BRUCEANDERSON Yesterday XLD (latest version) crashed. Since then it's been behaving erratically. I deleted the application, the cache and preferences, but it's still behaving weirdly. Sometimes it behaves normally, but sometimes it refuses to encode files I drop on it. Just a few minutes ago, it wouldn't respond to the "OK" button after editing tags. Is there another file I need to delete somewhere? I transcode lots of music, and I have come to rely on XLD - it's simple and (until yesterday) just worked. I'll do a nuke & pave if I have to, but I'd rather not have to go through that process if I can avoid it. Thanks! (Version 20090320)

DOCC I was in more or less the same situation as several others have described here: trouble decoding FLAC files and having XLD hanging on the second file. (At that point my whole system would hang.) This surprised me since XLD has performed flawlessly from the first time I tried it. Removing WindowShade and the APE file it installs fixed all the problems I was having. Those Haxies just don't seem worth the bother. (Version 20090320)

DROPS You are right GULLI, I have the same problem on my PPC with Tiger (10.4.11). Apple Lossless can't be re-converted to lame mp3 with XLD, wether I try a batch conversion or drop single files onto XLD, it doesn't work. I think XLD produces (maybe minor) corruption in its Apple Lossless files and therefore can't convert them later to lame. Is there any fast and simple workaround known to get it work in XLD? GULLI Great software, but there is one SERIOUS BUG here: Whenever I try to convert Apple Lossless later to Lame mp3 it just works on the first file in a row, all the following files are skipped with an error. It seems XLD has a problem with Apple Lossless it created. Are these Apple Lossless files somehow corrupted? Flac and everthing else work very well, but I can't use them in iTunes. I would prefer Apple Lossless, but if I can't reencode them later with Lame mp3 for use on my MP3 player (no iPod) it is useless. And iTunes produces very bad mp3s. Where is the bug? Or is it just me? Mac OS 10.4.11 PPC (Version 20090320)

TYLERINHIFI Great program. One problem though. Enhanced CD's will not finish ripping the final track. All other CD's rip without fail, but enhanced CD's stall at about the 99% point of the test. Cancelling the test run gives the same result in the actual rip. It goes to 99% and stalls. No errors, no crashes, just continues chugging along at 0.0x speed. ANOMIA This is still my favourite mac ripper/sound file app; however, I have gone back to version 20080818 because of difficulties with the first track not being completely processed, while all others are fine. This occurred with all subsequent versions of the app at one point or another until I finally settled back on version 20080818, where it has never happened. The incomplete file process would consistently happen with mp3 rips. Not sure if other processes were consistently affected by this 'bug'. I don't know if it is only my computer, as others to my knowledge haven't complained about it. I haven't seen an update in a while, I do hope this can be checked, and the newer version fix finally this problem for me(if it isn't my fault somehow). CORPSECORPS Can't get this to consistently detect which audio CD is in the drive. First couple discs in the session, it worked fine. Next time it just said "Audio CD" and located no CD name, track names, or other tag info. I fiddled around with refresh and restarting it and it eventually retrieved the data. Next time around that didn't work either. If the drawer is open, it says "Audio CD not detected" in the menu. Once i close the drawer, it says "Audio CD", but never does get the information. Common CD's that have been around for quite some time so it's unlikely it's not in the database. The one i eventually got it to recognize was same artist, consecutive year. (Version 20080914)

TANTPIS Simply the best ! What a powerful software ! I finally found the Mac equivalent of Exact Audio Copy for Windows ! After 5 years of using EAC, I was desperate to find a powerful and complete CD Ripper for Mac OS X. Definitely forget iTunes if you need a really powerful tool for ripping CD's with a maximum of options, security, reporting and audio formats. All the best functions are included in X Lossless Decoder (optical drive test runs, ultra secure audio extraction, all the best lossy and lossless audio formats like Lame MP3 3.98, AAC or FLAC, Multi-Format Output, detailed information about errors encountered...) In addition, the interface is simple, complete and comprehensive ! Bravo ! (Version 20080914)

TUFTY State of the art CD ripping on the Mac, it's as simple as that. When you want to be sure you got a good rip, XLD gives you AcurateRip, Test runs (to compare checksums) and detailed information about errors encountered. It's a good audio conversion tool too, though Max might have the edge for flexibility and format support on that front. Kudos to the developer, who has been working very hard on this over the last few weeks. (Version 20080914)

TIAGO Yes, you're missing something... Jitter errors are consider correctable and, as such, you can get a rip with "no errors" even when the log shows some jitter errors, dropped bytes or duplicated bytes... The "serious" errors are the ones listed as "Read errors" and "Skipped"... Everything else is considered correctable... To be on the safe side, enable "Verify suspicious sectors" and "Test before copy"... (Version 20080905)
| Sep 6 2008 |
FAITHPUPPETEE I have enabled both, but with the albums I tested the errors remained the same even after those extra precautions. I take it then, that if the final verdict is that 'No Errors Occurred' that I have come away with a rip worth holding on to? That is to say, I have ripped the same CD without the precautions you mentioned and with them and received virtually identical results in both cases. CRC32 hash (skip zero) : FEB953F2 Skipped (treated as error) : 0 Edge jitter error (maybe fixed) : 1 Atom jitter error (maybe fixed) : 1 Drift error (maybe fixed) : 0 Dropped bytes error (maybe fixed) : 0 Duplicated bytes error (maybe fixed) : 0 Inconsistency in error sectors : 0" I received the above entry for the same track with the options you mentioned off and also while they were on. I take it that the track should be fine given that there are no Read/Skipped error entries? I performed a few rips with error values as high as 5-8 (Not skipped/read errors) which were ultimately listed as 'No Errors Occurred.' Would that be of acceptable quality? Thanks for the help! (Version 20080905)
| Sep 6 2008 |
TIAGO This rip seems to be fine... The errors reported are correctable... Note that I'm saying correctable and not corrected... Even the log will only tell you that those errors were "maybe fixed". How can you be sure or at least less unsure? LOL 1. Apparently you have not enabled AccurateRip... Any reason for that? Even if most of your CDs are not in their database, there's absolutely no downside in keeping it on... If it's on and the CD is in their database, there's a high chance you'll have a confirmation that the rip is good... It's not 100% fool proof, since you can have a different pressing of the album, among other things... 2. In this example, the rip has no "test before copy". Although it doubles the time needed for conversion, I prefer to keep it enabled, at least in discs with lots of scratches... Why? Because with it enabled you get a redundancy check of the CRC for the track... If there's a match in the CRC of the test pass and the copy pass, there's a high chance that the rip is ok. If there's a mismatch, on the other hand, something is wrong. The good thing is that you'll be able to easily spot those situations... 3. Also, if you already ripped this CD several times, check the CRCs... If they were always the same, it's very likely that you got a good rip... (Version 20080905)
| Sep 6 2008 |
FAITHPUPPETEE What do you mean by CRCs? Also, these are the settings as I've had them for the past several rips: http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z223/Arsis1/Picture1.jpg For some reason, the check against accurate rip is basically never mentioned, although that may be because the albums I am ripping simply aren't in their database, right? Also, the rips in which I enabled test before copy had nearly identical error sets (there shouldn't be an issue with scratches either, I buy CDs new and I'm pretty neurotic about storing and using them to avoid any damage). Thanks again! (Version 20080905)
| Sep 6 2008 |
Your settings are correct... I prefer to keep the "test before copy" enabled, but that's a personal preference... You're free to disable it, but understand that this is one of those things you'll only value when you need it (like a car insurance, for example). Most of the time, test before copy serves only to double the time it takes to complete a rip, but when it catches something you would miss otherwise, then you'll value it... Since it's impossible to predict when will this happen, I find it better to keep it enabled all the time... You're using the latest version... I haven't ripped anything with this version, but here's how the log looks like WITH AccurateRip verification enabled (this is a log from the "latest previous version")... CRC32 hash (test run) : AE951E42 CRC32 hash (skip zero) : 4251AC7B AccurateRip signature : 49ADBB06 ->Rip may not be accurate. Skipped (treated as error) : 0 Edge jitter error (maybe fixed) : 0 Atom jitter error (maybe fixed) : 0 Dropped bytes error (maybe fixed) : 0 Duplicated bytes error (maybe fixed) : 0 Inconsistency in error sectors : 0 With a log like this, you can see: 1. That the test and copy CRCs are the same (AE951E42)... This is good... Without getting into complex details, a CRC is like a "digital signature" for the file... If you have two files with matching signatures, you can be 99.99999999% sure that you have identical files... This is what you want when ripping with test and copy, since if you're able to perform two different rips of a track (1 for test + 1 for copy) and end up with exactly the same result, it's very likely that the rip is successful... 2. The "->Rip may not be accurate." message was presented because this particular rip was not present in AccurateRip database... In the latest version, there is a preference to determine how such scenarios would be reported in the log... Unfortunately, I'm not at my home computer so I cannot perform one rip ATM, to see how the report changed... Just by curiosity, but your "Read sample offset correction value: 48"... Make sure that "48" is the correct value for your particular drive... I'm only saying this because maybe you copied the settings from some tutorial and this is one setting that's specific for your drive model... (Version 20080905)
| Sep 6 2008 |
FAITHPUPPETEE The rip offset value I have was taken from the AccurateRip database listing for my drive: OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A, so I'm hoping that is correct. I suppose I could try and re-rip things with the test before copy feature enabled, but I have done a few runs on different albums with the same settings (minus that one) and received similar results. There have been a couple instances where I ripped a disc to mp3 and FLAC where I received errors (not Skip or Read errors) that differed slightly, but from what you've said it sounds as though those errors aren't critical or really an issue. I have the AccurateRip setting configured that way so that it'll check it without giving me an error/warning when the disc isn't in the database (as I think most of what I listen to wouldn't be). Though, I suppose most of the rips should be fine as I know the source discs are in great shape, I could take the time to test any used discs I pick up though. It seems like most of the Edge/Atom jitters are noncritical errors that can be corrected though, right? (Version 20080905)
| Sep 6 2008 |
FAITHPUPPETEE I'll do a test rip of Spawn of Possession's Cabinet album to .FLAC real quick with test before copy enabled and post the log, perhaps that'll help. Cheers! (Version 20080905)

FAITHPUPPETEE It seems to be working! CRC32 hash (test run): FA31FA6A CRC32 hash (skip zero) : A4341E25 Skipped (treated as error): 0 Edge jitter error (maybe fixed): 0 Atom jitter error (maybe fixed): 0 Drift error (maybe fixed): 0 Dropped bytes error (maybe fixed): 0 Duplicated bytes error (maybe fixed): 0 Inconsistency in error sectors: 0 (Version 20080905)

FAITHPUPPETEE I performed a rip on another CD and received the following result for a few different rips of said CD: CRC32 hash (test run) : F5CD1475 ->Rip may not be accurate. CRC32 hash (skip zero) : EC7D68F9 Skipped (treated as error) : 0 Edge jitter error (maybe fixed) : 1 Atom jitter error (maybe fixed) : 0 Drift error (maybe fixed) : 0 Dropped bytes error (maybe fixed) : 0 Duplicated bytes error (maybe fixed) : 0 Inconsistency in error sectors: 0 Some inconsistencies found Is there any way to correct this? Also, I have registered for the HydrogenAudio forums, but I apparently have to wait five or so days to post. Thanks again! (Version 20080905)
| Sep 8 2008 |
TIAGO Is there any way to correct this? You have mismatching CRCs in the test and in the copy run... Why? I can't know for sure, but you can try cleaning the disc surface very thoroughly and trying to rip again... Maybe that will help, or maybe not... Maybe there is a physical defect in the disc surface or maybe the CD is copy protected (those are a bitch to rip properly)... In essence, what you want is the same CRC for both runs... You should keep trying until you do so... If it's only one track that's giving you a hard time, feel free to rip it alone, to speed things up... One more thing, and this is my personal opinion: I'm not sure if you have the checkbox for "Treat AccurateRip mismatch as an inconsistency in log" checked or not, but I prefer to have it unchecked... Bottom line: if you have a different pressing from the one on AccurateRip database, you'll receive the "Some inconsistencies found" message at the end of the log, even if your rip is perfect... That can give you a misleading impression that something is wrong, when it's not... (Version 20080905)

NOTARYSOJAC XLD seems very powerful and I like its support of the unending range of audio formats the PC folks seem intent on producing. The Help content seems rather sparse. There are some odd things about XLD: - Manually selecting the cuesheet encoding is bizarre, and you have to be sure you set it right or all you get is white-noise. The trick I just figured out is to open the .cue file in TextEdit, then select Save As. In the Save dialogue it will display the file's text encoding in case you want to change it. This took me three hours to figure out this afternoon and I have not started any Labour Day imbibing yet... - Regarding the file-open dialogue: are we supposed to know to set the bit-rate, endian-ness, etc of a file as we open it? to get Lame V0 just put the "Target Quality slider to the right (260 kbps) till you see 0.0... But shouldn't there be a "Very high/insane (-q 0)" at the Overall Quality popup-menu??? Don't know LAME is a bit confusing, maybe the developer will answer this here for all his users. By the way: for my ears (using good AKG- or Sennheiser-headphones) Lame VBR new, High (-q2), -V 0.0 - which gives files with around 180-220 kbps - sounds as good as 256 kbps AAC or 320 kbps CBR, - but gives much smaller filesizes.

MOZART & HAENDEL Very good work, Mr. Developer, many thanks to you for XLD. Why are there restrictions in the LAME-encoder of XLD? XLD dont let us use the VBR setting -V 0 --vbr-new or -V 1 --vbr-new, only V 2 is the maximum in XLD, why that? If you use V 0 you get nearly (exact) the quality of CBR 320 but with V 0 the filesize is reduced to 60 % of a CBR 320 file. I know, on most audio files you cant hear a difference between VBR 0 or VBR 2, but if you listen to electronic or classic musique, there are sometimes ringings or other distortions in VBR 2 files, that are gone if you encode with VNR 0 or VBR 1. On most tracks VBR 0 or 1 files are only around 1 MB bigger than VBR 2 files, so thats not that hard. And XLDs defined maximum, CBR 320, will highly increase the filesize compared to VBR 1 or 0, which all sounds equal - and all sounds better than VBR 2 on difficult parts of classic musique. ANOMIA As I've said before this is the most indispensable lossless music app for the mac out there; and it's free! I have a small suggestion to make however; if files could be processed and numbered sequentially with a preceding zero, that option would be icing on the cake... thanks (Version 20080706)

XGRAPE I love this app. It's great for converting flac audio to apple lossless. And if you have a multi core Mac, I suggest going into the preferences and setting the max thread count to the number of cores you have. For instance right now I'm encoding 4 files simultaneously, one on each core :) (Version 20080330)

PORTERLU XLD is superb. I have two functionality issues however: 1. Using a cue sheet, I can't get XLD to split a FLAC file into Apple Lossless. No problem converting to WAV or AIFF (I haven't bothered trying lossy formats) so I will then just import into iTunes and convert it from there (there must be a more reliable app for that but I haven't found it yet). 2. Also regarding cue sheets... isn't there a way to generate new (or append the old) cue & log files for the newly created files and integrate a multi-pass checksum verification function? BDKENNEDY1 I don't know what happened with this version, but it decodes my FLAC files to Apple Lossless 3 times slower than the previous version. I know this because I had just used the previous version on the same files 5 minutes before I updated the software. Also, one of the files didn't encode. This may not seem like a big deal, but if you're encoding a lot of files and aren't watching the screen, you could wind up with a lost song. (Version 20080313a)

VERYCARLA Let me start by saying I love XLD. It's a great little tool and it gets a lot of use. There are a few things I could hope for from a future version though. First would be sorting. That is, when I specify an output directory (say, ~/Desktop/Encodes) and then drop a bunch of files on XLD, it would be nice if it could sort them into folders (i.e. Artist - Album). Does this make sense? The other feature I'd like to see is the ability to override the LAME settings with a custom string. (something like -V 7 --vbr-new) That, or extend the slider to 320k... Anyway, it's nothing pressing! Just some suggestions! Thanks for the great (and FREE!) app! (Version 20070917)

HELPER1 Thanks for this tool it will be useful for a few things If i may though I was a bit disappointed that it would not open shn (which is another Lossless compression) or karaoke (cdg -don't really care about that one though) files. If i might suggest for future is to also allow one to compress music files and or directories with the app. That would be ideal ... both compression/extraction and playing if need. Thanks again for this great work it will be useful to many including myself. (Version 20070628)

| Aug 10 2007 |
VERYCARLA Max is indeed a worthwhile application, but it's different from XLD. XLD, as far as I can tell, exists mostly to transcode existing lossless files into other formats. Max is more of a ripper/encoder. They're both great, and they're both in my Applications folder (along with xAct, another useful audio conversion tool). (Version 20070728)

EUKON That is exactly what was done only files needed to be decoded were in ape, so I opened "ape" After decoding into aiff: 1/ the original files were eliminated (although I marked the box in preferences to keep the original files) :(:(:( 2/ the converted files are not reproducible in none of the players. They only make a horrible hissing noise! :(:(:( (Version 20070504)

ANOMIA Wow sounds like maybe you had bad luck-or a bad cue file?-you need to contact the developer directly and provide as much information as you can - including the files, so this can be reproduced. I'm sure if it IS reproducible, the developer will want to fix the problem - just don't expect them to tell you how silly you were for making such a simple error. You aren't giving them any chance though, are you? You assume that your ignorance is the developers fault and score this perfectly wonderful programme low marks!? Please try again, you will eventually grow up... (Version 20070628)

M CHANG Having a problem with converting FLAC to Apple Lossless. The files -- when transferred to 30GB video iPod -- force the iPod to restart (to black screen with Apple logo). Prince's Purple Rain -- Track 1 crashes 1 second in. Track 2 seems to play (for first 5 seconds, then I switched ot next track). Track 3 crashes in 1 second. Same for first track of Pet Shop Boy's Fundamental. I had a similar problem with Max (not the most recent version), where FLAC or other formats converted to Apple Lossless would result in a file that would play one second or so and then skip to next track. The most recent version seems to fix. (Version 20070214)

Well at the developer site it shows a command line way to do just that! Trouble is I can't do command line(actually, won't is nearer the truth), so I have to ask the developer(nicely) is it possible for the next GUI version to allow for a music .cue and log file to be generated along with the FLAC (tracks or disk file)? thank-you!
