RICHARD TAYTOR  This program has failed on occasion for me. In the present case, I upgraded (from 1.6) and discovered that the latest version (2.1) still has the same problem. BOMArchiveHelper (not to mention tar) has no trouble with the file, which can be found here:

JON555  I've uploaded a passworded .rar file to EasyShare. The password is "jamesbond" (no spaces, no caps). It's a passworded .rar file of The Unarchiver app. I ran a check on the .rar after I made it to verify it worked, and everything checked out. I tried opening it by double-clicking which brought up The Unarchiver asking for a password. After putting in the password, it simply froze and crashed. Here is the link to the file:

FOOFOORABBIT  sitx is a proprietary format but StuffIt is not the only app that can open it. The Unarchiver 2.0 (alpha) can open sitx through reverse-engineering of at least some of the sitx compression algorithms.

If some of you want to play around with an even more powerful (but perhaps buggy) The Unarchiver, head over to the Google Code page for The Unarchiver link on the dev's webpage: http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html

MSWFUJOWDFFYC  The Unarchiver actually does not stall or choke on large segmented files. It unfortunately provides poor feedback to its progress. VERYCARLA  Gotta admit, I'm a little cheesed off with The Unarchiver. It asked me nicely which filetypes I wanted associated with it. I only wanted it to handle stuffit archives, since I don't want to install StuffIt because it takes over every file format and I don't like that.

So what does The Unarchiver do? It takes over every file format anyway.

Screw you, Unarchiver. If I wanted a grabby program that didn't play well with others I'd've installed StuffIt!

ALFRED KAIDA  I have big problems with The Unarchiver and password-protected and/or segmented rar-archives.

The Unarchiver crashes stalls freezes on these.

Has ANYBODY using The Unarchiver had success with this kind of files or any other password-protected or segmented filetypes?

If it doesn't work, why not state that clearly in the description, this is not the stated wonder app, it's crap.

As for now The Unarchiver is just waste of time to the most users, it just doesn't support the modern and now often used archive types.

The Unarchiver, - what for?

Don't spend time downloading this, you will regret it if you expect a working app.

JCRAIG  This is one of my favorite apps. I've had a couple large zip files that got hung up when Apple's built-in app tried to open (updating to Leopard changed my preference to open these files with The Unarchiver). SUBLIMINALTEDDYBEAR  Its a great replacement for Stuffit- which gets to be annoying, as Stuffit tries to take over all unarchiving and requires re-registering for updates. BomArchiver (perhaps you haven't noticed it?) isn't complete. For segmented Rar files one should look up the many free (although not always user-friendly) dedicated Rar utilities. And even though you know you're being ungrateful, you still kvetch anyways!! I think perhaps your nickname should be Old Luser

BAD JOBS - GOOD JOBS  Unarchiver also tries to take over all unarchiving, your prebindings are automatically changed to it, without any further enquiry, and that's not polite, even it it really could work with all the archives it tries to open. But it can't.

I don't think it is ungrateful to criticise features that don't work, even if the app is free. If MS-Word would be free I would criticise it's bugs, that's what reviews are for... No need to call someone luser(loser) for that.

There are tons of semi-finished apps here, the readers should know that before downloading highly promised apps and get frustrated afterwards. I like straightforwarded reviews.

For many people time means money, so the term "free" is relative if you spent time to download and try out none-working apps.

So Peace, Mr. or Mrs. SubliminalTeddyBear...

DOUG S.  Ever wondered why all those other unarchiving utilities either have too many features or not enough or, worse of all, don't support every format?

This isn't that kind of unarchival app. This does every format I've come across and I work in web design, I come across everything at one point or another. It sets itself as the default unarchival app on your computer and you only set it once. It's as fast as any of the default utilities but where they can only do a few formats this does them all!

The only place where this falls is the ability to unarchive all forms of RARs. Certain kinds of segmented RAR files it can't do for some reason, but the majority are not a problem.

Great app! Room to improve (barely) but definitely a must have for any Mac user.

MR MIDNIGHT  I'd like to report a problem: The Unarchiver 1.5 associated a multitude of file types with itself on first start. Now a file is recognized by OS X as a rar-archive, when it ends with .rar, .r00,r01,r02,r03 and so on, as well as .001, .002,003, etc.

The problem is that The Unarchiver cannot actually open .001 files (who are usually parts of a split multi-part file, and need to be opened by Ajoiner or Merger, or any other file merging program) - and since the OS now sees all these files as rar-archives, I cannot teach it to open 001-files with ajoiner, and rar-files with The Unarchiver.

I just checked, and that's still the same in V1.6. It would be great if that could be changed since .001 files in almost all cases are not rar-archives.

Otherwise great program!!

MR MIDNIGHT  Please DON'T!

That is exactly what MacPAR Deluxe does, and it drives me crazy. I'm only waiting until The Unarchiver can finally unpack password encrypted rar's, and I'm throwing MacPAR deluxe into the trash, exactly because it puts all unpacked files into a subfolder every bloody time.

I much more prefer the way StuffIt Expander has been doing for ages - only one file in the archive means file gets unpacked in current folder, many files means it creates a subfolder first.

At least gives us an option too choose, please, dear developer!

what i wish is when extracting multiarhives split files, if i select all and double click it working fine but would be much more better this application need an option to extract all content in one folder... just my lil wishlist... hopefully next release...

overall this is worth for 5 stars!

LOKHEED  Every now and then you get a program that comes out of left field, doesn't deliver anything Earth shattering or revolutionary, and embeds itself on your system, to be used on a daily basis.

Unarchiver is such a program.

A small open source (un)archiving tool that handles a plethora of file types... and does so elegantly and with simplicity.

You won't find any bells and whistles here. No groundbreaking, revolutionary eyecandy. But what you will find is a solid program that does what it is supposed to.

It may crash now and then. It may not support that one elusive archive format, but it's still under development. And for all those that deal in open source already know, is something entirely special in its own right.

Let me congratulate the developer of this program and encourage those that use and feel the same was as I do, to speak up and let the developer know how much his work is being appreciated.

ZWS  This is a great program. It beats the hell out of Stuffit Expander. A suggestion: rename it to something witty that consists of ONE word. There are precious few succesful software titles with two words and perhaps this is the only with 'the' involved. Just a suggestion if you want the wider acceptance than just us hardcore mac software junkies.

Thanks so much for this great software!

- sometimes the expanded file/folder does not show in the Finder until I restart it (maybe because it's so fast?)

- association to BIN files did not work (I had to set it using the Get Info panel)

As already suggested, it would be nice if there was a preference in order to make it handle additional expanding, like mounting DMG extracted files. Better support for passwords encrypted files would be great also.

PEDRO FARDILHA  I like this.

I agree that the standard Apple's BOMArchiveHelper could grow a little up and this one goes that extra step.

What I don't like?

That every time that i click on something it "opens" on the background.

Since there's no icon on the Dock (what I think it's the right way. An "helper" doesn't need one) the first times I didn't even notice that it was working.

Has the same problem (as BOMArchiveHelper )expanding zip files create by the php zip option on some websites.

Stuffit expander opens those well though.

I used a lot of expanders thru out the years but I think this one as a _great_ potential
