ICONZ113 oh my freakin god, this app is off the hook, what was I thinking, evernote, yojimbo, together, devonthink is where its at. Buyign a license without a doubt. plus you wont feel overwhelmed when you have a lot of data archived because the app can handle it, in all those other apps its either impossible to get info out or you have so much stuff its everywhere. ROD76 For those of you upgrading to Snow Leopard uncheck all the additions when installing DEVONthink i.e. scripts (those options you get when first installing/updating. Once unchecked DEVONthink operates correctly. Looking forward to the fix! (Version 2.0pb6)

JUST A USER stay away, they cannot offer a product, just a beta that will expire and then all the data organisation will be LOST. DO NOT PAY for it if you want the new features, the beta is free, so do not waste your money on the license, it will expire!! If you do not trust me, well, look at their forum! they promise a lot of features but they never come, go for eagle filer instead! (Version 2.0b5)

IRRADIATED SOFTWARE Your review is fairly narrow sighted. By the developer doing a beta program, they can get critical feedback to shape the product into something the customers desire. It also shows that this product is under active development, so your purchase will not go toward an abandon piece of software. Good software takes a long time to write, especially for small indie companies. If you want stability, you can still buy and use the 1.x version which gives you a free license to 2.0 when it releases. Even 1.x is more capable than most other competitors in this market, but it's also more expensive. Just my 2 cents. (Version 2.0b5)

LEV Well well. And to think I never knew that DevonThink was cobbled together by Silesian elves from old time-expired sheep components which would disintegrate like at the end of Lost Horizon once they'd sucked in ALL YOUR DATA and then you NEVER BE ABLE TO USE IT AGAIN. I thought they were a small but meticulous dev shop which produced a really fine everything-manager of great power, albeit with a slightly crufty front end, and that they were taking a while to make a major integer release. Come on, fella. If you don't have facts, don't print the story. You're just ticking off (and -- it's a legal term -- defaming a company for reasons which are beyond me. And you're also ticking off MU users who don't like being told what to to unless we get good reasons. Come back with good reasons and welcome. For now, hold it right there... (Move along people. Nothing to see here. Move along.) (Version 2.0b5)

Devon Technologies has been around a long time my friend and is well known for those that have looking into tools for research. I check the forums everyday and for the most part they are quiet. Kudos should be given to DT because very few companies allow you to beta test the program at such a level. Hang tight and check it out when its out of beta and I'm sure you'll be happier. DT doesn't ship crappy software. (Version 2.0b6)

VALDIMAR THOR H BERU0 has no idea what this softwere is about. Complete misunderstanding of the whole concept and lack of knowledge about both the softwere and the developers of it. This softwere is well worth every penny and deserves 4.5 stars! (Version 2.0b6)

TOD WICKS Beru is a known troll and constant whiner on the DevonTech forums. He's so wrapped up in this ongoing beta cycle that he even believes his own rants about losing data. It has been shown many times over that the data remain intact and are in fact in readable format (ie PDF, RTF, JPG) and totally accessible through the Finder, even if you decide not to continue with expiring betas. The betas have expiration date, it's true, but there is a very good reason for this: It keeps support overhead down by not having to support older versions once the product ships the final release. Even so, simply setting your computer's clock back a few months will "reactivate" the expired beta should you ever need to extract data (for instance if you ignore the fact stated above about the data being Finder accessible even if DT is no long on your Mac). This guy doesn't know what he's talking about and should be totally ignored just like we do on the forum. (Version 2.0pb6)

BRYANG DevonThink Pro Office is absolutely the best-of-class product with world-class service and support. I have been using the product since before the "Pro Office" version was offered, and my databases have matured and expanded exponentially since then. I have NEVER (repeat, NEVER) lost data when upgrading, even when upgrading to one of the publicly released beta products. The company provides detailed info, warnings, and procedures to guard against loss of any hard-won data when trying out one of their beta products. The improvements and features that still need work are explicity detailed in the docs. The author of the oriiginal comment seems to be, honestly, a whiner without substance. I am still developing workflows to add onto well-established workflows using the 7th beta version of Pro Office 2.0 - this is as I discover features, services, scripts, and automator functionality that truly makes this a unique product that will last for years. Thank you Devon Technologies! And to you, those reading these reviews - I'm sure you've gained enough discernment to see through the spoiled, superficial brattiness of these casual dabblers (sometimes going under the guise of "reviewers") who loves to disparage wonderful solutions. MERRIMAC The new ABBYY OCR engine is excellent and a big improvement over the previous Readiris engine. From what I gather, ABBYY is generally considered to be the top OCR engine, but up till now it wasn't available for Mac. Now, with DEVONthink Pro's new integration of ABBYY, DEVONthink seems to have become the best OCR option available for Mac (other than Acrobat Pro, which I have not tested). Given that ABBYY's OCR software for Windows and Acrobat Pro both costs hundreds of dollars, DEVONthink Pro is a bargain. (Version 2.0b4)

Does anyone know if the ABBYY OCR engine incorporated with DevonThink will cope with digital photos of books [straightening lines, etc] like the stand-alone version does? I can upgrade from DT personal 1.9 [which I have not in fact used] to 2 for $50, a lot less than buying ABBYY itself [equivalent of $140 in the UK]. Sadly no sign of ABBYY Photoreader for the Mac. MAUDLIN This is from the "Upgrader's Guide" on Devonthink Pro Office 2.0pb2 "Due to technical difficulties with the new engine this public beta comes with OCR temporarily disabled. We and ABBYY are working hard on making it work again and will release a new public beta as soon as possible." If you need OCR stick with the previous beta, where it still works. (Version 2.0pb2)

DIGITAL FURY I'm writing this short review, to complement the one I did for the "Pro" version. This "Pro Office" makes more sense to me, because of the scanning + OCR integration (using a Fujitsu S300M) which allows some nice time saving automation. I haven't tested the email, which should really be included in all version by default, and the integrated web server, but it seems stable for a beta. Considering it includes scanner support and an OCR engine, the $150 price is a better value than the "Pro" edition at $80. (Version 2.0 pb1)

ROD76 Its been a long wait, here are some of my observations. The application finally changes the name of the actual file to match a name change in the database; this has been driving me nuts for years. There are a few beta glitches that need ironing out, namely: 1: The new DEVONthink sorter doesn't play nice on multi monitor setups - it has to be placed on the furthest edge otherwise it doesn't properly collapse. 2: There are some refreshing issues when moving between files in the display pain - its not showing the view of the newly selected file unless you click it a few times or move back and fourth from another file I'm sure I'll find a few more bugs before a full release is made next year. That said, I'm very pleased with this new version and expect great things from it. The only feature I really wanted and can't find is full database encryption option. I keep sensitive info in it and I really don't want to create a separate sparse image to achieve what could be done in the app itself! (Version 2.0 pb1)

LEE123 I agree with multimago, this software is good but could be so much better. I have owned this for several years and love it but there are some things that really need some polish. I wish the developer were more ambitious with such things as interface and the little quirks that annoy everyone. For instance, type Sam into the search field. So maybe you find something but how do you get back to the main group? You can click everywhere and not get the main group to come into view. (Version 1.5)

BILLD Lee, here's the answer to your question. How to "back out" to the original document after a search from the Three Panes view: 1) Clear the query by clicking on the "X" symbol in the Search field. Your original document will be highlighted. OR 2) Click on the "back" triangle to the left of the URL field. There's your original document. What's neat is that if you now click the forward triangle you can see the search result document you viewed (or, with another click of the forward button, another search result that was selected and viewed). Clicking (multiple times if needed) will again) let you travel back to the original document. Disclaimer: I'm the Evangelist for DEVONtechnologies. (Version 1.5)

MULTIMAGO This softeare is very nice, of course. However I have only few small vegative notes: The interface is 1990style, not intuitive. ...a genius in a closed box I use EagleFiler ( http://c-command.com/eaglefiler/ ), very very Bad icon but very nice program. In EF the database is "open" (but protected), if you don't like to use more EF you can change! without problems. This is the most important thing. I want my files today but also tomorrow!, also with another software... DevonThing can do it?? (Version 1.3.3)

BILLD Yes, DEVONthink databases can have all their documents sent to and stored in the Finder. That has always been the case. The user's data is not "locked" into the DEVONthink database and is fully recoverable. (Version 1.3.3)

KPE Flexible and powerful enough to meet all my needs. Search and Auto-Classify features are fast and alleviate the need to laboriously tag everything (You can use the comments field to tag if needed). I have been using a version of DevonThink for nine months and have never had a crash. OCR feature in Pro Office is great value. Readris is $130, ProOffice is $150. Support is great, check out the forums, they'll even help you write scripts. (Version 1.3.3)

DUNAWAY I've been using Devonthink Pro Office since mid May '07 in my law office. Although it has taken me a while to begin to realize the potential of the program, recently I've been using Devonthink more and more. Typically, I will handle 100-200 pages of documents per day, either scanned or downloaded. Being able to store them in Devonthink and view them in the viewer without opening up the actual document is a huge plus and the main reason I use the program. I am looking forward to continuing to use other features and see additional improvements to the program. (Version 1.3.2)

ROUSTEM KARIMOV I used DEVONThink Pro for over a year and found it to be a great tool to organize my documents and research I do every day. After the DEVONThink Pro Office was released I purchased Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner. Together they make a fantastic combination -- with a push of a button I can quickly scan a multi-page document and DEVONThink Pro Office will perform OCR (optical character recognition) to create a searchable PDF document and then store it in the database. In just a few days I got rid of more than 80% of the paper in my office and I can find any document in a matter of seconds! (Version 1.3.2)

i've just exported all my notes from yojimbo and imported them into devonthink. while i've been dragging the imported notes into various folders within devonthink it's crashed about half a dozen times - no warning. just one minute it's there, the next 'poof!' - it's gone. i dunno if this is a fair representation of how it behaves in normal use, but it's made it completely unusable for me. if i can't get my existing info into it, i sure as hell ain't gonna waste any more time on it! BLULOO Sorry to hear about your crashes. As a user of DT since the early betas, I can say that my experience has been one of stability with VERy rare crashes. More than likely, there is something else installed interacting with DTP (haxies and some plugins are known to crash the app, as is Safari 3 beta). Check out the user forums for help.

BLUEJAY3132 Check out the previous poster's comments on other products. His/her problem may lie somewhere other than with Devon. My Macs don't have stability problems with Devon products (Devon Pro Office & Devon Agent), or for that matter with any of my many other programs. (Version 1.3.3)
