NUBNUB  Same problem.

Macbook pro 13". Deleted using fan control instructions. Also reset SMC. fan will not increase speed even at 70c. Reinstalled. and fan turns back on. This needs to be fixed.

Also, what happens if i want to reformat my computer? Will i need to install fan control again? Will the firmware be reset if i reformat my computer?

STEVE BURNS  This is a great app!! Problem I have is that it will not ever set the fans to the max rpm of 6200 for my MacBook Pro 15" unibody. Seems only to get to about 5800. The red line on the graph in the system preferences control panel even indicates it will never use 6200.

Anyone got any solutions?

thanks!

MAX Z.  I noticed that one will have problems with uninstalling this program and restoring the original system settings. I highly recommend to use this program if you are using a laptop, because it drastically cools down the CPU.

So to solve the problem of not restoring system settings after erasing the program, all one has to do is to set the cooling preferences to the Apple settings (1500 RPM, Lower Th. 50°C, Higher Th. 80°C) and then erase the application.

Have fun. And stay cool.

SNERDWARE  I've generated 2 new versions of Fan Control, one for the Intel-based iMacs and one for the MacBook/MacBook Pro which has some extended control capabilities over the original Lobotomo Fan Control version. For screenshots and (free) downloads (with source code) see:

iMac Fan Control

Extended MacBook/MacBook Pro Fan Control

The iMac version allows separate sensors to drive the control of each of its 3 fans and the extended MacBook/MacBook Pro version allows fan-control via the CPU and/or GPU temperatures (useful if you play games on your laptop). There are also some other minor enhancements (see the ReadMe files).

I've also tried to make it easy to adapt the source code for other systems ... e.g., a version for the Mac Pro that uses different sensors to control different fans (or groups of fans).

Hope these are useful to others.

HUBBERBUBMAN  I wanted to add to my previous posting that I could identfy FanConrol as the culprit.

I deinstalled it completely, reset the SMC and ran my MacBookPro 2 weeks without it.

None of the earlier described symptoms showed up.

Though the Computer was a lot hotter.

So I decided to reinstall FanControl and deal with it´s failures. Just have one right now. However.

If someone can help me, please speak up!

HUBBERBUBMAN  FanControl - Fans out of control!!!

First of all - FanControl is a brilliant product which is essential for those using a laptop.

But i´ve experienced quite strange problems lately:

The symptoms are the following: Sometimes without any indication of cpu- stress or high ram- use, high temperatures of the CPU or GPU, the fans start speeding up until their maximum (6000m rpm) and remain in that condition forever or quite a long time.

FanControl does not seem to work at this time . It´s readings do not correspond to the behavior of the fans.

Almost everytime i have to shut down the computer an let it rest for several minutes. A immedient restart would leave the fans spinning at the same (maximum) speed.

I´m running a MacBook Pro (santa rosa, 2007), Mac OS X 10.5.3.

I think FanControl needs an update - pleaze Mr. Developer??

thanks for your help in advance

IBELL63  DO NOT USE this app! This app will permanently effect your system's fan control settings even after you uninstall it. I uninstalled it and my system no longer changes it's fan settings according to the load automatically. For the time being, I am using smcFanConrol to keep my system from overheating. From what I have found, the way to fix this is to restore the firmware for your machine, but I have not been able to find the proper firmware disc for my Particular MacBook Pro, (MacBookPro3,1), so I havn't been able to restore my firmware. If anyone can help me, please reply. Much help would be greatly appreciated. Mac Update should pull this app, and the developer should pull it until this potentially catastrophic issue is fixed.

GREGLYNN  Fan Control 1.2 works great on my MacBook Pro 15" Core Duo 2.0GHz. Was running 164F or hotter prior, now when set to better energy savings plus the fan control, I am seeing consistent 144F, which is a huge win on longevity for certain components such as the battery and hard drive. Fans run 3500-4200 speeds, so there is white noise whereas prior there was no noise, but in a room where the tv is on, you barely hear the fans and the sound is not annoying. Also the top area around the track pad is not heating up like it used to, another thermal win. I left the baseline fan speed at 1500, reduced the max temp to 158 and left the low temp at 122. Now fan life may be lessened, but with a 3 yr warranty, let em fail :-) They really should not fail if the QC was done right, but fans are a weak point in PCs.

**...

JIMN  I recently got a MacBook Pro 15" C2D for business use and have noticed it seemed to run hot. After reading several articles about fan control, I followed one of the links and downloaded Fan Control 1.1. Great little utility and interesting how it graps out the fan RPM vs machine temp, etc., nicely written and fairly easy to use.

However, after running it for about a month, I noticed that the MacBook would randomly run the fans at maximum RPM for no apparent reason and once I launched the Fan Control utility under System Preferences, it seemed to start cooling off. I have no idea what caused this over heating issue or the fans just randomly spinning at higher RPMs with no heat issues, its hard to tell.

That being said, I also noticed that sometimes when I close the lid of my MBP to put it in my bag, I seems to keep running and one day, I noticed it had been running for about an hour and when I pulled it back out, it was HOT! I had to do a hard shut down and pray nothing was damaged.

Since that time, I had my MBP running on my desk with it open and after it had been asleep for several hours, noticed the fan was on and seemed to be warm as well. I again launched System Preferences and looked at the Fan Control utility and once loaded, the MBP seemed to quiet down again and return to normal.

I don't know the reasons for why I'm seeing such eratic behavior but they all seem to lead to Fan Control so I had to unload it and look for alternatives. This utility may work for some and maybe is only intended for MacBooks and not MBP's but I didn't catch that in the setup. In either case, I'm going to refrain from loading it again and if you have an MBP, I'd seriously consider the alternatives.

Regards,

JimN

EVVN   Since I installed this program, my fans have been running loudly even at low speeds on my new white Macbook. After completely uninstalling it, 1800 rpm (and even 1500 rpm) are very noticeably loud, where previously at those speeds they were pretty much completely silent.

I was wondering if there is some way that I can restore my Macbook to the way it was before, since uninstalling it and then installing smcFanControl to restore apple's defaults didn't seem to take the problem away.

It still runs cool, so the fans must obviously be working, I just don't understand why they're so much louder now.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

NIGHTRIDE  So for those who are wondering why the right fan reading is 0 or -1:

If you have a MacBook pro, do a hardware check, write down the error code if any, and bug Apple.

If you have a MacBook, no worries, your notebook has only one fan sitting in the middle. Thus the left fan is actually the one and only fan your Mac has, disregard the right fan reading.

PEANUT BUTTER  Using it on a MacBook Pro (Core2Duo) and it works great.

It's a bit quirky to figure out the settings at first, but once you get it, there is an ah-ha moment and you really get it.

Great "fine" control over the fan speed.

I tried all of the other fan apps for the intel macs and this is the best. Cyclone offers temp in the menubar, and that's it's only advantage...if that is what you really want. Otherwise the cyclone interface is worse than fan control.

It would be nice if this were a separate application, so that I could monitor like Activity Monitor rather than opening and taking over the sys prefs.

HEMENWAYC  MacBook Pro fan noise: I read a tip on another site that fixed this problem for me instantly. Go to activity monitor and look at what's taking up all your CPU power. In my case, it was a Powerpoint document I had open that was heavy with graphics -- 99.9% of my CPU! I closed the file and the fan powered down. Another person had an Airport program open (one that wasn't related to actually using Airport), closed it, and the fan problem went away. I did download Fan Control but couldn't see any difference when I played with the settings. Some (not too Mac-friendly) programs may be making untoward demands on your hardworking, willing-to-please Mac! Kick these three-day-old guests out of the house!

MIJ  do NOT ever install this app on a MacBook Pro Core2 Duo.

My MBP was working fine when I installed it. I did it because it was appealing.

However, don't know on the other machines, but my fans began to behave crazily after I installed this cr*p.

The right fan fires from 0 to max speed indeterministically. It sometimes stops after few seconds, sometimes lasts minutes, no matter if the machine was powered up 30 seconds ago.

I tried to uninstall the program and nothing changed. I tried to reset the default parameters and nothing changed. FanControl has probably modified parameters in the firmware itself.

I'm now going to return my MacBookPro to apple for repair.

O5220803  Easy to use and for most of us, you just leave it alone. However, it's nice to have an ability to control the fan for special computing needs. Fan Control works well with the Mac mini and appears to be very accurate in its temperature and rpm reporting. I especially like its threshold graph. Does a nice job of monitoring and controlling the temperature of my CoreDuo mini. Does not corrupt Apple's cooling fan limits. The only minor issue I have is that I'd like a working RESET and Enable/Disable buttons.

TODD MARCH  This little bit o' software works wonderfully. It can significantly lower the temperature of your Macbook (Pro). I've been using it for over a month without a glitch of any kind...

I wonder though, if it will affect (shorten) the life of the fan. And since it works so well for keeping the CPU much cooler--why hasn't Apple implemanted it into the system...?

I'll keep using it, though. For a 20-30 degree in temperature, a new fan down the line is much more affordable than a new motherboard...!

JAY PATEL  Hi... I have owned Mac book pro for about 8 months now.... I thing it is one of the first one that come out.... one with all kind a problems ... battery, noise and also temperature problems... I mean u name it and I had it... it took me long time to fix all those problems ...first I call apple support addressing all the issues; apple replaced my battery (recall). I thought it might fix my entire problem. But sure I was wrong. I have tried at least 50 website (updates) to fix those problem. Then I downloaded quite mbp 1.1 which is awesome (used for 6 month) it fixed the noise problem, but it come with battery draining problem. At last I fix all the problems by using 2 programs, shhMBP 1.0 and fan control 1.1. Both of this programs are awesome, easy to use, doesn’t drain battery.

POWERPAGE.ORG  What a great utility!

Fan Control is a prefpane than goes into your System Preferences and requires a restart after installation whereas smcFanControl is a standalone application.

Instead of only setting a fan RPM speed (like with smcFanControl) Fan Control 1.1 allows you to set an upper and lower fan threshold in degrees for your MacBook Pro.

The software then dynamically adjusts the fans speeds to keep your MBP the temperature that you want it. Plus it uses a nice GUI with a graph to show you what is happening.

I set my base fan speed to be 3500 RPM (the max) and the upper and lower thresholds to be 104 and 158 degrees (the minimums) and my MBP (2.0GHz, week 7) barely breaks the 100 degree mark (according to CoreDuoTemp).

My previous temps were consistently 135-165 degrees.

A little fan noise is small price to pay for a MUCH cooler running MacBook Pro.

This software is required for all MacBook Pro owners and should be acquired by Apple and bundled into the Energy Saver System Preference.

FLYING_MEAT  I think this software is absolutely awesome. It seems like a no brainer for Apple to provide something like this in it's future OS products under the Energy Saver preferences or something.

Thanks Lobotomo! You deserve to be compensated for this one. :)

I do not know if there are risks associated with setting the sliders incorrectly (or if that's even a possibility, since I'm not likely to try that ;) ) so that is the reason for the, perhaps harsh, 4 star in Ease of Use. :P :)

FLYING_MEAT  i did think it worked well. that is why i'm back for more of the fan control goodness.

what i discovered on my own machine is that i could no longer shut down. after singluser fsck, permissions repair, some forced power offs, and log checks yielded little information as to how to resolve the problem, so being the terminal-geek-wannabe that i am, i issued the "shutdown -h now" command that allowed me to discover the problem. fan control (or some sibling) would not terminate normally. i then issued kill -9 for the process in question and was greeted by the resumption of my shutdown.

I removed the startup item and prefpane when i rebooted and i was able to shut down normally.

i then went to the fan control site and discovered the 1.1 release. i installed it and have not had a problem since.

all of this is not to say that everyone will have issues like i described, or that something else mangled my shutdowns and fan control was just a symptom, but that is "a reason" why "i" got the 1.1 release.

i recall seeing somewhere that there might have been discrepancies in the readings presented in the previous version, so there might be another reason someone might want to get the 1.1 version.

aren't you glad you asked? :)
