JIMW I guess I have tried 80% or more of all the maintenance utilities and system tweaking tools that have been released. This product, is one of the best I have seen. It has a great interface, small, yet easy to understand and see. It is easy to use and does not require a degree in computer science to use. For the hobbyist, it gives plenty of information and feedback on exactly what the functions are and what the results are. For the naive user it allows the person in auto mode to select a script and take care of their common maintenance tasks without being a Unix Geek. It also offers plenty of functionality for the advanced user and will serve well to handle a majority of their maintenance needs. I especially like the fact that the majority of tools and tweaks I use are in a single app. It seems very stable, especially for a first release. Up till now I have been using Tweak Freak and Onyx but after working with HelpMate, that may change. I feel that this product has the potential to toss an entire folder of maintenance routines, except for MainMenu, because of its convenience as a maintenance tool in my menu bar. If so, I will free up around 42MB in apps, that I keep around for these purposes. In fact if this proves to be as useful as I anticipate, I expect to downsize to the following products: HelpMate for my main maintenance and tweaking MainMenu for a quick tune-up AppleJack for a badly corrupt system Safari Enhancer for its unique Safari mods, including cache disabling which speeds up browsing on broadband. CLIX for advanced operations. I am adding HelpMate to my "must have" list of Apps. (Version 1.0) |
