RPPHOTO  I like this funny app, which also actually works. Never seen an app grow in version numbers so quickly, already at number 5. It does get alot of updates, though.

PAUL YOUNG  You may not have noticed that the "Darkness" slider also dims the picture. You can make the picture completely impossible to see if you move this slider to the far left. Bring the slider up until the picture is just visible.

PAUL YOUNG  Robert, excellent question on timing. The on-screen time is the time that the information is sent to the screen but different displays have different response times. A flashed message on a slow display will be slower to decay.

ROBERT  With which CPU and graphics cards do the timing selections test as accurate for pictures?

Every setting seems the same--actually the shorter settings seems longer, though this may be because of my expectation that they be less noticeable. I find every image readily recognizable and quite superliminal. Images are even more intrusive by the white background that is flashed around them to fill the entire screen.

Oddly, pictures must be kept in a fixed subfolder of ~/Documents instead of a selectable folder or even a subfolder in... ~/Pictures. To make your images available to the program, you can make an alias to your folder of images, move it under ~/Documents, and rename it to "SMPictures".

CHRIS REDDEN  Open up system preferences, go to displays and check the refresh rate your monitor is running at. Divide 1000 by your refresh rate. This number is the smallest increment, in milliseconds, that your monitor is capable of displaying a message for.

For example, a refresh rate of 60 Hz gives an increment of 16.7ms. This means the shortest amount of time the message can be displayed for is 16.7ms. The next increment up would be 33.3ms. The next would be 50ms. The slider in this application gives you the illusion that you have much finer control over the timing than you actually do, because your monitor only refreshes itself a fixed number of times per second (usually in the 50-100 range).

HEATHERMASON  Um... do subliminal messages work if you are the one who programs them for yourself?

PAUL YOUNG  Text messages are limited to 24 characters by design.

BARTELOMEUS  Long sentences do not work as subliminal messages. Only pictures or simple words. And simple words work only for a short time.

WAKAYAMA  great little app, does one job, and now very nicely with the text over all apps.

Can I make a request though, and have the duration last longer? Say up to 500ms or eevn 1 second. Not subliminal I know, but nevertheless a great tool for language learning (trying to grasp a sentence with kanji and hiragana in 25ms, or even 50 is beyond my tiny brain)

cheers, and keep up the great work - it's appreciated!

PAUL YOUNG  There is an unadvertised feature of Subliminal Message Pro that some may like.

If you hover your mouse in the top right hand corner of the Control Panel window, messages are displayed for one second, regardless of the slider setting.

HULLBODY  I used similar software on the pc for quite a while. Cool stuff. This software has a major flaw and that is the ability to write a long string of text...like a full sentence.

I'd pay for such software

PAUL YOUNG  Messages are flashed whenever application is running; you can minimize the Control window and still see the messages. That is the expected use of Subliminal Message.

CHRISTEFANO  Messages don't appear when the application is hidden. The only way to "hide" Subliminal Message is by minimizing the main window to the dock.

On a different note, Subliminal Message works just fine with VirtueDesktop's workspaces.

Thank you for this fantastic program. I'll report if I notice any effects over the next few weeks.

GCOGHILL  This is getting better. The new display method is perfect. A few things I think are missing though:

- the Prefs need a way to preview the settings for the opacity. Perhaps a checkbox to show the message with the current settings while editing.

- the Messages window is not very user-friendly. It needs to have Groups & checkboxes for both groups & individual messages so one can turn on and off stored messages. The default list is odd (what is up with the "lonely" item?) and should be it's own group. Also need a way to shift & command select multiple items to delete.

- messages need to allow for a longer length. The current limit doesn't allow for more than a few words. I'd like to get a sentence or two in there.

- I'd also like to see a prefernce for longer on screen settings, where the message might not be so subliminal. Would be nice for motivational quotes & such. A fade in & fade out would be nice for the longer settings.

- On-screen message is not centered (at least not on my MacBook). It's a bit to the left and above center.

Would even be cool if you could set separate prefs for certain groups, allowing certian messages to appear on-screen longer & darker, with longer intervals (15, 30, 45 & 60 mins) while simultaneously allowing other groups to use alternate settings (5, 10, 15, 30 seconds) with different duration & opacity.

Enjoying the development on this project, I think the dev is on to something cool here.

GCOGHILL  What this thing needs is a bezel (similar to when you change the Mac's audio volume) that flashes a *customizable* message at not only the speed, but the interval set by the user. Using Growl maybe?

Should be text only (no gray outline) or at least customizable (size, color, transparency etc. for both text & bezel box)

Clicking on those buttons isn't very subliminal at all. Needs to do it's thing while you are doing other things on your Mac.

MACLOVER1.1  I wouldn't be so blatantly arrogant as the person in the post below as to say this or that does or does not work... I live in a world that is a little less black and white... Wikipedia is a little more open-minded... open your mind... open your mind.. open your mind.. and let me stick my... thought in there... LOL

Anyway funny little app... I'll give it a try.. I'm a good sport LOL

FRED3RIK  I was just saying that despite numerous efforts, there has never been any conclusive proof that subliminal messages have any effect on anything.

This app looks fine, I'm just expressing my scepticism towards subliminal messages. By the way, I could see the message, even when set to the lowest amount of time.

FRED3RIK  Subliminal messages don't work. They do nothing at all, and the study that everyone refers to was proved fake, and the guy admitted it himself.
