RUDEBOY  Call this an update: I was kind of hard on this before. But I really do love this.

I'm still using Star without any real problem, as long as I don't play around looking for links to the original developer I won't be reminded that no updates are available. But they're not necessary anyway.

Works with iTunes 9.

STERESI  I think this application is no longer actively maintained. I've had problems with it showing high CPU usage in Activity Monitor, and also quitting itself after a while sometimes. It was still very useful, though.

For fans of this program (or the similarly defunct "iTunesRating"), it looks like we finally have a candidate for a replacement! Try "I Love Stars" by Potion Factory:

Note: it requires at least Mac OS X 10.5.

DREWLING390  Great, simple way to rate your music. The automatic notification for when a song is unrated seems like it would be handy, but it's not working properly with me. When the notification comes up and error also comes up saying "Applescript Error: No user interaction allowed (-1713)". Also, if the user could manually adjust the time until the notification shows up (rather than just having to choose 10 seconds), that would be useful. It usually takes me at least 30 seconds until I know what to rate a song. After solving that error and adding my suggestion, I can't think of any other way it could be improved. Thanks!

RUDEBOY  Always liked this little menubar thingie for rating your iTunes library. I really love not having to bring iTunes to the front to rate the current song.

But why is the link in the "About Star" window now taking me to a gawdawful parked domain called Improvpastence.com? Quite ugly, perhaps even evil.

Oh, and turn off the "Check For Updates" preference or you'll be prompted for downloads that never happen.

Not sure about the stability issue. I get some ugly crashes when running iTunes sometimes. But that could be iTunes, couldn't it.

KOODOUGH  I love Star. A simple tool that was missing in the iTunes App. Able to fit people's needs for menu bar space. Just one problem. I got an applescript error when it was downloading a new update even though it is the latest version.

MSILSBY  Great little app.

A couple of changes would be great though. Firstly, being able to turn on and off the half star ratings. It makes the list almost too long. The other one is the ability to simply click the required star rating on the menu bar, instead of having to drop down a menu. Posibly another feature that could be turned on and off?

IMPROV, PASTENCE  Hello all.

My site is currently down due to late payment to my host. This should be corrected in the next few days.

Again, sorry for the inconvenience.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  It appears that the developer is switching his service provider (the server to host his site and files).

I know that the developer's site was accessible, as was the download, just a very few days ago.

Likely the developer will resurface soon.

GCOGHILL  This is pretty cool. I was hoping to see the "menubar shows rating" feature as compact as the default single star, my menubar is so crowded.

Perhaps, since the star is 5-pointed, there might be a way to use a single star to reflect the rating - empty/outline (no rating), 2-4 points fill the star incrementally, then full for 5 stars? Each click on the star increases the fill/rating, cycling back to empty in case you change your mind. Just a thought.

Perhaps the 1/2 stars should be optional, that menu is pretty long.

TOPHER33W  The developer shouldn't be using an image to which he doesn't own the copyright. The star icon is a Nintendo copyrighted image.

MSILSBY  Ah, but if no financial gain is made, then is it really a copyright violation? Think of all those avatar's out there who similarly 'violate' the copyright laws.

Or not.
