INA MAKA  I searched (really) about 4 hours for some way to make easy icons today. I am in the process of setting up my own site (beyond MySpace) and wanted to have cool icons I make myself with Photoshop. I could find NO information that really was helpful, most was way too detailed...and over my head. I thought surely SOMEBODY out there has found an easier way to make icons, that can especially KEEP transparent backgrounds on my images and size them for icons. I stumbled on FastIcns and downloaded it immediately--it sounded just like what I was looking for. It took almost no time to figure it out--it is just so darn cool, people.

I like leaving the cube spinning on my desktop with my last design in it--ready for use in an instant. (You can make the cube bigger or smaller by pressing shift and dragging it.)

The way I use the cube is to put any image onto the cube by dragging it onto the cube (psd images work too). If I am making an icon, I go to the fasticn's edit function and pick "copy as icon" then go to the folder that I want to change and open its icon by right clicking the folder and picking "get info". Then I press the old icon in the get info screen (probably a blue folder icon) and it gets highlighted and ready for the new icon, then I press "paste" and the new icon is created on the folder instead of the unimpressive generic blue folder.

My only problem is that fasticn is just way, way too much fun. My work has been on hold all day as I make one icon after another for all my desktop stuff.

Brilliant design guys! I'd have to say this is the sweetest freeware I have ever used. Good luck on all your inventions!

DRDUL  Great app! Even though it says it's experimental, FastIcns can create Leopard-compatible 512x512 pixel icons (they look great in Cover Flow!).

I knocked one star off the "ease of use" rating because the rotating cube is kinda strange (there's an option to turn off the cube).

MACHSPEED5  i've tried thumbnail pro, pic2icon (on versiontracker) and fasticns. Pic2Icon is my favourite except that sometimes it produces blank icons. It also hasn't been updated in years. FastICNS is great. Thank you for making it free.

A couple suggestions: The 3d cube is distracking and totally unnecessary. A progress bar during batch mode would be great.

PXL  I have not clue what the two comments were getting at! This app is about CREATING icons in the blink of an eye. I think this is a very handy tool to have. My only complaint is the spinning box... looks very jagged. Smooth it out and you'll achieve an eye candy look backed by a productive appeal... to everyone.

JIMW  This may have its uses but I still love Viou. All I have to do is chose a folder containing an app, and Viou from a Contextual Menu, and presto!; the selected folder now has a custom icon of a folder showing the icon of the app. I have yet to find any other similar product that works as simply or well as Viou or is as versatile. What I describe here is just the beginning of what it will do. It is also free but this is one app I would gladly pay for. This is one utility that should be on everyones 'must have' list. It is also available from MacUpdate and if you are looking for Icon utilities, I strongly suggest you look at this as well. Since they do things in somewhat different ways and have different features, they just might complement each other.

JACKWEB  Thanks for making such an easy app to create icons :D

I love the fact that I there's the resource fork option.

My only negative to such a wonderful little app, is that compared to img2icns, http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18369

FastIcns seems to slightly blur the final 128x128 image. Whereas img2icns keeps it sharp (at least that's how it is if I've already resized the image to 128x128 size beforehand).

JACKWEB  Ok I just realised that if I don't resize my pic to 128x128, and leave it at the larger size (512 in this case), it's not blurred.

So I assume that on 128x128 pic, even though it's the right size, there's a resize action being performed, causing blur??

NIQ  Fantastic little app!

I found it really useful because all the icons you download from icon websites are just applied to folders. If you need an .icns file of the icon, just drag the folder onto this app and save!

Brilliant work.

MATTHEW GREEN  interesting, perhaps a good replacement for the ppc only iconverter but that can make windows icons and other things.....you say it supports windows icons but i assume you mean taking windows icons and converting them into mac icons unless i'm missing something of course

feels too minimistic for me and keep having to refer to the help (not really a good idea to have online help) but i think the saving as a resource fork is a great feature

take a look at iconverter (it hasn't been updated in 4 years) and expand on both of these and it will be excellent!

ARVIDTP  Great little utility! Combine with preview in 10.4 to easily change shades of existing icons too (for instance for multiple versions of the same app): drop app on fasticns, copy, do New From Clipboard in Preview, make "Image Corrections", copy, paste back onto FastIcns, save as resource fork file, copy and paste icon to app in the finder! Viola!
