MACUPDATE ADMIN  Developer site has disappeared. Did a google search, found nothing to indicate this software will ever be updated. Of course, anything can happen and often does.

SHAI  Can I reiterate what has been said before... DO NOT install this on Leopard. I had to pull the hard drive out of my Mac Mini and connect to my iMac via USB to delete to offending files. See previous posts about what to do if this happens. AVOID IF USING LEOPARD! IT WILL STOP YOUR MAC FROM BOOTING UP

DOGJ  Does not work on Leopard. @Developer: Would you be so kind as to remove the part where it says 10.4.0 and up? this is not true. You just cost me 2 hours.

MUSTLUVNERDZ  Aweful. I rebooted right after installing, thinking that I might need to do in order to see the effects that were not working properly after the initial install and my BRAND NEW black macbook booted to a blue screen. After I got a new copy of leopard installed on an external drive I had to boot from that, go into the hd on my new macbook and delete all the files just to get my data back. (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=375444) for instructions.

SHAMANJR  PROGRAM DOES NOT WORK ON LEOPARD AND WILL CRASH YOUR MACHINE. Developer will still take $$$ for this program, but has not acknowledged that it is incompatible with Leopard. If you get the blue screen of death, the mac forums tell you how to correct. It took 2 times to bring my system back to operating condition, but no problems now. You do not need another Mac to restore the system, and do not need to re-install Leopard.

KP00RS  go to your home folder, Library, and then to PreferencePanes. Delete the Menufela from there. If you have Application Enhancer installed make sure you have the menufela unchecked. This should work.

SOLSANG  Installing on Leopard - blue screen of login death!

After installing adn restarting, osx hangs on a nice blue screen, mouse cursor active nothing else...

Had not yet used Timemachine or other backup, doh!

Talked with apple support: had to reinstall Leopard, thankfully it kept my settings and files (select install on new location, transfer settings when using the dvd, needs 15gb free space)

Ok, i did see menufela was made for 10.4 or higher, not specifically for 10.5

And i did set "hide menu" before restarting, maybe that was unwise - after the osx reinstall it was still there, so i immediately uninstalled it!

So now youre warned, and adviced to learn a few unix commands if you happen to have the need of deleting some files to make space for a reinstall;)

LEXY  Great app!! Sould already have been in Mac OS X itself.

Strangely enough some apps like Safari and iPhoto don't remember their position at the top but leave a space where the menu was when restarting. Other apps like iTunes does it perfect. Nice at the top of the screen after starting.

Hope that you guys get it fixed soon. After one day of use, I'd never wanna do without Menufela nomore!!!

MUNEY  with menufela running, when I try to use the "open" command from the terminal window, I get an error. this is even for applications that I've disabled. e.g. if I try to open a pdf document (which on my system calls preview), I get

% open tmp.pdf

RegisterProcess failed (error = -2805)

Abort

%

This happens for all applications it seems. I'm running menufela 1.5 on OS x 10.4.8 with the latest updates. I can open files by clicking on them with no problem, it's just the "open" command that seems to have a problem.

ARES  Great idea, bad release.

WindowShade X was stable since I started Menufela. I've trashed this app after a few hours, no remorse. EJI pointed some bugs, there are many more.

As a beta freeware I can accept it, as a shareware it is a joke. Too many bugs + shareware = 1 star.

To the developer: test your apps before charging for it.

APPOLYON  There is nothing cooler than having the menu bar hidden away and Menufela does it simply and easily. Plus seeing as I no longer use Spotlight its nice to remove that from the bar, even if it's only really cosmetic.

Just a couple of things. First, under this beta some applications can't launch or launch properly while the bar is hidden. A couple of examples are Speed Freak which begins to consume insane amounts of CPU. It runs as normal when the menu bar hiding is off. The widget Net Re-connector also fails to re-connect when the menu is hidden. There may be other instances when hiding affects other applications but for now I've stopped doing that. Second, what exactly is the Kiosk mode? There is no documentation on it at all.

Can't wait for the next update!

EJI  Very nice implementation, and should help to put an end to the menu bar burn-in I'm getting on my iMac G5's LCD. Mac OS X should do this by default.

As a few other posters have mentioned, there are a few bugs with Menufela.

- Doesn't play well with Unsanity's Windowshade "Minimize in place" option. Do so and the window will shrink and disappear somewhere offscreen. The only way to get it back is to quit the app and relaunch.

- The "new mail" envelope is showing on the Entourage icon permanently now. Quitting and relaunching doesn't get rid of it.

- On login, my menu extras hover at the top and don't vanish until the first time I call up the menu bar.

- Apps like iTunes don't like to be maximized to the entire display. Minimize them, then maximize them again and they expand offscreen.

- Like others have said, it would be nice if the menu bar didn't appear every time a user launches a new app. And it would be good if the app's window positioning automatically accounted for the presence/absence of the menu bar.

And that's just what I've encountered in the past two hours.

I really wish this had been issued as a beta for testing before the dev started charging $5 for it. Yeah, it's relatively cheap, but it's got too many glitches to make me feel entirely comfortable with using it.

OMNIPHIPUS  thank you, thank you, thank you. i have spent days since i got my powerbook in 2003 trying to get that screen releastate back. i tryed to run the system in console mode, tryed writing an app to do for me and gave up on it about 6 months ago. finally!

works great. didn't work in finder or mail at first. these applications just need to be restarted and it will work fine.

thanks for giving me my fullscreen back. this is incredible.

BDOG  Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've been hoping someone would write a haxie for this purpose.

If these were fixed, this would be perfect;

1. An option to not do anything to the dock. My dock is already hidden, and so when I click on an icon, it hides, then appears again.

2. Like previously stated, it would be nice if the app didn't see the menubar as it opened, then positions it's initial window(s) under the menubar (instead of top of the display). I understand if you can't do anything about this.

3. Expose "show desktop" doesn't respect that the menubar is hidden, but the Finder's desktop icon positions do. This makes it hard to click on the top row of icons. (I use 16x16 icons with labels below icon) I understand if you can't do anything about this.

FJOLNIR  1. Working on it. I'm almost there but there are still some bugs to be worked out

2. Fixed

3. Yeah, this will be a tough one and I have some more critical bugs to fix before I can work on these minor bugs.

1 and 2 apply to the latest source code not the latest release. They will be released with the next release :)

Quicksilver and Launchbar let you search spotlight by bringing up the window after you've typed the whole search string, unlike the cmd+f finder window.

FJOLNIR  Yes. I tried launchbar and it's spotlight search doesn't work when the spotlight menu item. I'm working on a different method for disabling spotlight (one that doesn't disable the spotlight window as well)

As for quicksilver, it has a "spotlight in finder option" which opens a finder window very similar to the spotlight window. so until I release a version that doesn't disable the spotlight window. I suggest you use that.

CLAKES  i ended up in buying it. the idea itself alone is definitely worth 5$, which is a chinch.

it does have room for improvement though: the bar shouldn't show up when applications start as it modifies top windows' positioning.

an option "show in front/in the background", if technically possible, would be great too.

FJOLNIR  Well, this is due to how the system works.

If the menubar is hidden, so is the dock. But I *am* working on a workaround for this, so hopefully in a future version menufela will ignore the dock.

PHATCACTUS  Nice. I think I'll keep it around. It really needs to not show the menubar when an app starts, though, as it screws with window postions. And the delay before the bar shows is really long.

I know, it's a beta.

Also, why have your own prefpane when APE allows you to put everything there?
