KOBALT Having the same problem - I am having to restart the app numerous times a day. Not really working for me this way. I have sent Logan, the dev, an email a week ago, but he must be otherwise engaged (not that there's anything wrong with that!) because I've had no reply to date. We'll just have to wait patiently and meanwhile manually check to see if there is new mail. :) (Version 3.2.3)

SBCHAVEL The "see subject line" option is really really useful and appreciated (if it doesn't slow down Mail). If you have many emails it might be helpful moving MUM commands to the top of the menu. An alternative option to have subject lines pop-up when cursor hovers over a particular mailbox name - RSS style - would be great. Thank you for a great product. (Version 3.2.3)

MURUA I love this program and it worked great in Leopard. I like to have my dock hidden and it is good to be able to see the mail count in the task bar. However, now in Snow Leopard it only opens whenever it wants. One way to get it to work is to open it before you open mail, otherwise it is just a roll of the dice. And mine is set to launch and quit when Mail launches and quits. Great in Leopard, not so great in Snow Leopard... (Version 3.2.2)

SBCHAVEL I have worked around MUM's "launch when Mail launches" setting. Using the great keyboard shortcut app iKey, I set up a shortcut so that when Mail launches, 3 seconds later MUM launches. This time delay has ended MUM's automatic quits. For those of you who use other shortcut apps (e.g. Spark), you may want to experiment with them. When MUM works, it has better features than all the other unread-mail-tracking apps. (Version 3.1.1)

SENC01A This is definitely the WORST program I've ever tried for mac. Not only messes up your Mail.app , but for example your computer will not be able to sign out, restart or shut down while the program is running because when shut down tries to kill Mail.app the notifier relaunches it and you get the famous message: Mail notifier app did not let you shut down the computer, please try again. This app is HORRIBLE, do not download it or install it. That is my recommendation. (Version 3.1.1)

DAN FRIML I tried this a few times in the past. I was always missing something or it didn't work as I expected... Today I wanted to try the new version. I do like the idea, the new look and features.. but... After installation and subsequent Mail app restart it doesn't work here. I can start MUM only if Mail app is not running, it doesn't start when Mail is on... When I start MUM first and then Mail app, it's in the menu bar, but it doesn't count anything. The whole app freezes and also Mail becomes slow, sometimes totally unresponsive, only force quit can solve this... Tested on MBP Core Duo, 10.5.2... Waiting for an update, I hope next time it will work better. (Version 3.0)

ANONYMOUS I have no idea why the mail app doesn't have this built-in, I don't think I would be able to live without this. I've been a long time user of this and it's only getting better. New ability to add your own icons, launch when Mail app launches without having to add a login item, and Unseen Mail. My only complaint is the stability, on 10.4.11 it sometimes hangs. NEUTRALZONE "Why add one more thing to the menu bar when it's already down there in the dock?" Because I prefer to keep my Dock hidden, I can't see the badge. LOGANROCKMORE The icon in the Dock only shows new messages in your Inbox folder, whereas Mail Unread Menu shows new messages in all of your folders. Also, many folks like to have their docks hidden, but the menu bar is always shown. developer, Mail Unread Menu (Version 2.4)
| Aug 16 2007 |
NEUTRALZONE The developer is right. The Dock is hidden on all my Macs, because I launch and switch apps faster using the keyboard. I use the menu bar for ALL status information: unread mail, network throughput and CPU load (thanks to MenuMeters), Airport, battery life, time, etc. I do not want to un-hide the Dock just to see one or two pieces of data. Mail Unread Menu helps keep all my status info in one place, the menu bar. (Version 2.5.1)

ZEPHYRIS I don't see a choice for icons.. I see the regular icon and one just black patch in the shape of the icon (which is the choice perhaps?). That of course is pointless. So I am curious where these icons are? (Version 2.3)

LOGANROCKMORE The choice is between the regular icon and the black one. This specific icon was a feature that was requested by a user, and thus not too pointless of an option. If you have suggestions for other icons that you would like to see, I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks. developer, Mail Unread Menu wemaster@burgundylogan.com (Version 2.3)

SIMICHAVEL Further testing has whittled down the problem as follows: when Mail.app has no new messages to report, Mail Unread Menu gives me "1." Otherwise, MUM is accurate and, as intended, simultaneous. (Version 2.1)
| [ Reply ] | |
| Feb 12 2007 |
SIMICHAVEL Current version doesn't update number of unread mails instantly with changes in Mail.app. Even dropping down menu and selecting the marked mail does not force MUM to update its count. Previous was more reliable about this. Also, this and previous version occasionally force Mail.app instantly to reopen after you've closed it. 2 GHz Intel Core Duo/OS 10.4.8 (Version 2.1)

CHRIS DISREGARD Pretty good, except it would be nice to have some configuration options. Mainly to be able to tell it to ignore certain folders. I've got a custom created spam folder and I don't really need to know that it has 338 unread messages in it. (Version 2.0.3)

CHRIS DISREGARD EDIT: It seems there is a limited preferences menu, but it only seems to work when Mail is closed. However, it would still be nice to pick specific folders instead of simply Inbox or All. (Version 2.0.3)
| Feb 9 2007 |
PETER DA SILVA The actual checking is handled by Applescripts in the Resources folder of the application. The code seems to be relatively simple, and it wouldn't be hard to make it select only the mailboxes you want. Modifying the preferences to give you a nice UI for this would require the source to the rest of the app. (Version 2.1)

LOGANROCKMORE It looks like some people are having problems with downloading .dmg files, and it could be because browsers other than Safari have trouble with them. LAINSNAVI Great little app. I'd been using MSC (Mail Status Control), but that's still PPC. The only thing I used it for letting me know if I had new email in other mailboxes other than the inbox (which this app does wonderfully). One thing I'd like to see is maybe have different options for the menubar icon. For example, have just the number of emails that are new and have it change color if there are any (I'd prefer red). Heck, even a user-defined color would work. Regardless, This works perfectly for me. Great job! Exactly what I need for my new Intel Mac Mini ^^ (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS This is the same product as MailUnreadStatusBar, except it doesn't have any of the features that MailUnreadStatusBar has. Unfortunately the programmer for MUSB doesn't make many updates to his products and it's not Universal. If you want to improve on your product you should check out the features, implemented and improve upon them. Like there is no option to turn off launching Mail if you launch MailUnreadStatusBar. Also the preferences are not that clear. Check out the features and make a better product. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14654 (Version 1.0)

LOGANROCKMORE I know of the program you mentioned and I realize that Mail Unread Menu has fewer features, but that how I wanted it designed. I wanted as small a program as possible without all of the features I never used. Basically, a one trick pony. And, since this program is Universal, there's an advantage that some people might find useful. I realize there are other alternatives to this program, but I had made a similar program for the RSS reader NetNewsWire and being that it was simple to manufacture the same utility for Mail.app, I decided to put it together and distribute it. I understand that it's not the perfect program for everyone, and if this is the case for you, I would encourage you to look elsewhere. Thank you. (Version 1.0)
