JAVASCRIPT  Hi all!

I must have done something wrong during install with this thing, because it's nowhere to be seen in my Applications folder... Found some refenreces to it in an Opt folder in my MacintoshHD main folder, but nothing at user level.

How come?

Aside from that, I can't really judge how good this product is, but I remember installing Zimbra Desktop (now shareware?) and using it for a while. It worked fine, but there's one thing I sorely missed that Thunderbird has: an ad-blocker... So I dumped it. I'd like to try this suite, but first I have to install it...

MACSOLU  I believe this only works on Mac OS X Server, not on end-user computers.

****.

MSWFUJOWDFFYC  After a large deployment on OS X Server hosts, Zimbra has stopped supporting OS X on ppc. Why?

No idea.

But do your homework if have an investment in ppc hardware that is more than adequate for your needs before buying.

KRIS BROWNE  The ownership by Yahoo doesn't trouble me as much as what will happen if(when is more likely) microsoft buys Yahoo. As someone else said, Zimbra really offers a well designed Exchange competitor stack, and I can't see MS letting that stand.

MAXIMXYGO  Absolutely no changes whatsoever, besides renaming a Zimblet from "yahoo maps" to "yahoo local." Yahoo plans to (and by all appearances does) operate Zimbra as a separate entity, most likely injecting ZCS components into their online webmail offerings. I know it freaks some people out that Yahoo owns it now (why I don't know... yahoo's turned out to be a pretty respectable company these days), but I (nor other zimbra employees) can see any benefit from Yahoo changing anything about it, nor from killing it outright. It's a truly unique Exchange competitor, and makes its owners decent money... they only benefit from serving their existing target audience better.

MAXIMXYGO  Quite simply the best collaboration suite I've ever set up, administered, and used as an end user. The openness of Zimbra really makes it shine beyond the already *amazing* set of built-in functionality. It works wonderfully with iCal (subscribe/publish), WebDAV for "briefcase," plus a TON of other killer features, including an iPhone-optimized interface for mobile devices.

It not only acts as a very cost-effective "replacement" for Outlook, it bests it in every way. I have users using the native AJAX interface, users attached via IMAP using Outlook, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail and MobilMail (iPhone), even a few using the chat functions via Jabber in iChat. It all just works, and works *wonderfully.*

Top notch software. The Open Source version is great and FREE (that's what we use), and the Network (paid) edition is stellar, and very inexpensive.

JAMUS  Have you been able to tell any additions/subtractions due to Yahoo? I know several companies that were about to switch over and then heard the news about Yahoo buying it. The switch over plans then stopped cold. A shame too, because it was (maybe still is?) a nice suite.

REALISO  Sorry, but this is a collaboration suite, not just an app. I'm in no way associated with Zimbra but I think you didn't really understand what Zimbra is.

Zimbra is similar to Exchange with OWA. If you don't know what that means and/or have never installed Exchange + OWA, don't even *bother* thinking about considering the option of installing Zimbra.

This is very specific server software and needs an administrator to install - a really good systems administrator with Unix experience. So if you are looking a drag-and-drop-installable groupware (there is no such thing), then this is definitely the wrong app for you.

Zimbra is really nice, you can just go to the website and check it out, there is a demo-version installed where you can test it and see if it could fit your companys requirements and then tell your sysadmin to have a look at it and see if he can install it.

LAURENT@SGP  There is a commercial use for this in Singapore. It support hundreds of users. It seems to work well for them. However, I do not know what hardware platform was it installed on. I do not have an account to use it but have seen it in use.

GAOSHAN  I'm not reviewing this as I has trouble getting it to work properly.

I AM going to comment on the amount of "stuff" installed and changed on my computer. Zimbra needs to make a number of fundamental changes to your system. For example, it created it's own user and group without asking. I understand that it needs to do this to work but if you install this you need to be aware that uninstalling it will be much more complicated than your average OS X application. There are files and logs and configurations that are changed all over the place. If you have some skill with unix and the command line, you will be able to track them all down... eventually.

STROB  You are not kidding! This thing installed several packages that required DeInstaller to be run about six times. Even then the directory structure was left in /opt which required command line removal.

In the end couldn't get this running; kept complaining about DNS host name on setup. No app is worth this trouble.

GDANKO  Most folks I've spoken to have said it's pretty easy to set up. Plus, I've set up Exchange and it's certainly no picnic compared to Zimbra. Plus, the price can't be beat.
