CRATER  Great stuff! It did take me a while to get everything set up and working but it syncs perfectly now.

I have 5 iCal calendars syncing with 5 google calendars. The issues I had were 'failing to create sync session' and inability to 'update google calendar' (or something like that).

Once I switched to normal syncing for all calendars and did the whole resetting thing (i.e reset iSync & gSync, log out and back in) it worked great. The was one problem in that resetting gSync does not seem to remove all of gsync's files from the hard drive, specifically files in ~/Library . I had to manually remove those to sort out the problems. All users should make sure to back up their calendars before messing around.

In general, this is a great app and once I've used the demo for long enough, my £10 will be on it's way. good work.

LOTUS49  I came looking for this because I was previously using gcaldaemon (which worked but was NOT easy to setup) and that doesn't work with Leopard. Spanning Sync is too expensive and I don't like the unnecessary use of an external server.

GSync did the trick for me. I haven't tested it extensively but it was easy to setup and seems to have synced my calendars properly. My tenner is on its way.

M CHANG  Running OS 10.4.10 (home) and 10.4.11 (work). Both systems are syncing quite happily with my Google Calendar. Program does what it's supposed to. There are some items that aren't explained in the Help (hence my 4 out of 5 rating).

DEBTMAN7  Well let me give a positive review here. I just tried the 1.1.2 release with leopard and so far with a few trials I am extremely happy. As long as it holds up and I don't encounter any problems, I'll be buying it.

Why? The alternative, Spanning Sync, costs 3 times as much. The free alternative, GCalDaemon, doesn't work with leopard and even if it did, it does not support subscribed private iCal's (i.e. my wife shared her calendar with me through google calendar, but GCalDaemon can't sync that). The free service plaxo can sync multiple calendars, but through my testing only syncs them with their own calendar and not with each other (so you can't sync iCal with google calendar, though you can sync them all with plaxo).

So far this one just worked. Can't beat that.

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  I think this review is a little harsh.... the Leopard release changed both Apple iCal and Apple Sync Services.

Also testing at large scale could only happen once Leopard shipped.

We try to support the best we can and we believe that the latest BETA has solved all issues with Leopard and duplicates.

VANILLAICEE  This is a horribly supported product which I recommend people not even try to run. If you chose to you will only be frustrated and end up beta testing software that should not be released to the public.

The current version (in Leopard) will duplicate your all day events and improperly handles sync conflicts. The developer does not seem to prioritize testing before releases. Unfortunately GCALDaemon is not 100% in Leopard so I can't recommend that instead, but this program is not a solution for bidirectional syncing. Hopefully Google will release CalDAV compatibility soon and this program can die.

RAMONYCAJAL  I have been using gSync for some time now, and have experienced nothing but frustration. Synching is erratic, with problems occurring sporadically and unpredictably. Problems include: duplicate entries, entries that disappear from the Google calendar following a sync, and unwanted invitations that appear in all recurring events. I have downloaded a demo of SpanningSync, and so far it has worked without fail. I recognize the shortcoming of SpanningSyc (price, use of their server), however, in addition to the absence of bugs, they have the added advantages that they handle recurring events, they sync alarms correctly, and they perform scheduled syncs in the background; gSync offers none of the above. The gSync website continues to mislead by headlining the claim "duplicates and recurrences solved"; this is not the case. Multiple users have been posting complaints on the developer's Google Group, but fixes are yet to appear (the developers lay the blame at Google's doorstep). In sum, this application is certainly not ready for prime time.

MIKAELF  Try Plaxo. I did and it keeps all my address books and Calendars in sync. Basic version is free and 99% of what I need is in the free version. I did pay pay but I must admit that I rarely use the paid features.

On the subject if gSybc they said a refund was not a problem...well, I haven't heard from them since. Nor have I seen any money.

Stay away!

MIKAELF  No backup of Google Calendar...only iCal but that didn't help. Google was cleaned out and my iCal filled with somebody elses crap...can you believe it?

If the developer is listening...why don't gSync do a backup on both calendare before potentially screwing things up? This new feature is a free idea from me.

Now that I have two clean calendars gSync seems to work...duh.

MIKAELF  I haven't done it yet.

I will but what happend was that I installed gSync. Configured my gmail account, mapped iCal and Gmail calendar and synced. I got a conflict that I tried to resolve twice and sync again. The third time gSync threw an error. My entries in gmail was now removed....ALL of them. In iCal the caklendar I was syncing with was also cleared out. Both that one and gmail instead had a bunch of entries like "David back from London" David this and David that, "Brooklyn" in multiple locations.

Looks like either someone elses data or demodata. Not familiar to me.

What is there to do. Does Google keep a backup of my data? Would be a nice surprise. It was the gmail calendar that had all my entries of interest.

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  this is a new one for us, we do not do anything with your event data....so this must be coming from Google.

the worst gSync has done to date is create duplicate events, which is definately irratating for all.

note we have 2 verbal groups of users, one who have probs (oddly enough everyone here at macupdate) and the other group love the software....then we have the silent majority (around 15,000 users) who we see are using the software on a daily basis with no probs...or perhaps they are not telling us of problems.

if you can post to the google groups mentioned in this thread, then we will open it as an issue....and we will try to sort out your general issue....note I can't make promises on getting your data back.

cheers, Jim Fuller

MIKAELF  What do you mean wit "We don't do anything with your event data?"

There is a setting in gSync that will override/overwrite Googles calendar data. This means it will potentially delete data in Googles Calendar..right?

I'm trying to understand how any type of misstake in gSync would allow ALL data in my Google calendar to be wiped out. It clearly happend exactly when gSync started throwing errors. I had the Google calendar open in a browser window and saw it reload with garbage.

I think you should consider having gSync do backups on both sides before touching anything. I know a little about software development. I'm working at Oracle in Development and have done so for the last 5 years (17 years in the industri). I'm just now so irritated at myself for not having a backup of my Google calendar. That will NEVER happen again.

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  u are right, in override mode you would simply delete the google calendar and write all apple iCal data.

but in a transactional sense, this is all or nothing, partial updates are simply not possible from our side.

The 'override' mode is a feature, which perhaps we should warn users when they click it.

though all this doesn't explain the 'Dave' events which are particularly worrisome.

gSync doesn't insert random data into events, if event data was corrupt it is highly unlikely that Google API would even accept it via its interface.

With the information so far provided we cannot explain how Google Calendar API would return someone else's events...all sorts of privacy issues there.

It is understandable that you are irate, the best we can do is try to resolve the problem....any chance of you sending me a sample of the Dave data?

armed with this, I can speak to the Google API folks.

btw, do u have any other sync products in use ?

MIOCYON  I gotta say, I keep trying this every time a new version comes out, and I have yet to get it work correctly for me. I don't see new events from iCal in gCal; I often get errors, but don't really know how to fix them, nor how to even see what caused them; I've often gotten duplicates on one or the other side.

The latest version (0.9.9) seemed to work for a bit. It brought up some conflicts, although many of them I had no idea what it was conflicted with (is stuff pulled to the macness server? cuz I often had conflicts there). Then it just got hung up, and the progress wheel just kept spinning.

It's a great idea, but before I pay $20 for it's got to be a lot less buggy. I'll keep trying to get gCalDAEMON to work, although I haven't gotten there yet...

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  note that for the majority of users, things just work with a minimum of interaction.

sounds like you should go to

http://groups.google.com/group/gsync

and we will try to help you out.

you most likely have something fundemantally different with your platform.

Also there might be an interaction issue if u are using other software that syncs.

lastly, we dont have any 3rd party server, the client connects directly to google which is of course more secure.

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  thx for the comments, we have identified 3 bugs with this release....

* for people who have other software that uses the Apple Sync services...there maybe some interaction issues

* password box UI problem

* and for a very small group we have a crash at startup

duplicate calendars are interesting to us cause it sounds like a bug we addressed, any chance of a crash report ?

all bug submissions here will automatically put you in the running for a free copy when (we hope there is a when!) everything works at v1.0 release.

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  thx for the comments, any chance of your OS (intel or powerpc), and a crash log?

I think we can safely assume there is a UI issue with the password box (have had 2 other users report this).

Also crashing at startup was reported by one other user, so something is going on there as well.

unfortunately fixing the recurrences bug of the last version has introduced some issues, which we will track down.

JOHNNY ROCKET  hmmm... it's been synchronizing for 1/2 hour now and has accomplished nothing. In fact it started synchronizing before I gave it an account, had to stop it and give it an account. Had to quit it then refresh the google account to get it to ask for the password. [had to figure this out as the Help only has info on when there will be a stable release and how to uninstall it. (probably the most helpful part)] hmmm... it's still refreshing the google account... but the window with the password is still open... I click the button again and it gets an error. I click the button to show the log and it says 3 times that there was an error logging in. I click the button to close that window and nothing happens. I click the red X to close the window and the whole program crashes.

This is a significant upgrade?

DENISL  Like the other reviewer: it seemed to work nicely the first time. I added a second Google Calendar, syncing to a different iCal calendar, and that was the end! gSync erased everything from Google, and nearly everything from iCal.

I restored my iCal database (thankfully I had a backup!), and tried to sync again. This time gSync reported an error, and then it hung -- had to force quit.

If you have time to kill and want to try this, make sure you have a backup of your iCal database! You'll need it.

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  out of 1500+ downloads, we have recieved 3 critical bug reports with 2 being listed here at macupdate with this corruption issue.

note that the demo build is for Mac OSX 10.4.

We are currently trying to replicate your bug. In any event we are getting plenty of minor bug reports and will release a new demo version sometime in the coming week.

I think considering this is a beta, we definately recc. backing up everything (and I have added this as a warning on the website).

JIMFULLERATMACNESS  thx for the feedback,

we are still trying to replicate this bug...it maybe that the Apple sync machine libraries can be out of sync...not sure, will report back when we know.

so far we have around 1400 downloads with 2 reports of this behavior.

another possibility we are investigating is that if the sync process has not actually finished and gSync was shut down (which we cater for, but is a possibility)

many thx for the continuing feedback.
