VERT I've tried AppZapper and AppCleaner, they are booth nice, but noone find really all the files like CleanApp does... For a example the folders in Application Support are often missed by AppZapper or AppCleaner. Currently using the demo, but its really amazing how this background logging process works, hardly uses any ressources. I'll write a review in a few days with more testing but so far its the best deinstaller i found. (Version 3.2b6)

GBBOB This is a great app but, it needs one thing when you initially trash an application. It should present a dialog box asking if you are trashing just the app or the entire pkg. Sometimes when I download a new version of an application, it may be corrupted bad or I just do not like the update and decide to stick with the last version. As soon as you trash the app, CA kicks in and begins to scan for the tie-in files. Again, that is great if you are deleting the whole pkg and not just the app. That is where a simple dialog box could come up first asking your intentions whether you are deleting the app or everything. This way if it is just the app. trashed CA does not have to load and you do not have to wait to tell it to quit. This then saves us time and makes CA more proficient. End of Line... L-I-N-K Any other uninstaller app without the logging deamon does a pretty basic job. Usually many files will stay on your disc. CleanApp does a real complete job - you can even see which general files (e.g. apple plist file) have been modified by your app. I really agreee to the others: since the last updates all major bugs or feature requests have been corrected. JOLLY_JOKER I tried all the Apps of this kind (AppCleaner, AppDelete, AppTrap, Amnesia, the "old" AppZapper, ecc) and I think CleanApp is "the best app of his genre"! but there are 2 things to improve: 1) when cleanapp scans an application, it reveals all the files that the app used, but, often, some of these files are preferences that Mac Os needs (like "addressbook.plist", ecc); so I always have to deselect some files. I think that in future the developer could improve the "protected system files" that should not appear when you scan to delete an app. 2)I think the developer should separate the "Preference Panes" menù in different submenù like "screensaver", "widget", "plug-in" and "preferences panes (only the .prefpane files)", so it will be more orderly. 5 stars (with the hope of these improvements...) | Jun 15 2009 |
EGN The problem with what you report is that if you don't realize CleanApp screwed up "selecting" what it should it will delete tons of files necessary for the OS to work properly! These apps should be drag-and-drop-zap safe. Not everyone is going to use a magnifying glass to check on what it is about to delete. Others like Amnesia don't do this. In short, this app can really be dangerous to your systems health. (Version 3.1.2)
| Jul 5 2009 |
JOLLY_JOKER EGN your're right, but CleanApp find about ALL files related to an App (also the temporary files); this is the why I think it's better than the other Apps of this genre that are just a "finder that search also system files". We could say that till that "protected files" problem will not be fixed, you must pay attention and deselect files that haven't the same name of the App you're going to delete.. (Version 3.1.3)
| Jul 5 2009 |
EGN Well, I just did not trust this anymore, deleted it and requested a refund. Will not use it. I have found that a combination of Amnesia + Hazel will do much better with much less danger of deleting what should not be deleted. CleanApp requires too much overhead because you have to start really looking into what it "thinks" it should delete. Sometimes this is dozens of files. I don't have the time to be checking one by one and a lot of times one does not really know if a particular file or files should be removed or not. If this app does what the developers say it does. that it monitors from the moment you start installing an app, all the files that it installs it should be very easy to remove only what it installed. This does not seem to be the case. So, this app will not make it back into my group of utilities for a very long time, if it ever does. (Version 3.1.3)

THEBRIX2008 I take back - in part - two previous comments on beta versions; the CPU problems have been solved, and I have been running version 3 final for three weeks with no problems. There have also been some welcome improvements in the user interface; for example, the (useless) Old Files option - and any other option - may be switched off, and a couple of user interface features that slowed down operation (animations, and calculating package sizes) may also be switched off. However, I have come across two bugs and one issue. The bugs are that empty entries for application logs cannot be deleted, and that Growl tickets are not found. The issue, which has always been there and which, I suspect, is an artefact of the CleanApp design, is that in general too many files are marked for delete. Two Address Book lock files are almost always marked but, more seriously, all downloaded files from a Web browser are marked, with an obvious risk. There is a workaround - exclude ~/Downloads from the discovery and deletion - but the workaround is not obvious. Perhaps the Preferences option should be auto-populated with ~/Downloads and ~/Desktop? Overall, the author appears to have cracked the problems which led me to stop using CleanApp for some time, and has made it much more pleasant to use as well. (Version 3.0.2)

JEEPEE AppCleaner and AppZapper work completely different. They look more like Spotlight and will not find hidden files and files with different names. When using CleanApp a little longer, and using apps, while the CleanApp Daemon works in the background, you will see that CleanApp will find more files. AppCleaner is nice and works easier than Spotlight, but cannot be compared with CleanApp when it comes to files with names other than the apps name. AppZapper is a shame. It should have been updated for years now, but it looks like the developer went on a long long vacation, with quite some money, because it looks very nice. It's easy to garantee upgrades for life, if you never update/upgrade the program anyway. So please don't say anything about AppZapper anymore. (Version 3.0.1)

BRUSETH Time after time, version after version I had hoped that they would fix the problems with the CleanApp Daemon - but it hasnt happened. Thats whats finally prompted me to write this somewhat negative review. Sorry. If you hear a lot of disk activity, your machine slows down, it takes longer for programs to launch, just go to Activity Monitor and you will see that the CleanApp Daemon is way up there, taxing the heck out of your machine. It (the CleanApp Daemon) either finally needs to be fixed, or taken out of the program If it cant be fixed. If it is taken out of the program, then this program will really be just the same as the rest of the similar programs out there, including the free ones. I waited and waited to write this review. I didnt want to write a bad review, and really hoped they would fix the problem. But seeing that its still not fixed, I figured that it is only fair to alert other, potential users of the problem with this app. (Version 3.0)

DOOBIEXX All I can do is hope, it's going to take a while for me to go back to cleanapp, which was an excellent program when I bought it, but the CPU hogging has been ridiculous. the daemon has to be ran with less memory being used especially virtual ,,,, this is running on a notebook with 2.6ghz core2 duo and 4 gb of ram. Also, it has been throwing in unattached essential preference file to most if not all the applications for uninstalling. This is a bit quicker but still not as fast as it used too/needs to be. MR.ASH Will CleanApp 3 ever leave the beta state? Also the logging deamon often still uses 90% CPU for hours. Despite of these annoying facts CleanApp is the only Mac uninstaller witch can delet 100% of all files witch are written by a program/installer (thanks to the logging service). All other uninstallers just search for similar file names of the application. So there's a great risk that not all files will be deleted or a importend system file could be deleted. But to be honest, even so the other uninstallers work very well. (Version 3.0b10)

if you don't need certain features, you can selectively deactivate those 'Functions' using CleanApp's preferences. This can significantly speed up certain tasks. Also, I'd be very happy if you told me in more detail, what you regard as buggy about the software. We still state it as 'Beta' for exactly the reasons that certain parts of CleanApp are currently still being optimized and enhanced. Obviously this includes eliminating errors and bugs which surface during the development of such a complex application. I am sorry that you feel like this about CleanApp. Even more so as during recent updates it has improved a lot. I look forward to your feedback. Thanks in advance! (Version 3.0b10)

IERIKA they have fixed the crashing the errors. And cleanapp logging is running smoothly unnoticeable in the background. But all in all it's great. No files can escape from the logging feature, even a file that is not associated with it can't escape, lol. That's why I immediately purchased a license will it's $10. THEBRIX Agreed - I notice the problem with files not associated with the application being flagged for deletion. Here, after a lot of use of CleanApp, the same files - and lots of them - were being listed with _every_ deletion. These were not trivial files ... some of them were .plists which would, at the very least, have lost core settings of OS X if they were deleted ... ! Also, the "100% CPU" issue re-asserted itself. A pity, as I have to take back my previous review, but it is worrying that such issues only appeared after a couple of months of solid use. (Version 3.0b7)

EVOLEAK i've been a (registered) user of cleanapp for about 2 years. version 2 was a pro/cons-app: pro: did find many files. cons: installations protocolling deamon used cpu heavyly, sometimes crashed, very annoying minor updates every 2 weeks. today i was very pleased to read about the free upgrade to version 3 and comments of users that the deamon would function. i tried... ... what a TERRIBLE experience: system hang up because the deamon sucked every physical and virtual memory he could get and increased his cpu-usage to 100%. ... HORRIBLE: i couldn't simply quit the deamon (activity monitor) nor did the suggestion from syniums homepage work: once quitted the deamon woke up again to eat my system! i'm very sorry to write negative comments but the problem seems not to be solved in the next time (take a look to the support-site of synium where over 1000 people were looking for help with this problem). THEBRIX I can now recommend this application - the 100% CPU issue was fixed in beta 6 (and continues to be fixed in beta 7). CleanApp works superbly, (almost) fully removing even applications which spread files and folders all over the place - Opera 9.5 beta and Firefox 3 are good examples. The (almost) is because redundant Growl tickets are not removed; that is the only minor omission I have found. My other caveat is that you have to be careful when removing browsers - for some reason files downloaded by the browser (not part of it) are marked for removal. This nearly led to a couple of PDF files being lost when I uninstalled Opera ... (Version 3.0b7)

GEORGE26 I tried this new version and it exhibits the same traits of the old ones in terms of memory and CPU time. The worst part is the daemon that consistently takes up 100% of one of my four cores of processors and sometimes much of the others on a MacPro, even when my computer is not in use. Until this is fixed I cannot afford to devote that much CPU time to something that is supposed to be just tracking software installs. (Version 3.0b1)

ANDREW SCOTT I've been finding exactly the same problem with the current beta version. It's very annoying to hear the fans of my MacBook Pro go into overdrive and find out the CleanApp daemon is grabbing 98% of the CPU for no good reason. (Version 3.0b1)
| Feb 6 2008 |
JEEPEE If you open CleanApp, you will see what's being logged at that moment. The developer told me that the CleanApp Daemon waits until there's enough CPU left for it to write things on disk. It also waits until an application or installer is ready with writing things to disk and when it's ready, the Daemon starts writing its log. It seems that CleanApp will have to ignore some processes in the future, just to be sure it doesn't log unnecessary things. If you have suggestions or questions, do write to the developer, so he can make CleanApp better. (Version 3.0b1)
| Feb 13 2008 |
GEORGE26 I went further with the CPU hog issue by monitoring CleanApp in the Apple Activity Monitor deeper to see its behavior over time. When I first noticed it hogging the CPU (at the time was 100% of one core) it remained at that level for more than 30 minutes when I finally just quit the daemon. While the explanation that it is waiting for idle time to do its work may be a noble thought, taking this much time to simply log events is far, far too consuming of CPU time is out of proportion with the task, unless is it writing a novel. Something is still wrong and the developer needs to fix/improve that aspect of the program. (Version 3.0b2)

MOK I really like the concept of this app and even thought about buying it, but I can't understand why the daemon is routinely taking 2GBs of space (2GBs!!! whaaaa!?) and CleanApp itself uses 10% of a Core 2 Duo processor even at rest! This aspect definitely needs improvement. (Version 2.4.2)

MUDFLAPPER I really like this app. The UI is attractive. The search field is handy. The daemon does use too much memory, but you're not required to run it. In fact, I hardly ever use it. CleanApp works well without it. (Version 2.4)

MACU Alright! Today was the day. I UN-installed CleanApp from my system. Lucky me. No more beachballs because of the hanging CleanApp daemon. Doh... Generelly speaking i think the idea of this app is good. But it definetely lacks a bit more of the daemon development. This buddy slowed my system speed out from time to time (every 2 days or so), but on a regularly basis. (Version 2.4)

MUDFLAPPER You know you can just turn off the daemon. I have the daemon installed but keep it turned off until I'm installing some messy app. (Version 2.4)
| Nov 5 2007 |
HENRIKTEKNIK Mudflapper: But if you turn off the daemon, will it then effectively register all kinds of changes to the filesystem that an app makes, so that it can uninstall all those files? I thought that was the whole point of having a daemon. I may be wrong though. (Version 2.4.2)
| Nov 6 2007 |
MUDFLAPPER No, you're right. But it doesn't bother me too much. It gets the same amount of files as AppZapper when the daemon is off, and that's good enough for me. (Version 2.4.2)
| Aug 3 2007 |
OPETER I also brought this little application and for me it works perfectly, without any glittches. Maybe this is because i have 4 GB of RAM, but the CleanApp Daemon doesnt do anything, that would slow down my computer. It is a great application for uninstalling any other application, especially these, that doesnt have any uninstallers. Also you can clean up in the UB apps the Intel or PPC code. (Version 2.4)

LLSCOTTS In response to the earlier writer who claimed CleanApp crashes a lot... CleanApp has never crashed on me... it's a great application. Not perfect, but well worth the money and more useful than any other app in its class. That reviewer probably had something wrong with his system, or perhaps he didn't notice that CleanApp requires Mac OS X 10.4 ("Tiger") or newer. Honestly... this is the kind of comment that makes me question the value of ratings developed by anyone who raises their hand. If the pool is large enough, the silly votes get weeded out. But when an app is rated by only 5 people and one of them doesn't know what they're doing, it's a problem. ANDREW SCOTT I recently registered my copy and I'm very happy with it. I like the journalling featureit certainly seems to get all the pieces. However there are a few rough edges here and there that need work: - it's very easy to accidentally delete your main Keychain if an application has a Keychain entry. I did this the first time I used CleanApp, thinking I was deleting the Keychain password entry just for that application. Luckily didn't empty the Trash before I discovered the consequences. I think Keychains should be protected from this somehow, or at least the user should be warned of the consequences. I realise I don't know much about Keychains and that CleanApp is very powerful
so I need protecting from myself! (The log window provides a way of restoring deleted files but that is really a last ditch response.) - It's not very easy to find the developer's email address. I found it in the ReadMe/Help file and in the About CleanApp window but neither of these addresses are hot-linked for ease of use. Many shareware applications place a "contact the developer" link under the Help menu. Perhaps this is worth considering. Also the CleanApp web page lacks any contact information at all. Not good practice. - The Applications window, which can produce a very long list of applications, doesn't respond to the keyboard letters. In the Finder typing some keys will jump to the first file starting with those letters. This seems like an obvious feature to replicate in most CleanApp list views. - The CleanApp Log window, which is useful, doesn't allow the date field to be resized even though the date and time information doesn't fit in the column. - The Cache Files window: the Mac icon at the bottom left, which "reveals in Finder", shows the tooltip "Unmark" just like the Unmark icon next to it. - The "Unmark" button should be labelled "Unmark all" - On a cosmetic note I think using a square root symbol ? for the "Select All" icon instead of a proper tick mark ? is somewhat sloppy and not up to Mac application standards. The same might be said of the "X" when a proper symbol ? is available. I know these are small, finicky details but I think addressing them would improve the polish of the application. Other than that, well done. It's great software. (Version 2.2.2)

CAPTVIJAY very Good App. But it needs to populate application list faster or in batches. When I launch program I am interested in unistalling specifc product; I should be able to directly type in in the search field and let it search only that app instead of populating whole app list and then letting me type search which unnecessarily consumes my time. JEEPEE AppDelete and many other uninstallers will not find all the files belonging to a program. They seem to search by names, instead of looking for files secret or hidden files. CleanApp can find all files (only if programs are installed for the first time after CleanApp is installed and your Mac is restarted). UnInstaller and Yank also have another approach and can find more files than AppDelete, AppZapper and others. I like CleanApp, it's simpler than UnInstaller and Yank and I know everything is gone after it has finished it's job. :-) (Version 2.0.1)

JEEPEE I didn't know Easy Find, but it seems that AppDelete and others can not find invisible files and/or files with completely different names. An example is the little game 'Burst'. ZETSURIN I don't understand the mentality of people who come into someone's MU page purely to suggest an alternative application. I think it's a retarded thing to do, and often is done by people who wouldn't have a clue how to write an application themselves and thus have no appreciation for what's involved. It's a slap in the face to the develpers who spend many hours writing software like this! (Version 1.5)
| Oct 19 2006 |
To a point, I agree with you. It is a slap in the developers face to point potential customers in another direction, ie. to a competitors product. However, I myself often look through the reviews to see if there are any displeased users, and if, then what are they recommending instead. It's harsh, but fair. If there's a fire in a free market - the users will alert others of the smoke. This app has less of a following than AppZapper, and so could/should aptly be priced around 6-7 $ in order to entice a purchase and compete with AppZapper. (Version 1.6.1)
