LUCKY8 I guess I won't be using this, even though I thought I liked it, and I have a licence. I had a hard time getting it to work however, and after I spent hours figuring it out wrote to the developer to tell him about it (with details). Just got an answer: "Glad you got it working." Just so you know how this guy treats his customers. (Version 1.5)

MRCHEAPS I used Exces 1.5 a few times, then found that the program wouldn't run anymore - and the two "vault" files that I'd created wouldn't open. 15 gigs of data - out of reach! I contacted the author for help, but didn't hear back...but I found a way to open my files that I thought I'd post in case anyone else has the same problem. Take your "vault" file and rename it to remove the ".exc" extension (your Mac will ask REALLY? and you'll say "yes"). The file magically turns into a folder, inside of which will be several files including a sparseimage. Doubleclick on that, and you'll get a MacOS message asking for the password (the same one you used with Exces). Once you've entered it, a new window will open with your now-accessible files inside. BOGHOPPER The developer has failed to provide me with the serial number as part of the past MacHeist. I've emailed them and been met with silence. I included the receipt as proof of my purchasing the MacHeist Bundle but no go. If this is an indication of their response to emails, then I'm glad I am not having trouble with the software. Black mark in my book. What did you say the other software was named that did about the same thing?

MR.ASH Another useless app. The in OSX integrated DiskUtility tool does the same job out of the box for free and even more. If you don't wanna waste your money but still use another tool than DiskUtility, there are DropDMG and DMG Converter witch are way better than this junk. (Version 1.5)

LUX112 Exellent App. I tested the beta and since I use it to hide some important files from curious persons. (Version 1.2)

FONIX I have used this since I got it with the MacHeist/MacUpdate bundle, and while what other reviewers have said (about this being a wrapper for sparseimages) is true, there are two bits of functionality which, to my knowledge, cannot be done with DiskUtility, or not in one step: resizing the sparseimage to be larger or smaller. Exces now can do that, and there is no longer a 10 GB limit on the vault size. Another minor benefit to using Exces is one of obfuscation. I keep my vaults on an external hard drive, and if that hard drive was stolen and someone tried to double-click the vault, it would say that it could not open the file. A minor thing, yes, but it would repel the average thief, and the AES-128 encryption should keep the more savvy hackers away (the ones who might try to use Disk Utility to open the .exc file). Also, a previous release was supposed to fix a minor curosr focus problem, but when I launched the app it wasn't fixed. I emailed the developer and within minutes he had responded and fixed the problem. This also has potential to incorporate even more features that are not currently in Disk Utility. I look forward to seeing what the developer comes up with. (Version 1.2)

BORLOX I don't know what this guy is up to, but there is absolutely no reason for anybody to use this app or pay for it. It's just a disguised, defective wrapper for the DiskImages framework. The mysterious super-secret vaults it creates are merely obfuscated sparseimages, the same kind you can create for free using Disk Utility, or with cheaper, better third-party apps such as DropDMG. The only differences I can see are, first, that this app somehow manages to impose a spurious 10-GB limitation on the size of the image, and second, that the files can't be shared with anyone who doesn't also have this app installed. Well, actually they can, if the recipient goes to the trouble of extracting the sparseimage file from the bundle it's hidden in, but what's the point? (Version 1.1.4)

IGAUCHO Wow, I really have not seen a positive review here. It makes me quite hesitant to try this out. I just got a copy from the Macheist/MU bundle and was thinking of seeing how it works. I guess I might just stick with Disk Utility for this type of thing. At least I can be assured that I am not locked into a proprietary format if these guys go out of business tomorrow. IGAUCHO Well, I finally got my license for Exces although I had to go to a special link for Macheist buyers to finally get it. So, I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised that Exces works just as advertised after all the negative reviews. I created a vault for a few files and locked it and opened it again without a hitch. It's very easy to use. Just create a new vault and it opens on your desktop ready for you to through your files in. I must be honest though. I would not rely on this application for sensitive data. As I feared, it does use it's own proprietary file format. Forget sending documents to people unless they also have a copy of it. I must emphasize my earlier concern, what happens if these guys go out of business? This is not a very well known application (yet)nor is it widely used. What happens to your sensitive files should something break and these guys are no longer around? Do yourself a favor and stick to Disk Utility. I think we can count on support from Apple for years to come for encrypted disk images. (Version 1.1.3)

HOWIEC Does the same thing as DiskUtility, except it adds a useless animation. All this program does is create sparse disk images using Apple's built-in encryption. It even crashed the first time I tried to use it! (Version 1.1.3)

HAL0THANE I've had some stability issues and 1.1.3 keeps telling me to upgrade -- to 1.1.3. Er? Additionally, I've been nothing but happy with Knox (Knox4Mac), and they don't have the 10Gb issue that Exces does. Yes, what others are writing is correct: It's nothing more than a front-end to hdiutil, but remember that many Mac users are Terminal-shy. I wouldn't use Exces if it hadn't been bundled with the the, erm, Bundle. Knox still gets my vote for ease, convenience, and whole-disk encryption on top of that. (Version 1.1.3)

THE_WATCHER This is just a rip-off. The application is a frontend for the built in disk image support. Nothing special. This kind of rip-off is acceptable for a freebie, but not for a shareware application. Try again Mr. Producer! (Version 1.1.1)

MACLEMON Why do a "replica" of the password assistant when you can have the original? This app could easily sniff the passwords to your encrypted images. Besides the beautiful artwork used I can find nothing that cannot be done as easily with DiskUtility. (Version 1.1)

CASTLE Looks like a great little app and I was looking forward to using it. However, there's no way I'm registering my details for what claims to be a freeware app. Especially since the registration requires connecting to the developers servers. Not good at all, imho. Deleted without even being tested, which is a shame. (Version 1.0.5)

ADIOS Install disk image creates a copy of your apps though it doesn't account for them in the get info. Any attempt to use the "Demo" mode crashes the program. Any attempt to regester eventually opens a "Safari can't open this page". I really don't think that I want to entrust my files to an encryption app that has this many problems before you even get it opened. I can foresee a "Can't open this disk image" looming on the horizon. (Version 1.0.5)
