BLLOYD  You could have a look at rubiTrack as well. Wow.

FREEZYJOSY  I like Ascent for its raw data quality. But to be honest the app is really a feature beast with the sacrifice of "beautifulness" and "Apple likeness".

I also use TrailRunner, which is a free app (though donation ware).

With TrailRunner it's just the other way around, less features, more lovableness.

It really depends on what your goals are and what keeps you motivated.

And the third in the pack - Garmin Training Center - is just plain crap. Garmin should just buy Ascent or TrailRunner and make their customers happy. Personally I would suggest TrailRunner to them.

But as it looks, they don't care anyway.

DONMONTALVO  Well worth the shareware fee. This is an incredible application. Gives you so much that you normally need some sort of online application for (like motionbased.com) but allows you to store your data locally, without the annual fee the sites ask for.

HAZMAT  Ascent is awesome. So much better than MotionBased, and as has been said, the developer is very open to feature requests.

SBORDSENIUS  This app will do everything motionbased does, and a lot faster. Excellent in all ways, works perfect with my Garmin 305.

BLLOYD  This is a fantastic app for me -- I have a Garmin 305 and use it when road and mountain biking. It downloads from the Edge perfectly, and shows a map, my route, and all the info from along the way (speed, altitude, gradient, etc.).

It is WAY better than the Garmin software -- both the PC and Mac versions of it. I was using the Garmin software for a while because I didn't know this existed... then a friend pointed it out and I tried it out and bought a license within an hour. It's already excellent and it's maturing and updated quite frequently.

Always great to find small software developers to come out with specialized Mac applications like this. Hooray for Montebello Software (I wonder whether it's named after the 5 mile, 2200 foot climb in Cupertino, CA... looking at the web site I sorta think so ;-)

BARRIKADY  Works very well with my Forerunner 205 interfaced with a G5 and a MacBook.

Excellent data and map displays.

CHESTER586  Phenomenal product. I created an account just to review it. Clearly superior to the Training Center software from Garmin. Garmin should buy this software and redistribute it as thier own. Even better than MotionBased. I bought this product within 5 minutes of using it.

Outstanding!

OGDEN  This program is outstanding. The functionality, the fun, the look, everything is top notch. Garmin tried to put out a Mac version of Training Center but it pales in comparison to Ascent. Even the Windows version of Training Center which has more features than the Mac version can't compete with Ascent. MotionBased.com has lots of features, but it is web based and slow even with a fast connection, and hasn't fully implemented Mac support yet. The best Windows program of this type, SportTracks (Windows only), is best described as clunky compared to Ascent. The only significant feature currently missing from Ascent is an ability to download a course directly to your GPS, but I think that has been promised for the future along with other new and unique features.

CYCLIST  If you own a GPS and use it for running, riding, hiking etc.... and use a Mac... it's the best software to analize data HANDS DOWN! Simply the best. Very reasonable price ($30)... great support and communication!

SHERMAN  Incredibly good software, the application that Garmin Training Center should have been. Paid my $35 and I couldn't be happier!

CURLYPAWS  I found Ascent by chance, and thought initially that with Garmin’s Training Center software now available for the Mac that this wouldn’t offer much. How wrong can you be?

Ascent gives you pretty much the same as an online service such as Motion Based, but on your own Mac. It can show you the full GPS output from your ride, you can get spot values or you can play back the ride on a graph or map and view the figures. It has some nice summary reports as well.

All in all, it is hard to ask for much more. Support covers Garmin’s Edge and Forerunner GPS units at the moment and can read data from them directly. It may work with other Garmin units, but that isn’t guaranteed. If you have an Edge or Forerunner unit you should really check it out!
