FORMICA  SpotInside could not find a file that Spotlight and HoudahSpot could. I did a search on "Driver" and "Driver License" to find a scan of my driver's license called "Jay's Driver License.pdf", which is stored in my Pictures file, and SpotInside simply could not find the file no matter what I did, while both Spotlight and HoudahSpot found it immediately.

SAMPLER  Version 1.0.1 The program still highlights individual words when a phrase has been specified. This is a bug.

It is possible to trick the program into finding only the phrase, albeit one file and one line at a time.

With a file selected, hit cmd-F and an undocumented Find window opens.

For example, if you've searched for "brown cow" (no parentheses!), the Find window will have the following search pattern.

(brown)|(brown cow)|(cow)

Erase all but (brown cow) and hit "Find All". Now all lines containing "brown cow" will be highlighted in the list below.

(The parentheses and |'s are regular expression characters).

However this work-around is no substitute for a fix

INGVO  "Save as pdf" is here! Ever wanted to save a list of files as a searchable pdf? With Spotinside you can (version 0.8.2). Many mac users wanted that function wich was built in mac os 9. With Spotinside you can put any set of files or content of smartfolders or folders in one list. Since you can set in the view options what you want to see, there are no limitations, what your printed and searchable pdf will contain. For me this function replaces the following programmes: «Folderlister», «Print Window», «PrintFinder», «Directory Content Printer», and probably some more... Thank you One River Software!!

WOLFEATSWORLD  This is the fastest find (search) utility I think I've ever used!

It allows many search options; it's clean and easy to use, and it blows away the competion.

Thanks to the developer, many times over!

PHALERON  The Help for SpotInside is in Japanese (and has been for several versions now) so I cannot consult it for troubleshooting the following problem:

Textual searches work only for the main hard disc. Searches on peripheral discs bring up the volume directory (folders, etc), but not the files which subscribe to the textual query.

Is it something I am doing wrong, or have others experienced the same?

TUISHIMI  Not sure? I have two external hard drives and it finds files on those?

INGVO  probably your external harddrive is not indexed by spotlight. have a look in spotlight preferences if your external harddrive is in the private section. if you want to find things with spotlight or spotinside, you have to remove the harddrive and let spotlight index it. if you don't want that you can use the programme "easy find".

XYPHER  I work with a lot of documents and this is indispensable. Should have been part of the OS itself. Can't believe the Developer's not charging for it.

SLOB  Add my stars. Excellent, especially for freeware. Just try it and compare it to spotlight. This really does spotlight.

NICOO  Brilliant idea and implementation - the software is still early stage and crashes quite often but it is still early-stage and it is free

RORO01  Spotlight's Daddy!

Forget "find", forget "spotlight" ... SpotInside is the one and deserves a place in everyone's dock. The developer is a star!

ORION MK. V  Brilliant! A great tool to actually see "inside" many files for real search-ability. Crashes quite a bit however depending on the filetype you select in the search results.
