UNCOY Cog is great but stopped working on me. Tried Vox, Taply and Play. Vox and Taply had very high CPU usage in background when not running. Vox was running at over 3%. Looks awfully good. Unfortunately the playlist is a bit of a pain to manage in comparison to Cog or Play. Play is a bit ugly but uses .1% CPU in the background. Which one you choose is a question of looks. ANJ I like the equalizer, which Cog doesn't seem to have. The interface is really nice. However, it won't scrobble on Last.fm for me. Maybe it'll work when I restart my computer? As mentioned before, it would be even better if playlists could be created. (Version 0.2.6)

MWSCHMEER Out of all the many iTunes alternatives out there, this one takes the cake. It's small footprint, extended feature set, and gorgeous HUD-styled interface makes Vox hard to beat. While it lacks a "saved playlist" feature, it's main draw is the ability to drop a folder of files on the icon and have them start playing them either in order of the file name or in shuffle mode. It's real boon is the ability to quickly play a downloaded mp3 file (although it can play most other sound formats supported by QuickTime). It's been rock-solid on my machines--an Intel Core Duo iMac, and a G4 Gigabit Ethernet, both running 10.4.11. This is definitely an application that is a must on my systems. I can't wait to see what the developer does in future builds. (Version 0.2.6)

BEAMY This is great music player. It is easy to use and has a nice simple interface. I use it now more often than iTunes. I hope that a playlist feature will be implemented in a future version.

HALEAKALARI as a cog user who prefers tiger over leopard (i have a leopard box, but still find myself on tiger 90% of the time), i had been toying around with songbird [for its m4a/aac metadata support, which cog lacks on tiger and integrated last.fm scrobbling], but i hate the "media library" concept. still, songbird is nice and all, but along with its obscenely high resource consumption, some extensions will irreparably "muck up" prefs.js and the xul overlay/chrome files. besides, what i was really looking for was sort of a companion to cog, not a full blown media library, tag editor and web browser mash-up, just something that supports all/most of the file types cog does while filling in some of the gaps. vox fits this niche very nicely and [amongst a few other things] even ads in an equalizer, audio effects, transcoding, album artwork support and integrated last.fm scrobbling (cog requires one to utilize the official last.fm client). last but not least, it's just as "gentle" with my system as cog is. of-course on my leopard box, i'll probably just be using the 10.5 only builds of cog, but for now, vox completes my audio player arsenal on tiger... the only thing i'm missing is a drag & drop playlist interface [and ideally, a directory browser to compliment that]. otherwise [aside from some very minor glitches] this is an outstanding up & coming player with great potential. i'm very interested to see where the developer will be taking this application further down the line. SWISSROLL I downloaded this app as VLC cut off the beginning of each .ogg file I tried to play. Vox does not cut off anything and does more to boot. Intrigued by the fun look, stability and lightness of Vox I am trying to find excuses to use it. So now often I keep audio files in a folder on my desktop instead of dumping everything in iTunes. But man, iTunes reminds me of the Mafia, I try to get out but it pulls me back in. Darn it. I wish there was some kind of connection possible between Vox and iTunes library and playlists etc. That would be great. Well done on making this fine application. I deserves a donation. TEKL Please don't make it such a big thing like iTunes. Don't include a library. The playlist support could be enhanced to show a list. It should be hideable like the new info button. - SID file support (using the libsidplay2/reSID engine) - Embedding the Equalizer settings into the file (using hfs extenden attributes or the spotlight comment?) - Drag'n'Drop support from iTunes to Vox (Cog show, that's possible) - Global hotkeys to skip songs (Version 0.2.6)

BRUMM Sorry made a mistake, took the older 0.20 version for my comparison. RAM and CPU usage are BETTER then iTunes'. Great software, the best freeware I've seen so far, MANY thanks. Again sorry, I consider harakiri now... But at first my 5 stars to this app. Ah little popup menu showing the titles I've dropped on ToolPlayer, maybe popping up if I click on the titles name display, would be very fine. BRUMM RAM & CPU usage still nearly twice as much as iTunes, both compared without EQ or effects. But ToolPlayer supports many modern lossless sound formats, FLAC, etc., that Steve Jobs' iTunes still snootily declines. That's the big plus on independent software, mostly modern and forward looking, strive on progressiveness and quality products, - not solely money orientated. (Version 0.2.5)

ZC456 A great simple player for something that hasn't even hit 1.0. The look & feel to it is very different from a normal player. Its a little confusing at first but once you get the hang of it its pretty dang cool. I would like to see a playlist window added in the future. Then it will really take off in my opinion. So far my first impressions = awesome great start. (Version 0.2.5)

TOOLPLAYERFAN For everybody needing playlists: You can simply make smart folders that are built-in to Leopard. I have all my songs in a 'Tunes' smart folder under 'Music'. It filters all the music. You can make as many playlists as you want and even add any of them to the sidebar in finder windows. All that's missing is a shuffle option in ToolPlayer. (Version 0.2.5)

JAMES T. KIRKĀ© I hated that I could not play certain files (like Flac) out of the box in iTunes or QT. I missed a tool like WinAmp (windows) XMMS (linux) and certainly did not like MacAmp much, as it did not look like the first two. In this Tool Player I found that little freeware programme what even does do more than expected! And does it well! Thanks! (Version 0.2a)

SPDA242 When I switched to Mac from Linux there was one application I couldn't find a replacement for and that was XMMS (WinAmp), sure there was a few apps doing the same thing but they all had the wrong feel, was abandomed, had horrible gui or..... When I found ToolPlayer it was like early christmas, sure it was (still is) an early version which lacks lot of features but the author is working on them and 0.25 and l8er 0.3 promises alot. The reason I use ToolPlayer rather than iTunes and the others featurerich apps are that it is small, lightweight, have a slick gui and it lets me plays my music without any hassle. (Version 0.2a)

HENRIKTEKNIK Feature requests: 1.) Having it remember repeat mode after quitting and reopening the application. 2.) Like others already mentioned, a visible playlist. Loops audio perfectly glitch-free! As opposed to eg. Quicktime, which repeats loops with a horrible glitch. Ultra quick opening time of the app! The icon for repeat mode is very hard to see. Could be made more clear. Keep it up, dear developer! This is looking very promising! (Version 0.2)

CLAKES Ok, so I'm keeping myself from being enthusiast. As already said, this is one more than promising initial release plus surprisingly stable and affordable. Love the GUI (my OS is skinned in black), loved the way it starts reproduction in a flash (immediately replaced Taply for the purpose to me), and what to say about the effects? Simply brilliant! And I feel the export feature is going to be improved as well. Add windows position remembering and a some (hot?)keyboard shortcuts and you're done guys. Intercepted my dreams: keep the great job up and running! (Version 0.1)
