SOUTHPAWAMI  It seems there is a rather distracted view of this software. I think I remember paying $25 for the 1.x version I believe, and I'm still happy with it. At that time, Storyist was a very hot piece of software that everyone was happy with getting. My 1.5.2 version still serves me well, and has several features I still don't have a handle on(like the auto linking which interferes with typing if you don't know what's happening). And this software has most everything that's useful to me except a full dark screen with green or yellow type for typing.

I'm sure this 2.x version isn't as bad people are making it out to be.

STORYIST  Hi Southpawami,

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad Storyist 1.5.2 serves you well.

I encourage you to check out version 2, which has a full-screen editing mode and is getting great reviews from users and the Mac press alike. For instance, John Martellaro at The Mac Observer writes

"Storyist, for me, was more fun to use than any of the other novel/screenplay creation tools. ... Because of that intangible feeling of using a thoughtful, finely crafted tool, the scope of the features, and the (available) printed manual, I'm rating Storyist one notch above all the rest."

COCOANUT  I basically like the software but it has an exceedingly annoying shareware reminder that shows itself every few minutes. Developers need to realize that this type of shareware reminder actually backfires and results in more people like me closing the application before giving it a good shakedown. I would that the developer drop the hard sell!

STORYIST  Hi Cocoanut,

I'm the developer of Storyist and I'm delighted that you basically like the software. But a little puzzled.

In Storyist, the only trial reminder is the dialog that appears when you launch the app telling you how many days you have remaining in your trial. There are NO nag dialogs that appear after that while you're writing. Perhaps you are seeing an auto-update dialog (which you'll see if you choose to have Storyist automatically check for updates and an update is available) and are dismissing it by clicking "Remind Me Later"?

Regards,

Steve Shepard

EJI  $59? Really? $59?

I saw this pop up in my MacUpdate RSS and thought it might be useful. So I was going to give it a spin, but there's no way I'm going to pay $59 for story outline software with a few extra bells and whistles, no matter how nice it looks.

I really like the corkboard visual layout with photos for characters, but for my purposes, it's better to create a slimmed-down version without any word processing functions for, say, $20. That way, I can stick with Pages, Word, Bean or WriteRoom for writing and use Storyist exclusively for conceptualization and outlines.

STORYIST  Hi EJI,

I'm the developer of Storyist. Thanks for your interest and for the kind words on the corkboard.

I'd like to point out that Storyist is more than a story outliner with bells and whistles. In addition to the outlining tools, it provides a word processor with a page layout view and support for headers, footers, and style sheets, a Wiki, and a project manager with fast, project-wide search capabilities.

I encourage you to download it and give it a spin.

If you are at Macworld this week, please stop by our booth (S-205). We have a show special price of $45 and I'd be delighted to give you a demo.

And if you're not going to be at the show, you can get the show price with the coupon MACWORLD2008 at our online store.

Thanks again for your interest in Storyist.

THOTH-2  First let me say that I'm in the Storyist Beta Users group and have been using the product for several months now. That said, I have to point out that it simply isn't a general purpose word processor. It isn't ment to be. It does, however, seamlessly merge word processing and database management features in an effort to solve a problem most WPs don't address: minimizing distractions from the creative process. What Storyist does is make it simple to create, maintain and refer back to all story elements and notes without breaking your train of thought. MS Word attempts to do this (halfheartedly) with NoteBook View. Dramatica tries to do this in a rigid and overly complicated process (IMHO). Storyist handles the data and keeps out of the writer's way. It's not perfect but it does what it claims to do better than any other WP I've seen.

GAZMAN  Can't open .rtf, Word documents or import projects from other applications, e.g. CopyWrite. Until these things happen this program won't be finding a permanent home in my Applications folder.

LORD LIGHTNING  This is strangely familiar. Quite like Scrivener. A bit like Avenir and a bit like Jer's NW. It even feels a bit like Montage. The templates will attract users because they are visual and well crafted. The Wiki link approach will also attract users. Is it a worthy competitor for Scrivener? Not even remotely. Pretty though!
