TALLIS  Works great on Snow Leopard (except it doesn't open iCal when I click on a date).

Is a great replacement for iClock that I'd been using before but is outdated.

I especially like the ability to choose the colored icon -along with any color, any font- even though Apple may have chosen to only encourage black and white (or grayscale) icons.

ERIC WOEHLER  Under 10.6.1 some prefs dont work. I can't change the text to a custom colour nor can I change the order of date/time fields. Other prefs seem to work ok. Unsure about reported memory leak - no evidence for me.

FOGCITYNATIVE  Wonderful little application; but V 1.1r1 does not function properly under OS X Snow Leopard.

While it doesn't crash, it also doesn't work. The calendar will pop up, the cursor is visible and it will highligght the dates or the "i" info icon used to set preferences.

But actually clicking on anyhting does not work; nothing bad happens, but it just doesn't work. The bug is confirmed here:

ERIC WOEHLER  Discovered a delightful feature that is undocumented - open the preferences for date and edit the selection - so you can include/exclude items as you wish - so eg, my date shows as Tue 01 Apr, without the year and the day name shortened from Tuesday. Edit works in real time so you can see how the edit will look in yr menu bar. I have no reason to believe the time format can be edited similarly to suit yr personal wishes.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Posted in the 'Editor's Notes' section of the MacUpdate product page for MagiCal:

"Some users are experiencing stability issues with MagiCal under Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) when attempting to access the preferences. We are working on a solution to this problem, and a fix will be released as soon as possible. In the meantime, Leopard users may wish to revert to the 1.1 alpha release, available in the "Related Downloads" section."

DOUGWARD  Did exactly what I wanted to. My only issue is that when I have it just displaying the time, with the sub-pixel anti-aliasing turned off, it's very particular about where I click on it. LEO SPILL  MagiCal 1.1a8. is 4 seconds slow !

When the system preference is set to 'set date and time automatically' MagiCal is four seconds out from the right time.

This is a huge bug and users who need an exact time from their system clock shouldn't use this Alpha.

DEMOSTHENES  My general policy is to fix bugs as quickly as possible after they are reported. It just so happens that there have been a lot of bugs reported over the last few days.

I don't expect that there will be any more updates for a while now, as most of the urgent issues seem to have been resolved.

I strongly recommend that you update to 1.1a8, which is relatively stable. Versions prior to 1.1a7 don't actually tell the time correctly!

CHAS_M  Re: the comment about MenuCalendarClock

I'm not knocking MagiCal, but what you said about MenuCalendarClock simply isn't true. I own the program and get NO reminders (because that's how I like it) unless and until I click on the menubar icon.

MagiCal looks nice and is free, so it's perfect for some. MenuCalendarClock has a few more tricks up its sleeve, however, and some may feel it's worth the small shareware fee.

I entreat any readers to try them both and make up your own mind.

HENRIKTEKNIK  I like it a lot!

Only downside as it stand *right now*, is that its memory footprint is slightly higher than MenuCalendarClock, which I was using before.

I get around 0.5% of CPU useage in my terminal 'top'. MenuCalendarClock was at 0%. While 0.5% isn't that much; having lots of small programs with this memory useage, can easily ramp up the mem loads.

Nevertheless, I like this and will keep it in the menubar.

I'm using Powermac dual 2.5Ghz (PPC), OS X 10.4.9 and 1.5 GB RAM.

NEILVE  MagiCal is a well thoughtout program, and is very handy to use in the menu when placed there during a boot. The developer, Nick, is very receptive to suggestions and takes them serious. This simple freeware app is appreciated and deserves a rare 5-stars because it's flawless in operation, supported in our suggestions, and responsive to them. That type of pride is tough to get with shareware prograns you've laid out your hard earned cash for...

LLSCOTTS - Nice write up. I checked your CPU usage and found that you are right. MagiCal uses between 3.60 and as high as 6.80 when idle. It spikes on just clicking the date to 76.90% ?

LLSCOTTS  MagiCal is evolving nicely... I've tried every release so far, and the developer is adding lots of useful preferences and options to a cool little app. The biggest weakness--and the reason I'm not using MagiCal regularly--is the problem others have noted with MagiCal's excessive CPU usage.

To demonstrate, I took screenshots of three apps that all do pretty much the same thing, and all of which are free: MagiCal, wClock, and MenuCalendarClock (the latter has advanced iCal integration that will cost you, but you can use it for free otherwise). They all present customizable date and time info in the menubar, and present a calendar when clicked. MagiCal's cool trick is that the calendar can be torn off and replicated in case you want to see more than one month at a time. wClock's calendar is torn off by default and can be repositioned wherever, but it's no longer downloadable unfortunately. MenuCalendarClock's calendar is fixed to the menubar and can't be repositioned.

Magical regularly uses 5 percent of my CPU to do its thing. wClock typically uses 0.5-1.0 percent of my CPU, and MenuCalendarClock typically uses ZERO percent. MagiCal uses 5 percent even if I disable any behavior that might change the menubar information. Here are the screenshot links if you're interested:

MagiCalwClockMenuCalendarClock

I hope the developer will utilize some of the testing tools Apple provides to figure out what's causing the extra CPU usage. I'm sure it'll be fun to hunt that down, and I guarantee you'll win over more users with that than by adding another kind of clock icon (as nice as they are!) :-)

Cheers,

Leland

LEO SPILL  I think it's great ! - Kudos to the UK developer for making such an excellent freeware option of Mac users. It's great to have date and time differentiated by colour in the menubar.

My only request is the ability for MagiCal to automatically disappear when playing a movie by either Apple's DVD Player or VLC player.

Highly recommended !

DEMOSTHENES  I'm not clear what you mean by 'disappear' - MagiCal's menu and tear-off calendars do not appear in front of full-screen movie presentations in VLC.

Or have I misunderstood what you are asking for?

Version 1.0.4r2 does indeed hide on entering fullscreen. A small point - could you pack your app in a finder folder with maybe a 'read me' and a homepage URL next release ?

WHIT_G  I'd be willing to give this a higher rating if wClock (which is very outdated but still works perfectly in 10.4.8) didn't take up about 10% of the CPU usage as MagiCal. wClock has almost as many features (and full font selection).

EDENWAITH  Once my last menu item calendar application was no longer being developed, I needed a replacement, especially something that was more complete, but didn't have to be everything and the kitchen sink. All I need is a quick way to see what day and month it is by glancing at the menu bar, and to be able to easily scroll through the months without having to open Apple's System Preferences. Some calendar programs try to add extra features like iCal integration, but that far exceeds my needs.

There have been a few odd drawing quirks here and there with the icon, but once those are ironed out, this program will be perfect.

Simple, and great for my needs.

DEMOSTHENES  It potentially has to redraw the menu clock once a second, which is always going to use up some CPU.

There is room for some optimisation though (such as not redrawing the clock when the seconds aren't displayed), so hopefully I'll be able to cut this down a bit in future releases.

DEMOSTHENES  I'm sorry, I'm not clear what is meant by the previous comment. Is it a suggestion?

If so, you will be pleased to know that in version 1.0.3 the clock is not redrawn more than once per minute if seconds are not included in the time format (as mentioned in the release notes), however the resultant reduction in CPU usage is not as great as I would have expected.

SIMICHAVEL  IMHO, the tear-off idea is great.

It could probably use an option not to float above apps.

Without tasks in day view etc., it seems like an inefficient use of desktop space.

The multiple format options for the menu date and clock is a nice touch. So is the seconds hand on the analog clock. But menubar analog clocks have proven extremely difficult to make easy on the eyes; they's just too small. Likewise - and this is more easily adjusted - the date+day/mo. icon is too jam-packed.

I realize the name of the company is Charcoal Design, but this item really needs the option for more colorful themes.

The way the little "i" comes up when the cursor goes over the calendar is really elegant. And the fact that it does that for the tear-off sheets too is a great perk.

DEMOSTHENES  It is not necessary to disable Menufela and reboot, you can simply switch off menu hiding.

This will allow you to access the MagiCal preferences and set it up, or tear off a calendar. After this you can re-enable menu hiding and continue to use both programs, all without requiring a restart.

Of course, since it is "essentially worthless" you won't be wanting to do that I suppose.

CHIPCHAP  I think this would be a great app if I wasn't using Menufela. Sure you can configure the menubar display by turning off hiding, but the drop-down calendar doesn't work with menu hiding on, which is the only real feature I'm interested in.

All in all, if you aren't using Menufela for the menu hiding and don't need iCal integration, To-Do lists (try Sidebar), etc: this is a welcome addition to most people's Macs. I'll certainly recommend it to those I know that don't use Menufela.
