COUGAR02 IceClean is good app. But it would be better still if one could download the version indicated, that's to say : the version 3.2 when the 3,2 is announced, the 3,3 when the 3,3 is announced and so on. It's never the case, and the developper (is he a draft?) is never joignable by mail and his website is still being upgraded since a few months. I wander how he manages to have is soft qownloaded. I tried plenty of times with Safari, FireFox and Camino. Nothing works. Nuts! "Bordel de merde", as I say in my language. (Version 3.3)

RONL It always 'throws-up-a-red-flag' for me when I find typos in the description of an application (especially one that can cause problems in the function of the OS... i.e. maintenance app). One wrong character can make a huge difference when writing apps related to maintenance. (Version 3.3)

JAZZICA I agree about spelling errors in descriptions, on web sites, and even in the apps themselves. It seems like one wrong letter, space, dash, or other character could really mess up a Unix machine. And spell-checks won't work with code. It makes me wonder about the negative results of some users of this version (3.3). (Version 3.3)

FICHEYE Yes and yes... IceClean has a function command that I've been looking for... 'Perform all tasks and reboot'. I just don't want to be drawn into the ever deepening complexity of a computers architecture. If somebody wants to learn to program, go for it. But I just want to trust that the software performs as advertised and run the application for the desired effect. IceClean gives the user BOTH options. And it's performed perfectly for me. Onyx and some of the other programs make you develop a script, or run the tasks one at a time, or just require that you engage their learning curve once again. IceClean all the way!! A progress bar would be nice, since a lot of people stare at their computer whenever any analysis is happening. But if it ain't broke, don't fix it. (Version 3.0.8)

XENOPHILE Onyx has the option to automatically perform all tasks, or you can select fewer tasks if you like. In the preferences you can set Onyx to reboot or shut down or sleep after all tasks are completed. I'd suggest not blindly running the "all tasks" routine unless you know what you're doing, though. I've seen users pretty startled at not having any browser history after doing "all tasks" with some maintenance program. (Version 3.0.9)

MATTHEW5384 IceClean is the #1 Mac app to download. It is more valuable than any other app. Thank you so much MacDentro.com! IceClean has saved my Final Cut Studio machine multiple times. Although, I wish there was a more intuitive user interface. The spinning status icon in the bottom right corner lets me know that something is happening, but for first-time users it's pretty confusing. Also, I wish that the status bar was more reflective of the status of the process going on. Usually the status bar doesn't mean anything. But don't get me wrong! This is the best app ever. DANA SUTTON Okay, no more wiseguy comments about the name. Here are some remarks on the app. itself. The good part is that because it is Growl-friendly it has a notification feature. I think all apps. (system optizers, backup and synchronization apps., etc.) that run automated scripts in the background need to have some notification feature, Growl or e-mail (do you hear that, Cocktail authors?). And it has some unusual features (e. g. an ability to prevent the coping of .DS Store files to remote volumes that set it apart. And, of course, it's free. The bad part is that after running chron scripts you are expected to reboot, something most other optimization apps. don't require, which completely nullifies the whole point of having automated scripts. And the app. doesn't seem to be able to create such scripts anyway. Also, documentation and support are virtually nonexistent. All in all, this app. has the feel of work-in-progress. I certainly will keep an eye on it in the future in the hope that it matures into a fully useful program, in which case I'll toss Cocktail and use this (unless Cocktail acquires Growl friendliness (do you hear that, Cocktail authors?). TALLMEN This looks like the kind of app I've been looking for. However, I have 2 concerns: 1. Where is the support/help? 2. Why do I have to install Growl? It is a nice program too (I've tried it) but I don't want it running on my system and have removed it. Hope someone can answer these questions. I contacted the developer through their website a couple of days ago, but still no reply.

DANA SUTTON Why do you want Growl? Let me count the ways... Growl is a Preference Panel resource that notifies you when a given app. has performed a particular task. Growl is very handy in the case of applications that perform prescheduled background actions. It gives you a lot of peace of mind to know that the actions are actually being performed (I once used a particular backup program to back my data up to an external hard disk -- for weeks I blissfully let myself assume it was doing its job when in fact it wasn't doing a damn thing, leaving my data entirely unprotected). In fact, my beef with a lot of system maintenance, backup, and FTP client software is precisely that they do not have some kind of notification feature that lets you know what they are actually doing. The author of this program deserves special commendation for making it Growl-friendly (of course, you're free to ignore it and not install Growl -- which happens to be free, by the way -- but I think that would be very foolish of you) (Version 1.6.3)
| Feb 16 2007 |
TALLMEN Thanks Dana for your advice. I appreciate that Growl is a worthwhile app. My question should have been more clear. Why does IceCream rely on Growl to work? I don't think I have ever used an app that only worked by relying on another program. Seems odd to me and gives me reason to wonder about IceCream. I am also surpised that there does not seem to be any support or help available.
| Feb 16 2007 |
DANA SUTTON Lots of programs rely on Growl for their notification scheme, I think to find out more you should visit the Growl site at http://growl.info/about.php to learn about it. I bet that when you've investigated it a little, you'll be as much of a Growl fan as I am. The lack of good support or documentation for IceClean is a different matter altogether -- yes, it may be a bit amateurish (and really still in beta, the ability to create and save scheduling scripts doesn't seem to be there yet), but if you visit the developer's page you'll at least find an e-mail link. I really wish that Cocktail or some other more professional and well-developed optimization program featured a notification scheme, but as far as I know none does. This is a bad situation, let's hope it doesn't last forever! I. m. h. o. every app. that runs autmated scripts in the background needs to have a notification scheme (other than Growl, the only other way I know of is via e-mail, as ChronoSynch does). (Version 1.6.3)
| Feb 17 2007 |
TALLMEN Thanks again Dana. I think you may have convinced me to install Growl again. I did use the contact form on the IceClean site but have not had a reply in 3 days.

EINGEBILDET yeah, this whole naming thing is silly, not to mention the collision between the name the icon. Polizei is 'police' in German, and the symbol is the international symbol for 'do not enter'. Apparently the author is trying to be cute. at any rate, the feature set of this app is incomplete when compared to several other equally free maintenance applications. i would just as soon use applejack and OnyX.
