DJ PFUNK  IM a dj now for about the last 6 years and this is a life saver, sure like anything its not perfect.. but the BPM park rocks, is counts the BPM and then tags it, the accuracy if it so far to my knowledge is about 98% and if its off it off by alot like 200. but thats fine I just enter those by hand. I have over 75000 songs so I saved about a years worth of work.. loading BPM's by hand... a must buy for dj's

BEDOUIN  As a DJ, this helps me put together playlists in iTunes. Unfortunately, it gets the BPMs wrong a little too often and I end up using a Dashboard widget I downloaded to tap the BPMs in . . .

Then again, the BPM counters on my CD decks aren't always perfect either. Maybe there's never going to be a near-perfect BPM counter -- well, except your own ears and a stopwatch.

LANCE1619  Two things-

I don't like that the software immediately begins analyzing my library. I tried to stop the analysis, but it only let me pause it. Perhaps there is a way to stop analyzing the songs, but it was not readily apparent (to me).

Also, the program gave me a number of 5 digit bpm results. ex. Blondie's "Rapture" resulted in a bpm of 30272!

Again, maybe it's me, but I've experienced the 2nd comment with other bpm programs. I hate that.

FLEC65  Tangerine! is the tool that was missing for my Nike + iPod kit. It saves me tons of time creating playlists for my runs. Tangerine! can create 5 of them in a minute. For me, the best way to do it, is to first narrow the choice by genre. I really like the fact that I can create complex playlists by adding them one to another (press option and the "+" button) to really fit my workout. The BPM analyzing is rather good, in fact better than what I expected. I have to halve the BPM on some songs once in a while but other than that, the app is rock solid and works flawlessly. And the UI is a real treat to the eye too.

ANDYPOTION  Hi There,

I do check MacUpdate comments once in a while to see what people are saying, but I don't do it often enough. Please send us support inquiries directly if you wish to see matters addressed more promptly.

XSMURF  Apparently Tangerine! cannot find the tunes...

"2007-05-23 17:39:15.123 TangerineAnalysisHelper[29943] Analyzing "file://localhost/Volumes/MP3Mansion/Genres/Electronic%20:%20Breakbeats/DJ%20Shadow/2005%20-%20Schoolhouse%20Funk%20II/16%20-%20Time%20Cycle.mp3"

2007-05-23 17:39:15.138 TangerineAnalysisHelper[29943] ERROR -- OpenMovieFile - from file://localhost/Volumes/MP3Mansion/Genres/Electronic%20:%20Breakbeats/DJ%20Shadow/2005%20-%20Schoolhouse%20Funk%20II/16%20-%20Time%20Cycle.mp3, err -43"

According to Apple "-43" is "fnfErr = -43, /*File not found*/", if you guys are using standard error codes.

Sorry for not posting details earlier.

XSMURF  Hmmm I meant to post this as a reply to my previous comment, MU's login broke the redirect. Sorry, maybe an MU admin can modify this?

XSMURF  I store my music library on a network drive. Tangerine doesn't seem to like that, it gave an error on all the tracks. This is unusable for me until it starts supporting remote drives. I really don't see why it doesn't work, iTunes is opened and can play the tunes just fine, the share is mounted.

GRYPHONENT  Tangerine is a great concept... but for the steep price I’d expect better analyzing capabilities and better AI (or shall we call it common sense?). I had Eric Serra’s “Deep Blue Dream” from the soundtrack for “The Big Blue” mixed together with Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” Come again??

DOUG S.  I love this app! It's got a nice clean UI that compliments iTunes while remaining an individual and it's icon is one of the few applications where I don't have an extreme desire to change it. Very nicely done!

Features, it does exactly what it's supposed to do with no hiccups. It's extremely easy to use and, what's more, extremely useful.

As for stability, The previous version of this app was able to process 20,000 songs in about 24 hours with my G4 PowerBook (1.5GHz Processor, 1.5GB of RAM) and with my MacBook Pro (2.33GHz Processor, 2GB of RAM) it's able to do 21,000 songs in about 4 hours.

So for those of you out there with massive music libraries like myself, no worries you can set this going and leave it for the afternoon and before you can blink it will be done!

Fantastic app!

FUNKBOY  Very nice program! Solid feel, fun icon, beautiful interface, totally smooth integration with iTunes. This just feels right.

As far as the actual quality of the playlists it creates: I created a workout playlist. Looking over the songs it selected, Tangerine has chosen wisely. The only clunker on its first try (before all its analyzing is done - because who wants to wait for it to finish when first downloaded?) was sticking Miles Davis's excellent but decidedly slow performance of 'Round Midnight right in between Foo Fighters and Eric Clapton's original (fast) Layla. It's the only obviously misplaced song in the playlist, which is pretty impressive for only having completed analyzing 400 of 2500 tracks in my library. My older 1.42GHz G4 Mac Mini looks like it will take about an hour and a half to analyze all 2500 tracks. It's also doesn't feel like it's totally bogging down my computer, though it is working hard in the background. The analyzed file it's creating appears to be very small in file size - not much bigger than 1MB for my 2500 tracks.

Tangerine has done a great job with this first playlist, with only one oddity in these 80 minutes. The aforementioned wonderful look and feel results in amazing execution for a 1.0 product!

I cannot say I feel this is worth $25, especially when I can pick up an iPod Shuffle for about $70. I would purchase this for $15 without too much thought, but $25 seems a little optimistic right now. I could just be being miserly, though.

Supporting iTMS songs is completely necessary for future improvement, though. Everyone's library of iTunes songs is growing daily. For those with mostly DRM-free music, though, Tangerine is a wonderfully smooth product.

FUNKBOY  I was hoping I could edit my original review, but I guess not.

Tangerine reported time to analyze my 2500 song library was 59 minutes. Pretty good for my old G4.

It seems to want to use the same songs over and over again, which makes sense since it has somehow identified them as certain BPM. Really, it's doing a pretty good job though. Reminding me of music I had lost in the shuffle of 2500+ songs.

Good job, I'll keep my eye on this one!

FUNKBOY  A great future improvement would be to have Tangerine identify whether a song has vocals or not. No clue if this is easily done, but having a checkbox for "Instrumentals Only" would be a very nice feature for creating a playlist of calm, soothing back ground music. Maybe we could hear calming Tangerine-generated playlists in doctor waiting rooms instead of elevator muzak.

I hope the developers are reading all these posts, I'm making way too many! That should show a level of excitement about the product :)

ORION MK. V  There is already a great color management tool for Mac OS X called Tangerine. Do a name search before branding a product.
