MONKEYJUNKEY ATM Album-Art isn't imported for AAC-Files. This makes it really hard to move on from iTunes. My iTunes library is about 50% AAC und 50% MP3. Hoping on an update... (Version 1.2)

YOSHINATSU Songbird is a really good piece of software, and it REALLY could have the potential of being "the Firefox of audio players". Taking features from iTunes, Winamp and implementing new innovative ones, along with the use of add-ons, Songbird could have that "something" we all have wanted since the beginning of the MP3 era. The Mac OS X port could have been more native though. Songbird needs to implement the philosophy of Firefox 3 to achieve something on Mac OS X. (Version 1.1.2)

JAZZYGUY Thanks! I have 0.7 on my PPC Macs. I tried the 1.0 on them but it gave me problems...lots of spinning Beach Balls. The problem with 0.7 is that it doesn't have all the features of the current version or 1.0 (Version 1.1.1)

I am a little irritated that the PPC version is so far behind, but I guess there isn't much to do about it. (Version 1.1.1)

THEBRIX2008 This is a nice application. Although unwieldy (it is based on Mozilla, and scatters "Mozilla" folders around various places in ~/Library) it is fast to start up and fast in operation, performs large imports without choking (a 9,000-track iTunes library and 100 folders of FLAC files in my case) and, most importantly for me, handles classical music well; the Composer field is treated with equal importance to the others, accented characters keep their accents, and long fields are not truncated. For me Songbird's two big advantages over iTunes are that open formats (FLAC, OGG) are accepted and that rules and filtering are significantly better (Smart Playlists, in particular, completely trounce anything iTunes offers); some of the add-ons, such as a duplicate or dead track finder, a drag-and-drop play queue and a tagger much more powerful than the built-in tagger (which is more or less the same as that offered by iTunes) are very useful. I feel that the developers have done a fine job in copying iTunes where it is good (doing otherwise would have been a bad idea as iTunes has become the popular standard, for better or worse) and improving on it when it is not. The extensions potentially put Songbird far in advance of iTunes, and no doubt more will be released now that it has reached a production version. (Version 1.0)

JAZZYGUY Still no update for PPC users. I have 2Macs that are intel and 4 Macs that are PPC . I have Songbird on all of them as well as their associated exernal back up hard drives. I feel that there are many others like me who would appreciate the updated version on their PPC Macs but apparently the developers of Songbird vchoose to ignore our requests. (Version 1.0)

TLEGG Expect to see the unofficial contributed PPC build for 1.0 sometime in the next week. I'm in the process of rebuilding my toolset and songbird dependency toolchain to downgrade to 10.4. I have posted at my blog the unofficial 1.0RC3 PPC build, but it is 10.5 only. Once I get a working 10.4 PPC build, you'll see it posted as the contributed build at getsongbird.org. (Version 1.0)

STORMCHILD Songbird is a neat idea. I've been following its progress over the last couple of years. It's clearly not ready to be reviewed yet, as it has not even reached the beta-testing stage (this is still very much alpha software), so I would suggest that any ratings given to it on MacUpdate so far should be deleted. That said, from what I've seen, this software has not come very far from where it was two years ago, and doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon. I doubt this will ever mature into a great product, but would be happy to be pleasantly surprised. (Version 0.5)

DJEFIS It has remained installed 5 minutes on my Mac. I am not able to understand this player. He reminds me the players manufactured for Windows, I have not seen anything of the Macintosh style. I hope that anyone will not imitate them. In a different way will be forced to install and unistall continuously. (Version 0.4)

UMIJIN Unlike the previous reviewer, I can see plenty of reasons not to use iTunes including: inability to play many media formats and download ability limited to iTunes store. Songbird is still pre-release and quite buggy. The preview install has some serious issues (like, don't install any of the add-ins when you first run the app, or it won't boot). However, if you can get it to run, it has many features iTunes doesn't. Particularly nice is the ability to find and download music from various websites, including those focused on distribution of new and free content. Indy music lovers, this is the app for you. But the developers really need to polish this thing, as it's not really ready for beta release yet. (Version 0.2.5)

EASER I'd like to give this high marks, but I can't see any reason not to use iTunes. iTunes 7 has several significant advantages, not the least of which include (1) genuine gapless play and (2) useful sound enhancers such as VolumeLogic. If you want an alternative music player, look into SSAudioPlayer. It shows some promise, and the developer has been responsive to requests. (Version 0.2.5)

PALADINO Looks interesting but, so far, I see no reason to use this over iTunes. At 111 MBs, Songbird is 4 times the size of iTunes. Bloatware, I guess. True, iTunes keeps getting more bloated so I'm sticking with version 6.04. Works just fine for me. (Version 0.2.5)

IINDIGO This music player isn't very usable at this point. It's heavy, has an ugly interface, feels flakey, and is lacking features. It may be decent in the future, after more work has been put into it, but for now I'll be sticking with iTunes. (Version 0.2.5)

MARK EVERITT Exceptionally promising! Sure it's a bit heavy at the moment, but it is in development. I work in a completely cross-platform environment, and a cross-platform player suits me down to the ground. I still use iTunes more, but with each release iTunes is getting more bloated and less worth it. With regards to the interface, this is a cross platform player, so of course it's never going to look mac native. I think it's a good thing to take a unique look rather than try to blend in unsuccessfully. Kudos to the developers, and keep up the good work on this amazing project! (Version 0.2.5)

VERYCARLA iTunes 2.0? WTF are you talking about? and "Local v/remote never felt so deprecated"? I can't for the life of me fathom the meaning of your words. I know each one individually, but together they make no sense. iTunes has little to fear from Songbird at this point in time. I wish it did, because iTunes is getting a little too bloated for my liking (though in Apple's favour each new version brings new and useful features, such as 7.1.x's sort tags). (Version 0.2.5)
| Mar 18 2007 |
LEONCAHUN Let me help you out: what I tried to get across--obviously in kind of a hyberbolic (do you know that word, too?) way--is that Songbird literally let the difference disappear between your own local library and a "library" somewhere "out there"--simply because the music "out there" gets, gui-wise, displayed in basically the very same way as your local library. Let alone that you can add (by drag'n'drop) the remote music to your local library much more easily and in much more an intuitive way than in iTunes, where you still have to literally "download" the music or "subscribe" to a podcast. Hold your horses: I know that technically mp3's (or whatever) have to be downloaded to your local machine to "be part" of your "local" computer (like in "to be carried away", "to be burned on a disc", etc)--but, the point is that songbird's gui makes that very difference irrelevant, deprecated. Hence, the whole pragmatics of dealing with music, locally and remotely, gets changed. That's what seems to me the "2.0"-ness of Songbird. (And, yes, it has already dawned over me that iTunes is somewhere in the 7.x-region. But then again, check back with what "2.0" means these days.) (And I'm not arguing that, as of now, iTunes is in a lot of respects more polished. I'm talking about the concept behind iTunes v/ SB.) Now, I'm sure you feel a bit more enlighted. Thanks for standing, and excuse my verbosity. (Version 0.2.5)

TOMIS Well it is highly buggy. The interface needs a lot of work to feel like a native Mac program. It does the basic task of playing MP3s from the hard drive. But everything else is sketchy. I'll keep an eye on this and hope it improves by leaps and bounds by the time it reaches 1.0 (Version 0.2)
