ARCHIVEMAC  Works great and is very useful with Leopard.

On Snow Leopard, it seems to have lots of problems as reported in Perian support forum. Most troubling, the forum moderator locked the thread reporting Snow Leopard problems. They do not appear interested in fixing the problems and do not want to hear about them.

Problems in Snow Leopard include:

- Some video types will play with audio but no video

- Some video types will play but very poorly with jumpy video, possibly slow framerate.

- Integration with Frontrow in particular has issues.

- Some video file types cannot be handled directly by QuickTime10. Additional programs are needed as a bridge so that they can handle the file type and pass it to Quicktime with Perian to play.

The end result is that Perian is currently much less useful on Snow Leopard until or if they can fix these problems. Hard to see how anything will be fixed if they don't want to hear about the issues.

I do not know if installing Quicktime 7 solves any of these issues.

GREGMLR  All you hear around cyberspace is how Perian is so fantastic, yet I'm yet to be able to get it to work on my Mac. It states it supports DivX encoded files but I am unable to open them without installing the actual DivX codec from divx.com, after that there are no issues. I've also not noticed any additional playback capabilities as a result of installing Perian without having to download the individual codecs from their respective developers. Seriously, don't waste your time.

ROBOTANK  You must have done something wrong or be having an issue specific to your system. I've been using Perian for years, and it has always worked precisely as advertised. Don't post a one-star review because you're having an issue. Try to get it solved first.

JFFS  Snow Leopard and movies containing AC3 audio.

If you can't get Quicktime X to open a file with AC3 audio, you need to use Command+I to set Quicktime X to open in 32-bit mode. If you don't the AC3 and A52 components included in Perian will not work.

Hopefully there will be a 64-bit version of the AC3 components/Perian soon.

ADMIRAL_POTATO  This little tool is pretty great. I installed it to play back some FLVs in QuickTime Player, and I was _quite_ surprised at how much better(smoother and un-garbled) the video was through this than it had been even when played back through the latest (1.0.1) VLC.

I am even running this on an older machine; a 1.25 Ghz Powerbook G4!

I am IMPRESSED!

Very useful tool!

You will need it for files in the M$ proprietary format .wmv or .wma

I dont like the Flip4Mac installer but for now it is still the only way to go.

LAMPOON  Previously I used VLC and Flip4Mac but after I tried this I deleted VLC and Flip4Mac.

This is a much better codec lib for Quicktime (also works with Quicktime-X).

VLC did not play all my xvid movies with correct sound (hell, sometimes without) but Perian played them all flawless !

I can highly recommend this video codec lib !! All you need imo

MISHA  Agreed. But don't trash VLC so quickly... if you ever move on to media encoded with x264 and stored in a .mkv container, Perian forces you to pre-load the whole thing in QuickTime before you can watch it (which can take several minutes depending on your Mac and file size). VLC will play throws straight away.

GEORGE PAPHITIS  Does Perian 1.1.4 resolve the conflict with iChat AV seen with ver 1.1.3 where you cannot see the person you are connected to during a video chat but they can see you? This did not occur with ver 1.1.2 which I reverted to. Both the Perian developers and Apple are finger pointing at each other as to who is to blame.

AIKOUSHA  Wondering why the fonts in mkv files don't manage to make it through Exporting. They look fine while playing, but on export they turn into plain, large, Helvetica...

Also, be sure to turn off autoload external subtitles when working with the Studio Pro apps, as they hook into Quicktime to do a lot of work, and external subtitles WILL get picked up whether you want them or not.

Now just hoping to see the last of the Indeo codecs, Xiph Audio, and better font control in matroska, and possibly quantized MPEG4 (AVC and Xvid) on Export?

Keep up the great work!

FORMICA  Perian is just terrific. I thank everyone who is involved with this effort for making it possible for my new 2.4 GHz MacBook and older Intel 2.16 GHz 20" iMac (both running 10.5.6 & maxed out on RAM) to play so very many video and audio filetypes seamlessly, and especially for keeping it free! It works great - keep up the good work.

I know this isn't Perian's fault, but the only movie-related problem I have had is the inability to set my Perian-enabled QuickTime Player as the default .flv player. .flv files will play in QT Player, but whenever I try to make it permanent (by doing a Get Info on an .flv file, setting QTP as the Open With app, and then clicking Change All...), it immediately reverts back to MPEG Streamclip as the default .flv player. I don't quite know why this happens because Perian does make QT capable of playing .flv files, so why should the OS resist making that the default?

However, I was able to set Movist as the default .flv player, and that actually works out better because Movist is so unbelievably customizable that I prefer to use it to play EVERYTHING. In fact, today I changed the default player for ALL movie filetypes to Movist because it's so superior to QT (and it too is FREE!).

Anyway, kudos to the Perian developers!

BEANG  i don't know why,

but ever since 1.1.2, Perian freezes up my Quick Look on 10.5.6.

and anything from MPEG-4 to H.264 takes AGES to load with Quicktime.

1.1.3 seems to be the same in this issue-

so, until i'm absolutely sure that this issue has been taken care of,

i'm gonna stick to 1.0. works like a charm.

At first did not realize it was Perian, but noticed that although my iChat still connected for video chats, all I could see was me (not pleasant) and not the person I called. They could see

me and no problem with audio either. Found the answer in the Apple Support forum discussion moderated by Ralph Johns, an iChat wizard http://discussions.apple.com/profile.jspa?userID=208. Kudos to him.

DAVIDSAN  Something very strange is happening with this version of Perian.

When I watch content on my computer with Perian installed, version 1.1.2, 1080p movies loses frames. I have been watching the Star Trek trailer 2 with and without Perian 1.1.2 installed.

When Perian is installed I lose frames. Perian not installed, all trailer is played perfectly.

My computer is a Macbook Pro 17 inch 2.16 Core Duo (No Core 2 Duo) 2Gb RAM.

So I guess, something is wrong with Perian that is using its own H264 codec instead of Apple's.

BRUNO NEESER  Running Perian on a Leopard mac mini 2ghz FullHD core2duo HTPC works well. Some subtitles have problems coming up. I reinstalled leopard and did a fresh install of Perian and got less subtitle problems.

Overall function is very good. MKV videofiles can take time to startup, but once started they run smoothly. High bitrate mpeg files seems to stutter at first, after the initial stutters (usually 5-15 s) video plays well.

I really like the easy installation and problem free (no crashes or hangs) operation of this quicktime codec panel. On my HTPC site www.partaj.nu I have some more hints on setting up a nice HTPC system.

The dedicated team of developers are worth the praise from all users. Amazing set of codecs allows trouble free playback of almost all major formats. I am confident the small subtitle glitch will be fixed soon and then get a solid 5 star rating.

EMET1  Problem: all my avi files took forever to load with QT 7.4.1 & Perian 1.1. Also, Front Row locked up when trying to play them, which was the deal killer for me.

Having spent waaay too long removing other bits from my QT Plugins folder, I realized Perian 1.1 was the last thing I had updated.

So, those who are having issues with Perian 1.1 & Quicktime 7.4.1 (which seems to be a lot of people including myself), fear not. Uninstall Perian in System Prefs. Download Perian 1.0. I got mine from

http://mac.majorgeeks.com/download6011.html

and install. It will ask you if you want to remove the newer version (well, duh), enter your admin password. The Perian pref pane will open. Now click install, admin password again.

I logged out and back in and all my avi files play like buttah. And Front Row and I are best friends again.

I'll keep the 1.0 installer for future troubleshooting.

Hope the awesome Perian guys still feel the love.

I've stopped it by turning off "Check for Updates" in the System Preferences pane for Perian, but I liked the fact that it would warn me if a new version comes out. Is there a way for the check to be disabled if no internet source is connected instead of a little pop-up error?

MACDUDE  I must say that this is a much needed addition to Quicktime. While VLC can play a lot of files, I must prefer the Quicktime GUI and it's much easier to use. In fact, there is a nice table of contents-like addition for .mkv files that makes me believe that it works better than VLC! If it was shareware, I would definitely buy this product...as this has become an application that I can't live without. Open source is the way to go!!

As one suggested, it would be incredible to have Real Media play in Quicktime but as far as I'm aware, that doesn't seem very likely. I personally haven't encountered any problems with this application.

MECHAMANIA  It kills Toast 7, too.

I love this software, but I'll have to go back to .5 until this is sorted out. The new features aren't worth ditching Toast.

Luckily, I archived .5 (perhaps ironically, using Toast), but the developer might seriously consider posting .5 to the site, in the meantime, for those who didn't...

EYETV uses Quicktime codecs to play files, so ill have to re install every codec Perian replaces as well. Brillant Idea that is LOL. no thanks. hopefully the new quicktime 7.2 update has fixed the MKV I couldn't play.

GYD  -Playing FLV and MKV is a good feature but it's not realy important, i maybe have 3 .flv and 20 .mkv for more than 1000 .avi

-Installing Perian is easy but impossible to disable somes codecs, features or change subtitles size/colors

-Perian Crash QT on iBook G4, Power Mac G4 and on a a Power Mac G5 simples Divx don't play anymore

While waiting for a stable version with config options i go back use thoses codecs:

- official divx

- Flip4Mac

- avc1Decoder

- A52Codec

INYAR  As Mikuro said, Perian is a MUST-HAVE.

Since 1.0 and the support of SRT subtitles, it has put QuickTime back as my default video player. And with it, the ability to use all the comfort of applications as Frontrow (wich uses Quicktime). That's simply awesome, since Quicktime is by far (and logicaly) the most beautifuly integrated player in Mac OS X. VLC was great, but I just love to be able to launch Frontrow, to see the film going on in the Dock or all the smooth effects with Quicktime.

And all this thanks to Perian. Only. Because the codecs and video features supported natively by Quicktime is quite disappointing when you have to use it.

The subtitles support is just great, perfectly efficient and flawless. Nothing to do : it automaticaly detects the subtitle file.

What's more, the installation process can't be easier. And finally, it's free and open source.

Thanks a lot to the developpers !

MIKURO  Subtitles are loaded as separate tracks, so they can be enabled and disabled just like any other track.

Under the View menu, select "Show Movie Properties". In that window, uncheck the subtitle track and the subs will disappear.

MIKURO  Perian is a must-have. A year ago I needed 3-5 codecs to do just a fraction of what Perian does...and they didn't do it as well as Perian! Not only does Perian provide the best support for AVI files there is, but it also supports FLVs, MKVs, and subtitle files! QuickTime has never been able to play those before.

Perian is based on some of the same open-source tools as VLC. With Perian, we now have much of the compatibility of VLC married with the power and flexibility (not to mention non-ugliness) of QuickTime. I really couldn't ask for more.

Perian's subtitle support is also first-rate. As much as I love VLC, the way it renders subtitles drives me crazy. They're weak, semi-transparent, and don't seem to respect the styles defined in the subtitle file. Perian's subtitles are gorgeous, and it seems to support the full slew of styling and coloring codes. As far as I know, Perian is the ONLY program on OS X that does this.

Even if you just need to play AVIs, Perian's performance and compatibility are superior to other solutions like Divx.

My only complaint with Perian is that loading MKV files is a little slow. Not slow enough that I'll ever resort to VLC again, though!

Simply put, Perian is the best. Chances are the only components you'll ever need are Perian and Flip4Mac WMV Player.

DOUG S.  Does exactly what it says it does. And, honestly, how many other plug-ins can you say that about? "This does exactly what it's supposed to do each time, every time, no exceptions." With this it's true.

My only wish is that it'd keep up to date with the latest releases for stuff like DiVX. Also, Windows formats support would be nice.

Other than those two, rather minor, things it's flawless!

To answer your question: Demand that Apple do it. It is entirely up to them. AC3 passthrough is outside the scope of a codec or movie importer and falls entirely within the realm of the application (Quicktime Player).

GERBER  Excellent plug-in for Quicktime. Gives access to all the widely used but Quicktime-incompatible codecs like DivX, 3viX, Xvid and various contortions of audio/video combos (MP3 audio with DivX video, for example). A must-have for anyone who visits video sharing sites.

Unlike VLC or Mplayer, both of which offer comparable quality playback, this plug-in makes it all work in Quicktime, which means it also works in all QT-compatible applications. So yeah, now you can download your DivX files and play 'em in Front Row. Go nuts!

Playback is substantially smoother and more trouble-free than other QT components (especially for DivX), and works fine on underpowered Macs. (I have a 1ghz PowerBook G4, and can play back full screen XviDs without trouble.) Again, about identical to what I get with VLC.

As far as I can tell, this package doesn't include encoders, though, only decoders, so you'll need other tools to encode video in these codecs. Also, there are no functions to adjust smoothing or video enhancement as there is in the official DivX QT component and in VLC. The quality shown, however, is just fine.

FOLLEREC  I've been looking around for a package like this for quite awhile now. Windows already has the K-Lite Codec Pack. Thank goodness there's Perian for Mac OS X. This, together with NicePlayer (and Flip4Mac) makes the perfect combination for video playback. It's a little more to install versus just installing VLC or MPlayer, but it seems just a better combination. Particularly on an Intel Mac, as VLC doesn't seem to do well with certain files on Intel yet.
