares which file can open/play/edit and LaunchServices receive this declaration.) (Version 1.0.4)

BRUCE_Y This would be good to add to a little ReadMe text file along with the "PerianAddFile.app" script itself. Especially the part about needing to have Perian on the computer in order for the script to be useful -- since, in some cases, people may be using different apps to play those other file types.
| Jul 2 2007 |
D-MAC Actually, QT plugins should contain the info about supported file formats, etc. QT Player (or the entire QT framework) should "take note" of the file formats and filename extensions supported by any plugin loaded at startup, making this kind of hack unnecessary. The Perian developers should look into this... (Version 1.0.5)
| Jul 3 2007 |
GANNET No, I think you're missing what the hack is actually doing. It has nothing to do with the QuickTime engine, only QuickTime Player.app. It's main purpose is simply to allow file types such as flv to show a nice QuickTime flv icon on them which it otherwise can't do because the icons don't exist. Yeah, it also let's the files be associated with QuickTime easily but you can do that anyway. (Version 1.0.5)

JAYHD This script is pretty useful, but I can't help but wonder why you are using a third party plist app to add the changes. I've made some changes to the script so that it does not require PlistBuddy. All operations can be done with shell commands, also run faster that way. I've also implemented a way to remove any changes this script installs without modifying the rest of the plist. email me: ccruzmail [at] gmail [dot] com (Version 1.0.2)

MR MIDNIGHT Nice! After running the Applescript, the Finder recognizes .flv and .wmv files as Quicktimefiles, and gives them the correct icon, instead of a blank icon. Restarts the finder after applying its changes, which some people may prefer to do manually, but otherwise quite good. Just deduct one star because it should let you know what it will do before it does it, and allow you the option to cancel, but that's nitpicking. (Version 1.0)
