THUS.SPAKE.Z Xee is an admirable little image viewing app....so is JustLooking; I use both, each have their own strong points. But then, I have to say, Preview is no slouch either; it does quite a respectable job of viewing both pics AND PDFs. Niether Xee or JustLooking can handle PDFs. For PDFs the oustanding 'Skim' is the way to go, it's far slicker than Adobe Reader I think. (Version 2.1)

VECTORPANDA just as i gave 5 stars to the dev's other app (the unarchiver), i'll give 5 stars to this one. blazing fast, tonnes of customisable keyboard shortcuts, and ACTUALLY PLAYS ANIMATED GIF89a, unlike preview. if the printing/PDF thing bothers you, just use mac finder to associate PDFs wtih preview.app, and everything else with xee. CHUCKK As a graphics viewer, Xee is just one among a large field. Where is really excels as a Comic Book reader/viewer. One of the best way to view .cbr and .cbz achieves that are used to digitize comic books. Minimal memory footprint, simple controls, fast, etc. And the price is right. Nice to have a view that does not require achieves to be open and close using another program. (Version 2.0)

&&&&&&&&&&&&& hmmm... it's an interesting wee app and has some useful features but i think the developer's claims that xee is a 'more powerful replacement for preview' are slightly wide of the mark, given that xee has no print menu and cannot open PDFs. both of which the 'underpowered' preview seems to manage OK. MODINGO I was very impressed when I first launched this app. I immediately noticed that it had some of the missing features not included in Apple's Preview app and also noticed a few GUI improvements over Preview. I couldn't understand why this wasn't every Mac user's "bread & butter" image viewer. I was wondering why I hadn't even heard about it until today. But then it after a few more seconds of tinkering...it all became so clear. As impressed as I was in the beginning, I was as equally unimpressed when I noticed the lack of PDF handling and conversion. I was then utterly horrified to see that there were no Page Setup, Print or Print Preview commands. Now that's got to be a first for any Mac app of this nature that I've used. OK, OK...maybe utterly horrified is a bit strong. (Version 2.0)

MAGENTIS I love Xee, it does exactly what it was designed to do and it does it well. I only have a few small issues. 1. There's no option to turn off sound effects. That delete Sfx becomes terribly annoying if you use it often. 2. It doen't remember window size. 3. It begins to slow down greatly with a lot (600+) of pictures in a single folder. (Version 2.0)

TJCAD At first I like it because its simple and fast. I mainly use it for viewing images. The only thing I dont like, well that I HATE about this is that it screws up my default app. It kept on changing the default app for my rar, cbr, etc... You can't even unclick some of them. Every time I change it this app kept on changing it back. It acts like a spyware. Would it be ok if you change this behavior on the next release. (Version 2.0)

HENRIKTEKNIK I've had some bad experience with Xee lately, rendering images corrupted/non-readable by any program. For instance, I opened up some pictures that I had taken with my Pentax Optio WP "cheapo" digital camera, and I performed a 90 degrees clockwise rotation on a picture and then hit Command-S to save. When I reopened the same picture in Xee, Preview and all kinds of other programs, I get error messages saying something about the picture having wrong header info, or missing such. Glad to see some resolvement to this issue, as I think Xee is a wonderful application otherwise. (Version 2.0)

LECTRICK I'm going to take a swag here and guess that your "cheapo" camera is not itself writing the jpeg file in an ideal fashion and this only makes itself evident when Xee tries to rotate it. I'd recommend a 2 step workaround- first do a Save As on the jpeg, and then reopen in Xee. (Version 2.0)
| Jun 7 2007 |
HENRIKTEKNIK Thanks for your reply, lectrick, but the image became only a few Kb "big", which make it impossible to open in for instance Preview.app... It's just as if its resources went depleted somehow. I loved everything about Xee and would very much like to start using it again. But seeing that this strip of image resources occured one time too many now, when I rotate pictures in Xee, I'm afraid I don't dare risking to loose one more picture... I hope this is due to something else, but so far, my pictures have stopped disappearing when using other image viewers. (Again, I still regard Xee as being the sweetest of them all. It's a pity for me, this.) (Version 2.0)

SCHOSCHIE It is still probably the fastest image viewer there is for the Mac. However, after trying it out for a couple of weeks, I found that it is, unfortunately, not a viable Preview replacement. The main downside is that Xee cannot print. Also, it does not handle PDFs well (or at all?). Thirdly, it seems to get confused by some color spaces (or maybe embedded profiles)... on numerous occasions, JPEG images were displayed in very weird false colors. Nonetheless, if you regularly need to sift through large loads of pics, Xee is probably the best choice. In that respect, Xee is likely the closest you can get to the ACDSee tool on the PC. LECTRICK 1) Printing- I have gotten around this by setting Preview.app as the "default editor"... which you get to with a simple Command-E. So printing is command-E, command-P. 2) PDF- I set Preview to open pdf's. Preview is now my PDF reader and all-around printer, Xee for everything else. (Version 2.0)

SCHOSCHIE Very good! Very, very fast indeed, very low cpu and mem usage. But there's a big downside... Xee can't print! I was going to almost trash Preview because Xee is so much better, but you can't live without it if you wanna print. Too bad! Maybe this will come up in a later version. HENRIKTEKNIK VERY nice image viewer. I like that it shows a chequered background for transparent areas! And even with *diagonal* squares (= even better than straight squares.) Some wishes for improvement: - Disable scroll-wheel operation while cropping images! (To prevent accidental "loss in focus" while cropping.) - Smaller toolbar icons for Rename, Delete, etc. - Cosmetic: Option for having Xee automatically put its window on the center of the screen. - After editing a picture with an external editor, and saving anew, having Xee still show that picture after you saved it. Right now, it seems to put the edited picture last in the viewing 'queue'. (I might have missed some feature that remedies this. If so, nevermind this.) Keep up the great work. This is definitely replacing Preview.app and any other 3rd party image viewers on my computer. (Version 2.0)

ANDREW SCOTT Very nice work. Fast and efficient. I really appreciate the auto-rotate option and the speed is very welcome, as is Uiversal Binary. What it does very well is rapidly allow viewing of images within a given folder. I often choose to view a subset of images in a folder and will probably keep using ViewIt for that purpose. PhotoReviewer suits me better for it's sorting options when I'm processing batches of recent photos but perhaps that's just because I'm used to it. Xee's "Move to destination n" feature makes it an excellent (and free) alternative. Great work and thanks. (Version 2.0)

LECTRICK This app needs to 1) open PDF documents via some built-in Cocoa framework 2) print... and then I can say goodbye to Preview.app ;) One thing I noticed it doesn't have is bicubic resampling during scaling operations. This makes it fast but also means it will lose every third line of data in a 66% reduction, for example, instead of blending it in. (Version 1.2.1)

WAHA.06X36 The lower-quality scaling is due to using OpenGL and not Cocoa to draw images. It's non-trivial to get higher-quality scaling, but I've got some ideas for that. We'll see. PDF reading is not easily implemented, as this is strictly a bitmap image viewer, and it would require rendering the PDF to a bitmap and then displaying that, which would waste memory and not work very well, especially not when zooming. Since it would be half-assed, I've decided to leave that up to programs that can do it better for now, unless I have some brilliant idea. Printing might get implemented later, depending on how much trickery it will take. (Version 1.2.1)

In Preview: when I zoom in/out the window doesn't resize to fit the images...it used to work in Classic. I sory missed that. Xee does that and MUCH more. - Easy to cusomize the keyboard shortcuts. - Click on one image in a folder, and you can EASILY view all the images in that folder using right-arrow and left-arrow keys. Very Excellent feature! Xee is now my default viewer for images. - Wish to have the thumbnails in future version. Thank you for this great software. (Version 1.2.1)

ARVIDTP sweet! FINALLY a free program the supports zooming and panning in full screen mode! And the scrolling through a directory of images with the mouse wheel is an excellent idea. Love the plethora of customizable key commands. (I switched zoom in to use "=" instead of "+" like other apps - less use of shift key). ARVIDTP however I just realized that "open in editor" does not always work on 10.3.9 (crashes photoshop on launch, does not open in preview), and "save as..." does nothing... Also iPhoto should be in the editor list - at least it is not on my mac (iPhoto 5.0.4). (Version 1.2)
| Feb 17 2006 |
WAHA.06X36 I've tried my best to work around features that are in 10.4 but aremissing in 10.3, but I don't have an actual 10.3 machine to test on, so there might still be some incompatiblities in there. If you to help out, you can open up /Applications/Utilities/Console.app and look for any error messages from Xee, and post them here or at http://wakaba.c3.cx/sup/kareha.pl/1122405906/ , and I'll try to see if it's something I can fix. iPhoto not showing up is probably because iPhoto doesn't register itself as an editor for image files. I could possibly make an option to include all programs that can open a file, and not just editors, though. (Version 1.2)

GUNTIS BUKALDERS Very good start! This is almost what I used to have as image preview in Windows :) However, it would be good to have several improvements: 1) Full-screen preview (black or user-defined background); 2) Command+- to zoom out, Command+= to zoom in, Command+0 to 100%, Command+Option+0 fit to screen. These are shortcuts used in professional (Adobe and many other) programs. It would be good to keep them... 3) Why complicate browsing by pressing Page Up nad Page down, when I could use just arrow buttons left or right? Command+left arrow goes 10 images back, while Command+right jumps 10 images forward. Home button jumps to he first image, End to the last image. 4) Add Xee to the contextual menus in the Finder. ("View with Xee" or just simply "Browse images"). 5) Add optional toolbar for previous/next image, Zoom in/out/Fit to screen/100%, Rotate left/right, Flip vertical/horizontal, Delete. What else? Probably that's all we'd need for the good'n'fast image browser... :-) Add these few extra features and it'll be THE BEST image viewer for the Mac!!! (Version 1.0)

This will not be changed. 4) You can already select "Open with... - Xee". Or set it as the default viewer. 5) I might add a toolbar in a later version, but I haven't yet because find a toolbar a waster of space in an image viewer. (Version 1.0)
