PLASTERPYRUS Why does this developer give such erroneous information about where to get a copy of Descent 2 where all I've gotten of the suggestions is strike outs. I own Descent for OS9 but that wont work and the one that you could get from MacUpdate D2X, is no longer available and I don't even know if that would work. (Version 1.14.60)

JEFFREY MCPHEETERS Okay, the latest 1.9.116 version still crashes at launch on any of our G3 iBooks, even though they have the video ram qualifications to play the game. They work on older version 1.9.66 and previous, but the 3rd party missions are not available on those versions. On the PowerMac G5 and the PowerBook G4s the latest version continues to work fine and restores the functionality of 3rd party missions. That's a good sign. Just wish all our iBooks would also work with this so everyone could join the same mission. (Version 1.9.116)

JEFFREY MCPHEETERS This is a much needed work in progress, and hopefully will see fulfillment in a truly stable, cross-platform release in the not too distant future. As it is, if you are a Descent lover, remember to keep the incremental updates around, just in case a new update breaks on your particular setup. That way you can get back to the older version and continue playing at least. 1.9.69 and 1.9.91, the most recent updates, are broken on our iBook G3s. 1.9.69 just freezes in the startup screen, leaving a black, blank window. It eventually crashes after a few minutes. 1.9.91 crashes almost immediately on launch. So we continue to use 1.9.66 as the most recent version that works on those. 1.9.69 and 1.9.91 do work fine on the G4 PowerBook and the PowerMac G5. 3rd party missions also no longer work on any of our systems, iBooks, Powerbooks, or G5s. They just are not being read by the program. I've heard from other Mac users that the missions recently stopped working for them as well. Hopefully we'll get a fix for this. Someone is looking into it. Overall, the game plays very well, considering the difficulty the developers must have in attempting to do what they are doing without much funding or support. Kudos to them for the time and effort put in to what I think was one of the all time best 3D games ever devised. (Version 1.9.91)

CYBERCAT Many thanks to the makers of this for creating it, AND keeping it up to date! Plays great on my Mac mini, it's wonderful that this old classic is once again playable on modern operating systems. Make sure to read the readme document included with the download and follow the instructions carefully. I ended up not being able to just copy the plain old files directly from my Descent 2 CD and instead had to actually install Descent 2 on my Windows XP machine, then copy the files from the install directory to the data folder (which you create) on my mac. Once again, top notch! (Version 1.6.171)

LKEARL I commented earlier that D2X-XL 1.6.162 runs well on my iMac G5. Since that time I have received repeatable invalid polygon error messages at the end of level 3 where you come around a corner to see the reactor that shoots the red balls. Whether I approach from the left corner or the right corner I get the same error message. So I've changed to using D2X and it works well, but the mouse isn't as responsive as on D2X-XL. If not for this invalid polygon error, I'd keep using D2X-XL. (Version 1.6.170)

SIMX Custom levels are never in .exe format. There are usually two files (a .hog and a .mn2) for custom levels and they should work fine. Descent 1 levels should also work fine -- if they do not, please post a bug report at http://www.descentbb.net/ in the D2X-XL forum. (Version 1.6.122)

JKXZDF Well... when I go to the "3rd party singleplayer" section of descent2.de there are several levels that are an exe. Some of which are "encounter at farpoint 2," "sequel of the entropy experiment," and "obsidian." (Version 1.6.122)
| Aug 1 2006 |
SIMX The .exe files should be expanded by Stuffit Expander; the .exe files are not the level files themselves. I tested out the file from Encounter at FarPoint 2 -- once expanded with Stuffit, the required eaf2.hog and eaf2.mn2 files can be placed in the required folder. I tested the map, and it works with D2X-XL on the Mac. (Version 1.6.122)

KARX11ERX Are you using the PC Descent 1 data? All missions on my Descent 2 site are contained in compressed archives. Usually these are zip files. Some missions are however self-extracting archives and hence MS Windows executables. That's how they were presented by their developers. Please follow the directions given by simX, the MAC developer of this application, on how to install them. (Version 1.6.122)
| Aug 6 2006 |
JKXZDF I had no idea I could use exe files with stuffit. I uncompressed it and the level works fine now. Another thing... will those other high-rez textures work on Mac soon? I know the high-rez pyro works since I use it but the others like the doors and walls don't seem to work yet. (Version 1.6.130)
| Aug 6 2006 |
SIMX Mmhmm, Stuffit has been able to make and expand self-extracting archives for a while now. As for the hi-res textures, yes, those work already too. :) You need to put a "-hires_textures 1" line in your d2x.ini file. Also, go to [Configure --> Miscellaneous] and make sure "Show Expert Options" is on. Then go to [Configure --> Render Options --> Advanced Render Options] and make sure the render and texture quality are set to high. (Version 1.6.130)
| Aug 6 2006 |
JKXZDF I guess my copy of d2x-xl 1.6.130 is just lazy since it still doesn't show the high-rez textures... excluding the pyro-gl one. (Version 1.6.130)

KARX11ERX The installation instructions state clearly that you need the retail game data. I am not rich though, so I am not gonna spend my own money on one - because I really only need one to fix D2X-XL (and make its Mac users happy). You can support me by donating some money to me. At the rate donations are currently coming, I will be able to purchase even a used Mac in about 5 years or so. L66- I also finally got this app to work. You need the Descent 2 retail data files, it won't work with the D2 demo or Descent 1 retail data files alone. Maybe an error dialog or some sign that it can't find the data should be added, at first I just thought the whole app just didn't work at my machine. This port looks nice. There are still some issues though. It looks like the d2x.ini config file is totally ignored. Setting full screen or automatic player loading options had no effect. The application 'forgets' the full screen setting, so you have to enable it each time you start the game in the options. Also, when canceling a game and starting a new one, D2X crashes here. It is stable otherwise. CD Audio does work, but is skipping/not right sometimes, no matter which CD you use. The tracks aren't played in the right order yet, and volume is not adjustable. Some things that are supposed to be breakable in Descent 1 levels aren't, and things that are not supposed to be breakable there, such as lights, are :). I also don't loose the feeling the gameplay of this port is slightly faster as the original game was, but that can be just me. Other then that this is the nicest OS X port I've seen so far, having most of the things the original Descent 1/2 had in place. Now, just some polishing, maybe the ability to play MP3/whatever music so you won't need the CD, and it will be complete. Great work so far! (Version 1.5.86)

KARX11ERX You can launch d2-xl with the command line option -debug-printlog. It will then create a file named d2x.log in the application folder (that's at least where it should be). You can open it with a text editor and search for 'd2x.ini' to determine where d2x-xl tries to find it. From what you say about d2x-xl forgetting fullscreen settings I rather have the suspicion that it reads d2x.ini from a location you don't expect it to, and that fullscreen is disabled in that file. (Version 1.5.95)
| Feb 3 2006 |
L66- Sorry, I'm late. I made a log, but apart from a lot of other 'file not found' errors, it didn't contain any info about the .ini file. I know it loads it however, the automatic pilot loading works now. Seems the name is case sensitive, and while Descent uses just uppercase characters, if you make a name with mixed characters the pilot file will contain them. So, fixing the name from pilot in Pilot fixed that. Still fullscreen is being forgotten each time, although d2xxl remembers the resolution. I just downloaded the new version, and the full screen option is gone... ?? I'll send both logs if I can find your email on the site. Oh, and I succesfully finished Descent 1 (27 levels). Worked nice! The AI is different (D2 AI) and some sounds and graphics are different, but overall it was OK. Descent 2 probably works perfect, but I liked 1 more. (Version 1.5.108)

You may want to look in the wikipedia for the Descent computer game. Descent pits you in a battle in underground mines infested with robots whos AI has been messed up by a hostile computer virus. Descent is a mixture between a regular 1st person shooter and a flight sim. Just think of a groundpounder with strafing along the vertical axis added, and allowing you to roll along the ship's longitudinal axis. You will need to practise for a while be able to control the ship and keep your orientation, as often there is no real up and down, or floor and ceiling. In the beginning, enabling "auto levelling" may be helpful, as it aligns your ship along the nearest plane. Once you are more skilled, this feature is rather a hindrance though. As Descent 1/2 are rather old games, all you have to do is to shoot everything that moves (apart from the Guidebot), and pick up everything that floats around (weapons and other stuff). Eventually you will find up to three color coded keys allowing you access to locked areas of the level. Various powerups will help you in the game: You can find invulnerability powerups, cloaking devices, head lights, and ammo racks allowing you to carry more ammunition. There is no inventory system, so Invuls and cloaks are activated when you pick them up and work for a while. To replenish your shields, pick up the blue orbs destroyed robots leave behind. To fill up your energy, pick up the yellow energy sparks or find a fuel center (usually these have golden sparks twinkling inside them). Descent offers several cockpit views. All of them display your remaining shields and energy and currently selected primary and secondary weapons. You can display several types of auxiliary views using the Alt+F2 and Alt+F3 keys (rear view, guidebot view, map view). To finish the level, destroy the reactor hidden somewhere in it and fly through the exit before the mine blows up. Instead of a reactor, you will encounter an especially big, tough and mean boss robot every once in while. It is a good idea to save the big missiles for these encounters. ;) The Guidebot is only available in Descent 2 (and 3). It can guide you to power ups, keys, robots and the reactor or boss robot. Again, for skilled players he's rather a nuisance. ;) Descent 1/2 offer a map in the form of a 3D wireframe to help you orienting in the often maze-like levels. You will need some practise to be able to interpret it though. Special areas like energy centers are colored in the map. Gaps in the walls displayed in the automap often are hint to hidden doors and secret areas. Some levels contain teleports (a floating red appearance) that lead to entire secret levels. Usually these levels rather contain puzzles you need to solve to access all the goodies contained there. You can enter and leave secret levels several times, as long as you don't destroy their reactor. It is not possible to save in a secret level, so may be a good idea to collect some stuff, return from the secret level and make a save game, before entering it again to gather more stuff. Find a manual on D2X-XL configuration here: http://www.descent2.de/d2x-manual-1.html. (Version 1.5.86)

KARX11ERX I know at least three, ShadowFury333 being one of them, and two guys who have registered on the DescentBB. As far as I could find out, the first disk image contains the d2x-xl app and another disk image containing the SDL library the app needs. I am sorry for these complications, but I have no direct influence on this. It is also not particularly helpful to state 'it doesn't work' but not to explain *what* exactly doesn't work. As I mentioned here already, I don't have a Mac, and I cannot afford one. So if you're not a Mac noob, instead of moaning all the time, you could help me to get an installation format that is easier to handle than the current one. If each one of the Mac D2X-XL (would-be) users would donate just USD 2,50 to me, I could afford a used Mac, and believe me, it would me take less than a week to get the program fully running. As it is now, your support is non-existant, so you shouldn't expect miracles from this free of charge effort of mine. If I had quit from a task comparably 'daunting' as digging through two (let it be three, if you like) nested disk images, there would be no D2X-XL at all. How about getting more constructive in the future, like the Windows users who have helped me to make D2X-XL what it is now, or the Linux ppl who are even sending bug fixes? You want the program? Do something for it. I am not your slave. karx11erx (Version 1.5.70)

SHADOWFURY333 An excellent effort by Diedel and Kaelan on this one. This game is turning out to be of excellent quallity, once the bugs get worked out. However, this is being done actively as I type, so I'm sure it will be taken care of soon. The game itself has greatly improved since Descent 2 and D2X. With the addition of UDP/IP networking, new gamemodes, and more modern graphics processing options, I can see Descent 2 gaining more popularity in the coming months. I would expect it to overtake Descent 3 gaming, as Descent 2 was always more highly favored by the community, and Descent 3 support is non-existant. The graphics, while not necessarily the most important part of the game, have also improved. It is now possible to run D2X-XL at resolutions up to 1600x1200 and 1920x1200 for widescreen users. Also, the addition of colored dynamic lights is welcomed, although unfortunately it is somewhat cube-based, so don't be surprise if the area seems a bit better lit then it should, but for a 10-year-old game, I'm still impressed. The gameplay hasn't changed much since the original Descent 2. Although other Mac users will be happy to know that custom levels are supported(if I recall correctly, the original Mac Descent 2 had problems with this). Now, although the game has improved greatly, there are still a fair amount of glaring bugs, such as the inability to place D2X-XL in any arbitrary folder(ask your system administrator about letting you install in /Applications/Games/D2X-XL/) or the inability to play more than one game during one session. However, As I said before, though, these are being fixed as I type. D2X-XL has greatly improved Descent 2, but there is still a long way to go. Fortunately, the developers are willing and able to get it working perfectly. (Version 1.5.61)

SPAMMASTERD I also can't run Descent 2 (D2X) on my iMac G4 700Mhz, 10.4.3. What gives? It runs just fine on my PowerMac 466 Mhz, 10.4.3 at work! (hee hee) Really though, why is this a problem? Do different Macs, even those running the same OS, handle files differently? If any developers read this thread maybe this bit of info will help. When I restarted my Mac, which I had to do because Descent got stuck on the black screen at startup, the disk image and all of the files were nowhere to be found on my computer. Even searching with Spotlight turned up no results. Like I never even downloaded it. This sucks, I want to play some Descent at home! From the other responses, I know that this has something to do with my particular computer. Can anybody resolve this problem once and for all? (Version 1.5.44)

KARX11ERX d2x-xl running on one computer but not on another could rather have something to do with gfx drivers. If files are gone after resetting a machine during a program freeze, these file could have been open, file info kept somewhere in memory, and due to the reset that data wasn't written back to disk. I have at least heard that you can destroy your whole file system on Linux/Unix boxes that way, and OS X seems to be pretty similar to Unix. (Version 1.5.44)

KARX11ERX A potential fix for the crash problem might be to place all Descent 2 data and the d2x-xl executable in a folder named /Application/Games/D2X-XL. (Put the mission files in /Application/Games/D2X-XL/Missions as usual.) From a (d2x-xl generated) logfile another user has sent me today I had the impression that otherwise the OS X version will mess up folders. Dietfrid (Version 1.5.44)

KARX11ERX If problems persist and you don't mind, please register at http://www.descentbb.net/phpbb and post bug reports in the Old Skool Descent area, Max OS X thread. I am not doing the Mac OS X version of D2X-XL myself, so I depend on your cooperation to get this bird flying for everybody on OS X. ;) (Version 1.5.44)

KARX11ERX Please regard that the Descent 2 data folder has changed to '/Applications/Games/D2X-XL' for v1.5.44. Please make sure to read the installation instructions (http://www.descent2.de/d2x-install.html). Dietfrid (Version 1.5.44)

TVALLEAU Ditto: crash on launch. I've sent off the crash log to the author... and yes: it's in the share directory. (Version 1.5.44)

so far no crash log has arrived at my e-mail account. Dietfrid (Version 1.5.44)

as I take a 2nd look at your comment, I start to believe that you haven't read the (changed) installation instructions on my Descent 2 site. D2 data folder has been made more Mac conformant and is now /Applications/Games/D2X-XL. (Version 1.5.44)

a crash log had only arrived at my e-mail address after I had contacted you. The crash log hints to D2X-XL not finding the D2 data on your machine. Your post states a data path that is not being used any more - see the latest installation instructions. You declined the offer to get the source code yourself and help us in fixing your problems. You obviously are not acknowledging the fact that this is project done in our leisure time, brought to the public for free, where support is welcome. (Version 1.5.44)

TVALLEAU My gosh. I sent in two crash logs. I even explained that crash logs append data at the bottom of the list, not the top. I put the program in all the places suggested during my attempts to get it to run (the share folder; the games folder; etc) I placed the SDL in first one, then the other, and finally both frameworks folders. I re-installed the original game; I downloaded and installed three recent versions of the software. Finally I sent off a second crash log. In return for this effort, I received letters villifying me as "a butt"; suggesting that I get the code and compile it myself and so on. Now when you consider that I went to a lot more effort than any of the several -other- people who posted the same problem (crash), I'm not sure why I was singled out for attack. I tried to politely simply refuse further communications, but instead received a long letter letting me know what an idiot I am, and telling me to "read the instructions" (which I'd done about twenty times.) Look: there are many other people having trouble with this software. I -understand- that you're doing it voluntarily. But so what? That's YOUR choice. I tried to help by providing crash logs and so on. PLEASE: don't attack those who are trying to help you. If you don't like the criticism, pull the product. Finally: PLEASE stop emailing me. this is not a platform for you to start a flame war, and I told you before to stick with the truth. #1 I only received a crash log after contacting you from my e-mail address. #2 I kindly and in an absolutely acceptable way asked to get the source code yourself and debug the program in order to help us. #3 I received a very unfriendly letter from you expressing your general antipathy and what you thought of me. You got the appropriate reply. Apart from that, I have said everything before. (Version 1.5.44)

KARX11ERX To finish this, you have been no help at all. Instead, you have been complaining about the program in general, been touchy about advice given to you (emphasizing that at the age of 60 you don't need advice from me), and have generally addressed me derogatorily. My request to download the source code yourself and help us in fixing this issue (as you wrote you were a programmer), which was politely issued and a call to support us, has obviously been completely mistaken by you as an arrogant remark leaving you alone with the problem - which it wasn't at all. If at all, this says something about your perception of things around you. Stop making this place a forum of your negative feelings. (Version 1.5.44)

IBN You have to make sure that your d2 data is located either in /usr/local/share/d2x-xl or in a location you specified with the -hogdir command line parameter. (Version 1.5.40)
