NEENJA I'm running an early 2008 Macbook Pro Intel 2.4ghz core 2 duo.. I noticed that when I boop up my mac, before running smc, istat pro shows my fans running at rougly 2000rpm. I set my "default" smcfancontrol speed at 4000rpm. When you quit smc, isnt it supposed to set it back to regular default? Which my guess would be 2000rpm, since that is what the mac started with upon bootup. This is not the case, I quit smcfancontrol and check istat, it is still saying that the fans are at 4000rpm. Is this a bug? (Version 2.2.2)

I restarted the mac thinking it would revert back to default fan speeds (2000rpm) and it didnt, it is still stuck at 4000rpm. The only way to get it back to 2000rpm is to do a SMC reset. Is this normal? (Version 2.2.2)

This Rodian is wondering if the SMC Fan Control 2.2 that I downloaded is doing the trick. I have a 2006 Mac Mini with the Snow Leopard OSX, and had the logic board replaced, but now the fan is on full bore at all times. The SMC is telling me that the fan is running at ~5500 rpm's, and I turned down the settings as low as possible, but still loud and cranking! Thank you for any insights,

YABA-DABA-DO ;-) This tip/hint is for the person that says smcFanControl resolved his/her noisy machine. As the story goes about 9 months ago my 20"imac was making and awful noise and i started asking around and figured out it was my right side case fan. My machine was still under factory warrantee so i took it in and sure enough thats what it was. The technician told me the bearing mechanism failed, so by turning up the rpm has some what temporality masked what is a serious problem with your machine!..;-) (Version 2.2.2)

DR. GIRLFRIEND Ordinarily, smcFanControl is a very good app, but I'm having an issue in Snow Leopard that I'd like to make others aware of: SMCFC randomly shuts down without warning. This has happened numerous times after a reboot or after waking the computer from Sleep. It's happened on a clean install of Snow Leopard and I didn't notice until the temps were running quite high on (Original 2006 MacPro) and my fans kicked up a few decibels on their own, alerting me to the problem. Please note: I don't this this is SMCFC's fault; I think this is a Snow Leopard bug as I've noticed other instances of the O/S not remembering various preferences (keyboard modifier keys, Wacom tablet settings, etc) or apps that I've set to open automatically at login. Hopefully Apple will have a fix soon. In the meantime, keep an eye on your system because SMCFC isn't 100% stable on Snow Leopard yet. (Version 2.2.2)

JERSUCH Hi, I installed the app on my new macbookPro with core2duo processor. when i set the settings to High RPM and saved it, it activated and i hear the fan accelerating but when it has reached 5000rpm it reduces it speed automatically back to the default macs speed. Also i only see the exhaust and no other fans, is this normal?

POOHSTICK Re. smcfancontrol: I like Apple menu menu, but found installation not so perfect. In these days of spyware, I need every reassurance of integrity, this app seems a bit tatty (hence not so confidence building). But it seems to work well. My use is on 09 Mac Pro 8 core on Leopard 10.5.8. I find that playing any sound roasts the CPU. The smallest sound play can cook Core A up to 90C. Internet radio (Firefox or Safari) can leave temps high (this under virgin Leopard 10.5.8) until app quit. However Quicktime Player sound causes temp jump until sound stops, then temps decline. This seems a serious MacOS bug. Testing with 100% load on 16 cores for several minutes only got the temperature up to 61C (no smcfancontrol). I made 3 settings for smcfancontrol, names 1, 2, 3, ... Each higher fan settings. So I can easily boost fan as temps rise. It would be useful if i could see my setting number in the Apple menu. Anyone have pointers to temperature limits for Nehalen CPU? Or links to info relating to 2009 Mac Pro sound/heat problems? I like smcfancontrol, thumbs up to developer and I hope he continues to refine it. I'd quiet like to see a graph of historical fan speeds overlaid with temps, but perhaps this is more in Temperature monitor's domain. Of course I'd like fan speed to automatically respond to hardware temps, but that is the OS's responsibility. Apple seems buggy or weak in this area. (Version 2.2.2)

MVANDERGRIFT I'm glad you wrote this comment. I thought I was the only person having problems with my 2009 Mac Pro 2.93Ghz (4 core). Any sound playback through any application drives my CPU up well into the 70Cs. The BOOSTA fan does not increase to cool the CPU. I've had several kernel panics while the CPU was this hot. Intel's documentation indicates that 75C is past the safe operating temperature for the chip. Let me know if you find any information on this problem.

JIPSTER Downloaded and tried on My Mac Mini yesterday. Works fine. The Mini is a previous generation 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo model. Anyway, I still downloaded it thanks!! Any idea what I should set my fans to? The fans are at the same temp as before i downloaded the software. Should I crank em up a bit? KAWAII 0 means that you've made no change. I tend to use the really high fan speed when doing some compressing that takes a long time - although I'm a little paranoid, I do think that Apples specifications sale pretty close to the wind when it comes to temperate control. (Version 2.2.2)

AVIDMCUSER Works great. Just wondering if its normal for the fans to take a long time to spin down after changing the settings back to default values. It is taking approximately 5 - 7 minutes for the fans to reach default speeds from maximum. Is this a symptom of inertia or a hardware pre-programmed decline for a smoother temperature transition? Any ideas would be appreciated. -Aluminum iMac 24" / 2.8ghz C2D / 2gb / 300gb (Version 2.2.2)

STILL_SPARKLING This app is fantastic. A couple of years ago I had a bad experience with an Apple EFI Firmware Update which, after install, made the fans on my MacPro sound like a jet turbine; the sound was ceaseless and unbearable. The Apple tech who worked on my MacPro agreed that the fans were running too high. Luckily, I was still under AppleCare because he ended up replacing the entire logicboard. Ever since then, I've used smcFanControl with great success and never touched another Apple firmware update that "adjusts fan behavior". smcFanControl lets me keep my default fan settings nice and low -- I like a quiet system -- for most tasks, but also allows me to crank the fans up, individually or globally, when needed. It also allows you to easily create and save different profiles; with these profiles you can switch, in one click, to higher or lower fan speeds when you need to adjust the cooling. SMCFanControl is an outstanding addition to my arsenal of essential Mac apps. It's cool that it's free, but if you depend on it every day like I do, you should donate to support its development (especially with Snow Leopard right around the corner). (Version 2.2.2)

NOTAFOOL Sorry, but the newer version is just as bad the previous one. It simply does NOT - repeat NOT - launch on my computer, (Details of my computer and OS are in my first posting). This is extremely disappointing. Quite frankly, I no longer have ANY confidence in this application at all and shall NOT be trying it again. It appears to have been quite inadequately tested on the VERY machines that it purports to have been written for, and is bug-ridden. It has been released far too prematurely and simply does NOT work. BEWARE !! (Version 2.2)
| Apr 21 2009 |
NOTAFOOL This latest version - purporting to have been released today (21 April 2009) - is no better than any of the previous version I have tried. It still totally refuses to launch or do anything whatsoever. It remains a total LEMON as far as I am concerned. I have had quite a bit of correspondence with the Developer and have sent him crash reports, logs etc. So far he has no idea why it doesn't work for me. But it certainly doesn't. And check out his website. Many, many people are having all sorts of problems with it. It is simply NO good. (Version 2.2.2)

Drag smcFanControl to the Dock manually. Then when you have it on your Dock, right-click (or control-click) the icon and select "Open At Login" and then restart the computer. It wasn't launching at startup for me either until I did this manually. See if it works for you. (Version 2.2.2)

NOTAFOOL I did exactly as you recommended STOOPID MONK3Y. Absolutely NO difference whatsoever. The dopey application STILL totally refuses to launch. NOTHIng. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Not even the remotest hint that it is launching. I have given up on this dopey application now. It is a total LEMON as far as I am concerned. I have had correspondence with the Developer, who appears to have absolutely no idea why it will not launch even though I have sent him crash reports etc. I have now trashed this irritating application and intend having NOTHING to do with it. It appears to have more bugs in it than an entomologist's laboratory. (Version 2.2.2)

ST00P!D M0NK3Y Dude, it's working perfectly for me and thousands of others. Don't know what the issue is and I wish I could tell you, but there must be something funky in your system from preventing the launch of this app. If even the developer can't help you, I don't think anyone else can. Maybe wait for a newer release or just ditch the program altogether. The updates seem to be far and few between though so you might be waiting a while. (Version 2.2.2)

NOTAFOOL Every other application on my computer works absolutely fine. I have run both Disk Warrior and Drive Genius over it and both give it a 100% clean bill of health. If my computer is, in fact, "funky", then how come that doesn't show up in any way at all except with THIS particular application ? Never mind. I am quite content to do without SMCfancontrol. It's not such a big deal. But I'm certainly surprised that the Developer cannot offer any suggestions as to why it refuses to work on my computer, even though I have sent him Crash and Log reports. TERMINALMAN Note that this is advertised as "officially supporting" Intel-based laptops only. The iMac seems not yet officially supported, which could account for your difficulties. There were a number of different Intel iMac versions released (three as of May 2009, I believe) and Apple likely changed the fan control interface with each version just as they seem to have done with the new laptop versions. It is likely that the author does not have access to all of the Intel iMac variations, so complaining IN CAPS that it does not work for you is a bit over the top IMO. Particularly for freeware/donationware. This is a useful app, works perfectly on three (different) Intel Mac laptops in my family, and will hopefully soon support all the different "respins" of the Intel iMac. Honestly, software is not so trivial to write when the interfaces you're using "evolves" over time. Been there, done that, got the grey hair to prove it. (Version 2.2.2)

AVIDMCUSER @NOTAFOOL - After attempting to launch the application, did you look in your menu bar? I know you are not a fool but it 'is' the only indication after launch that in fact it has launched and the settings can be configured through the menu bar only as far as I know. The preference window is then launched where you can configure it. --just in case you missed it. (Version 2.2.2)

MACCENTRIC This app has done wonders for my Mac Pro. My northbridge temps were 89c, and that made my machine very unstable. Memory temps were also high, in the mid 70c range. Installed smcFanContol, bumped the fans for CPU, HD and Rear Fan from 500rpm to 1000rpm and my northbridge is now at 48c, 40c degrees cooler. Memory temps went down to 43 to 55 (not sure why the difference between them, A1 A2 B1 and B2 are mid 50s, A3 A4 B3 and B4 are all in the mid 40s). It doesn't seem to control the power supply fan, and that's the highest temp on my system (PS1 is 57c, PS2 is 67c). Much thanks to the authors, I was going nuts with the instability of my system due to the overheating. This is on a Mac Pro dual 3Ghz dual core Xeon with the ATI 1900xt graphics card. It has also helped with random graphics glitches I was having too. (Version 2.1.3.1)

JONATHAN ROWSON I have found this to be extremely helpful. One tip I can offer is to realization that the fan circulates air taken in from the keyboard. This is crucial if you have a keyboard protector like an iSkin (like I have) that will affect circulation. One non scientific test had my MBP running at 160 deg. F, which dropped to 135 with removal of the skin allowing circulation when the fan was trying to drop the temp. (Version 2.1.2)

ALLANT Downloaded this today and as far as I can tell works nicely - unless the numbers are made up. I change the settings depending on whether or not it is plugged in, using a battery, or charging. Temps dropped from ~50C to 42C within minutes when I ran the fans at 4000 RPM. 5000 and 6000 RPM didn't get my temps lower than 39C so why push the system. The only thing I noticed is that at 4000 RPM, I couldn't get it down to 39C. 39C was the lowest it could go for me in the best circumstances The increased noise didn't bug me one bit especially since I use a notebook cooler for added circulation when I'm at my desk. HOWEVER. That being said, my MacPro still ran hot when it wasn't raised off a hard surface (in this case my Brenthaven notebook case). Once I lifted the Mac and allowed a clear path of circulation, temps dropped right back down and my programs ran a lot smoother again. So moral of this story, it doesn't matter how hard yor fans are working if there is no circulation. 4000RPM did it or me. (Version 2.1.2)

GIOFX This small gem is saving my iMac, really. Isnt a secret (try to googling for "smc fan bootcamp" and "overheat"...) the SMC control seems to have some "issues" using bootcamp and Windows partition, in fact the fans stay ever at the default speed, the result is something like 55° (131° farh) HD and 85° (185* farh) for the PSU So: I STRONGLY suggest to use smcFanControl if you use the BootCamp partition for heavy work and gaming, this can save your hardware (at least.the iMac hardware) some comparison playing with and without sfc here: http://www.giofx.net/images/imacfan.png great work! CAPOEIRA4U What minimum speed would you recommend for a 17" MBP C2D 2.4GHz? What if the fan speed is cranked up to 6000 RPM all the time, is that going to damage the fan? My MBP overheats when I play games on Windows Bootcamp too long, but I also don't want to damage my machine by turning the fan on too high. (Version 2.1.2)

IMODULATOR This utility/ app is a panacea for my mind and MBPro. Using VMWare Fusion it was heating up on the Lest side of the notebook and I was wondering if the fan was working... using this app did 2 things: 1. Allowed me to visualize the 2 fans and the temp 2. COOLED down the MBP from 56C to now 46"C an amazing 10 deg C difference (and its free!) (Version 2.1.2)

MUDFLAPPER Great utility. Works without a hitch. I love the the fact that I can set the fans to a high RPM, reboot into Windows, use AtiTool to overlock my video card and play the latest games without overheating. The only things I'd like to see added are the ability to choose the menubar font and change the size. The menubar icon is a little too big and clunky, but I'm just nitpicking. Thanks for this great li'l app. (Version 2.1.2)

TWO2_TANGO Anyone have any idea why my fan control won't work? I have the latest version, but it won't turn the fans on. I had problems with the last version too--it worked for awhile and then just stopped, so my Macbook Pro runs as hot as ever. I've changed the settings, hit apply--nothing. Even though I've specificed Higher RPM in the Active Setting, every time I check, it has reverted back to the default fan setting. Anyone have any suggestions? MNBLUESTATER For Lord's sake, this SAFETY update should be sent along with a mailed DC ROM, automatic email, or postcard, to each and every MacBook or MacBook Pro owner, not just an update that someone might "happen" to run across. Our MacBook was running at 130 degrees, enough to cause scorching on the humaan lap--(yeah, some laptop) and possibly frying everything inside, causing a $300 or more repair bill. That stinks. This problem specifically happened with our IBook G4. I particularly like the fact you can turn it on in a recharging mode, as those recharger plugs are not the greatest, either, for cord heat, and heating up the laptop. Thanks for the update ! ALONGLEY smcFanControl 1.0 worked great and I'll try to revert. smcFanControl 2.0 is a little unpolished. First, after awaking from sleep, I get prompted by smcFanControl for my admin password not once (which would be bad) but twice. There should be no reason to ask for my password twice, and I'd prefer it never ask for my password. Second, I noticed that while smcFanControl was running, my temp was higher than it should have been. When I dropped the menu down, it said the fans were running at their default 1000rpm rate, not the higher 2000rpm rate I had specified. I played around in settings for a few minutes and couldn't get the fans to ratchet back up - I had no problem when I initially installed. So I thought I'd quit and relaunch, but I can not launch the app now! It's not still running in activity monitor, but it will not relaunch. Now I'm sure if I reboot it will launch, but this just is another sign of lack of polish. I've even donated, so I support the app but I will revert to 1.0 until 2.1 comes out addressing some of these issues. But truly thanks for the app! I'm not meaning to be harsh, I loved 1.0 and it works great, and I look forward to 2.1 and will install it immediately! (Version 2.0)

ALONGLEY While I had some issues as reported, I was able to successfully remove the app and re-add it. Since that time I have had none of these odd issues. There is a chance that it was a permissions issue, and there is a chance that I originally ran the app from the downloaded dmg file rather than first copying it to my apps folder and running it from there. In any case, I want to retract my earlier comment and say that smcFanControl 2.0 is working well for me now without wake-from-sleep authentication prompts or other oddness. I apologize for what seem to be user-related issues. (Version 2.0)

DOBES This is the best little free app ever. I've used it for months and it has kept my macbook about 15 degrees C cooler than when it isn't running. When my CPU is taxed, Apple's controls take over and the fan speed increases according to Apple guidelines, but when it is running normally, I can set the fan at a faster speed and it keeps my system cool. Very unobtrusive, easy to turn on and off at will, a great little program. (Version 1.2.3)

GOPHER I am not ever going to use this utility unless it gets an official sanction from Apple directly. The SMC Firmware being what it is, an upgradeable component only by Apple, and the fans being something that are preprogrammed to respond to Apple's Energy Saver settings as well as processor use, I would not want to be the one forcing the fans to work when they aren't supposed to, or forcing them not to work when they are supposed to. If the latter were to happen, my machine might experience a random shutdown if I'm lucky, and if I'm not, it could overheat everything around it. Much better is find some external means of cooling your machine such as a solid metal cookie tray or external USB powered fan pad, or notebook stand. (Version 1.2.3)

in general you are right: The SMC is something only Apple should program. This is why smcfancontrol takes a very conservative root: It only sets the minimum fan speed and does not change the whole programming of the SMC fan controller. So the fan still reacts as apple intended it (ramping up when the machine gets hotter etc.), just the base speed is changed. Als notice that Apple did exactly the same thing (setting a higher base speed) on the newest Core2Duo Macbook (Pro's).

XSMURF I ahve the same thing happening to me t the left fan. Albeit here, it was making a lot of noise for a bit and it decided to give up over the weekend while I was doing some CPU intensive stuff. My Macbook Pro is now on it's way to service (3 hits with one stone, it'll get fix for the whinning noise along with a discoloration of the left palm rest). I doubt running the speed at half their full speed is entierly responsible. It has an effect for sure, but if the fan can run at 6000 rpm, it's meant to run at 6000 rpm. So it should break running at half the max speed. The only reason, imho, Apple uses lower speeds is for sound. (Version 1.2.1a)

OSXI I think this is a brilliant concept and I would like to see it an integrated it into the OS. In my opinion it needs the option to make some settings automatic. I'm concerned that this is the only piece of software out of hundreds that I have that asks for user name in addition to a password in the developer's special format rather than the standard OSX authentication pop up window. Why is this the only one that requires that? The devoper was good about answering the first few eMails but now has been silent. (Version 1.2)

HENDRIK HOLTMANN from the F.A.Q: Why does smcFanControl has it's own authentication dialog and is not presenting the OS X default authentication-dialog? smcFanControl needs special rights for setting the fanspeed. The OS X default authentication dialog would appear everytime you want to set a new fanspeed. So I tried to work around that and the way it works is, I ask for the credentials before the OS X dialog pops up, save the data to keychain and then pass it to the authentication service (just for the ones who want to know). (Version 1.2)
| Oct 17 2006 |
OSXI I appreciate your response, but I still don't understand why you ask for user name when every other app that asks to authenticate already knows the user name only asks for a password.
