DORKYPANTS  1.11.3.28708 appears not to work on Tiger (10.4.11)/Intel. The CoolIris icon previously installed in Safari (4.0.3)'s toolbar disappears, and there's no evidence of CoolIris in Google Image Search results. Reverting to 1.11.1.26925, which continues to work fine.

WILE E.  While I don't rely on many plugins for Safari this is one I can't do without. It has never caused any grief for me in the way that some poorly written InputManagers can.

It is an elegant visual and navigational aid, in the Cover Flow style, for most any content you can view online.

Support has been stellar. When Safari 4 (final) was released it broke the CoolIris version available at that time. I wrote to support and received a reply right away and another notice when an updated version was released a few days later. Excellent work.

WILE E.  Your comments don't really qualify as a review but I would suggest you go to CoolIris Support and send them all your info. Their support is very responsive. Perhaps your trouble is something specific to your setup. I don't see any high CPU use, in fact it is quite small for me on Safari. I don't usually use FireFox but do have it and have downloaded the FF version to try out.

ICONZ113  well from what I understand safari 4 (not beta) now treats plugins as an exterior module not connected to the browser itself, so if plugins fail, the browser will not crash only the plugin would, allowing the browser to continue to function. In the past plugins would cause the browser to crash.

IOWAPIPE  I am not so sure this is compatible with Safari 4 (not the beta). I have been running S4 for two days now and several times the app has crashed, complaining about coolIris (once directly in a window) and a couple times in the logfile. I just thought I would write this comment and see if others had similar thoughts.

Just wanted to let everyone know that Version 1.8.2.4688 is still the best as far as I think (and also since we don't get hulu in Europe :-((( ).

Still an awesome app---just a little bit reached by the new Safari beta, don't u think?

JAZZADDICT  Just tried it out for the first time. It looks interesting. It would be cool if it had more advanced searching features like Devonagent. I liked using it for image searches and facebook but I don't like using it for shopping. Maybe if it had really good pricegrabber support I would check it out again for shopping. Anyway... it's a cool gooey but needs a lot more functionality for me to actually keep using it and remember it's there.

ROBERT  I'm pretty amazed at the performance of this on my iBook (900MHz G3, 10.4.11).

Developers of any eye-candy sort of app are quick to drop support for 10.4... but G3? Wow. It is totally usable and useful on it, it actually saves time if you do Google image searches and the like.

(I, too, had tried PicLens, and wasn't so impressed with it at that time.)

ZO219  Cool Iris has been the cause of frequent Safari crashes, both this release and previous Safari. Unfortunately. It's gorgeous. Tested my plugins (others are Glims and SafariStand) and this is the culprit.

This has been going on, then, for a while. I'm surprised dev hasn't picked up on this by now. Until it improves, cannot use.

TOMDOHERTY  I agree, an absolutely brilliant app which unfortunately ground my system (PowerBook G4 OS X 10.4.11) to a halt. Removed the 'CoolirisWebKitPlugin.plugin' from the Internet Plugins folder and the 'Cooliris' folder from the InputManagers folder and hey presto!! problem solved. I can't wait for the developer to solve this issue.

ERIC  Be careful with plug ins ... and any app that interlaces with any apple app ... because this is where you can run into problems with conflicts on updates.

Safari quit working for me after an update and it took me 3 weeks to figure it is was a conflict with piclens. As soon as I removed it ... bingo ... back to normal.

Not saying this isn't a good app ... but be warned.

ROOSTER  I used this when it was called PicLens on the PC. I really liked it and never had any problems with it. Along with their other product CoolPreviews it was great. I tried them both out in FireFox on a couple of my Macs and found them to be OK but I really wanted to use Safari and development/stability seemed to be a bit off in Safari. The last version of CoolIris (aka PicLens) was right on in Safari...it beat the heck out of browsing through pages of Google thumbnails looking for pictures and having to wait for another page to load and have a look at the picture. This is a great add-on to any browser and OS combo. it could use a little more user control/configuration but the concept is solid and a real improvement from an end-ser experience perspective. I have read of few of the other comments and I agree that i don't like the fact that it relies on input managers...for Safari...but is that the fault of the developer or the lack of an integrated plugin system in Safari to allow for feature expansion? I don't know! I think it fairly good and petty stable. blah...blah...blah :-)

LTOMKO  I too have had problems with CoolIris seeming to create a runaway process. To remove the software go to /Macintosh HD/Library/InputManagers and remove the folder with CoolIris in the name. Also go to /Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins and remove the WebKit plugin with the name CoolIris in it. Substitute the name of your system hard drive for "Macintosh HD". You will have to do this from an admin account or put in an admin account name and password when asked for one in a dialog box. Reboot after doing this.

CREAGB  Same problem as Stormchild. High-end iMac with plenty of memory. After installation it ran wonderfully for about 5 minutes, then massive destruction. Machine was completely unusable. No uninstaller. Like a trojan horse. Looks great. Deadly. I have lost two days so far trying to get this off of my machine. Nothing on developer site to suggest knowledge that this is a problem.

Symptom: Machine will be running fine, then almost instantly grind to a glacial pace. And I mean glacial. Ten minutes for a click to register. A hard restart is the only apparent way out. Simple uninstall of plugin does nothing and no documentation on how to back out.

Advice greatly appreciated.

STORMCHILD  This is brutally bad software. Not long after installing it, Safari slowed to a crawl and started beachballing, and shortly thereafter, all my other apps started to lock up, until I completely lost control of my machine. Couldn't even SSH in from another box. Eventually I had no choice but to force it to reset.

Since it's an Input Manager plugin, it quickly infects every program you launch after installing it. I ended up having to do a second forced reset soon after the first one. And there is NO UNINSTALLER and no instructions for uninstalling it either. You have to find all of the files it sprayed all over your system and remove them all manually. And then you have to reboot -- again -- before you can actually remove the files from the trash.

Awful, awful, awful. Stay away from this junk.

DB  I concur. But the uninstall is fairly simple - just trash the Input Manager plugin. But the real pain in the ass is losing the Safari set-up, tabs, windows, etc. ... have to reload pretty much everything. Looks so nice at first though, 'til Safari goes belly up. Haven't tried it with Firefox yet but I'm leary of it as it is having had such a poor experience with it multiple times so far. I kept thinking the latest update surely must have fixed this, again and again, and always got burned - I'm not touching it now, at least not until I read that it finally works as advertised.

CREAGB  I followed Stormchild advice and used command line to remove all instance of Cooliris. Had to use sudo to remove the Cooliris bundle. This is way too technical a requirement to uninstall an app. However, at the end everything returned to normal with no impact on my Safari settings.

This is actually fairly straight-forward and should be documented. I am a cookbook follower at this level, so this should be documented by someone who actually knows what they are doing. I can guarantee that it could be a script, so I do not understand why the "Uninstaller" script was not included.

STEVEN GOODHEART  Whoa! This plug-in is stunning -- and incredibly useful. The first time I did clicked and grabbed to scroll to the right in the image gallery in a Google Image search, I was totally blown away by how the gallery tilted and rolled and flowed to the right as smooth as butter.

But it's not just a visual tour-de-force, it's really, really useful for a quick scan and look of dozens, even hundreds of images. (How I wish I'd had this when I was doing image research for science textbooks I was working on, when I'd literally looks at hundreds and hundreds of images a day!) Of course, not every kind of site is supported, but enough good ones are to make this plug-in really worthwhile for many folks.

I really like the Safari CoolIris's overall UI too. The only plug-in for Safari that even comes close to being this cool visually (and useful) is History Flow, part of the amazing, must-have SafariStand plug-in suite. The plug-in has also been rock-solid on my Intel iMac with Leopard 10.5.4 and gracefully tells you when a particular site isn't supported.

(Funny, while the website calls this plug-in "CoolIris (formerly PicLens)" the Mac Firefox 3.0 version add-on calls and installs itself as *PicLens* NOT CoolIris. In fact, you can still get the earlier CoolIris FF add-on called Cooliris Previews, but this shouldn't be confused with this new add-on that does the neat scroll/gallery 3-D display. Jeez, did that make sense?)

Anyway, CoolIris 1.8.0 etc. for Safari is a remarkable plug-in that I recommend to anyone.

DGOMBAU  Very easy to use (once you figure out which sites it will work on, eg flickr). Nice to see images full screen.

Like many others in forums, I found that after installing, I had freezes with Safari, and in fact the whole system, requiring the hard shutdown and reboot.

Removed it from Input Managers folder in the Library, and Safari now seems to be fast and stable again.

Maybe there may be a process I can go through of reinstalling things. But I am not a tinkerer I would prefer life to be simple.
