FORMICA  I have tried AppZapper, and it's OK. However, when compared with AppCleaner 1.2.2, the difference is STRIKING. AppCleaner does most of the things that all of the reviewers below ask for, it finds ALL of the files associated with the main app you are deleting — EVEN FILES THAT ALL OTHER SUCH APPS OFTEN MISS — it is totally unobtrusive and doesn't impact your CPU or memory AT ALL as far as I can tell, IT WORKS AUTOMATICALLY when you maybe forget to startup AppCleaner and just toss an app into the trash ITS SmartDelete CATCHES IT AND ALSO AUTOMATICALLY CATCHES ALL ITS ASSOCIATED FILES AND OFFERS TO TRASH THEM FOR YOU! And perhaps most amazing is that it is so superior to all other such apps but is FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE, FREE! If you don't believe me, just check out the comments and reviews on AppCleaner's MacUpdate.com (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25276) and VersionTracker.com pages (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32740&mode=feedback). That level of user satisfaction is far, far higher than all other such apps, illustrating that people love it for all its capabilities and performance — not just its price (which, again, is FREE!).

When you try AppCleaner, set the preferences to "Protect launched apps," "Protect default apps," and "Enable 3D transitions," don't forget to turn on SmartDelete, then one-by-one select the "Applications," "Widgets" and "Others" icons at the top of AppCleaner's main window, and with each one select the "Options" menu (in the Menubar) then "Select All" to instruct AppCleaner to protect all those apps, widgets and other resources from being accidentally deleted, then you can uncheck one-by-one all the ones that you don't want AppCleaner to protect. Trust me, you'll love this app with it set this way! Enjoy!

(Oh, and BTW, I am in no way affiliated with the makers of AppCleaner — I don't even know them. I just LOVE IT when truly great software is made available for FREE, and I feel such magnanimous developers should be promoted whenever possible, even when it's a bit annoying (as this comment is because it's in another app's MacUpdate space).

GRYPHONENT  The answer is that they gave away so many copies for free and participated in so many promotiones that it became a joke. People, including myself, had 5+ licenses (though only one serial was actually sent per email). With updates "free for life," the developer has razed the market and moved on. Why update an app if there's no money in it anymore? I've moved on to CleanApp, which is much more advanced than AppZapper.

EASER  I tried this program as well as AppCleaner, AppDelete, and Forklift. I tried all on a program called DiskOrder. Not one of them found the folder in Library/Application support called "LikeMac" which clearly has a folder in it titled "Disk Order." I'll stick to deleting these things manually.

EVOLVE75  I have the same experience as PumpkinWhite below. I tried uninstalling a program with both AppZapper (got as part of the MH bundle) and Forklift. Forklift consistently finds more application files than AZ. Ended up uninstalling AppZapper (by using Forklift of course).

PUMPKINWHITE  I just received appzapper as part of a bundle. The first thing i did is compare it with the 'Delete App' functionality of forklift. In each and every application i tried, forklift caught more files on my system than appzapper. Sometimes appzapper would miss out a file in 'receipts' folder or sometimes in 'caches' folder and sometimes in both. Considering appzapper is a program dedicated to this functionality, I am pretty surprised by this. If all application deleters out there were missing the same files then I wouldn't have been so harsh on appzapper. But the fact that another application catches extra files every time is inexcusable.

SYHARRIS  AppZapper is not totally reliable. As I have found after using AppZapper for a while, now, it will NOT always remove every last file of all apps.

After using AppZapper, I've always rechecked with EasyFind (available here at MacUpdate) to see if all files of my deleted app have, in fact, been removed, and have found that a fair amount of time they have not.

But, then, there are no application deleting apps currently available, that I can find, that are totally reliable.

Your best bet would be to just use EasyFind to delete your applications and their files.

It takes a bit longer than using AppZapper but EasyFind IS about as good as it gets for locating/deleting files. Yes, it's that good....and it's free, too.

TICE  Hmm, I paid for the app but appdelete does the job as well (or as bad) as appzapper for free:

After installing Dr. DivX and the DivX codecs including two apps (DivX Converter.app, DivX Player.app) Appzapper doesn't find the folder Dr. DivX in the application support, and none (N-O-N-E) of the DivX components (Frameworks, Internet Plug-Ins, Application Support, QuickTime, PreferencePanes)!!!

Don't spend money on that, it's not worth it

OLIPOWER  A quite overestimated app. It almost never finds all the files related to an app.

Even similarly named files, containing the apps name!

And ever since I started using my computers non-admin as a standard-user, AppZapper will ask me to write my admin password once or more for each and every app I delete.

So whenever I feel like cleaning up my applications folder, I have to sit there and feel like an idiot typing my admin username and password like a zillion-times.

Typing it once for the whole batch should be enough.

FAHLMAN  I can guarantee you that you don't want your standard user account to have the ability to delete files from the locations where AppZapper is deleting these files. If you were smart you would use Fast User Switching to log in to your Admin account and delete the application you needed deleted and then use FUS to switch back to your standard account. You want the security of a standard account but the power of a admin account? You can't have it both ways.

OLIPOWER  Thank you for your words. But please read my last line again:

"Typing it once for the whole batch should be enough."

Of course I wanna type my password, but not 30 or 40 times to delete 20 apps! Pretty repetitive task.

I could, like you say, log into my admin account, delete the apps I would like to delete. However, that's not clever, as that would not get rid of the user-related files, them being in my normal user-account!

I guess the purpose of AppZapper is to get rid of all the app-related files right? Then your solution is a bit half-hearted.

ESPIRIDION  Are people these days satisfied with such mediocrity?

I’ve tried to use AppZapper a few times, and each time its performance is flawed.

1. It has identified for deletion applications that are unrelated to the application I want to delete.

2. It has only partially identified the files associated with the application I want to delete.

3. The Genie tells me its been 5 years and 6 years since I used two applications when the truth is that I have used them within the past 6-12 months. An application I used today -and I use it daily- is shown as being used one week ago. AppZapper also indicates I have not used a program in 10 years. I did not even have my G5 ten years ago!

Although I’m a registered user, I prefer to use Tinker Tool System which provides more information when one wants to uninstall an application, or FileBuddy which identifies associated files more thoroughly than AppZapper. Even doing a Spotlight search would be better than using AppZapper.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Well considering that it moves everything to the trash and you have to empty the trash in order to remove the apps, it would be completely your own fault for having to reinstall your OS. Try thinking and observing the situation before giving an app one star because of your own mishaps. You could've very well moved the apps back because AppZapper moves them to the trash. It does not delete everything permanently. This is so in case you do something drastic, you can undo the changes.

MOMIJIGARI  Easy to use, and excellent performance. It finds the files that are scattered all over my harddrive, and zaps them to kingdom come - but not until I have the chance to verify it is what I want.

Yes, there is a small fee and it is well-deserved. I registered an early version, and have been able to upgrade for free ever since.

What astonishes me are the numerous posts linking to other apps. Do you think other people can't search for themselves if they aren't happy with *this* app? A tad insolent, imo.

CARDBOARD CANARY  I downloaded the AppZapper trial, and it works very nicely. The drag and drop interface is very quick and easy, and the program seems to succeed in finding files related to the unwanted program and getting rid of them.

The price seems fair, but I hardly ever seem to have the need to fully uninstall a program, simply because I don't try out a ton of new software. So, for me, it doesn't quite seem worth the money, but if you find yourself frequently trying and deleting new applications, this might be very useful for you.

JAZZADDICT  The fact that an .app which is used to wipe out other .apps has been one of the most linked to and talked programs in the past few months is kind of ironic. I mean... it's even created its own verb. I don't uninstall applications... I Zap them! I have also adopted the word into my everyday vocab. I don't dump girlfriends... I Zap them! Perferences and all. I've noticed I download much more freeware/demoware since buying this .app. Great application... or should I say anti-application.

JAZZADDICT  I like how it indexes pref panes, widgets, and internet plug-ins. Though some people might find this useless because they are confident that they can easily zap .apps via a spotlight search and draging to trash, for others who are more paranoid, this works. This .app does what it is meant to do well. Period.

GOODENOUGH  AppZapper doesn't always remove all the application files, except when the only files are the application file and a preference (.plist) file. For me it has always missed the easy to over look files, such as files in the application support folder.

For some reason AppZapper flags the downloaded disk image files for deletion. This could be problem if you are doing a reinstall.

For me it is more accurate and a money saver to use Spotlight to search for application files.

NARF_TM  This application works great for removing application that were installed by drag and drop. It does not work well for applications that were install through an installer. For example, iPhoto is installed through an installer. If you use AppZapper, IPhoto , a plist and a bunch of packages show up in the list. This is very deceiving. You can look at what was installed by these packages in the terminal using lsbom. If you want to look at /Library/Receipts/iPhoto.pkg, you would run 'lsbom /Library/Receipts/iPhoto.pkg/Contents/Archive.bom'. You can see that there were files installed into /Library/Documentation/Applications, /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and many more. For this product to be complete, it should take these files into consideration. I have emailed this company's support many times over the last month and received NO response. I really like the concept of this application, and hope they add support for this in the future.

DP-G4-450GUY  This amazes me. Why would anyone pay good money for something that is so easy to accomplish using a small touch of effort?

Uninstall an app? Drag the app icon to the trash. Empty trash.

Associated files? Do a Find - on both visible and invisible items - on the applications name. The results will provide you with all the associated prefs, app support files, library files, etc. Select, and move to trash. Empty trash.

This might be useful for your grandparents, but .....

By the way, I'd be extremely careful using this since the method of testing it and number of testers is not documented well enough to get a safe feeling.

CHIEFTED  This is an app that after getting the updates for a new mac and loading LaunchBar (or Butler whichever app launcher I am fond of at the moment) THIS is the app I always (or will be) loading next.

I haven't had any problem with it at all. It does get rid of stray files that are left when you drag an app to the trash (the plist leaps to mind right now).

It won't let you delete an application that is currently open. I don't know if that is the problems others were having but I haven't encountered an app that AppZapper didn't like to zap.

I love this application.

MARSONIST  I have only had this app for a few short days, but it has already proven it's worth. I enjoy taking new programs for a spin but for each one that I keep there are 3 or 4 that I don't. This program allows me to easily delete all of the files associated with these programs and prevents me from cluttering my hard-drive with remnants of old programs.

I e-mailed the developer a question concerning the program and was shocked to see a reply in less than 5 minutes.

Between the usefulness of the program, frequency with which the developer makes updates, and the speed with which questions are answered, I feel that my money was very well spent.

ARGLBORPS  As someone stated there are still some apps that AppZapper can't successfully zap yet. But I want to put the emphasis on not YET.

This app has been getting updates almost every week. If you buy it you get free updates for life and at the current updating pace they'll have covered most, even quite exotic apps (meaning installing their files in exotic places ;-) within a few months.

Big thumbs up, this is a very helpful app and it really encourages to try out more software and therefore actually buying more software.

FREAKYFINK  I "zapped" GarageBand but later found all of the demo songs and loops (1.5GB!) that were left behind. Same happened when AppZapper ridded me of iDVD but left me with almost a GigaByte of iDVD themes. I've lost confidence that this otherwise lightweight, speedy app targets all associated files for a desired application to be deleted.

SIMICHAVEL  AppZapper requires you to drag and drop the .app, then it goes and finds all related files. But what are you going to do to find all those files related to apps you deleted before you got AppZapper? Were you able to d&d, say, a preference file or some other file related to the app, and AppZapper could still reconstruct all the related pieces and zap them - now THAT would be helpful.

JETSGO  This application is great for quickly removing a new program you just wanted to test. It almost always finds the associated preferences and support files, removing them is simple.

One new feature I would like to see is the introduction of a contextual menu that opens AppZapper. Then I might fork over the $13 USD (a bit expensive, I might add).

AAH  Can you explain this comment?

Uninstaller seems to take the "snapshot now, install, snapshot then" approach -- anything changed between snapshots is obviously new. What it will obviously miss is anything changed after the second snapshot -- and if it doesn't actually *do* a second snapshot, you're in even worse luck, since every change since the initial installation is marked as a new file (correct me if I'm wrong, please).

AppZapper takes a programmatic approach -- potentially imperfect, but also potentially perfect, and in either case *much* faster than the Uninstaller approach.

SZABESZ  "AppZapper takes a programmatic approach -- potentially imperfect"

I think this is the case, as reported by others. You cannot find installed files without registering them during the install or right after the install process. Of course you can write algorithms to hunt for them, but it cannot be perfect.

Uninstaller is slow of course because on the seer number of files an OS X volume can contain. And taking snapshots is the user's responsibility of course. But this can at least find all the files installed in case it is user properly.

(How are you going to delete with AppZapper the kernel xtension installed by Virtual PC, for example?)

Somebody should combine "fseventer" and "Uninstaller" and Mac users would get a fast solution. I wish I had time to develop that.....

SUBLINEAR  I've noticed this as well (some of what it suggests you remove may b unrelated files, as you pointed out) but 95% of the time it does a swell job.

It should be noted that AppZapper doesn't just "zap" all of the files it finds (including unrelated ones) -- it presents users with a list of files before zapping them, and you can easily unselect the unrelated ones.

As a power user I like AppZapper because it saves me time (by not having to find all of the files to delete myself, as I've done in the past). I don't think its ready for primetime yet though (like say, users like my mom) due to issues like this one (she would have screwed up her Quicktime installation).

KIDDAILEY  Wow! *Great* interface design. Very easy to use.

It often fails to remove apps completely though, because it appars to only be searching for matching filename data. It won't find installer packages if they are in the library/receipts folders, or any special hidden files or symlinks that the app may have created either for example.

And of course, I also wish taht it would allow me to drag a receipt package into it and have it scan the receipt to find files to remove in addition to scanning for matching files.

If those two things are added to this app, I will *definitely* be purchasing it.

PETER DAUGULIS  This is definitely a must have thumbs up app from developers Brian and Austin. Like most OSX users who have grown comfortable with their system, they start to muck around with installing every new app that comes out. They (we) soon realize that, like most of them, they end up in the Trash. Great, but as we all now know, that’s not the end of them. Fortunately, NOT like Windows, the remenants are usually folders and simple preferance files, help files….Royal Pain to delete by hand.

AppZapper to the rescue. I have used it a multitude of times, first on some old secondary hard drive apps I know I will never use, and then on some main stream apps that have become out dated.

Fast, simple, thorough…. and safe. You are always in control with a simple “check box” away of NOT deleting something. You can also configure appzapper to keep it’s paws off some critical apps for the “just in case” approach. The addition of a log to follow what appzapper has done is also a great perk.

Its interface is as simple, uncluttered and as straight forward as you want it to be.

…and here is another app that Apple may hopefully swallow (incorporate) up in its next OS release and compensate Brian and Austin with a 60 foot yacht and then some….

Good work guys!!!

IDJSTER  I can drag an application to the trash. I can find an assumed .plist file in the prefs folder. I can check for a cache or files in the Application Support folder. I can do all this and it has taken me more time than I like to think to uninstall apps that I've decided to try out and then have decided to trash. This application makes it so simple and so quick. This is absolutely brilliant! I only had to use it twice to decide that I had to register it. What a great, simple idea. Yes, there's a chance it might miss something, but there's a greater chance that I will, so AppZapper gets the nod. Wonderful work!

FRANKKO1  For basic apps I guess it works, but you can just save yourself the $13 and use Spotlight.

For more complex apps (FCP, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office) AppZapper doesn't come close to catching all the files used by the target apps, so you're better off using Spotlight (all AppZaper found for Entourage was the app, while Spotlight at least found the Entourage files in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data).

And I don't know if it's a flaw with the app or a design decision, but AppZapper doesn't seem to check for files outside of your user directory and the /Applications directory (in other words, it doesn't appear to look in /Library/Application Support/ or /Users/Shared/, where Macromedia and Apple put a bunch of files).

If you want to save youself $13, keep in mind that for apps by some of the "better" developers (like Panic), look for stuff in Applications/, ~/Library/Application Support/, and ~/Library/Preferences. Or just use Spotlight.

If you're trying to clean up apps that install files in non-standard locations, AppZapper won't do much good, I'm afraid. And how do you know if the app you're trying to trash installs files in non-standard locations? Good question. Unfortunately, AppZapper isn't the answer. At least not yet.

GRYPHONENT  AppZapper is a nice application that eventually addresses a long-standing problem with MacOS X: deinstallation. However, AppZapper does not do more than searching for associated files that bear the same name as the application dragged onto it. For example “Adobe Photoshop” will only show the files that bear the words “adobe” and “photoshop.” Pretty much the same result you will get through the finder. Any file that is installed and does not bear the program’s name is neglected... which are unfortunately quite a lot of files when you install Adobe Photoshop. Some of them don’t have “adobe” or “photoshop” in their name, which means that AppZapper won’t list them.

Having said that, here’s what AppZapper should do: run in the background and track files installed through an application or installer, then keep internally a list of those files and “remember” that list until the time comes to deinstall the program (smartly cross-referencing whether any of the files is also used by another program).

As it stands, this is an expensive gimmick that is not addressing an obvious problem. Give it a test run and judge for yourself.

Like Epson Scan software for example, comes with some color profiles for a handful of scanners and App Support extensions "EPSON USB Scanner" and "EPSON FW Scanner" which AppZapper doesn't zap.

Up til now it only found the related prefs file of any given app. Maybe this will be improved in the future.

MDAMLI  At last! The application OS X is in lack of!

For someone addicted to MacUpdate as I am, this application is *perfect*

It finds preference files, application supports and so on that you normally don't look up and delete.

Many people think you can uninstall an application by just dragging the .app into the trashcan, but truth is you have to look up Application Support, Preferences and so on, and this application does it for you.

I'd say it's well worth the money.

Five stars out of everything, although I can't back up the stability as I haven't used it long enough to check for crashing issues (none yet though! ;) ).

An application everyone should have.
