SATCOMER Fstream now works in Snow Leopard (10.6.2) . However the Presets in the program really no longer work when selecting the iTunes Presets. Since one can go to the radio's web site and get the feed directly and putt the feeds into the Favorites works without a hitch. The program is small and uses the internal QuickTime plugins so getting any radio stream is just a QuickTime plugin away. Plus the program uses very little memory/processor and get every radio station on the net (if you know HOW to get the stream url). (Version 1.4.4)

MARIVAUX Y'know, people, you can download this from the developer's site with no problems... It's a super-good program for listening to radio streams. All of the necessary features, non of the uneccesary ones, and very good at connecting to multiple streams. If it could parse realaudio it would be perfect, but overall it's much better for radio than, say, VLC, which has an impossibly clunky media library and tends to crash. (Version 1.4.2)

SCHOSCHIE I'm wondering why I hadn't heard of this app earlier. It's a godsend! I've been listening almost exclusively to net radio stations for the last three years while doing work, and it bugged me to have to launch the big iTunes behemoth just to tune in to the radio. Now I don't have to anymore, as FStream does just this, and it's much more lightweight and easy on the system, and it starts up in no time, and automatically re-connects to the station you were last listening to. Also, it has a nice streams manager where you can organize all your stations. FStream can also record the radio stream. I had previously bought RadioLover for this purpose (the non-free successor to the no longer updated StreamRipper X), but I didn't mind that FStream would obviate an extra app for that purpose, too. However, I was a little disappointed to realize that FStream apparently re-encodes the audio before saving it to disk, in contrast to what RadioLover/StreamRipper X does, which is basically just write the stream packets into a file and put an appropriate container around it. I wouldn't mind about the re-encoding (although I'm questioning the necessity), but it's rather heavy on the system. On my (admittedly old) machine, FStream uses up nearly the entire CPU while recording, which makes it impractical to record a radio stream while doing work. This, for me, is FStream's one major weak point (and this is why I'm giving only 4 out of 5 stars for "Features"). I've suggested to the author the possibility of recording the radio stream directly (without re-encoding), but he seems to be rather reluctant to consider it. I can't really complain though because FStream is of course free, and it's the best choice for listening to radio streams, afaik. (Version 1.4.1)

CHAOTICPIXEL Okay, I have been using this for a couple of hours, and I must say, "WOW!" This is a really simple, yet highly functional, high quality app. The usability is great, stability is great, functionality is great (especially for a free app) and easy to use (although it would help to make it more clear that .pls is the only url it can handle). And, addition to all of the above, the recording function is fantastic. The quality of the recording was phenomenal, and it was very easy to use. The only con is the .pls only file handling. If the developer can get more file types accepted, I would give this 5 1/2 stars.

APPLE_JULIEN Thank you for this review :) For the PLS, FStream don't handle juste this playlist format (it's not a stream or audio format). He recognize also M3U and ASX files. But you don't need a playlist to play a webradio. You can give to FStream directly the stream URL (often terminated by just a /). Can you give me the URLs that are not PLS and that don't work ? Thank you ! (Version 1.4)

CHAOTICPIXEL This may be a really stupid hint, but it did take me a while to figure it out. This app only, from my observation, can play .pls streams. Once I realized this, I searched for stations that I could find .pls urls and bam, it worked great. Nice app so far. After some use I will write a full fledged comment.

APPLE_JULIEN "I was just dbl clicking on the preset stations which actually would make then start playing." Wow ! Yes, this feature (the double-click) is juste to "preview" the preset or the iTunes importation. There is always hidden crash issue. But with the switching to a new audio engine, there is a big amount of fixing to do ! But I try to release as soon as possible when a big amount of bugs are corrected. (Version 1.2.6)

(Version 1.2.5)

JCRAIG The station uses SAM Broadcaster from Spacial Audio. It seems like when the track changes, FStream tends to get hung up at times, like it will remain in a state of buffering. I've been playing around with the preferences to see if certain settings work better than the others. This station also does live shows, and the stream seems to hang when the DJ goes to talk as well. If I go into the streams menu (top-right button) and click on the stream in the list, it starts playing again. Performance seems to deteriorate after time. This is on a MBP 2.0GHz with 2GB of RAM. I've got a PPC eMac here, I'll see if there's any difference on that machine. One thing I did notice in a crash report was reference to Application Enhancer. I've since added FStream to the Exclude list in APE. (Version 1.2.5)

JEDIK BTW, the Quick Open feature does not accept pasting text with COMMAND+V. Using the contextual menu (CONTROL+click) is fine. (Version 1.2.5)

APPLE_JULIEN Again, that work fine on my computer... :( But I will try to see what sometime this issue become alive ;) jcraig : okay, after about 5 minutes, I had the connection drop down issue. When the buffer is large, the drop down is slower. And like you said, thr drop down happen when a new title/artist is send by the server (track change). But I tried with the old audio engine of FStream and VLC, the same thing happen (in VLC, however, there is not realy a white -like FStream if you turn on the auto-reloading when the buffer drop down- because he upsampling for a little while the stream to get again the right amount of audio data). I had trace all the Ogg code, he doen't give me one error. So a conclusion : the server doesn't send enough data amount when he send track informations (normally, the server send a little bit more data -equal to the track len- when a new track is sended, to precisly, no drop down the stream) Do you have other streams with the same issue ? Is the first time that I see this kind of server... That I will try : doing the same thing of VLC : upsampling the stream when the amount of data is to low (but it's puttering about ...) JCRAIG If I listen to that same stream using Whamb (www.whamb.com) I don't get that drop. No output to Console suring the drops either. The ogg stream at http://www.thedividingline.com/listen-high.pls seems to behave a little better, but I've still had the drops after a period of time. That one uses a different broadcasting software. I'm not sure what they use on their server, however their live DJs use Winamp with a plugin for broadcasting. BTW, the AAC+ stream I listen to works very nicely ;-) (Version 1.2.5)

JCRAIG Getting better. I like the new engine. Still some stability issues with ogg-based Icecast stream, like this one: http://boa.mediacast1.com:9288/prog1.ogg (Version 1.2.5)

APPLE_JULIEN Alas, the audio engine is based on FMod who don't recognize AAC/AAC+/WMA (normal for the last one : its a private format). For the AAC, maybe in a futur version with a new version of FMod. Fortunately mostly wabradio broadcast in mp3 or ogg ;) (Version 1.2.2)

JCRAIG After using for a while, I'm noticing CPU usage going through the roof as the buffer percentage drops, currently at 102.6% CPU with a 35% buffer, this on a MBP 2.0GHz with 2GB of RAM. (Version 1.2.2)
| Aug 21 2006 |
APPLE_JULIEN Yes I know this issue. The fault is for FMod : when the buffer is under 99%, he take 100% of the processor. For the moment, the only thing to do, is to switch in pause mode to wait that the buffer go to 99% and switch to play. (Version 1.2.2)

JEDIK Interesting... Can't use Flip4Mac, a free QuickTime plugin, to load MMS/WMA streams? Thanks again for this nice app. =) (Version 1.2.2)

APPLE_JULIEN No, I don't use QuickTime for the stream decoding. (Version 1.2.2)

JCRAIG Finally! A replacement for Whamb for those ogg-based streams. Seems to work very well. Now for AAC+ ;-) (Version 1.2.2)
