MACERICG  With all the people upset over the direction Apple took with iMovie, Norrkross Movie has the opportunity to fill a void -- if:

1) It movies were made compatible/exportable to iDVD

2) Supported 3rd-party iMovie plugins (that are now incompatible)

3) Added some additional iMovie features -- such as chapters

4) Tweaked the interface to have more of the original iMovie feel and handling

PFITZPA1  Got this as part of the mupromo package and today was the first chance I had to really give it a go. I was making a short video for my daughters project.

The User interface feels fairly well designed though some of the things like changing text color and background seemed a bit hard to find at first.

The concept seems quite good but I had a lot of trouble getting transitions to work correctly (or even at all).

For example I couldn't get a transition to fade to black to work at the end of a clip. I had to resort to an animated filter which was a lot trickier to get working than I expected.

The program crashed several times and I lost a fair chunk of work each time.

Filters were very difficult for me. Sometimes I would add a filter but find it very hard to to find the filter in the track again. The node view showed nothing.

Transition choices were very limited.

I also had trouble adding transitions when there was a gap between clips, it seems like you have to make the clips overlap before you can add a transition.

I think this software has great potential overall but the crashing and quirkiness was a killer for me.

I ended up resorting to iMovie and had the project done in no time (though I could not find a way to selectively control track volume at specific times in a clip, which Norrkross seemed to do quite well).

I'll try it again when an update comes out and I have another project to do.

µø˜˚´¥  The crashes I had with previous versions have been fixed - kudos to the developers.

DAVID COFFIN  Excellent! It’s still a little wobbly here and there, but this is already the most impressive new >$100 video editor/compositor I’ve seen this year, and AFAIK I’ve tried them all. It’s elegantly laid out, multi-track, great looking, runs fast and smooth, very stable, has a really cool and powerful node editor for tweaking CoreImage filters and transitions, and above all, a responsive developer and a frequently updated Help manual. And the Media pane shows my Aperture library; nice! (sorry ‘bout the double review; it’s my first post...)

µø˜˚´¥  Imports fine, but crashes every time I try to open the "Filters" pane in the Inspector.

DAVID COFFIN  I had the Filters pane crash, too. Simply wrote to the developer; got a fixed version within 24 hours. This lovely little app has great potential, an elegant and deep interface (love the nodes view!) responsive support, and already runs incredibly quickly and smoothly compared to other video editors I’ve tried, such as FastCut, Videator; it’s the ONE to watch.
